Tesla Model Y - Blackout Emblems with HyperDip
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 вер 2024
- The Tesla Model Y was the first Tesla to come with blacked out trim. As Tesla continues to move towards a full lineup of blacked out cars, it is interesting that they still come adorned with chrome emblems, front and back.
Although they don't look terrible, they could look better in black. HyperDip has provided us with an emblem blackout kit to show how their new product stacks up against traditional Plasti Dip.
HyperDip is a DIY application process that comes in a Satin finish and 2 Gloss finishes. Simple spray on, peel off application means most anyone can do this. The best part is that since it is not a paint, it wipes right off, so no longer do you need to worry about overspray.
I am very pleased with how this turned out and love the new look of our Tesla Model Y. We have completed that full blackout look and the car feels much more complete.

Bearded. Not sure what your job is, but please consider a career in audio book reading. Your voice is vey clear and calming.
ha! interesting thought.
I love this guy. He's the Bob Ross of Tesla.
No mistakes, only special little trees
Nice job! Just ordered a LR MY yesterday. The blacked out emblems and DIY PPF for the front and rear doors is top of list after delivery. Appreciate the great content and deals you are able to pass along!
Cheers!
I put 3 brush coats + 7 heavy coats and it was too thick to peel off. The whole thing was peeling even though I was pulling away from the angle. On second try, I put light brush coat every 5minutes for one hour. it was much easier to peel off. It came out pretty good.
Yea, depending on temp and humidity, the way coats go on will vary. Its not as simple as 1 way unfortunately. But, when you get it right, it looks great and stays! Never had a peel issue
I have watched so many of your videos and I was shocked to realize that I was not yet a subscriber. Thank you for the tip. My 2018 Model 3 will appreciate the new look.
My shock is shared! Haha
I found the Plasti-dip to not be quite as stretchy as this, but holds extremely well regardless of weather conditions.
This held up great even in car washes
You must read my mind. Have been debating on ordering this for weeks. Thanks for the video fellow Indy Suburbs guy! Keep up the good work.
Cheers
Just picked up my 2021 Model Y today. Placed an order for the dip. Thanks for the video very well done.
Cheers, congrats!
Ha! Funny you posted this today. I just received two cans of the hyper dip last night. Can’t wait to try it!
HA, now you know how to do it on the Y! Enjoy it! I am happy with how it turned out.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy For sure. Thanks for the video!
@@BeardedTeslaGuy as sReeeseEe
@@BeardedTeslaGuy you weren’t kidding. This stuff is great! Easy to work with! Had a bunch of over spray, but it wipes right off
Great vid. I'll do the same when i get mines. 👍🏾👏🏾
Cheers
Love it man, thank you and well done!
No problem 👍
I ordered MY yesterday. I'm down to try this
Congrats to you! Fingers crossed for a quick and uneventful delivery!
My man! Thank you! Been looking for something like this for a while.. definitely giving this a try
cant really mess anything up, and if you do, you just remove it. I am way happier with it than i thought i'd be.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy I’ve been wondering how this would hold up against car washes.. I do ONR+Beadmaker once every two weeks. Even if it lasts few months it’ll be easy enough to re-apply. Oh! New video idea- Tesla paint care and car wash tips/instructions
Nice job, as always!
Thanks again!
whoa very nice job there, thanks for sharing!
Cheers
BTG I really enjoy your videos, I’ve learned so much. I just took delivery of used 20 MY performance, with white interior so far I’m loving it. Thank for all the helpful insight
Fantastic! Congrats! I hear 0-60 in 3.5 sec is good for your overall health
May have to give this a try on my logo's, good job!
Super easy!
Looks great...well done!
Cheers.
I was looking for something like this. Thanks.
Cheers
I looked into HyperDip and just couldn't justify the premium you pay over PlastiDip. On small projects like emblems etc. you can justify the premium for ease of use/clean up but imagine doing 4 wheels and using 7 coats of HyperDip, can you imagine the number of cans you would have to use? And did you see how easily it tore and you were able to clean it off? Now imagine that same material on your wheels, that level of protection is just not the same as PlastiDip. Again great for small projects, too expensive for anything larger. Great vid!
Interesting perspective. Thanks for sharing.
Same parent company as plastidip.
