It’s strange the way handle the camera. What is the reason behind ?

The viewfinder of the SL2 is very clear and natural looking, but sometimes in bright daylight it's necessary to shade the top of the camera to get a really clear look. I've found it necessary occasionally, and so has McCurry evidently. Until I acquired one this video was weird to me too.
What kind of stick does he hold the camera on? Does anyone have an idea what kind it is?
