And the funny thing is - it's probably the one film MOST deserving an Oscar for effects in history. They went so far ahead of what was thought possible with existing technology. The joke is in the hindsight: they thought it was cheating, while what it really was... was the future.
I wrote code back in the 70’s and 80’s. (0:44) it wasn’t “Tron” for electronic, Tron was a command code “Tron/Troff” stood for “Tron” Tracer-on, and “Troff” Tracer-off. Which back at that time (80’s when the movie was made), most code was written in some variant of basic for “high level” user code. When you ran a program it would stream the code on the screen as it ran, to show you what was going on when your system crashed due to whatever bugs was accidentally written in, so you could determine where the bad line of code was when it crashed. It was a debugging feature. In the movie Tron’s function was, to monitor what was going on and shut down any unauthorized activity (Allen’s program) which would and did take down the MCP which was hijacking the “System” which is why Tron was represented as a “warrior”, it’s sole purpose was tracking and taking down rogue code. (Edited for typos)
thought it would try and chip in with my experience writing BASIC on a Dragon 32 in the early 80s and using TRON and TROFF but you and @Michiel van den Broeke beat me to it! Kudos!
You didn't mention of how Tron was denied an Academy Award for best special effects (didn't even get a nomination) because the Academy felt that using computer effects was "cheating".
"TRON" is actually a key concept of the film - it's a debugging command that was used in many dialects of BASIC that is the mnemonic for "TRace ON". When TRON is flagged the terminal prints the current line number being executed onscreen (or on paper if printing). This is a bit of an easter egg to the computer geeks watching the movie as the TRON character is "debugging" the MCP. TRON also has a mirror command "TROFF" - which sets the TRON flag off when done debugging.
In fact, in early versions of the script, the main character was referred to as “the electron man” and “TRON” derived from that. I was going to describe the PDP-10 opcode coincidence, but a quick web search found this: www.tron-sector.com/forums/default.aspx?a=top&id=306929 I am pretty sure that the “Disney Studio Production Number” on the final shooting script was also 666.
I'd be interested in how one could replicate that old, rasterized look with modern software. I kinda feel like that's a task like building a F1-rocket-engine that brought us to the moon... today. Yeah, the tech is primitive by modern standards, but all the people who designed and built it are either retired or dead. The only thing that's possible is to make an updated and streamlined version of it. That makes me want to see it even more tho :D
Guys. Definitely recreate the Light Cycle scene. Also, think of the "computer" as you put it not as a solitary machine, but as a network. Then think about how the first Tron was mainly functional, with little entertainment, and how the new one showed an evolved world with higher specs (processing, memory, etc) and more recreational functions, similar to how computing has evolved IRL... It's pretty genius.
And another thing I liked about the original Tron was how the characters in the real life parts have counterparts from the grid, who are played by the same actors. They have similar duties, fight for the same causes but have a much bigger impact on events in the film as most of the movie takes place in the grid and revolves around software.
Tron Legacy is a movie that I’ll remember for my entire life. I loved the story, daft punk was amazing, and the vfx was incredible. The combination of these melded so well that too me Legacy was the perfect movie in many ways. I’ll never forget watching a light cycle slowly build up, the disc battles, the acrobatics Rinzlow did, and just the visuals.
I remember watching this movie for the first time with my dad and i will never forget that... To this day i don't think any movie came close to this one. Tron will always have a special place in my heart. :)
I think I saw it in the cinema first time around and I remember I was astounded by the amount of visual effects this movie had to offer. Everything looked just in place where it needs to be, the enviorment was very clean as you'd expect and the characters themselves were awesome. For me the highlight of the movie gotta be Zuse. The way he moves and talks, not even carrying that his creator came to visit and fight off the bad guys... Zuse simply enjoyed the show.
I'd love to see Corridor Crew do a Tron side-story short film using the original art style with some of them acting in it. Even just a couple minutes of that would be so much fun!
Random Trivia: The original Tron was disqualified for competing in the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects because the Academy at the time thought using computers was "cheating." Boy have times changed. Speaking of comparing VFX, what of a Godzilla VFX comparison from the original to the latest Japanese and American takes?
First time I saw Tron Legacy I didn't really remember all that much the first movie and I didn't understand that part first time around. Only later I realised Rinzler was in fact Tron himself from the first movie that lost his memory... Im thinking Rinzler remembered who we was the same way Alita remembered who she really were in Alita: Battle Angel. When they were in danger and needed to fight for their lives they started remembering who they were before. Really cool thing they did here with Tron.
