A lot of people see it as just being a flex track but personally I just straight up like the song. I think it very pleasing melodically and rhythmically.
It's a great workout song
Yeah, it's just a part of new age instrumentals becoming more unpredictable and abstract. With a few listens, you can follow it more, and enjoy it much more.
Ofc it is.
@notwastd you probably suck at guitar.
Curious, what did you find rhythmically pleasing about it? I agree on the melodic part but rhythmically it actually seemed very standard to my ears
GOAT is a “flex” track if there ever was one
That's almost the entirety of Dream Theater's discography lol
@derp derpin I think if they watched video they would have gotten it a little more
@derp derpin The song is very freeform in a way. As great as the drummer is, he doesn't create as foundational, intricate or compelling grooves as say a Gavin Harrison, Danny Carey or Baard Kolstad. The choppy hihat "groove" the drummer has going makes it hard to really fall into the flowing music from the guitars.
Saw Polyphia support Coheed a couple of years ago and wow. CHON are similar but more jazzy and less heavy
bruh the best description of this song. these bruhs flex the bd energy hard. so much good music out there if you look. and im glad these guys show that.
"O.D." is off of the same album and is a much more cohesive song like Ryan was talking about.
Agreed.
a better song, but still in the same vain, I'd suggest Culture Shock for these guys, more bluesy and smooth and accessible, without so many intricate parts.
No it isn’t; it’s just more of the same. Saucy is much more song oriented.
@@ludo4560 Renaissance is such a good album
@@ludo4560 I'd suggest 400z to them tho.
I legit jumped in joy when I saw this notification. Not even exaggerating.
Dude same
i had just gotten a little high, and saw the notification and just knew it was gonna be a good night
SAMEEEEEE
Bruh samee
The main guitarist Tim Henson has literally said he tries to make his guitar “rap” over the beat
This was my first listen as well and I couldn't disagree with you guys more. Technical skill alone never keeps me coming back to a song, but this is playlist because I love the groove and melodies. It keeps you off-balance while rocking you along with the beat off and on. To me, this is a well composed instrumental that sounds amazing and holds my attention.
Totally agree. Moreover, it creates certain mood, part melancholic, part dreamy.
I could compare it to the Liszt etudes. They are a display of technical skills, but they are masterpieces of music as well
There is so much density of ...er, musicality?, So I can get that it's a lot to take in if you're not listening to a lot of off-kilter tech guitar music. But yeah, the drum lines are so great, flipping between groove and ornamentation and little sections which are doing that melodic rhythm thing, the bass is *mwah* and everything is so locked in together. Honestly, the whole record is a lot of work in one sitting, but this track on it's own gets me hyped.
@@johnbehan1526 It seems they're still not used to hearing a lot of dynamism/complexity in music so they just think of this as only a sort of demonstration of skill. Just give them a simple rock rhythm and they'll love it...
@@reishin6 it just isn't very interesting as anything more than a demonstration, at least to me... this coming from a guitarist who can shred.
@@Vivi_9 I'd beg to differ, as another guitarist who can shred.
The Only Thing They Fear is You - Mick Gordon
Marigold - Periphery
I've found the tracks off The Most Hated EP are an easier gateway into Polyphia. G.O.A.T. showcases the technical skills of each member, which is why it's typically the most recommended (and reacted to), but the stuff on Most Hated has more of a grove that's easy to enjoy. "The Worst" in particular has a great groove that's easy to slide into. No joke, that one I think would be right up Ryan's alley in particular. Even if you don't do an official reaction to it, I highly recommend putting it on and giving it a listen.
Came to say Renaissance and The Most Hated might be better albums to do first. "Euphoria" and "40oz" were my introduction to the band.
Yeah, I don't know why people recommend GOAT if they are trying to get people into the band. You don't need to go to a different album. Saucy is funky as shit. Death Note is tight as well.
I agree about The Worst. GOAT was my intro and I was mind blown by it, but my fascination was primarily technical. The Worst was the first track that made me bob my head and really groove with them for the entire length of the track. Now, I've actually come to love GOAT musically, but undeniably my first reaction was closer to "holy hell, a human with only ten fingers played that" than it was to "I want to put this on repeat all day." I'd also say Saucy and maybe Icronic or So Strange are incredibly smooth musical tracks as well.
Went and listened to "The Worst" after reading this comment, you've solidified this band for me lol. Now I'm gonna go listen to every album and EP they have, thank you for sharing!
this
Should have watched the official video instead
My thoughts exactly
They did, they commented on it at the start, but just didn't show it in their video
I respect the opinion, though I think there's perhaps a bit more music in there than you realize. There's a definite chorus and verse structure to GOAT. Maybe try "yas"?
I know these guys would love the groove of YAS.
Also the track "Look but don't touch" has an amazing music video, it's worth checking out for the video alone.
@@Panyc333 They have a very difficult time picking up simple grooves, so I'm not sure you're right about that.
Yes or Death note would have been way better choices
These guys dont recognize nuance, Progressive and Math rock is going to go way over their heads.
Plini - Electric Sunrise, Polyphia - Impassion, Intervals - Libra, David Maxim Micic - Living Room
Saw them all live already and my life has never been the same! Literally!
Cascade is one of my favorite Plini tracks.
Yessss Plini absolutely blew my mind. First time I heard them was LIVE and I was just blown away!!
@@mixtlilozano465 same! I saw them back in february of last year and it was an incredible experience.
The end of living room
One of the guitarists, Tim Henson, said some of the inspiration for this song came from Breakfast by Jaden Smith. Specifically around the last 3rd of Breakfast there's a keyboard part he was referencing.
There’s a really good vid of him breaking that down on video with the program and everything
POLYPHIA “GOOSE” c’mon now been asking for at least a couple years now
Po po think it's water playboy, but it mufuckin grey goose baby!
Yeah Goose is def what they’re looking for in terms of “patterns” and “melody”
Yeah i enjoy goose more
Very groovy
Do champagne by polyphia. Tons of groove!
Ehh i think they'd feel similar about that. Too much mindless guitar wankery in that song
I dont think so at all. The groove is very consistent. This song is very abstract. Champagne is 100% the intro song for this band.
@@LagginPotato Still way better than anything from NLND though.
@@LagginPotato OK Kevin.
This is the song that got me into Polyphia, it's a great starting point
Im listening to their music for the groove. Yall are crazy for this one
I don't think George or Ryan can pick up on grooves very well. They tend to completely miss the rhythm even in straight 4/4 songs like this.
@@ixcaliber bro when the tzewvrvrvrvrrrrrtzrwrzeeee hit i was done
@@ixcaliber ehhh i kinda disagree, sure of course this track grooves and so does alot of other metal/prog, but the secondary focus on instrumentation and complexity can kinda distract, it doesnt hit the pocket as tight or as groovy as the type of music that they are used to listened to does. It does it with lot more intracy and with a focus on instrumentation then hip hop tends to.
@@justindobbelsteyn7851 This track rides the pocket WAY more than the music they usually listen to. These guys just have a bad ear to be honest. They prove it time and time again when they praise generic basic trash and neg generational composers.
A beautifully weird track, but I longed for some drums in the intro. Said and done, here you go: enjoy! 😅🤩😂
ua-cam.com/users/shortshIzAJdN9lR0?feature=share
This is so groovy and catchy, I don't understand how you can say otherwise. Everyone in this band is not only a great musician but a great song writer as well.
@derp derpin You come off as extremely salty and petty over their opinion. You've posted essentially the same comment 4 times on this video. If you are so irritated by LIV, go follow a different channel.
Man they're so skill-less that they immediately assumed that the drums were a digital track lmfao, The guy is literally playing them LIVE.
@@TJG421 Not really, it's just that drums are getting more and more overproduced. No fault to the drummer.
Wow, just realized we haven't seen an August Burns Red reaction.
We haven't had a reaction to Epica yet, either
My gods, you’re right
Or all that remains 🙁
And neither a Periphery reaction. Yeah Stranger Things and Icarus, but that's not Periphery lol
@@andreas9084 on that note I think they’d like TesseracT as well. Really pretty sometimes but also still definitely metal
Man the bass guitarist is so good
Theyre all immensely talented
They play so tightly as well, have you guys heard the live version?
It’s arranged like a pop song: chorus, verse chorus verse chorus solo chorus outro
You know I had to pull up. Shoutout to them Texas bois in Polyphia🇨🇱🔥
Saucy, The Worst, or Goose are fantastic examples of their very melodic side. They tell a story and groove so hard
All these, plus OD, are fantastic melodic takes.
No love from renaissance? Lol that’s the best album
Nasty ft Jason Richardson from them is a really cohesive song to give a listen to

