Adopting a horse through a rescue, to me is like adopting a special needs child. Everything needs to be just right. I think what you all do is phenomenal. Love watching your channel.
For me it is simple. If horses don't get adopted, you can't save more. If a free adoption event makes space for you to rescue more horses that are suffering then I don't see a negative. You still do your best to check these people out. What more can you do? I love your farrier. He is so passionate about his work. You can hear it in his voice. He really cares about doing the absolute best he can. ❤
Great adoption event-on the adoption fee issue, advertise it as free, but also encourage donations of what adopters feel they can give-at the time or in the future! The feed donation was a great idea!
It's a good thing that you got someone to go in the trailer; think about it-you are trying to load a scared horse in the trailer, but you won't get in it yourself. Horses need the assurance that you'll get in, too.
Great respect for the farrier! 😮 My grandfather was a blacksmith in northern Wisconsin in the logging days. He spent the winters in the logging camps and my grandmother took care of the farm ,cows, 10 kids. I loved going into his old shop. I wish I could have known him. I hope you’re ok😦
When horses are adopted you save on their feed and Vet fees etc. Of course you soon fill up again! You do a great job, all of the horses you save - it's wonderful. Thank you!! 😁
You guys did an AMAZING job getting those 3 loaded. Reminds me of when you picked up the 3 blacks, but these don't seem to be nearly as wild. What a shame they were never trained. The two bays are really cute. I'd love to see updates on how they come along. I'm just so incredibly thankful they contacted you and didn't take them to an auction. Can't wait to see you get some nice weather up there. You all have such endurance and stamina to get thru those winters. My heart goes out to you. 🥰!!
Did your Farrier need treatment? I'm just worried he worked through the pain... He's obviously a good farrier and doesn't throw in the towel, he cares about the horses, remember to care for him.
These horses burn a lot of calories just to stay warm in the climate you live. It is expensive to feed them there than more temperate climates. It is hard to comprehend unless you live there. I grew up in NC but lived in Alberta Canada for 11 years.
I absolutely love how they find loving homes for the horses. It's brilliant how they give a donation of food or some sorts. I know this isn't the case as its different but I've seen people spend 3000 on a pedigree dog and abuse it, I seen someone who got a dog for free and you'd think that dog was the king of the animals. How much someone is willing to pay for an animal means nothing its if they can afford its food bills and vet bill its the care they put in and the love they have that matters. Xx
Y’all are so wonderful! I love your adoption event, the feet idea was awesome! Those poor three horses at the end looked so scared, but y’all made them feel more comfortable, and you took your time. That Freesian mix is beautiful! Take care and many blessings!
Hello PT from your 45th Parallel fan in Gaylord, MI!! Adoption waivers help promote your organization, new adopters, repeat adopters. I work in dog rescue and free or reduced fee events do work. Some people use the waived fee amt to help provide some of the care items some of the horses that need extras because of their needs. Keep it up!
So glad so many got adopted, including Teddy! I really hope he will have an amazing rest of his life - just like all the other horses of course, too. Oh Pauly, glad you got out there! And still got the job done. Really tough!
Anyone / or organisation which saves horse ... or any animal from cruelty , death , suffering has got to be a good thing , many of these horses would have ended up either in a Canadian or Mexican slaughter house and a cruel death , thank you so much to people like yourselves who work hard with little personal reward for saving so many animals .... good luck in the future !
Thanks Pony Tales for all you do! I love that you do a free event! It's true that the adoption fee is low already, but it's also true that it takes a lot to feed, vet and farrier so many, so as long as they get good homes that's all that matters, and it frees your shelter/rescue up for more that really need to get out of horrible situations! It really is new beginnings for all these beauties qnd because of you all and what you do! People don't always realize the rescued ones can always come back if they don't work out with their adopters, like Ramses did and he found a different home. Don't let anyone discourage you from your mission to save as many as you can. Man, If I lived closer I would certainly volunteer qnd probably take a few home myself!❤
I'm brand new to the concept of "hoof casting". That being said, from a common sense angle, it seemed strange to me that they didn't clean out and disinfect (or at least rinse) the hoof which was covered with poo mud and hay before applying the cast. 🤯
Just found this account not long ago and have decided I have to go through and watch from the beginning .. 12 down , like 60 to go? 😂 but on the note of the adoption fees conversation, I’m a member of a rescue group in my state in Australia. Their system is a membership ($50 a year) and the horses get adopted via a free lease contract. Obviously not gonna work for every rescue org, but I think it is fantastic as 1) it means the rescue has contact and knowledge (and ownership) of the horse to prevent it going into a bad situation again, 2) is great for those like you said who can’t justify that bigger initial outlay for purchase/adoption, but are still perfectly capable of taking care of the horse and 3) it promotes more of a community feeling when you “adopt” one of their horses, you feel support when things are difficult and when things are great. I think you’re free adoption events are a great thing, and what you lose in fees, you’d make up pretty quick in less upkeep like you said.