One more thing about Tron Legacy: when it came out in IMAX 3D cinemas, the "real life" scenes were screened in 2D letterbox, then when you got into the "Tron world" the IMAX screen would be used fully and go 3D. It's one of the coolest uses of 3D I've seen, it was gorgeous viewed like that with the soundtrack exploding from huge speakers. Also, the first Jumanji compared the newest ones could be cool
First Man did the same thing when they landed on the moon, transitioning from the claustrophobic mayhem of inside the lander to the strange quiet expanse of the moon really felt like stepping onto another world!
@@LordJagd I love it when they do transitions like that while using IMAX, MI:4 did it when he walked up towards the edge of the open window, MI:6 when he ran out the plane, and again when he ran towards the helicopter near the end. First Man took me by major suprise, I forgot they filmed scenes in IMAX, so when that happened I immediately hit rewind. It's a very cool effect with the sound and camera being sucked out onto the Moon. 👌
I saw this in IMAX, and the 3D didn't kick in until they went into the computer. So you're looking at this flat image, then all of a sudden once he started to transform, you're almost literally being pulled in with him. So rad.
The first time a disc popped out of the screen, my mind was blown. Looking back on the movie outside of the theater, the slow mo shots seem kinda forced, but inside the theater it's so cool everytime.
Tron: Legacy was the first time I successfully saw 3D in a movie. Anaglyph(red/blue) doesn't work on me, and my mind just quickly cycles between the red and blue images, slowly enough to be noticeable which one it's focusing on, but fast enough to be headache inducing. My partner at the time extolled how good clear glasses 3D was and convinced me to see Tron: Legacy in 3D. ...I actually, legitimately cried, several times, throughout the film because of how beautiful this digital world I felt I was _in_ was. I leaned away in shock at the screen coming towards me, flinched when the disc flew at me, then tried to reach up and grab it. Attempted to touch multiple things and apparently spent the film with an expression of pure wonder. I remember nothing but the crying(because it impeded my vision), and had to be told about it later, by my partner who had spent as much of the time in the cinema watching the movie as watching my reactions to it because apparently... Guy who has little to no depth perception in real life, cannot see more primitive forms of 3D, and is now experiencing _proper depth_ for the first time in his memory is an enjoyable thing to watch.
I'd love to see you guys compare The Thing from 1982 and the prequel from 2011. perfect time for Halloweeeeeeen. I LOVE the idea of comparing old and new! this is a cool format haha
I love this idea BUT . . . the 'se-prequel' is almost entirely CG over the top of what was designed and planned to be physical effects. And the original has very few digital shots. The real story to me is about Carpenter's incredible rewrite of the original due to a huge scheduling break for their wintery locations, and the apparent Studio-meddling disaster of the se-prequel. (PS: The Thing 1982 might is one of my favorite movies of all time)
The sad thing is that when the movie came out it was not allowed to be nominated for special effects as it was considered all computer generated and so it was considered not real art, oh and the suits in the original Tron were touched up by hand by artists painting frame by frame. It was the aiming for the future with the past and present techniques redefining special effects. Great video guys!
@@bobrew461 but it was a good excuse for cool vfx. There was talk about a 3rd film coming out even a decade later. And I'd watch that too, even if the story is just as bad, just for the vfx.* *I just watched the remake and the story wasn't _that_ bad. It wasn't good, but I've certainly seen worse - much worse.
@@bobrew461 I think it's fairer to say that the first film's script/story was bad, whereas the second film's script/story wasn't as good as it should have been.
Another major reason why the second Grid is so different is that it was built ground-up from the inside. The first grid was an ordinary computer system programmed by humans, while the second was designed by the programs themselves.
Tron Legacy is one of my top ten favorite films purely for it's aesthetics. I've always found it to be one of the most beautiful films, visually, of all time.
Just watched it for the first time and don’t understand why this movie isn’t talked about more for what it accomplished visually. Reminded me a lot of bladerunner 2049 which I consider one of the best looking movies ever made
Have you ever played the game? Tron: Evolution? It's one of my favorites on the 360, but I can't seem to find any way to get it on pc as it was delisted from steam.
omg, i'd LOVE to see you guys remake tron scenes. Also, what instead of old movie vs remake, what about old movie with far future sequel? Mad Max series?
Man, you guys can’t even imagine, I graduated high school in 81, we had Defender and PAC-MAN and *wBasic. Tron literally melted our brains right in the theater. Thanks for the memories.
