If there’s one car that has come to define the electric car revolution, it has to be the Tesla Model 3. Millions have been sold since its introduction, making it the best-selling electric car in the world. So you might be wondering why nobody has thought about doing the same. Why aren’t our roads full of sleek, slippery saloons with efficiency that none of its competitors come close to matching?
Finally, that situation could be about to change. Six years after the Model 3 arrived, BYD is set to release what appears to be a worthy alternative. The Seal is part of BYD’s Ocean range of electric cars and UK bosses are planning to bring the first batch in before the end of the year. The Seal’s arrival will bookend what will be a remarkable assault on the UK car market from BYD. From no presence whatsoever at the start of 2023, BYD plans to have three models (Atto 3, Dolphin and Seal) in UK showrooms.
The Seal will be offered in the UK in two versions - rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive - badged Design and Excellence. The rear-drive version comes with 308bhp while the all-wheel drive version offers 523bhp. Which is a lot. The rear-drive version can go from 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds, while the all-wheel drive one does the same in 3.9 seconds. The AWD model’s straight line acceleration feels every bit as quick as those figures suggest.
Both versions come with an 82.5kWh battery as standard which uses cobalt-free LFP chemistry and BYD’s blade design that places all the cells into thin ‘blades’ that allow for a higher density of energy. The Seal also features what BYD calls Cell to Body construction. That’s a fancy way of saying that the battery is used as part of the structure of the car rather than just being bolted in.

There is a Seal parking under my flat, and it looks gorgeous! Much better than shown in videos.
All EV, whichever brand, are meant for good. I own one BYd and am quite happy with it.
My BYD is not only environmentally friendly (it does not pollute the air in the streets or near the houses where I drive), it also helps me save on my energy bill. The ATTO3 gives me a performance equivalent to 25 km per litre of petrol, rivalling even the best of the hybrid cars.

That's probably too low in terms of efficiency, I own atto3 which gives on an average 13-14 kWh/100km if driven normally
Lucky that the batteries have not self-ignited yet. BYD’s are death traps, but hopefully you got one of the relatively safe ones. It’s always a lottery with BYD.
You can change the sound of the low speed pedestrian warning, in Brazil at least, there are 4 different sounds that can be played as the warning
A lot of (automotive) journalists don't seem to be bothered to put the legwork in and do a (little) bit of research on the object (or subject) at hand.

exactly, teating a new car is a just normal daily routine for them. They don't pay much attention as the real car owners would do.
When a manufacturer does care for pedestrians’ safety, perhaps we don’t need to frown on their effort. I have read the user’s manual of a BYD car which I own, written in well thought out ENGLISH language (I think they have employed an English speaker to do this), with many safety advices as well as environmental care. Well, even from the Chinese company, let’s us appreciate their efforts. Let’s make the earth a better place to live on, together.

I absolutely love my BYD Atto 3, best car I've had to be honest. Great tech, batteries, fully equipped etc. And those seats 🙂 so I definitely would recommend BYD, and the Seal is gorgeous 😍
I once tested the Atto 3. The only thing I liked about it was the price. Less range, less power and less advanced than the Model Y. Theres a reason the Model Y sold so well. Keep your Atto 3, you seem to appreciate inferior cars.
@@robertmandl9326 that's in a first world country. Here in Latin America, the fully equipped Atto 3 is about 10-15 grand cheaper than a base model Y. It's absolutely worth it with that price disparity in mind in some markets. Tesla has really dropped the ball on localization

As for "dropping the ball" - you may compare the worldwide sales figures for both cars. The Atto 3 doesn't even register in comparison.
@@robertmandl9326 what I meant by dropping the ball is that Teslas are fairly priced in first world countries but outrageously priced outside of them. Import taxes are not to blame because my country has tax exceptions on EVs, yet they are still like 10 grand minimum more expensive than their US counterparts.
As for the cheap part... Yeah, they start at like 20k usd in China for a reason. Which IMO makes it more impressive that it can even be mentioned in the same sentence as a model Y
But in China maker the tesla is cheap and inferior cars.
A lot of the big names in the EV world are using BYD's blade batteries.
Yes, even kia uses bladebattery for its ev5 suv in China.
Mercedes-Benz also recently confirmed that it will use BYD’s blade batteries
It is either BYD or CATL's batteries. CATL just came out with a 10 mins charge for 400 km new battery that will be launched in 2024. They conquered the world EVs batteries market and they are too far ahead of all others in this game.

