Recently switched to Bodum double walled glass cups and as silly as this may sound it‘s probably the single most important upgrade I made. They’re nice to look at, well made and sure coffee (especially milk drinks) may look even more interesting but for me it’s all about the superior heat retention when drinking smaller shots. I like to give my machine a quick clean before retiring to my room, just putting things back where they belong etc. With regular cups my coffee always ended up being on the slightly cold side of good and no amount of pre-warming got rid of this. Enjoying your content btw!
it's all a marketing skim honestly that makes the ACME and NotNeutral Vero. They have brand reputation that can be sold at highly marked up costs that the cheap end ones can't. Also they are usually marketed and sold to high end cafes, so they get most of their business from them.
Cups are not just cups. The shape and size has a lot to do with how the espresso will act and how milk pours etc. For espresso it's also very important that the cup retains heat well. Tall and narrow cup highlights body while shorter and wider cup highlights aroma and the espresso is also quicker to cool down to drinking temp. But most important to me is that the cup is beautiful. Nothing beats enjoying your coffee slowly from a beautiful cup. That's why I choose Edizione espresso/cappuccino cups by Ancap. I also really like the VIP cups by Seltmann Weiden(sadly not produced anymore since 2020).
Your cheap cups look pretty nice actually, I started with some cheaper thin porcelain cups (a bit larger than typical cappuccino cups) but eventually wanted something like what they have at Cafes with thick heavy porcelain cappuccino cups. I got some ACF brand Italian brand ones, which I had to get a pack of 6 at a time with coasters, which was about $65 I think, which seemed expensive to me at the time, and didn't really 'need' 6 but it is nice to have extras. One I lent to my brother and he probably uses it occasionally. With the thicker 'proper cappuccino' cups it just feels more authentic, heat retention is also a factor and I think the heavy porcelain ones should have better heat retention than thinner / lighter weight ones. I managed to drop them a few times and they survived, like falling into a stainless steel sink or hitting other dishes etc. Although one did break falling from standing height hitting my tile floor, so they're not indestructible but do seem relatively tough (glad I had some extras!) . One big thing for coffee cups is that the porcelain is properly sealed so it's not porous and as a result it's easy to clean and the white interior doesn't get stained over time, and it's easy to clean.
Thanks for the comment Ben! I think I lucked out when starting out as the cheap cups are good enough for many. For whatever reason my latte art seems to be better in the ACME latte cup. I think the inside surfaces of the ACME cups feel a little easier to pour in. Or it could be the shape of the cup itself lending to that. I think the NotNeutral Lino and ACME Evo feel amazing in the hand and really give you that authentic cafe experience. I haven't got the Lino yet as I wanted the Vero but either that or the Fellow Monty are next.
@@BrianQuan I started with my regular mugs, I upgraded later to acme evo. There's no reason why you can't buy one or two at a time. Good cups should last a long time.
@@SmallSpoonBrigade I'm a huge fan of the ACME EVO now! The colors and coating make my day. I might pick up the Tulip or Mighty for fun down the line but so far very happy with the 3 I have.
try the East Fork mug - they feel great in hand, look great and enhance the coffee/tea drinking experience. But they come with a price that is hard to justify, for a casual coffee drinker. This is something you either get or not, in terms of justifying the price. At that, however, they make great gifts, because they free the recipient from justifying the cost. I hope you make the plunge on buying one and would love to see your reaction to using it.
Why not choose double wall glass coffee mug which is made from borosilicate glass , it is much lighter than ceramic mug and it is heat insulated .The most important reason is that it is BPA & Lead Free .
With the Decent Espresso, Niche Zero and all the cups it looks like you are right into this hobby! In the deep end. Good for you. I enjoy it as well. May as well do it right!
Hi Stephen, it is one of the most enjoyable hobbies I have taken up! The espresso rabbit hole has been a wonderful journey so far and the community has been extremely supportive. Thanks for the comment!
Those black marks on the cheap cups are probably “crazing” it is cracks within the glaze it is safe and likely won’t end up doing anything bad for a long time but it looks bad(side note in glaze with lead crazing is unsafe)
My favorite cup and saucer is from a defunct Korean brand. This is the Epoch Norway set I found at a thrift shop. It was only $8 for a sweet of four, but I ended up ordering a second set for my parents from a replacements website for $50. I really like how the inside is hemispherical, so it doesn't disturb the coffee when I tilt it to take a sip, and the foam doesn't run away from my lips. The cups are just a really good size and shape for lattes, in my opinion. Like you, I had seen cups with this shape at a coffee shop I like and really wanted my own. For a while, I was frustrated in failing to find what I was looking for, so seeing these randomly on a thrift shop shelf was super exciting. Visually, the saucers have a double rib on the edge, which reminds me of a droplet of water falling on calm water.
Thanks for the comment and story about the cups. It's just super interesting to me that cups can be a relatively sentimental and deep topic. I am really hoping things return to normal so I can enjoy a good latte in a cafe. To-go cups have really changed the cafe experience for me.