*SUGGESTION:* Remake the NEW Tron in the OLD style. Or remake a few scenes. but everything has to look like the old movie, not nessisarially completely old, but the retro aesthetic.
I really enjoyed your spelling of necessarily. Awkward word, like, is it one c or two? One s or two? I like your method. Just put all the letters in there and people will figure it out
I wish this every day, not just for Tron, but for classic Doctor Who, for Blake’s 7, for Star Wars, Star Trek… for the last one we have Star Trek Continues, that was fantastic, and proved it could work, but I want more. At least we have the Mandalorian, that’s more original Star Wars then anything else in the past 30 years, but I want the visual equivalent of lo-fi hip hop, old look, new stories, modern production.
Well, Tron 3 with Jared Leto is being made... Just wish it continued where Legacy left off, because god I love that movie with Sam's story. The aesthetic, Daft Punk's soundtrck, Olivia Wilde as Quora on that couch, literally art.
Thank you for the good news. I suppose it gives away how often I check movie news these days (that is to say, not often)... I thought it was still stuck in development hell. Disney was badly hurt by the pandemic (having to shut down Disney World for several months, among other things), and they need box office hits to get back on track. Tron 3 is almost a guaranteed success if they do it right, which is probably part of the reason they finally greenlit the project.
@@SpearM3064 don't get your hopes up too much, it's not been officially greenlit yet. Jared Letto just said that he's working on the project, that's all. No official word from Disney.
Sadly, we now live in the age of shitty story writing and shitty movie making, so they will screw this one up horribly I'm afraid. Movie makers just don't get trained properly anymore. They are employed on studios that just tell them one thing "it has to make as much as Avengers, make it produce 3 billion bucks!" They just pour a lot of money on it, but never talent, never skill and of course, never anything original, because that would be a risk. I'm sure they won't use the original cast, the won't care about the original story, but do something completely different ;-) *ARGHHH* They make movies today to make as much money as possible, not to make a piece of art, like it used to. That only focus on money destroys everything.
Unpopular opinion, Tron: Legacy was a good movie Edit: Since this comment somehow managed to get popular so quickly and since there are a lot of replies, let me clarify that I'm talking about how Legacy wasn't exactly a box office bomb, but had a sequel get cancelled because the writers and Disney suits see that other similar films (an example being Tommorowland and maybe, yes I know its a stretch but maybe the new Star Trek Movies that had a similar style) did poorly. Having invested like 200 million into Legacy, Disney didn't want to follow us Tommorowland with a similar move that would cost more and do worse I highly hope that they make a sequel that does the franchise justice, and one that is a visual masterpiece way ahead of its time like both other Tron movies were and are. Thank you for reading my rambling.
i fucking agree. i love tron legacy to bits. everything from the music to the weird de-aged jeff bridges. i love every single fucking bit of that movie.
@@JackKcod-g8r I did a while ago, and it's definitely a cult classic. While it's the kinda story I'd enjoy, I'm not too sure about what would be my family's opinion.
The thing I liked most about TRON LEGACY was the way how everything was neat and simple. And that dark neon like vibe like how you feel sitting alone at 3pm in your car listing to music while it's raining outside and you just want to sit back and forget everything and just enjoy that moment...that cold yet comforting hot feel. That was TRON LEGACY!
The "digitalization" part in Tron Legacy seems very unspectacular if you watch it here, but the gimmick was, that you had to watch it in 3D. Every scene in the real world was 2D and the effects were only applied in the digital world. They even had a info at the start of the movie to keep the glasses on all the time and that it's all intended. So, in this short switch from real to digital world, you suddenly had a really hard cut from a plane picture to the depth of a 3D movie and it worked pretty well!
I saw this with friends in the theater when it first came out. We were completely blown away. That first shot, when you descend down into the 3D world for the first time took my breath away. Nothing like it had ever existed before. This film is a legend.
The de aging process was great but not smooth. But as one person noted it looking kind of fake looks better since Clu is from the grid. It’s the intro that throws people off.
Watch some of the documentaries about it! Its really interesting how the filmmakers and CG techs got crash courses in how the other group functioned. Its kind of a miracle the original was made at all.
I wanna see you guys take on the TRON aesthetic. Doesn't even need to be a "challenge" video. (Not a time limit thing). I just wanna see what you guy would do with the aesthetic.
The recent tron movie is literally tron remastered when you think in gaming terms. Up the graphics while trying to keep the overall aesthetic. I'd say they did a great job. It's an awesome movie. And it has Daft Punk in it! Ahem... And Olivia Wilde.