Cindy your organization has grown so much and you learned from the right people . Horse plus is super and I see you are so much alike now that is great . You still yourself and you run your shelter your way . I hope you will grow just like they did and that you will be able to save even more horses . One thing I would like to see is that you will get more help. I wish you all the best . My dream would be to come to all the horse shelter heros and work with you all for a week .
Adopters are required to provide us with photos of their property including shelter, fencing, etc. that is then compared to satellite imagery. Many of the horses are taken to their new homes by us as well, so quite often we see the homes.
Not only this... I wouldn't go to an adoption place to buy a horse..I'd look elsewhere. BUT...I'd sure look in an adoption place first just to browse & if something caught my eye.. then it's meant to be.. but then..I would make a donation if I thought I'd got a great steal..
you guys should have mentioned if pauly is ok or not after. He was in alot of pain. I have seen the newer vids so I know he was fine after but golly gee lol poor pauly
Hi from 🇦🇺. You could offer free adoptions but ask for a donation to help keep you going. That way you could recoup some costs without charging a set fee. Seeing the work you do I’m sure most people would not mind especially as you are freeing up space to save more horses and it would also keep your donors happy. I do understand these people are taking a load off you with upkeep and medications etc. just a thought. Keep up the good work, it’s coming together for you.
Hi, I was watching another one of your videos and the snow was kind of still there and you had a muddy mess. What we did on our farm when we had rains like that that was just mud everywhere. We took a small tractor and a small Haro behind the tractor. We did not stick the whole harrow down into the dirt. We started off at the top layers and just started cutting crisscross and they started drying out faster. I worry about y’all and the horses on that Muddie stuff. I mean, if you have those equipments available to you I think it’ll be worth a try after the snow melts.
I love the show but im not to crazy about the music its just a bit much!!!! But great job with the way you are all handling these beautiful animals love kindness and patience wonderful combinations!!!! The stories I've seen especially when there's a lot of men handling them is they are NOT in anyway nice kind or an the where PATIENCE and thats just so stressful to them but to biewers as well i cant imagine what a hell of a lot of these beautiful animals have been thru and im sure it hasnt been easy at an point of time for them and thats just awful to have that on or at the back of your mind to say in the least!?!??!!! So thankyou for at least giving them the time they need just to know what is going on andlet yhem have a minute to get ready to hop on to the trailer!!!! Tgats souch APPRECIATED!!!! 👍 They seemed to be able to feel somewhat comfortable by the time they get back to the farm and even still once they get back they've had time for an adjustment period !!! So good on y'all 👍❤️🐎❤️🍁🇨🇦🍁💔💯
So most of my questions were answered by this, I'm glad you guys addressed this... I'm always skeptical of rescues - don't get me wrong I like to see horses helped but there are a lot of places that don't do good enough or they do more harm than good. There's also lots of people who buy and sell on these horses which is not good. Since the last video I watched from you guys started thinking that you guys should really consider hoof boots instead of shoes for many of the horses, assuming they're suitable for the situation.
Really hope the farrier is okay... It didn't look to god with his arm ... Maybe one of you should always be with the horses.. for the safety of the Ferrier
I've been involved in dog and cat rescue, and the phrase "people don't value what they don't pay for" is often used. Personally I think a bag of feed is too low and even $100 would help some. Here in NC the county shelters will have "clear the shelter" free adoption events. I understand the reasoning, but some of those animals end up dumped in nearby county shelters. Are your horses microchipped so if they end up in the slaughter pipeline there's a chance of identifying them?
As mentioned in the video we have the first right of refusal. Legally, an adopter cannot sell a horse without us being notified first to say, no, we want them back at our shelter. All of our horses are microchipped as well, yes.
@@PonyTalesRefuge It still happens, though. It happened to my friend, and to someone at a rescue that I follow. She found him at a kill pen and rescued him a second time. That's good that they're chipped. With cats and dogs, the concern is that "free to good home" animals often end up as bait for dog fighting rings. Even a nominal fee can deter that. It's unfortunate that horses have a meat price or a monetary value that might prompt someone to break that agreement and sell them for a profit. I'm sure you do your best to make sure their adopters are good people, so there's that at least.
When an owner surrenders one or more horses, do they typically make a donation? I realize that some surrender due to economic conditions; but others surrender due to their physical inability to continue to support the horses. Just wondering... (You indicated that some people who attend the free adoption event also donate.)
Surrenders don't usually, but some have in the past a time or two. We offer the chance for a reduced surrender fee if the horse is UTD on certain cares and sometimes people will just pay the full surrender fee anyway as a donation :)

Wow! Good job. How long did it take to get the 3 surrenders trailered? My neighbor has 3 like that and I am anticipating half the day to get them on.
About an hour and a half! Slowly but surely :)
Re trailering livestock why do most of the trailers have no ramps so the beast don't have to step up or step off.
Please repair the loose trailer metal at the floor before a leg gets hurt.
I noticed that too. The first horse kept bumping it and would back off. I hope they do fix it or have fixed it…this post is 6 mths old.