The intricacy in the arrangement is goat status. This track is so well composed. The way the bass and drums work together to fill in the gaps of the guitar work while complimenting everything else so quite beautiful
Watching the video while listening really helps you feel it. To see them doing their thing while creating these amazing sounds makes it so much better.
*AND* importantly, the camera and scene switches help to follow the distinct sections a little more easily
Cult Of Luna - Three Bridges
You've mentioned this band in one of your videos, they just released a new album the other day so now would be a great time to react to them
@Morbid Angel is better than Death Account suspended?
I'm glad you guys finally checked out polyphia and I highly, HIGHLY suggest giving a listen to their song "Finale". I think it might really have what you guys are looking for showcasing both skill and musicality. Once again, another great video guys! Keep up the great work.
Polyphia Isn’t my favourite band, but they definitely have a unique vibe
I prefer CHON, in the "Math" progressive guitar-led rock genre.
I felt the same way when I first heard the song but after a while I hear that main riff in my head constantly. It is a seed that totally grew roots inside my head. Tim Henson plays this with distortion during a stream with Herman Li (DragonForce), which was pretty cool to watch him actually play the song.
Was just about to request this reaction before I checked myself lol. Glad you guys did this. 👍
What? This track is incredibly musical and has recognizable recurrent melodies and a standard song structure. There’s definitely verses and choruses here. I don’t know how you can think this isn’t a “song.”
They just don't like the song, but don't want to offend the viewers. So they speak about it in a roundabout way,
Untrained ears.
Polyphia is amazing. They play complex music while making it catchy and melodic. Seen them live and they pull it off. I can see how it may not be for everyone but I feel like anyone can appreciate this. May be for the more technical music-minded listener.
Polyphia has a song with Cuco that has lyrics and is a song that y'all would want to listen to! It's called "So Strange" by Polyphia and Cuco
Fantastic song
I was thinking about you reacting to this 2 days ago!!!! So stoked!