"If you guys want to see us try to recreate some shots from the original TRON and like document the process. Let us know in the comment section" DEFINATELY YES
1:15 - that fly-thru of the tron logo in the first film is still so well done some 40 years later - theres something about it that feels so massive and full of depth and yet its just a few layers
One of my favourite soundtracks. It's even cooler when you notice that the orchestral music contrasts with electronic style music to represent the difference between the programs and the users.
i've heard some ppl saying Clu is kinda off, the CG is not 100% etc but I personally always thought that was kinda the point. Like, Clu is a program he's not meant to look exactly life like you know
Ngl, I love Tron legacy. I like the original tron a lot, but tron legacy has a special place in my heart, as I kid I found it so cool, the fighting, the story, the effects, the driving I just love it.
I feel like tron legacy was one of the best modern revivals I have ever seen. In 2023 this film still is just soooo good. The visuals and music's backgrounds are iconic.
"If you guys want to see us try to recreate some shots from the original TRON and like document the process. Let us know in the comments..." *PLEASE YES*
For Tron: Legacy the entire beginning of the movie is in 2d until Sam Flynn gets into The Grid then it switches to 3d. This is how I first saw it in theaters. That was a wow moment for me.
Fun fact: the original TRON didn’t get an academy award for special effects because the jury thought they were cheating with computers. Looks like those guys were always uncultured.
I honestly really like its style. Yes, the CGI may look quite dated, but it adds to the charm of "ultra advanced tech" in a decade that just wasn't ready for it. I especially like the many scenes when they mix the digital effects with the practical effects, it gives the world such a unique look...
Tron Legacy had a really cool soundtrack. That got me thinking: You guys have VFX artists, stunt(wo)men and animators react so far. How about a "score/audio artists (?) react"? I think it would be interesting to hear about what goes into making a good soundtrack, sound effects etc. Thumbs up if you agree!
0:50 TRON was not because of "elec-TRON-ic." TRON is actually a computer intruction: TRace ON. It was meant to reveal what was happening within the computer system as the program code was running. From TRON to the end of that function, the screen would show things like registers, variables, etc. To end that function, a programmer would issue TROFF. So, Tron could be meant to reveal anything in the system which was happening that shouldn't. After speaking with Flynn (because he triggered a system alert by trying to hack into "The System"), Alan engaged Tron to find out what was happening and to fight the big "MCP" (Master Control Program - the main villain of the movie). Also, Jeff Bridges' "program" in the beginning of the original Tron Movie was named, CLU. So, he was attempting to reveal "clues" as to who the actual programmer was for the games that Dilinger took credit for (and made all kinds of money)... even though it was Flynn who programmed them. Also, the Tron game cited was one of two which came out after the movie. The classic four-game arcade and Tron Disc. Plus the actors said that they never appreciated color more than when they left the studio after a day of shooting... since everything on the sets was black-and-white. They said the night lights and displays were overwhelming :-)
In the original TRON, when they escape the prison, everything seems glitchy, with bursts of light. According to the extra features on the DVD, this is because the photographic paper they used for the manual cutting and compositing, was supposed to be used in sequential packs (to compensate for slight variations in the batch as its manufactured) - but they'd just randomly grabbed packs out of storage without knowing that. Fortunately, that was the first scene they'd worked on, so it was noticed, and was in a position where they could explain the mistake as glitches.
Something that always is failed to mention is the fact that Legacy came out right when the 3D craze was happening. IMO Avatar and Legacy are the 2 movies that really took advantage of this tech. Most other movies just throw it in as an afterthought, but Legacy and Avatar both feel like the directors wanted 3D the entire time, and certain scenes *really* benefit from it. Considering also that both Trons really focused on pushing CGI to their limits at the time, makes this really impressive.
@@Hel1mutt I give CLU a pass since he's literally a computer generated clone of Jeff Bridges in the story and it kind of makes sense since they're inside a computer.
I remember getting literal chills watching it for the first time in theatre when that intro piece started, and I still do every time I watch it. Daft Punk is incredible!
I get chills every time I hear End of Line start up on my play list. Fortunately, if we ever get a third movie, Daft Punk have said they'd be very interested in doing the OST.
For those who didn't see Tron: Legacy in 3D, the scenes in the real world were 2D and scenes of The Grid were in 3D. The digitising shot was actually the first transition to 3D. It was a neat falling into the world feeling, I still remember it to this day.
Same. I watched it 3 times before it went out to the public.. holy crap, just seeing through the food of the Recognizer was amazing! That movie is the only movie that was made for 3D!!
