i dont mean to be so off topic but does anybody know a method to get back into an instagram account?? I somehow forgot my login password. I would love any tips you can give me!
I just brew a shot, attempt to steam the milk add them together and hope it tastes good lol Not sure what kinda drink I'm making but it fits in a cappuccino sized cup.
Super helpful info! I realized my flat whites weren’t flat whites at all when served in 10oz cups. When I first started taking making espresso at home more seriously, I was drinking 16oz lattes. I quickly learned that the milk was simply drowning out any true flavor we could be getting from the espresso and have moved down to 12oz cups or lower. The difference in flavor is incredible, and we can get so much more out of our drinks now because of that cup adjustment. Also good to know about cappuccino cup sizes - didn’t realize it should be that much smaller, either. Thank you!
I used to make the mistake when I just starting out too. For some reason I was practicing latte art in a HUGE americano cup later switched to the right sizes.
I always used to ask how many shots they put in the cup for certain sizes. When they told me they put 2 shots in all sizes - I thought to myself, 'oh, so you don't know what you're actually making then when I ordered a cappuccino.'
Thank you for your video. What I dont understand is, why is there absolute no difference in espresso volume between those three drinks of yours. Anywhere you look, cappuccino is served with a single, latte with single or double and flat white always a double shot. So, why didn't you make any difference? What is correct? Thanks you!
🤣 I adapted them to a double shot since I never use the single shot basket. The only one that is actually incorrect is the cappuccino. At the time I didn't know that there is actually a certified Italian cappuccino which is a 20-25ml single shot with 110ml of steamed milk airated so it fills a 150-160ml mug. But the rest are all within bounds. A latte also has no real definition, just coffee with a LOT of milk 🤣
Thanks for this video. I would of prefered a weight base mesurement instead of volume. Its more precise. But it opened my eye that I was doing my latte all wrong. It will help me getting the ratio correctly. Thx again
With liquid ratios in a glass you actually want to use volume. This is because the various milks and brewed espressos have mildly different densities. The volume ratios will be consistent. The weight ratios will not. With solids such as coffee beans to grind it’s better to measure by weight that way you can eliminate the differences between how people measure say, a tablespoon.
Oh my! This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you. Now how to convince my wife that I need more cupboard space for even more coffee paraphernalia. Cheers!
Could you tell me how you think the loveramics and notNeutral cups compare against each other? Thank you! In terms of the aesthetic, I think the loveramics looks better (esp the handles and colour options) but I'm not sure about functionality, heat retention etc.
The Loveramics is a little thicker, and the NotNeutral is quite striking to look at (friends appreciate the quality) but they are both lovely to use. I haven't done a scientific test of their heat retention, but could be worth doing!
Great video and information 👍. I'm trying to choose a machine and noticed what appears to be a Rancillio Silvia with a PID in the video! I have not been able to decide between Gaggia Lelit Rancillio Bezzerra etc under $1500 for two months! If someone with your experience has a Silvia with PID then it's got to be good for a newbie like me!
I like the machine - if you can get the newer one with the actuating wand it's great, and it shouldn't be too expensive to get the PID. For $1500 make sure you spend most of that on a quality grinder. The Silvia is a great machine and I really like mine - great for entry level, but any coffee nut will tell you the grinder is by far the most important part.
Hi Charlie, I know this is a fairly old video, but it's just helped me a lot on my home barista hobby. Now I know what coffee cups I should go for and also what coffee drinks I should have as personal preferences. However, as a good cocoa addicted person, I was wondering where does mocha fit on your list? Is there a special size or can it go as mocha caps, mocha lattes and so on, just respecting their no-choc-boosted counterparts? Thanks a lot
So glad it helped you. For a Mocha you can just add chocolate to a latte or flat white depending on your preference. There's no official mocha recipe. This video is just supposed to show that many drinks taste much better when made in certain proportions 😉
Yeah there are some drinks that have an actual standard like cappuccino (there's literally a government definition in Italy). In the West a latte is usually just an espresso with ANY amount of milk. But using the right cups makes it so easy to get a perfect tasting drink with the right amount of milk!
You can't make coffee 'wrong' 🙄 it really is ridiculous. Sure, some people got together and said "we think this is the best way to drink or prepare coffee" but what does that matter? I completely enjoy coffee the way i prepare it, but it's 'wrong'. Should i make it taste a certain way so I can brag about how much I care about coffee, or just make a drink I like? Don't get me wrong, i get people being interested in the different flavors. But most people just don't care and theyre not 'ruining' their at home coffee because it's not exactly a certain temperature or because milk was added
NuggetDoll what I meant by this is a lot of people who make coffee for a living make it wrong. What I mean by ‘wrong’ is they call it a latte, cappuccino, flat white etc, however all three drinks are practically the same. Even when you know a little bit, it’s very easy to observe that most of them have no clue how to use the equipment properly. Their drinks aren’t being made that way because that’s their opinion of what a good coffee tastes like, it’s purely that’s what you get for your money, because that’s the result they got the first time they turned on the machine and they’ve never improved on their technique as they haven’t struggled to make money selling coffee.