Tesla uses also batteries from BYD.
They were originally a battery manufacturing company before getting into the automotive industry. They are one of the biggest Chinese EV brand in terms of sheer volume. And their battery tech is cutting edge. Have seen their new prototype blade battery safety test on the internet, where they literally drilled a hole through the battery and it didn't exploded like any lithium ion battery.
Love to our Ally Pakistan from China, many chinese have Pakistani wives. They are lovely and submissive and assimilate to our culture really well.

@@_SamUSA_ US Govt intervenes and kills the competition which stagnates the progress/innovation and bad for the end consumer too. They get the same product with new tag and much higher prices. Just as Apple is stagnant nowadays, same model minor modifications and boom new apple product in the market with higher price tag and does same as the previous ones.
No doubt Tesla is the flag bearer of EV tech for now. But it's facing increasing competition not only from China but Asia and Europe as a whole. Tesla is a great tech company but not so good when it comes to manufacturing and after sales services. Either Tesla would have to get it's act together real fast r would be rolled over by the upcoming tough competition from the rest of the world. It's just a matter 6 to 9 years max and Tesla would be facing threatening competition globally.
Unless US saves Tesla's ass as it did by outright banning the Apple killer competition from the Huawei. But this time US doesn't hold any key tech r supply of crucial components which it would block to kill US competition in BEV market (as US did with the smartphones market).
So yeah US also manipulates the market and kills the competition. It's not just China to blame for subsidies etc.
Love Atto 3, done the test drive and it is sold to me the same day. Tossing between model 3 but picked Atto 3 for the safer battery.
Model 3 standard range also uses the LFP chemistry, and is likely using the BYD ones. If safety is your priority then go for Model 3. Not just the battery, the overall frame is rated extremely safe for Model 3.

I am actually quite sad, that the additional advantages of a LFP battery in terms of environmental impact, fire safety or longevity are not mentioned for one of the only 80+kwh lfp battery cars. There are not a lot of those cars out there atm.
And in my opinion, it is not to understimate as a advantage, especially in the long run.
The tesla model 3 highland has an LFP battery in the standard range.

Yes it is a bit of a gimmick but I do think that the rotating screen is something a lot of car manufacturers will be doing in the long run because it is practical and is a lot better than forcing users to use one screen orientation or the other.

@@stevea8099the entire screen is a gimmick. All essential driver information should be infront of the driver. Only a few other contols need to be in reach of the passenger, eg, the ac control. No car needs a centre screen.
There may be some use cases where vertical orientation may come handy, but I honestly think horizontal orientation is the default one...

BYD Seal is a major competitor vs Tesla 3 . Unfortunatelly US blocked its export to US using high tarrif. China market is the major battlefield that BYD is competing with Tesla , together with other China brands (Nio, XPeng etc).
China open their market to Tesla and China gives Tesla equal treatment same as all Chinese manufacturers. US blocked almost every Chinese tech companies. What a competition!

But the Model 3 is more efficient as well when not driven for performance.
And it gets you back on the road faster well.
So the Seal is only a good alternative if you value looks and comfort over literally anything else... and are willing to take more frequent and longer breaks for it.
@@robertmandl9326 well as a city A-B some will just charge it at home every other evening so the charging speed won't be too relevant... Also LFP can be charged to 100% so no need to worry with overcharged... What I want to stress is how you use your car has no relevance on how I use my car...

I'm absolutely blown away at the value they're providing with BYD in Europe. The only thing the luxury brands are going to have on BYD in the end, is branding, but BYD is going to hit the market by storm by providing what Hyundai and Kia does now, but without selling in the budget part of the market for a decade. BYD and many Chinese companies should also come to North America, and drive the prices down because some of the pricing of cars have become ridiculous. A brand new Lexus GX is a 3 year wait right now, and being sold over MSRP, while the Lexus RX is going for $80 - $90k with options on a 5% interest, used is 9% interest. Ridiculous.

@@randomstoragespace BYD seal has no performance version, its 0-60 for their AWD version is 3.7s, which is actually faster than non-performance AWD tesla M3's 4.4s. The tech is no better at Tesla. Tesla's real competitive advantage is their manufacturing process in the Gigafactory, which can keep the cost way below all of their competitors. But not necessarily a win for consumers, as tesla car can easily becomes unfixable when the core structure is damaged in an accident.