Funny about 1982: Both TRON and Blade Runner were released then. TRON was the first movie to us CGI and Blade Runner was all done 'Thru the Lens' effects. I find it amazing how both these fantastic films have huge followings after having both sucked in the Box Office sense of films. Yeah, VHS/DVD had made a massive impact for this. Granted, Blade Runner had 5 different variants available. Love BOTH these movies for totally different reasons, yet loved their respective visuals. Thanks for posting this video. Take care, Mark.
And slightly different premises but still SCI-Fi. They not illustrate Sci-fi, but one is robots and AI, the other is what we now call the Metaverse I would say.
Tested did a good show of the original King Kong figures from harryhausen or whats his name was. But stop motion is really a thing of the past. Still interesting.
TRON wasn't "e-lec-TRON-ic". TRON was an acronym for 'TRace ON', which was the point of the TRON program: to trace security breaches in the MCP. The TRON command itself (along with TROFF, itself counterpart to disable the mode) was a debugging tool available in some early implementations of BASIC.
these dudes dont rreally put any effort into studying what these movies are about. They think the creators are more or less the same intelligence as what they can come up with off the cuff.. They dont realize the people that created the Tron imagery were creative and technological geniuses. basically took existing technology and programmed/rendered (there were no 3d programs to do anything!) what they needed to make their movie.
@@xpez9694 I googled it. "TRON is also a debugging command in the BASIC programming language, meaning "TRace ON". However, Steven Lisberger has stated in interviews that he took the name from the word "electronic", and did not know about the BASIC command until later." He seemed to really like the idea of an Electronic Warrior (Spartacus inspired) and Electronic World in his interviews. So I think Niko is right
What counted as VFX back then? Did the Academy only point to things like practical effects, matte paintings, compositing, and miniatures for the Visual effects Oscar?
@@duncanwade1026 pretty much yeah. Back then, they only gave out awards to practical effects because it was more impressive to do back in those days, even when computers were starting to learn how to do effects. That's why if you go search up past academy winners for vfx, a good chunk was done practically. It wasn't until Toy Story came out where they finally decided computer effects was considered Oscar worthy.. I'd highly recommend Burger Fiction's video to see where I'm coming from.
@@vladimiradidas1945 Toy Story (1995) wasn't nominated likely b/c it was classified as animation (though The Nightmare Before Christmas somehow was). Award winners during the 90s were Total Recall, Terminator 2, Death Becomes Her, Jurassic Park, Forrest Gump, Babe, Independence Day, Titanic, What Dreams May Come, & The Matrix. It's more that CGI in movies increased rather than the Academy not considering them.
Yeah, I want to see the bones of the original Tron, but maybe simple ways you could improve it with today's technology, even without spending a bunch of time.
The key to the Original Tron was that they made it seem like it had a lot more computer graphics in it than there really were. Most of the film is a hybrid of live action and traditional 2d hand drawn animation (with an emphasis on the backlit animation technique)
I'm gonna disagree with Sam and Niko on this one, I think the look of Tron Legacy is just about perfect. I totally understand what you're saying about the raw, hand-crafted feel and the very hardware-oriented art direction, but Tron had to change its aesthetic because the aesthetics of computers themselves have changed. When you buy top of the line hardware now you don't get a gray block, an exposed circuit board, or anything resembling the original Tron aesthetic. What do you get? Sleek, black, LED, etc. Not to mention that the focus of computers has radically shifted from being about impressive hardware making things possible, to innovative software making things possible. All that said, I think Tron Legacy really captures the evolution of what computers are in the public consciousness compared to its 1982 predecessor.
Well put. I love Tron (1st gen Tron fan) but Tron Legacy distilled that look. I wish there were more 1:1 examples of the two worlds other than the vintage cycle and the recognizer.
I love the O.G. movie amd liked the new one, that being said, i never actually thought of it that way. That actually makes sense and kind of improves it for me just a little more. I'm gonna watch it again with this in mind
I've got three suggestions for legacy vs current VFX: Star Trek, specifically Original series, Next Gen, and then all the way to Picard. That should be a fairly comprehensive breakdown of the evolution of the art on it's own. Heck, Next Gen's art evolution alone is probably a whole episode. The second is Doctor Who. A series renowned in it's original run for fairly crap "you can see the strings" effects, compared to pretty much anything from the revived series, both in terms of physical props and CG. Just please cover more than Daleks. And finally, Power Rangers. So much to unpack there, but please crossover to stuntpeople react for that one, because the fightwork really needs some coverage there, especially with the crazier costumes.