Back Burner by August Burns Red is peak OG Period of the band
Some people were claiming that there was no way that Polyphia actually played this song because it was too accurate for what they were doing. So they did a live playthrough and posted it on youtube to prove that they could do it. They're crazy talented. I highly recommend checking out the music video.
Everything they do is Instrumental, however a lot of their stuff does have the rythm/groove/transitions that you guys like. I recommend their song Champaign or their other song 40oz. Super good stuff

Long one but essential in my opinion; Porcupine tree - Anesthetize (Live in Tilburg)

They did one Porcupine Tree early on and that's it! There are so many Porcupine Tree songs they would dig!
The stuff from The raven that refused to sing and the guthrie govan solos, I mean come on!

So so so glad you guys checked this band out! Been calling for you to check out Polyphia for a few years. I dare you to try them again. Those grooves are incredible and I could tell you were digging it at points. They solo *over* the grooves but the groove is still there. Thanks for the video!

Egypt - Symphony X
This Time - Life Of Agony
Absolutely to Egypt. They've only reacted to one song by Symphony X, and it was a poor suggestion. Egypt, or Dehumanized. Or even Church of the Machine. Not necessarily their best songs, but accessible to those not steeped in the band already.
Life of Agony...that's going old school...few songs off Ugly would be a good reaction
dude this channel blew up lol : ) came here when it was few k good job
I get where y'all are coming from in finding a groove to follow. I know that I love that myself most of the time. The thing that gets me like groups like this is not just the skill but also the sonic surprises. Expecting a groove in my head and then something different hits and it feels like I am off but in a good way. Kind of like a small hit of adrenaline because of the unexpected. That's what I personally look for in good prog.
Three bands that you guys really need to check out:
Dance Gavin Dance - Inspire The Liars
Leprous - The Price
Cult Of Luna - Nightwalkers

How tf can ou even think that?
they said the same thing about metropolis pt 1 by dream theater. just showing off skills. i think that was their first dream theater song, and didn't realize that prog songs are longer and often have instrumental sections where they just go off.
He's right though. Being able to play doesn't mean being able to write a song.

ive watched you pleny of times, but seeing polyphia finally earned my sub
We need an august burns red reaction from these guys. Please do composure or invisible enemy by abr.
Well, I think we're just so used to listen patterns and repetitive songs... I mean, art is free and doesn't follow any symmetry necessarily; even though, polyphia has perfectly engineered their songs so they go along simple catchy beats but freeing their guitars, bass and drums to speak between those beats, and as in any conversation, they all make sense together 🤯.
YOOOOOO great pick man Polyphia and all those math rock bands coming up are so good. This band in particular is changing how a lot of guitarists approach the instrument. Hugely influential band.
Been waiting on this
I love the freestyle comparison. On point!
PLEASE get into some August Burns Red. First reaction should be “Invisible Enemy”. Nothing like some marionettes jamming out some metalcore tunes 🔥
Or some Prada, spiritbox perhaps
I'm not sure that's the best intro song from them, interesting video and heavy track but I think there are better songs for a first listen
@@BaceJeleren after being in the ABR fan group, nobody would ever come to an agreement on the best introduction lol. I’m a fan of all of their work, i would just think they’d have a good time watching the music video while listening to that crushing track. Yes! You guys finally did it!
The crazy thing about this instrumental is that the drums, bass and the two guitars never overlap each other. They always are a key higher or lower doing each their own thing, while keeping it in rhythm with each other! It's actually pretty wild to see the dedication put into this song! (Yes.. Making this will take weeks if not months. This is not some psychedelic hippie commune sh*t where they "just came up with it").
Highly skilled musicians! The drummer is definitely keeping them together on this👌🏻.
70% of the guitarist out there can’t comprehend this song. Lol, it’s so good. How this intricate song comes together without stepping on each other’s parts.
haha love you guys but this one went straight over your heads! and that’s ok. i have listened to a lot of progressive rock in my day and i’d say polyphia is one of the most unique melodic beautiful music i’ve listened to. There insane amount of melody and music to their playing and not just a masturbationfest. But I get that it’s not for everyone.
Yep. Not the only one that's gone over their heads, musically, either. Unlucky ig
The song itself gets better when u understand complex ideas on guitar, guitar players love this song (like myself)