I sat in the Seal at the Bangkok motor show this year. I found it quite a snug fit compared to my current SUV. The black interior looks much more sophisticated.

@@Electrifyingcomhi there, I have done test drive byd seal performance, I feel little continuous vibration on the steering wheel column (feels like not enough cushion on the front axle) especially when passing rough asphalt road or uneven road surface, please kindly share your experience on this matter

BYD all the way - i follow Chinees car companies - and their cars are amazing.
Looks great. Model 3 has no stalks which i would find uncomfortable.
Looks good, although I personally have always found hatchbacks much more practical than saloons. A bit pricey as well, although at least you still get indicator stalks and a drive selector.
BYD Seal only sells for $25000 to $30000 in China😁

EV car reviewers are obsessed... OBSESSED with 0-60, range and charging speed. Everything else is secondary.
Me, I want the BMW i4 because of the practicality of the hatch and the build quality.
I don't give a flying fig that it won't do 0-60 in 2.1s. I will charge up on my drive while I sleep, commute, take the dogs to the park and go to the shops like everyone else. And that will be it.
Thank you! It seems they have forgot about the car and focus almost entirely on battery, motors and charging. 0-62 in the 7.x secs, 11kw/100kw+ AC/DC is enough for most people. Something they never really mention, is really important stuff like lane assist and ACC. ACC is terrible in a Model 3, so 0-62 in 3 secs doesnt matter.
imo EV for cross country driving is still primitive.... EV for me is for city driving, charge at home in the evening so whatever number they quote is irrelevant to my requirement
The i4 is a nice car but is expensive, and interior space is compromised because it's ICE platform. It is also not that efficient in comparison to the Tesla M3. Of course, that is less of a problem if you have home charging or do frequent long journeys.

EV's excel as city cars. It is the reviewers who want to put them on twisty roads, drive at speeds for economy testing that are illegal in many countries in the world and do range tests that only involve high speed driving.

My understanding of LFP batteries, is the chemistry that makes them less likely to burst into flames also restricts their charging rate. So I’ll take 150kW over 250 or 350kW if it is safer, and let’s face it, how often are you actually going to get >150kW from a public charger anyway? LFP battery in the Model3rwd is finally convinced me to get one.
I have had a sit in a BYD Seal. Although the seats are firm, it has a luxury feel to it. The displays have a ‘cheap android tablet’ look about them, but at least there’s one in front of the driver (rather than for the non existent rear seat passengers). If they are trying to sell this car as ‘premium’ then they need to have better quality displays than the Atto 3 and Dolphin.
Unfortunate timing for the edit and release of this video. Filmed before the Model 3 update reveal, but released after. At least it still has indicator stalks.
LFP battery works great as long as you don't live in cold climate. Being able to charge it to 100% on a daily basis is pretty nice.
The infotainment system actually is a cheap Android tablet. BYD always use subpar display panels and low performance SoCs.
Q: how often are you actually going to get >150kW from a public charger anyway? A: exactly not very, and even that's directly dependent on one plugging in at a low SOC. the promotion of charging speeds is just a rehash of the same "Bigger Number Psychology" carried over from the promoting of HP/Torque figures from Gas cars, yeah both are PEAK NUMBERS which most drivers don't see or use on a daily basis, so the old game continues. consumers are dumb and the MFG's know it.

The speaker that makes the low speed sound is under the bonet, you can unplug it. Also there is a few choices of the sound, others sound nicer
Unplugging it might be illegal (disabling a safety feature), but switching out the sound sounds good.

I had a model S behind me at the local dump station. I noted this because... Hey cool!
Turned around to talk to someone and turned back 30 seconds later.
The car was gone. Must have passed me by 3 feet. Didn't hear it... at all.
It was Spooky quiet.
I'm agnostic on it, but I can see that some noise would have been safer there. Had I stepped backward, I would have put myself in the path of the car. (2mph bump, no big deal, but I can see a circumstance of a kid getting a foot run over.

Standing next to a stationary Taycan the other day, sound it makes is stupid. Noisier then some ICE cars. Much prefer the silence of my model 3.

