    I’ve owned a BYD Seal AWD performance in Thailand for 2 months. It cost less than a base model 3 here (if you could actually buy one). The fit and finish is excellent with no squeaks or rattles and no panel gaps. The ride quality for a performance car is excellent. The handling and performance of my car is amazing. I’m using the bi-directional charging on the Seal to power my house - videos on my channel for the doubters.

    Great video, thanks. We just ordered the Seal Premium in Australia (mid tier, aud 62k, 650km range). Test drove it yesterday & really liked it. Didn't consider model 3 or any Tesla as we don't like its exterior or interior. Don't care about their charging network either as 99% of charging will be done in our garage

    • @YSA920
      @YSA920 5 місяців тому +7

      Yes same here, Seal Premium on order, test drove earlier this week, plenty of performance with the 230kW engine and finish like you’d expect in a Benz. And in Australia no fringe benefits tax for private use of a company owned EV. Like you we have rooftop solar so all our urban charging will be at home.

      I also have a test drive of the Seal Premium in 2 days time here in Australia. I was sold on a Tesla Model 3, until the Seal Premium specs and price were revealed here in Australia. It completely swayed me away from the Model 3, given that the Seal is $5000 cheaper and still has physical stalks and buttons, for example. For those that aren't aware, here in Australia we are required to indicate left off a roundabout unless it is not practical to do so. Trying to do this with buttons on a steering wheel, is just near impossible/annoying. I also like having a screen in front of me with all the information readily visible.
      I will also charge predominantly at home, so I could care less about the Supercharger network. Also with the increase in Ampol and BP EV charging infrastructure, I dont have any concerns with long distance travel. BYD have nailed it in terms of what you get for your money here in Australia. I'm surprised that in Europe it's quite a lot more expensive. In any case my test drive will be the final determining factor, so I'll wait and see.

      I've gone with Seal Performance. I used to own a Model 3 but had to give it up due to things outside my control. I loved it dearly but I also have this habit that I don't want the same model of a car twice. I find the interior of the Seal very appealing and hope the car, after a test drive later today, will be equally as great as the Tesla was.

      With that range in BYD. Yes, charging at home. External charging cost a lot. And now, Tesla getting momentum, the free charging is removed steadily, if any free today if you do not own a 2017 Model X!

    • @User-cb4jm

      Ordered the same model as you but a few months back. So many polarising and impractical decisions with the Tesla from the lack of HUD, no driver display, no CarPlay, lack of stalks, vital gear selector/door locks/wiper/light controls all in the touchscreen.
      Always wanted an EV sedan/liftback, Tesla is a clear no go but Polestar 2 was ridiculously expensive for optioning basic features into the car, and the LFP Blade battery makes a mockery of the longevity and safety of first gen NMC battery EVs, and still has excellent range.
      Finally the $62k our cars cost, is under £33k which would be amazing value given how crazy expensive all cars are in the UK. Not to mention the base model Dynamic here starting at $50k or £27k

    Indicators on the right used to be the standard for right hand drive cars as the left hand is then free to change gears.
    We've become accustomed to having the indicators on the left side as import manufacturers didn't bother to change to the correct side to save costs.

  • @vasil7410

    The UK is used to driving European cars, which don't move the indicator stalk when converting from left to right hand drive. Cars made specifically for right hand drive markets often have the indicator on the door side of the steering wheel. It's actually ergonomically better to have the indicator on the outside, with the other hand free to operate the gear change and other central controls, whether it's left or right hand drive. European and US makers don't bother shifting the indicator stalk when converting driving side.

    • @User-cb4jm

      Yea in Australia where most cars are Japanese or Korean (Toyota, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, Kia), they all have the indicators on the right, and it’s out of the norm and only on Euro cars where you have to get used to it being on the left.