@@Shlonzs Yeah, when the movie first came out, the debugging command was the first thing that came to mind. The movie was full of references non-geeks (at the time) wouldn't get, like Bit and it's only ability to answer Yes or No, I/O ports that let them talk to users... So debugging the MCU made as much sense as elecTRONic did. This movie gave me a whole new perspective on what goes on inside of a computer. Dozens of programs that looked like me running around inside the CPU doing different tasks, lol...
Showing my age here but the command TRON was an early debugging term, short for TRace ON. Cool video though guys, really love these films, and enjoyed your explanations of the practical effects.
While true, it is a common misconception that the name TRON is based on that. It's been stated publicly that the creators of the movie were unaware of the TRON command until audiences pointed it out. But I usually tell the story of that misconception as well. Love Tron. Really hope they make another. Don't stop believing.
@@CubeDaWoop Yes, and even more coincidental is that the TRON command was used for recording debugging information about other programs, i.e monitor their behaviour, and that is literally also what Tron was designed for in the movie, to monitor the MCP, Master Control Program. Probably the reason why it's such a common misconception and an even better story about misconceptions... Oh, I wanna watch them both now again....

Correct, was wondering what the presenter was on about, regarding elect-tron-ic. I remember using TRON on my ancient Atari computer.
In fact, in early versions of the script, the main character was referred to as “the electron man” and “TRON” derived from that.
I was going to describe the PDP-10 opcode coincidence, but a quick web search found this: www.tron-sector.com/forums/default.aspx?a=top&id=306929
I am pretty sure that the “Disney Studio Production Number” on the final shooting script was also 666.
@@octoberphoenix It's because it's pure coincidence. The director contradicts this myth in his commentary.
Haha I am not a computer geek at all, I almost fell asleep reading Brian's explanation.
The old Radio Shack TRS-80 basic language had TRON and TROFF that turned the tracer on and off

I'd be interested in how one could replicate that old, rasterized look with modern software.

Yes, do it!
And another thing I liked about the original Tron was how the characters in the real life parts have counterparts from the grid, who are played by the same actors. They have similar duties, fight for the same causes but have a much bigger impact on events in the film as most of the movie takes place in the grid and revolves around software.
That's exactly how I saw the updated style in my head. Computers have revolved, so should how they feel when sucked inside of them!
I only ever encountered bugs that were already present in the original release. Stuff like ragdolls going haywire and ships rising out of the ocean.

That moment when Tron said "I fight for the users" is the best line in the entire film.
@@royliber3824 Yup, he redeemed himself.
Three lines in the entire second movie. Growls at people a lot. Best character in the franchise, change my mind
@@SWR_Quackula Four lines, he says “User” when Sam bleeds during the disk games.
It's Tronin time
One more thing about Tron Legacy: when it came out in IMAX 3D cinemas, the "real life" scenes were screened in 2D letterbox, then when you got into the "Tron world" the IMAX screen would be used fully and go 3D. It's one of the coolest uses of 3D I've seen, it was gorgeous viewed like that with the soundtrack exploding from huge speakers.
Also, the first Jumanji compared the newest ones could be cool
When I went and saw it in IMAX 3D, it actually had a message come up before the movie that mentioned that very thing!
new or old those guy can not do either one.. too lazy...
That's cool. Reminds me of how they filmed Wizard of Oz.
I saw this in IMAX, and the 3D didn't kick in until they went into the computer. So you're looking at this flat image, then all of a sudden once he started to transform, you're almost literally being pulled in with him. So rad.
Yup, they think it's boring because without 3D they're missing the best shot in the movie!
THIS WAS INSANE.I was forever changed.
(PS: The Thing 1982 might is one of my favorite movies of all time)
Yes but that’s why they should compare. The practical beats the crap out of the sequel CGI.
What about taking it a step further and light Clint on fire once again to talk about the original from the 50's as well?
That’s exactly what I was thinking!
Woah The Living Tombstone!!!! ❣

The first grid was an ordinary computer system programmed by humans, while the second was designed by the programs themselves.

Unpopular opinion, Tron: Legacy was a good movie
Edit: Since this comment somehow managed to get popular so quickly and since there are a lot of replies, let me clarify that I'm talking about how Legacy wasn't exactly a box office bomb, but had a sequel get cancelled because the writers and Disney suits see that other similar films (an example being Tommorowland and maybe, yes I know its a stretch but maybe the new Star Trek Movies that had a similar style) did poorly. Having invested like 200 million into Legacy, Disney didn't want to follow us Tommorowland with a similar move that would cost more and do worse
I highly hope that they make a sequel that does the franchise justice, and one that is a visual masterpiece way ahead of its time like both other Tron movies were and are. Thank you for reading my rambling.