As someone that has this on the wheels, it actually works VERY well. The premium is worth it in my unbiased opinion. The kit is 5 cans for $80-90. People notice your wheels.... don't cheap out and get a cheap product that LOOKS cheap.
Little messy, but nice finish ! PS: Agree with comments below: radio voice !
Wow what a great explanation video! Very precise & understandable. Very much appreciated! Did you take speech courses? Your words are very clear, more so than normally heard on YT. Thank you for sharing!
Haha thanks, appreciate you
I’m not sure where the blackout craz is coming from. I love Crome.
Lol, I’ve heard from a couple people that say the same. Something to the effect of “it reminds me of police cars back in the 80’s”
Thanks Friend
cheers
I used plastidip for my emblem. It is exactly the same as this stuff, plastidip is $6 for black, $15 for red. Turned out perfect. My red emblem looks great against the white exterior. This hyperdip is too expensive and it looks to be the same as plastidip. Just use rubbing alcohol to clean, no need extra stuff this hyperdip includes.
Ya im with you. This hyperdip looks good, but ive not seen any difference except price when using plastidip. It looks like most of the extra cost for this kit is for the extra can, pre cleaner, tape, cloth and tool. I spent $6 on plastidip, had my own painter tape, own cloth, soap and toothpicks. So i dunno, while this kit is nice in that it provides evrything you need, you coiuld get away with doing this much cheaper just buying plastidip.
How is it holding up over time
Question, I believe I saw your Tesla has PPF on the front? If so, did the Hyperdip have any affect to the PPF afterwards?
Perfect timing for the video. I had ordered my hyper dip package for my newly delivered Model Y, but was hesitant on spraying the emblems. Thanks for the tutorial.
I had a question, though; how long of a wait between the dry coats in the beginning?
5 min, they dry really fast since its not a wet application on the dry coats.
how has it stood the test of time?
Nice job! I was debating on doing the same, but abstract ocean has a direct replacement that looks really clean. I went that route and was a quick install on my white MY
Sounds like it worked out nice. I love the contrast look being completed with black emblems
@@BeardedTeslaGuy same here. Something about a white car with black accents grabs my attention instantly. It’s amazing that in the 90s only the beater cars looked that way. Now it’s just so clean looking!
Much better choice than the high-schooler-dip option.
I checked out Abstract Ocean and did not see that they have blacked out emblems for the Y. Am I missing something?
@@scotttang6229 Tesla made them take the product down due to copyright.
Would Hyper Dip spray ruin ceramic coating?
You can do this with PPF in car?
Really curious how these hold up to washing and pressure washing. I obviously understand the common sense of not blasting them with the pressure washer but just curious about strength over a couple washes.
Same. Need some time with it to get a good feel for durability
Yeah, I agree… Curious to see how that pans out
To my eye , De badged looks the best, followed by black logos, followed by chrome logos.
I ended up de badging my car, but my wife thought it might look better with the emblems back on. At least on the rear
I had purchased vinyl covers for the chrome logos… And I ended up sticking it right on the paint. Looks great, don’t have to worry about my towel getting hooked on it when I’m washing it. I can’t speak for a longevity, but my gut says it will hold up well
Also it was good timing, because I think Tesla is cracking down on other companies using their logos!
I literally did this on my emblems and my aero covers for my model Y to black them out. It's lasted very well so far for 6 months, many washes, power washing, AND winter. Huge fan!
FWIW I plastidipped my entire hellcat from red to white then black. Kept it for years even drove it through the auto wash monthly. Never had a problem, doesn’t tear or fade. The only trick is the prep and spray heavy heavy thick even flat coats.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy curious to see after a year how it held up with pressure/hand washing?
I dipped the Y in Madi Gras Satin White
Nice
Well, I just ran across this video so I'm wondering how the stuff is holding up. I just got my model Y and I'm paying to have PPF professionally installed as I do not have a garage and I live in a dusty environment here in San Diego. They are actually removing the emblems to put the PPF on! Then re-installing them. They wanted to know if I wanted them blacked out and I said no. Actually, glad I did since I think DIYing the project with HyperDip looks like a better and cheaper option. So let me know how they are holding up.
