  • Dive Watches and Suits - James Bond - feat TGV from The Urban Gentry
In this episode of Federico Talks Watches TGV and I discuss the topic of wearing dive watches with suits. Is it appropriate to wear a Rolex Submariner or an AP Royal Oak Diver with a suit. We also discuss wearing nato straps and rubber straps with a suit.
Also what dress watch would James Bond wear? JLC, FP Journe, Rolex, maybe an Omega?

Someone should do a nostalgia review of the Gruen Precision 510, the first watch worn by James Bond on screen!.. in fact theres your answer.. the Gruen precision was in fact a dress watch! So this in fact is the dress watch Bond would wear!

I totally understand all the points that you guys brought up. I think that in a traditional sense that dress watches are only allowed with a suite. However I personally have worn a diver in a suite. I think that the "classic" style and rule will always be only dress watches period. However I do think that a man who is fashionably knowledgeable and has great taste and class can pull of combinations of cloths and watches that one might not normally think of. Watches can be a great way to accent, accessorize and add color to an outfit. (They can really work well in a business casual or semi-business casual environment.) You still have to dress according the environment you'll be in though, i.e. if you are expected to wear a tie, three piece and only carry a leather briefcase, it is probably safe to say a Blue Squale 1521 is out.
Keep it up, loving the videos! I have finally bought my first 3 automatic watches in the past two days because of you and TGV. Cheers!

Hi Federico, nowadays only a few men go diving with their luxury dive watches. These watches became "dress divers". So, you can get away with wearing a Subby with a suit. But a Seamaster Ploprof would stretch it a bit too far for me! ;)
    Best regards,

You kind of eluded to where I stand on this issue at the end of the video. I simply do not wear a suit often enough to warrant the purchase of a proper dress watch at the moment given my love for sports watches. I currently wear my Seamaster 300 Master Co-Axial on those occasions, and I think it works well. The important thing IMO is each individual feeling comfortable with what they are wearing and wearing it with confidence. Like James Bond, the key to pulling it off is boldness.

I love getting these bits of gems and "old school" opinions from TGV but especially Fed. You both have different approaches due to your backgrounds but when you come together on the standards and practices of how certain watches should be worn, it is like enjoying a great movie or symphony for the first time. I always enjoy the content and believe it or not, yours and TGV's tips, opinions and little fun facts assist gents like me in my respective professional field.

  • @PerkasetPXPodcast

Honestly, it depends on the person, what they're wearing and the size of the watch on their wrist. NATO strap not ZULU with a linen or cotton suit isn't bad. As long as you're not wearing something super chunky with a rubber strap. The thinner the watch the better for formal wear. Also, a JLC Reverso was essentially a tool watch to play Polo in, from what I heard somewhere down the grapevine. Great Topic.

That question has already been answered. In the novels Bond wears a Rolex "Oyster Perpetual", which is the first Rolex Explorer. He wore a diver watch when on a mission like in Live and Let Die, but these were Q issued equipment. The watch that Bond would wear off duty would be the Explorer. Keep in mind in those days it was a utilitarian non luxury watch, so nowadays this would probably translate into a Seiko.

    • @Molach101
      @Molach101 5 років тому

To be fair; these watches were utilitarian, but still high-end utilitarian. In some ways you could compare the price of Rolex then to Tudor or any entry-level Swiss luxury sports watch now.

Up until about 10 years ago, the Rolex Sub was known as the "dealer's watch" in the City. Every currency trader worth his salt proudly wore his Sub with his Jermyn Street shirts and suits, and his Crockett and Jones brogues. I still proudly wear any number of dive watches with a suit.

A good thing to keep in mind is how fluid fashion is. (thank god, because I would look terrible in a tri-corner hat and a powdered wig.) Black-tie used to be considered semi-formal, now it's pretty much the standard for formal wear (I haven't seen anyone wear white-tie unironically for a really, really long time.)
Anyway, the people who first decided on the "no metal bracelets with suits"-rule are most likely all dead at this point, so it kinda' falls to the living to make the rules now. I'm sure in 100 years, people will be debating whether or not it's acceptable to wear your fission-powered, multicolored Z-shock with formal attire (which by then will probably be board-shorts and a polo shirt.)

Anything other than a dress watch with a suit for a formal occasion is a no no. Wearing one with a day time suit is acceptable on a metal bracelet. Wearing something on a nato or distressed leather bracelet etc is only acceptable with a linen or casual cloth suit.... This could look cool. For example Spectre when DC is wearing his casual suit in the desert with his Seamaster on a nato so cool!