I have a hard time enjoying a latte in a to go cup as much as I do in a proper cup. The height relative to the width of the cup makes it more difficult to get that perfect sip of foam and fluid throughout the coffee experience. There is also that slight paper taste. Oddly, I like the paper taste of togo cups with hot cocoa. Probably because it reminds me of childhood stops for cocoa on the way home from playing in the snow.
EXCELLENT! Question? do you use a Tea/Coffee Cup Pad Placemats, with your cup (expresso, cappuccino, latte), just to give a greater look, good design feeling for a good enjoyment with your cup?
In my opinion there are 2 differences: porcelain quality and esthetics. The porcelain quality is something that you can instanlty feel in hand between cheap and expensive cup. The second difference is just like you said: color, finish etc. It's a little bit similar with guitars: the real difference between expensive and cheap one is feel in hand (electronics etc. you can swap)
Having nice cups is just, well, nice. I just spent €42 (including shipping) on two Acme espresso cups and felt a little twinge, wondering if I was losing the plot. Then 48 hours later (about two hours ago) I spent €55 on two espresso cups from Loveramics (Tens Hundreds Thousands). Maybe it IS mad but I know both sets are going to give me pleasure. So it's worth it.
I got cheap double walled espresso glasses for about a dollar each, they get hot very quick and reasonable wth retention. There's no need to spend a lot of money on cups whatsoever
I bought Espro Cocoa Taster cups and they’re the best. No saucers which I personally prefer but they’re amazing. Finally got two Acme cups and they’re the best.
Really great vision about the coffee cups, al least some professional barist says that the optimal shape of the coffe cups is conical with a rounded bottom, that was I heard about it, thanks!
I love this. Just found your channel and couldn’t agree more, though I think it should be noted that espresso in any form is really inaccessible to people on a real budget. I’m fortunate that my father has what is considered a “low end” machine I get to use at all, but in general the fact that I have to save up for months to even get myself to proper grinder let alone machine that could be considered quality is both exciting and discouraging. I’m loving stepping in to this hobby but the price tag is definitely keeping me at arms length lol
Thanks for the comment! Yeah this is the one hobby that requires significant financial investment just to get started. I wish there wasn't that big of a barrier of entry (although maybe flair/manual machines are now more accessible!). At the end of the day most of us are chasing diminishing returns in a subjective hobby haha.
@@BrianQuan I have found cycling (my other hobby) to quite similar in this way. You can get a decent used bike for a couple hundred bucks, and the higher end gear certainly has diminsihing returns (past a certain price point).
Companies take advantage of the fact that coffee nerds are already spending tons of money on equipment. Your DE1 is 4000$. When you spend this much on a machine (and probably even more for a few grinders), 20$ for one cup is a drop in the ocean. Decent are charging 70$ for a freaking dosing funnel. If that was a tea accessorie it would be insane! 😀
Saying cup shape doesn't matter isn't true at all. What about how wide the cup gets from bottom to top? What about the handle and symmetry of the latte art? What about the stability of the handle? La Marzocco cups tended to have very small handles compared to NotNeutral. The Monty Milk Art Latte Cups by Fellow are tall not wide. Also latte art does depend slightly on the rounded shape at the bottom in mixing milk and espresso. About material: What about the porcelain's ability to retain heat? What about the double walled feature of some cups to not burn the Barista's or customer's hands? As craft baristas, we need to have an eye for every detail. The cup is only one of those details. To ignore this detail is to ignore the thing that you're putting coffee into.

Hi Thank you for great video. I normally have latte in 8 oz cup with double shot espresso. Should I get Acme cappuccino 190 ml or acne latte 280ml cup. What's your advice?
I just ordered my home set up. I spent more than I planned, so will have to go cheaper on the cups. One UA-cam recommended Ikea, and they actually have great options for super cheap. I am getting a lelit Victoria from a local shop just a few blocks from me! Also spent way more on the grinder since most places are out of the Sette. I'm getting the Eureka Mignon Silenzio. They included a lot of free extras including a 12oz bag of beans,, free first time dialing in service for the grinder/beans, a couple shot glasses, a class,, and more. I really recommend them, Clive Coffee. I have never done discord, but I'm excited to join once I get my equipment. I'm excited about your espresso club idea, and definitely volunteer for the Portland area. It will be fun to all do some tastings over discord with beans from roasters in the areas from the members in the group.
I’m gonna argue that for latte art, cup shape matters for symmetry, but only the overall shape and not the small little details inside the cup. I think large 12oz latte bowls require much more skill to pour symmetric art into than a small 8oz cappuccino bowl. Origami brand is probably my favorite.
Serves the same purpose I guess but it's nice to have if you can afford it. Got my folks a few sets of ACME cups n saucers and they love them. Looks awesome and can't wait for it to come in!