Score is essentially Subjective opinion. CGI and Stunts can be Objectively criticised.
That actually is really, really cool!
Now THIS was a well of information! Thank you so much, I really didn't know much of it. :)

Wow! Thanks for this 😊
I actually think the Making of Tron is more interesting today than the actual movie. I can't recommend it enough for people.
How you know this?
@@SentinalSlice Because I have the DVD with said special feature?
Something that always is failed to mention is the fact that Legacy came out right when the 3D craze was happening. IMO Avatar and Legacy are the 2 movies that really took advantage of this tech. Most other movies just throw it in as an afterthought, but Legacy and Avatar both feel like the directors wanted 3D the entire time, and certain scenes *really* benefit from it. Considering also that both Trons really focused on pushing CGI to their limits at the time, makes this really impressive.
I really like TRON: Legacy. I'll defend that any day. Which is awkward since I usually leave all Disney movies as undefendable.
I did too actually. I mean, the story isnt great, but I genuinely like the world building so much i give the rest a pass
loved the movie, even if Clue looks uncanny valley lol
@@Hel1mutt I give CLU a pass since he's literally a computer generated clone of Jeff Bridges in the story and it kind of makes sense since they're inside a computer.
Same here. Seeing it in IMAX was a freaking great immersive experience.
Yeah the story is poor but the athmosphere and the actual experience of watching the movie on a big screen was really enjoyable. Also that soundtrack
Tron: Legacy will always be a god tier movie simply because of Daft Punk’s soundtrack being one of the greatest scores ever made.
I remember getting literal chills watching it for the first time in theatre when that intro piece started, and I still do every time I watch it. Daft Punk is incredible!
Ya damn right it is!
The music definitely sets the tone of the movie, it wouldn't be the same without Daft Punk.
I made the end credits music as my ringtone.
That's a cool idea, i wish i saw it in 3d now.
Same. I watched it 3 times before it went out to the public.. holy crap, just seeing through the food of the Recognizer was amazing! That movie is the only movie that was made for 3D!!
dethmaul I went into it thinking I must have messed up and bought a ticket to the regular 2D version. That scene hit and 🤯
Funny about 1982: Both TRON and Blade Runner were released then.
Syd Mead designed most of the look and feel for both.
And slightly different premises but still SCI-Fi. They not illustrate Sci-fi, but one is robots and AI, the other is what we now call the Metaverse I would say.
I was obsessed with Tron: Legacy for one full year after it came out. Still a big fan of the film till today.
Same bro, literally have the soundtrack still as my ringtone
Comparison suggestion: King Kong. From the original, to Toho, to 80s, to 00s, to Skull Island
Hell, the evolution of Godzilla from 54 through the decades would be awesome as well
Hell yeah
oh yes, all the king kong movies, it perfectly show the cgi evolution over the years.
When I was little I cried when King Kong dies. The one with jack black.
Tested did a good show of the original King Kong figures from harryhausen or whats his name was. But stop motion is really a thing of the past. Still interesting.
Recreating shots from the original Tron is a necessity.
TRON was so inspiring when it came out in 1982 to me as a kid. It just blew my mind and it still does. It is so obviously ahead of its time.
TRON: Legacy is probably one of my favorite movies; the score, the effects, the themes are so good
My best Cinema experience:D
Daft Punk needs to get back in the studio and make a new soundtrack. They killed it.
@@kalmanta1824 yes!
good god that soundtrack. Unbelievable good. I listen to the album on a regular basis. End of line, wow.
Mine's tied between tron legacy and pacific rim
"I could probably recreate that light-cycle scene in a day"
BET!
"TRON" is a command back in the BASIC programming language used to debug code. TRON = TRace ON.
There you go, making me all nostalgic...
Yep! Was about to reply with the same thing.
@Ba Doai This is true. There was also the toggle: TROFF = Trace OFF.
While that's true, it has nothing to do with the name of this movie, which, as Niko correctly stated, is an abbreviation of "elecTRONic".
And its close friend TROFF
TRON wasn't "e-lec-TRON-ic".
TRON was an acronym for 'TRace ON', which was the point of the TRON program: to trace security breaches in the MCP. The TRON command itself (along with TROFF, itself counterpart to disable the mode) was a debugging tool available in some early implementations of BASIC.