PLEASE LISTEN TO BAD, SAUCY OR CRUSH. Dive into their discography, they’re amazing once they grow on you. I’ve seen these guys live 3 times and they’ve yet to disappoint. Super, super talented group that’s MILES ahead of everyone else in the game from a compositional standpoint.
Saucy is hot 🔥
@@hortonwho211 literally my alarm 🔥
I've always thought that this is their most cohesive, accessible and memorable track. Skillfully played, but not really a flex track full of meedleemees.
I actually grew up in the same area as most of the guys in Polyphia and had some mutual friends with them. One of my friends told me the bassist, Clay Gober, would literally lock himself in his room to practice and only came out to get food or use the restroom. Needless to say the man can play, he has put in the work!
Yesssss hyped for this reaction
This is groovy as hell and way more than just a NAMM demonstration. To me, the bass playing in particular on this track is *premium*: really tasteful and understated, but when it steps forward to take the limelight, it's setting the rhythm and telling the melodic story, but still bridging the guitar and drums beautifully.
If it was longer, it would overstay it's welcome, but I genuinely enjoyed the rhythmic and harmonic twists and turns and I didn't need a vocal or a hooky melody line.
They are self described as rapping with their guitar
Hahaha, oh that's interesting. I never thought of it that way.
I always enjoy hearing the perspective and analysis and insights and interpretations that you both bring to the music that you review. It feels a little bit like listening for the first time again. So thank you for giving us a new perspective on the music, and for being brave enough to challenge yourselves. That's a whole lot of positivity in these times when we need it most. In this one, the only thing that I disagree with is that I think these guys do a uniquely great job in displaying their incredible skill in a very accessible and musical way. I wonder if you listened again a couple of times without being in your analytical frame of mind if you might think a little differently. If not, then that's still cool and still valid. I'd never say that you guys are wrong, and it's your different perspectives that is part of making what you do so cool.
Thanks again and keep them coming!
I do wish that you would revisit Aesop Rock sometime. You picked a pretty obscure song. I would recommend "dorks" instead where he criticizes the underground rap scene. I think you would find something more compelling with that one.
Thanks again!
HOLY SHIT THEY REACTED TO POLYPHIA. IVE NEVER CLICKED ON A A VIDEO SO FAST. Pls do more of this
"The worst" is alot more melodic. I would recommend that for first time listeners
This is melodic
@@rosspeterson2658 "more"
@@user-et4do4jm1q maybe you’re looking for the statement “more song like” both songs are equally melodic just in different ways
This is definitely the most "showcase of skill" song they have, so you got it there. I think it might be a slightly misleading telling of what the band is, or does as a whole. I really hope you check out some of their other songs to get the full vibe. And the music videos are actually better, I think, since it's more about a mood, or vibe, or aesthetic that the song is trying to convey.
Also consider that they don't do vocals. I think that the technical complexity of their playing isn't just showing off, but is really them trying to "speak" via their playing. It's the cadence of rap lyrics. It's the buildup before the bass drops. It's the layers of lead singer over the harmony of backing vocals. A pretty lofty goal.
I like it because the song can mean whatever I want it to mean, and I don't have to think about if I understand, or agree with the message that the artist is sending lyrically. I think it removes the concrete meaning of what a vocal line would be, while retaining the FEEL of a really powerfully sung chorus, or a really dope ass bar.
It's like how you can become more invested characters from an anime, because you aren't sitting there the whole time like "Yo, the dude playing The Hulk is the same dude who was a priest in that movie about pedophiles in the Catholic Church."
You guys would love “So Strange” by them. It’s also featuring a vocalist and has sentimental chords with this same complexity.
Polyphia approached this song as a trap groove where each musician takes a verse to freestyle/solo
I highly recommend checking out the song YAS from the same album, it features the two guitarists from Chon and the music video is equally as wild as the song
Definitely give "Champagne" "Crush" or "Euphoria" a review, they're far more approachable songs than this from their earlier albums.
Yeah good picks. I like the more complex songs but those threes are easier to get into on the first few listens
You guys need to listen to “Constance” by “Spiritbox”
Would love to see that! That song/video cuts so deep.