At 200ml, isn't the Loveramics egg a bit small for latte? I'd say that the bigger notNeutral lino would be better, but I'm still not sold on its design.
Good question. It depends what you like and there's nothing wrong with having a slightly stronger flat white. Really a big part of the point of this video was to define drinks better and not just use the biggest coffee cup. Lots of people have these giant soup bowls for coffee and they wonder why their coffee tastes boring. It's cos there's too much milk 🤣
@@homecafecharlie great, thank you. Another thing, do you know why when I try and do latte art I either get a blob of froth with no definition or when I think I’ve got the milk correct it ends up just dispersing into one big blog of “latte art” thanks
An iced latte is not a specific drink, and can be made with anything from an 8oz (240ml) cup to a 20oz (600ml) cup (a la Starbucks). I would advise never going bigger than 12oz (350ml) or the coffee taste will be too mild.
It's just a cheapo one off Amazon! It was really good for the price, especially since it doesn't take a big boom pole like my more expensive setup does now.
Finding your videos really helpful! Quick question regarding the Flat White... you state 40 - 50ml of espresso. Is this in volume including the crème as seen on a shot measuring glass? I weigh my shots to get 36g liquid from 18g ground coffee (so that's only 36ml of espresso)
Yes it's better to weigh it for accuracy. A traditional single shot is supposed to be 25ml (10g basket) and on the 18g basket it's 40ml once the crema has dissipated somewhat, but go by weight for sure.
@@homecafecharlie Cheers! I'm using the 150ml cup that you use and I have a 12oz milk jug. Along with my 36g shot how much full fat milk would you put in the 12oz jug?
Is the loveramics egg cup you use for your latte art only 200ml? Because for a latte it says 200-250 mls of milk and I'm unsure which size cup I should be using, currently using a 12oz starbucks mug for my art :) thanks
Anywhere from 8oz to 12oz is good depending on the size of the art. I use an 8oz mostly (300ml) but for competitions they often use a bigger cup to do more expansive art
Your video was very helpful! Interestingly, I have the same Café do Brasil coffee bag on display in my house! And I do coffee videos on You Tube as well!
I got kind of confused. I would make a cappuccino with a single shot of espresso (around 30 ml) and foamed milk in a 150 ml cup and a flat white with a double espresso and foamed milk in a 180 ml cup...
When I arrived in Tokyo in 2007, great espresso was vanishingly rare. Things have changed since then. Even so, if I order an espresso or macchiato or piccolo or some other short espresso drink now, I'll usually get the same response from the person on the register, who'll hold up a cup and ask: "Are you SURE you want something this small?"
Do you know how many ounces your Vardagen cups are? I only saw 5 oz that look like that at ikea. Maybe they are sold out of the bigger size? There is a 10 oz, but the shape looks different.
Is the flat white then done with a double shot of espresso into a 5oz cup and the rest is steamed milk and foam and the cappuccino is a single shot into a 5oz cup and milk and foam?
I have been using a double shot for all of them, but the main difference between a flat white and cappuccino is the milk type - more foam for a cappuccino.
Home Cafe by Charlie hmm isn’t a double shot on a 5oz cup kind of heavy? I might have to try it. Then the key difference is just with the milk texture. It’s pretty much the same drink size wise.
@@daftsapien Right, and I think I also have a small double shot size here at 40ml. The Italian standard is a 25ml espresso with 100ml steamed milk (an Italian friend told me when she saw this video) so I might need to do some corrections in a future video :S
@@homecafecharlie Thanks! I'll check it out. Also, thanks for posting the video - I used to get confused with my ratios of milk to coffee, and this video helps solidify my memory. Looks great with the animations too!

Either adjust your total volume while maintain ratios or don't fill a cup right to the top perhaps would be alternative solutions. Glad you seem to get so much pleasure out of it anyway. Interesting.
He never explained how having all these cups is actually necessary. None of these cups are going to help you get the ratio right, at most they'll help you get the right volume for the foam/milk, but definitely not the ratio.
The framing of this video seems a little odd. It seems like the main issue here is that the ratios are out of wack in a lot of places, but trying to attach that to cups seems an odd move
Thanks for the comment. I think because people always want to fill the cup to full, they end up either putting too much milk (cup is too big for the type of drink) or too little milk. Having the right cups makes the ratios easier to get ;)
Thanks, the best description of milk based espresso I have seen. Using the right cup makes it so much more obvious what each recipe should be.
Thank you so much and I'm really glad you found it useful!

😂😂😂