It held up fantastic, and I drove it through the Carwash frequently
I tried to PlastiDip my new emblem on the back of my Model 3 yesterday. Because I didn’t like how the glossy black finish didn’t match the other matte finishes on my badging. It didn’t turn out well so I just placed an order for new badging in the correct finish. I’ve never had an issue with PlastiDip until this. This HyperDip seems to dry quick if you were only 10-15 min between coats.
Supposed to dry about 5 min between coats, but that is weather dependent. So warmer temps, this will dry fast.
Where did you order the badging from? Tesla did a crackdown on sites selling badging etc last week. I’m trying to find a carbon fiber or gloss black T logos for my M3 otherwise I’m thinking of trying this stuff out that Bearded Tesla Guy reviewed.
@@Koffee_Kong I bought a few on clearance from RPM and AbstractOcean after they got the cease/desist order last week. The new one I found on EBay from a highly-rated seller that probably was flying under Tesla’s radar. If these don’t work I will try the HyperDip on the red/black one I have on the car now from AbstractOcean.
@@doc2w534 ah ok. Smart to do that
Now, how easy is it take off the black from the emblems? I leased mine and I will have to take it off eventually, or it will have to come off even ion IO don't do it myself?
Super easy, just peels off when you are ready
How and where do I order the accessories like the floor mat screen protection and mud flap.
All in the description
Does this hold up on touch surfaces, like door handles?
It’s supposed to
This man is too excited about this product lol
I like it
Hi! How many Tesla cars can you use this kit for?
a few at least
Have you washed your car after applying this? Does it hold up ok? Has anyone else washed their car after applying this?
Washed it many times at the automatic Carwash
I looks amazing on the white ! Great job and great video !
I have a Metallic Geay Model 3 '21 so already comes with chrome delete and was looking into attempting this (also got a read emblem that spells " T E S L A " to swap from the original T logo. But its also chrome and was looking into the Hyper Dip. I guess my question is, if i don't like how it looks because its too dark ? Can i get the emblems back to original chrome ?
Yep, you can remove the hyperdip if you don’t like it
I just bought a radar detector and I’m trying to figure out how to wire it into my Tesla. I’ve seen a few videos of people wiring them into the rearview mirror/lights. Any ideas on how to do it or who could install that?
Haven’t looked into anything like that. There is a 12v outlet in the arm rest of the center console. I’d start there
Look on Telsa Motors Club for posts with DIY instructions.
What happens when you go through a carwash?
Wouldn’t be very useful if it comes off in the wash
The current Model Y comes with chrome or black?
Chrome emblems
Hey man...the pre-dip cleaning solution that the kit comes with....can it be used to clean other things off the car too? I.E. a bit of residue for example
Possibly
@@BeardedTeslaGuy but would that mean it also wipes clean the ceramic and sealants too?
Awesome video. Inspiring! It looks like your front has PPF. So no adverse effect on the surrounding PPF when you peeled the dip? Even on the edge of where the PPF ends?
Zero issues
@@BeardedTeslaGuy thanks for the reply
does the same thing as plastidip, but seems much more expensive. What's the upside?
It is a cleaner finish and holds up better. It's basically plastidip with a better formula.
Great job, i like this product... Did u miss inside the the letter A ???
Did the best I could, left it as is for now. Very tight opening. I hear a toothpick can also be a good tool to use FYI.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy yea that's what i would use doing that, i feel u did good tho.. 👍🏽👍🏽
Would you recommend ppf then ceramic coating and then emblems or a different order. I’m picking up my model Y tomorrow :)
PPF, then Emblems, then Ceramic
@@BeardedTeslaGuy thanks for the quick reply!!
Just curious, how has the hyperdip held up since this video?
I don’t have that car anymore but it held up great, even with going to the Carwash frequently
Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I tried your discount code, Bearded, a few times and it keeps saying it's not valid for the HyperDip wheel kit I'm attempting to buy at the dipyourcar website...
Ah, the wheel kit is probably not linked for the discount.
Would you recommend doing before or after getting ppf?
either, doesn't matter. May be easier to remove from paint than from corners of PPF?
Does it last?
Yes, all PPF materials are designed to last, although at different timelines
hey find a good spoiler?