    I disagree with: "...most EV buyers buy an EV because of the performance..."
    Yes, the performance advantage is a welcome consequence of driving an EV, however, the whiplash-inducing 3 second 0-60 time would (IMO) get old and tiring after a bit and be relegated to a party trick for new passengers.
    The BYD seems to be a solid alternative for someone who'd prefer to set themselves apart from the crowd.
    Thanks for a great review!

      I bought a Model 3 Performance, my first EV, because of the performance. Pretty self explanatory in it's own name. Previously coming from the BMW M3 F80 Competition daily car, this Model 3P does not disappoint. In fact, it is a much faster car in the real world with AWD confident even in the rain it puts the power down like it's no one's business. And the best is that it costs nothing to run whereas BMW M3 used to cost £600 a month on fuel. The only EV that gives me excitement with great handling, track mode, great brakes and steering wheel, double wishbone suspension with multilinks set up that you normally find in very expensive sports cars, i have no other choice, but go with Tesla M3P, and it truly is a bargain. Can't wait to see Tesla releases the Model 3 Plaid Track Package with higher top speed punch.

    The indicators on BYD are on the correct side for a RHD car. Poor old UK gets European LHD stalks.
    LHD cars have indicator on LHS so that right hand can operate gears etc. RHD have indicators (properly) on RHS so leaves left hand for gears, wipers etcetera.
    No mention of efficency?
    kWh/100km or if you must miles per kWh for the handful of countries using those measurements is equally important to range but missing from article.
    The Seal interior is stylish but colour scheme is as drab as a Toyota regrettably. Shame because Atto 3 and Dolphin interiors are much brighter.
    No mention either of Tesla still making you look left to a speedo by not supplying either HUD or instrument cluster in driver's line of sight.

      Yes, I think that while car reviewers enjoy the snappines, the reality is that the rest of us driving ICE cars (at least many of us) take good care of accelerating gently enough for the passengers to be comfortable. Driving alone you can be a bit more careless about it, but how many people have ever floored the throttle of their cars to use their full power? I personally can't remember if I ever have. The UK had no import tariff from most of the good ICE manufacturers in EU for so long, and the rest of the world had to pay 1.5x the cost if outside continental EU - so fair's fair, BYD is a Chinese company and their trade deals may be a lot different with the UK vs their local countries surrounding China.
      Just something the British will have to stop complaining about, as they are no longer the ruling power of the known world.

    I'm not a fan of the haptic buttons for the turn signals either, but I can't imagine the need to use them in the middle of a turn, or a roundabout. Once you're in the turn, you're in the turn. You would need them while going around a roundabout.
      If you are approaching a roundabout and you need to take the 3rd exit, you would press the turn right signal button, then while going around the roundabout, you pass the 2nd exit you should be signalling left to show your intention to exit on the 3rd exit. At this point the indicator buttons are upside down because your steering around the roundabout, so the steering wheel will be at a different angle.

If that were the case, all cheaper cars would have them. Then why put a screen in the rear, which is more expensive than a stalk? Why double glass all over the car when it is more expensive than a stalk? I believe it is just for future purposes related to autonomous driving and software new functionality. Maybe it won’t hold and they get the stalk back in the future. We’ll see. Maybe others will follow.

  • @JamesField
    @JamesField 5 місяців тому +4

    Agree that buttons for indicators are an ergonomic fail. I hate it when people leave the right signals on when they're actually exiting a roundabout, and this really won't help with that. Conversely, I disagree that the BYD has the stalk on the "wrong" side. In fact, I wish all RHD cars had the indicators on the right side. I drove 80's Nissans and Mazdas with the indicators on the right, and it makes so much more sense - how often do you use the indicators, compared with the wipers? And which hand do you tend to have on the wheel the most? Granted it makes more sense in a manual ICE car where you can indicate and change gear at the same time, but many people still rest their left hand on the shifter even in an auto. That makes the indicators a double win for the BYD IMO.

But then, I am comparing the Model Y with the Atto 3 and the ride just wasn't comparable in my mind. But it depends what you're after, I guess.