Just come back from China. bYD cars are good. Impressive. As a Tesla fan I will define move to BYD on the next model. The battery solid state blade is the safest battery tech. The reviewer may spinning doubts on the battery accuracy but any tech person who knows about car batteries will tell you the BYD battery is way ahead. In China the car is sold for £10k less.
Everything is sold for less in China. Apart from that though not a single BYD car can hold a candle to its Tesla counterpart.
Even Teslas are cheaper in China than in UK.
The BYD Blade battery is LFP, not solid state.
@@xarifa777 Considering that the U8 is slower than the Model X Plaid, costs more and is most likely less efficient I dare say theres nothing to challenge - the U8 is simply not as good as the years-old Model X.

Great video Ginny nice car i did not think much of the first couple of cars they came out with , but this one looks great its come up a few notches . The only thing I would have liked to have seen would have been nicer screens , I have a Genesis GV 60 that the type of screen that would have been fitting. Thank you.

You made a strong point about "taking a chance" with an unknown brand against a similarly priced Ioniq6.........the AWD Hyundai in top spec (which would be a spec match for the AWD Seal) will cost approx €15k more than the BYD Seal here in Ireland......so yes.....I would absolutely........take a chance on the BYD.
Dfference to the i4 eDrive 40.......about €20k
Difference to the Dual Motor LR Tesla Model 3.........about €7k

The only thing most people might have known about Tesla 11 or 12 years ago was that roadster that TG sent up in flames, and until the last 5 years Hyundai and Kia weren't seen as anything above budget brands. 2 or 3 years and BYD will be well known. I'm sure a lot of (electric) bus drivers will be familiar with BYD! Only disappointment with this is the subpar efficiency, but given the rate of BYDs progress with vehicles maybe they err on the side of robustness and hopefully the facelift of this gets better motors still
I am still not that impressed by Hyundai and Kia, but most other car companies really aren't that much better. For the price, I would Mazda (CX-5, CX-90) is making some of the best products right now

They were originally a battery manufacturing company before getting into the automotive industry. They are one of the biggest Chinese EV brand in terms of sheer volume. And their battery tech is cutting edge. Have seen their new prototype blade battery safety test on the internet, where they literally drilled a hole through the battery and it didn't exploded like any lithium ion battery

It would be interesting to compare the quality of the Seal's construction to the Tesla. I checked out the Model 3, and there were so many flaws in the fit, finish, and the quality of some of the materials, that would bother me if I were to own one.
I've checked Model 3 lately in the showroom and I know many owners and none of them nor me could find noticeable deficiencies, you are probably either lying or you really have had a bad luck wich is not relevant overall to generalize a quality issue in Tesla's cars.
The Chinese market is already quite demanding. As a premium offering, these are likely to be better built than the Teslas.

Remember the peak charging rate you mention is a peak and in perfect conditions they NEVER achieve that otherwise. Also it's peak rate as mentioned for the Model 3 & Ioniq 6 is only for a limited time usually a few min only, the far more critical aspect is the charge curve but you never mention that do you???!!??? Therefore the Seal may beat the two others by having a better charge curve. As for pedestrian sound you forget that it is becoming the law in some places so even Tesla may be forced to enable it or have their cars unable to drive on public roads and not able to be turned off by driver. You also forgot to mention it has heated seats and ventilated seats in the front. I also suspect in some markets it will be able to tow as the Atto 3 can tow for example in Australia(750kg).

in Australia there are 3 levels of car, the two mentioned in the video and entry one called the dynamic here, the difference is the battery, 61.4 kWh and the price in pounds is 25,976.25, I have put a deposit on one!

Wow I love it! I love both the exterior and interior colours. The seats look amazing as does the infotainment. I’d definitely say yes to one! My only concern is the size of the boot opening, but I’d still say yes to one!!
I have heard of BYD and know exactly who they are.... However, charging more than a Model 3 for a base model.... is just not competitive.
Despite the fact that I actually hate Tesla's designs, Tesla have their charging network. BYD doesn't. So IF I wanted a saloon car (which I don't) then I would still choose a Tesla.... especially the new Model 3.
The Seal coming to Europe is not the base model. There is a 204hp/60kWh option, but unfortunately its not available in Europe.
I think it looks decent. What if you 'break the seal', the range won't be the limitation.

One of the questions I have asked myself about EVs is whether it's worth it at all to switch over from ICE vehicles. If the answer is yes, then I would consider the battery next. On this issue, there aren't many choices in this world. The choices are BYD, CATL, Panasonic, Tesla, and LG. I may be the more pragmatic type, as my feeling is your EV is mainly to comfortably get from A to B comfortably and affordably. Lastly, beauty is important to me as well, so I wouldn't necessarily go for minimalist.
IF there was a dealership (or any way yo get it fixed), it was capable of 450km, had battery management and a thermal pump for under $50k cdn .. I'd be in.