Yep this is where I knew it from - build in debug mode called TRON/TROFF TRace On/TRace OFF
*Trace on* you say...

@@nazrael8826 lmao
these dudes dont rreally put any effort into studying what these movies are about.
However, Steven Lisberger has stated in interviews that he took the name from the word "electronic", and did not know about the BASIC command until later."
He seemed to really like the idea of an Electronic Warrior (Spartacus inspired) and Electronic World in his interviews. So I think Niko is right
It's fun how Tron wasn't nominated to Oscars because they thought using CGI was cheating.
The WHAT??!!
oh how far we've come since then...
Mad max series
Blade runner series
(soon) Dune
Star Wars series
Westworld (movie vs show)
Alien series
dune!!!!!
How can you leave James Bond out of this list 😲
@@JeffreyArts totally! Sorry... Don't kill me.
A Dune comparison would be awesome, as would everything in your list.
I've been saying this for years. Pick a movie or a genre, then pick good AND bad effects.
Challenge: Recreate Tron 1 but with even better cgi.
Yeah, I want to see the bones of the original Tron, but maybe simple ways you could improve it with today's technology, even without spending a bunch of time.
Do it Corridor, you won’t

Better challenge - recreate scenes from Legacy with the classic Tron1 effects look
Yeah
The key to the Original Tron was that they made it seem like it had a lot more computer graphics in it than there really were. Most of the film is a hybrid of live action and traditional 2d hand drawn animation (with an emphasis on the backlit animation technique)
All I learned in this video: thank God computer exist. I can’t imagine doing that stuff by hand now.
Hahha
Yeah, God stood in the Garden of Eden and said: Let there be computers.
I mean Kevin Flynn said it himself in the movie
He perfected the grid
I agree but technically Sam Flyn was placed in the 1980's computer so the look would still be the same as the first tron movie. glad they didnt tho.
I agree with you
I've got three suggestions for legacy vs current VFX:
Star Trek, specifically Original series, Next Gen, and then all the way to Picard.
YES!!!! The original mmpr movie vs the remake
Krispy Kreme's Power Rangers got a bad rap, but it got a lot of things right visually.
I've been asking for Dr who for so long legs make it happen
for an even bigger star trek comparison you could throw in the jj abrams movies, perhaps wrath of khan vs into darkness
Make it so!
It's funny how the old one stood up there in the same level that the new one. Both are marvelous
Of course i want to see the Corridor Tron, CORRITRON
Give it away guys
On some systems, TRON was a command for "Trace On", a debugging environment on early (8-bit) PC's. (TROFF would turn the debugging environment off.)
Thanks Junkie, I was going to make the same comment. You'd use TRON when your code was going place you didn't predict it would go.
Thanks that’s giving an interesting insight on the inspirations that lead to this movie
Troff sounds like the porn spin off lol
@@BetweenTheLyons Two girls and a tro.... Nevermind...
Wouldnt mind seeing a comparison of any of the Planet of The Apes films.
Great idea, especially with the Tim Burton one. It seems like it was a big deal at the time.
True
Honestly Tron Legacy has now become an underrated modern classic
I just watched this for the first time under the assumption that it sucked. I can confidently say this movie the definition underrated
Whatever it's rated, it's rated too high.

@@supergv2235 No one told you to have terrible taste and malfunctioning eyes, but here you are.
Showing my age here but the command TRON was an early debugging term, short for TRace ON. Cool video though guys, really love these films, and enjoyed your explanations of the practical effects.
TROFF. the movie. when?
While true, it is a common misconception that the name TRON is based on that. It's been stated publicly that the creators of the movie were unaware of the TRON command until audiences pointed it out.
But I usually tell the story of that misconception as well. Love Tron. Really hope they make another. Don't stop believing.
@@philipmiesbauer Huh, what a coincidence with the motorcycle traces :D
@@CubeDaWoop Yes, and even more coincidental is that the TRON command was used for recording debugging information about other programs, i.e monitor their behaviour, and that is literally also what Tron was designed for in the movie, to monitor the MCP, Master Control Program. Probably the reason why it's such a common misconception and an even better story about misconceptions...
Oh, I wanna watch them both now again....
Blade Runner vs. Blade Runner 2049 pls!
EDIT: Would also love to see your guys' rendition of a light cycle fight.

I love the new Tron. Such an underrated movie. The visuals were gorgeous, the OST was a masterpiece.