I see a lot of new options out there. Was starting to think about trying one out.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy nice! I tried several different ones on Amazon, they don’t fit perfectly, I was concerned to order those from individual website. Please find one ASAP and review😜
@@Nk68595 I just ordered one from ThinSGO (Amazon). Real Carbon fiber for $199. We’ll see how it is in a few days.
@@diegofalcon9056 nice dude keep us posted
@@BeardedTeslaGuy I am trying to sell mine. I got it from RPM Tesla and then we decided to buy a M3 instead of a MY so now here I sit with a brand new in box MY spoiler. Let me know if you are interested. Asking beat offer. Thanks for this vid. I may try this stuff out.
Can you do this on ppf or will it stain the ppf?
Yes you can!
Can this be done after PPF ?
Yes indeed! I have PPF on the hood.
Does it come off if using a power wash ?
Nope
I have already bought a can of Plastidip, but have watched these guys videos here on UA-cam. I'm not brave enough to do the tiny letters.
Super easy!
Any suggestions on how to dip the chrome door handles?
I guess you'd need to figure out how to remove them from the car completely to do that.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy I guess in this case, the wrap may be an easier fix... Thanks for your reply!
is this safe to use over a 3m vinyl wrap?
Yes of course
Will this stay on in a car wash or pressure washer?
It better! I have not tested it out on that yet, but it should.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy lol
Dual motor emblem looks really crooked when you taped it off
I see that too, but it’s actually just the angle of the lens and light.
What’s the difference between plastidip and hyper?
Hyper is more durable and has a smoother finish
@@BeardedTeslaGuy I just ordered the aerosol can and have the other tools at home. I’ll use probably rubbing alcohol on the emblem or car guys spray to clean it
How does it look after car wash ?
Has held up perfect. Many car wash visits
So how does it look today?
Still looked great a year later!
Can someone explain what he did wrong that the letter emblems didn't come out as good?
More even coats would help. Those letters are really hard because of all the angles
Will this hold up in a car wash?
We will find out over time. Shouldn’t be a problem though
For others stumbling on this video like I did, my recommendation is to NOT do this method and just buy black plate covers or replacement decals for a fraction of the cost and time. This is not as easy as it looks. It took me 3 attempts to get the front logo and I’m currently on my 3rd attempt for the back logo. The sides of the logo are easy but peeling between the top and bottom part of the logo is frustratingly difficult. It constantly wants to pull off the dip from the logos as well. I’ve tried pulling away, using the tool, thoroughly cleaning, low humidity, plenty of time for drying, it doesn’t matter. There is a reason they give you 2 cans of the stuff and a mile of painter’s tape. I wish I never saw this video. I blame myself for not looking for other alternatives before dropping almost $60 on this method.
Wow, I’m sorry you had such a hard time with this. I thought it was really easy to do, and a lot of people shared the same. Make sure you are doing very light coats. 7-9 light coats should do the trick. Get a toothpick to help you remove excess that doesn’t peel off easily. Make sure once you get a flap started, pull away from the logo.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy Yeah, I don’t think drying is the issue. I’m doing 7 coats. I just can’t get the piece in between the logo off without pulling it off the emblem too. 3rd attempt on the back logo was a failure as well so we’ll go with attempt #4 tomorrow. What seems to help is making sure the small strip between the logo is attached to a larger piece so its easier to grab with the tool.
3 days too late for the discount 😞.
Oh man...well, at least you can see how to do it
Any new news on the tax credit?
All just talks right now
@@BeardedTeslaGuy Thanks for answering. I appreciate it.
Will this damage my PPF ?
Nope
@@BeardedTeslaGuy awesome, thanks!
2nd attempt and I managed to screw it up... haha.
Man, that sucks! I’m sorry it didn’t work. Good thing is it peels right off
@@BeardedTeslaGuy , 3rd try worked nicely. Thanks for the review!
Should’ve just removed dual motor lol
WOW!
That's just a super expensive PLASTIDIP. wOw!
It’s not cheap
$50 dollars is not reasonable i did it for $6 with one can of plasti dip
Nice
Looks/acts just like plastidip. Seems like just buying new emblems would be easier, last longer and look better. Thanks though
Welcome
Was thinking the same thing but just for the letters. Looks great on the decals!
Is it safe to spray on XPEL Satin PPF?
yes