@@marcgrondin65 In Australia car prices are usually inclusive of federal GST at 10% but exclusive of state governments stamp duty (essentialy another sales tax), annual registration fees and compulsory third party insurance. Along with dealer delivery fees (which BYD and Tesla don't charge) they're commonly referred to as 'on roads'. The Seal is substantially cheaper than equivalent Model 3 here. The mid range RWD version, Premium, sold here meets your criteria, if you take the GST off. We're just waiting for a test drive before confirming a decision to purchase one.

I do wish testers would stop focussing on the maximum charging speeds of EVs when its charging curve is far more important and of greater interest to the buyer. I stop at a lot of public chargers and it is always interesting to see what state of charge they are at and what speed they are getting - never seen anything over 180kW (Taycan). A higher maximum does not necessarily mean faster charging. I was charging the other night, alongside an Ioniq 5 at Ionity. I was getting 149kW, the Ionic 5 was getting 69kW at the point where SOC was the same. Not sure how far up the pack the Ioniq 5 driver was going, but I arrived after him, left before him and I had 190 miles of range on departure. Got me home with 20 miles to spare.

Having now taken a test drive of a seal today. I rewatched this review which I watched when it came out. I found it extremely disingenuous. The rear seat space was like something out of an S class even with me 6foot seat driver setup then checking the rear passenger space. I didn't find anything 'chintzy' about it. Everything was quality from the door opening to the interior. The AWD was ridiculously fast, and the interior made M3 look like a joke. I watched this review back because I took it at face value the first time but having now had my own experience I feel much of the review was poor. No idea why but its like someone paid to sh*t on the car. 🤷♂️

I like the look of the Seal and it seems to be very well equipped, but ............ the price is going to be key. If it's the same price as the new Tesla Model 3 Highland and/or the Hyundai Ioniq 6 they may struggle. I think it would have to be more competitively priced to get a foothold in the European and UK markets.
I agree with the point you made that people may be concerned about buying an expensive EV from a company they have no knowledge of. I'm aware that BYD are planning to create links with some existing UK car dealerships and this might help to allay peoples concerns about where they go if a problem occurs.
They have already linked up with various UK dealers. Stratstone is my nearest one, the are already selling BYD's

@@fatdoi003 largely because they are rather unknown in Europe - the Model 3 is well established and Tesla have a robust servicing network, and also they don’t have Teslas charging network. Although the latter is changing as Tesla opens up those network to other EV’s.

It will depend on where spare parts have to come from. If from China it can take a month or 2 to get spares. So hopefully there will be local manufacturers for spares, even if the cars are from China. It tooka couple of months for an MG windscreen to come fron China to Thailand, for example. So it's best to ask these questions before buying.

I believe the Tesla model 3 (non-performance) long range with acceleration boost does the 0-60 dash in 3.7 seconds? Doesn't the performance model do it in 3.2 which is a lot quicker than this car?
Probably half way between each model as sold without add-ons, but it does have LFP blade batteries and cell to body architecture, those two models are solely nickel, cobalt batteries. So not a bad compromise. I think we can safely say 0-100kmh in 3.8s is fast enough for anyone besides those tracking it.
BEFORE you decide - try BOTH the BYD Seal in an AWD version as well as a Tesla 3 Long Range Highland. I did so (Europe) last week. Even if the Seal comes with a lot of quality it still feels like a version 1 car and I will definitely recommend to wait for a version 2, for the following 4 reasons: 1) In the Tesla you get a much more firm and direct driving experience. You feel it especially while steering and while accelerating. 2) Car efficiency measured as kW to milage is lower in the Seal, probably because of the higher weight (´+ 300 kilo) and poor brake regen. 3) In the Seal the Software UI as well as the functionality feel like a generation or two older. Old school menues, different menues to control driving set-up, lot of scrolling up and down etc. Besides that parts of the SW didn't really work while I tested the car a week ago - especially the parts where assisted driving is involved. 4) DC charging is quite slower in the Seal (150 kW) than the Tesla (250 kW) which will leave you wating a lot at the charging stations. An overall conclusion is that the BYD Seal feels a bit like old school car compared to the Tesla.