This basically went nowhere but I like hearing these two talk watches. I thought we were going to hear about specific divers that work with suits or specific dressers that work with casual wear. I think the style is changing, now any type of nice watch for the most part can get away in a suit and you can wear an all black T shirt with jeans or khaki’s and a dress watch. It all depends on how you present yourself

I think it's an independent and cool fashion statement, especially on a rubber strap. Moreover, if you're wearing one that sticks out a bit, it's an awesome conversation piece. That said, the watch world is divided such that the people who notice either won't care whether or not it is acceptable in terms of fashion; they only care if it is expensive. The other crowd, being watch heads, will give you props for wearing a cool watch like a sub, a planet ocean, and AP too diver, a fifty fathoms, ect...

  • @gersonblanco9701
    @gersonblanco9701 8 років тому +2

I think it's acceptable nowadays for people who have an office job because it would be a "tool watch" for a suit you can bang around your desk, walk around the office and for the mandatory happy hour drinks but i would not use just any "diver watch". It's not the same wearing a Seiko Monster or a Seiko skx009 compared to a vintage Rolex Submariner or Omega Planet Ocean 42 as they are all divers, I would go for a more refined timepiece like Rolex or Omega mentioned above. Now you guys mentioned Black Tie parties where "office suits" are going to remain at home and a special attire is gonna be required, for these events i would propose another diver, if funds are unlimited, i would wear a Patek Nautilus Stainless Steel... Dreaming does not cost a thing.

Nice video with an interesting topic to discuss until the end of times. tastes change so dramatically but in my humble opinion the perfect dress watch should be thin, discrete but powerful. JLC Reverso; P.F Calatrava or a vintage Rolex on a leather strap. More affordable? Nomos; Eberhard & co; Oris Monk. When in doubt, wear nothing. Cheers Federico your orange strap is a killer.

It's definitely possible to pull off a divers/sports watch with a fashionable suit, or vice versa, a classy dress watch on a fun band or strap with sporty/casual wear if it's tastefully done ... And it can work especially well if the wearer has a strong personality and can "make it a style all their own." That being said, it's important to recognize that there are some occasions where it's important to be event-appropriate and stick to traditions. Whatever the case, I think it's great that we keep horology and people's interest in watch-wearing alive!

Fashion rules are contextual. They are also normative. In the U.S. the Rolex sub and the Bond seamster have transcended sports watch status and have become all occasion watches--in 99% of all circles and contexts they are appropriate and the norm! That said, my personal preference is suit goes with a leather banded dress watch (strap should match does and belt!!). Blazers and sport coats range from suit-like (a tailored navy blazer, for instance) to very casual (unlined tweed or cord material)--I try to match the dress-level of the outfit with the dress level of the watch. A navy blazer with flannel pants is messy enough for a dress watch but the sub or 300 is fine too. Linen and cotton summer suits and coats are fine with a nice diver on a nice nato as long as the strap doesn't clash with coat material.

Depends on the dive watch. Frankly, my rule is do what you want as long as you own the hell of it. But if you're wearing a seiko monster under a suit, yeah, in my opinion that's pretty tasteless. Really good point about how dress watches are overlooked because of people using a dive watch for all purposes. I'm definitely guilty of that.

You guys are awesome to listen to. Loving all your videos. Great variety of topics. As for my 2 cents worth I have to agree...NEVER a dress watch with shorts! That's just outright sacrilege. I have a friend who wears a sub with a suit and it looks great. You can definitely pull it off. Natos or Zulus with suits is also a definite no-no. As for rubber straps geez that's a hard one but in general I agree it's not befitting. There are some exceptions though....I would wear my Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Diver with rubber strap and titanium inserts with a suit. It's a very classy look. Another watch that can probably pull off being worn with a suit is my Chopard Mille Miglia GT XL Power Control with white dial and Dunlop tread tyre strap. May be a little large though. I agree. I think it depends if the guy is just a confident guy in general who has his act together, then whatever he wears will impress whoever sees him.

i will probably wear my tudor bbb, but best suit watches, not high luxury watch and not too show off: should be Seiko GS, Omega AT, Rolex OP.
    my 2 cents

If Bond was off to the opera for the evening, he'd wear a Cartier Tank.

I've done the Nato with a suit but to be fair I'm not doing the full formal look i.e. no tie and open collar. Actually landed a date as I was making my morning espresso in the office. So the ladies clearly don't have an issue with it!! If I was 3 piecing it up with a tie then Yes....classy dress with leather strap to compliment. No problem with anyone who wants to wear a diver with a suit.....

I agree, things are much more lax when you are going open collar...

If it's a Patek Aquanaut you can wear dinner suit or a suit or casual... It's one of the few watches that does it all.

+Sir John Hall I disagree, the aquanaut for me is strictly a sport watch. No dinner suit, no suit... Just my two cents...

I was raised on Connery's JB. I read all the books in high school. After reading Dell Deaton, I'm sold on the Explorer. It makes sense for Bond: it is a rugged sports watch that can pass for a dress watch. It's perfect for all occasions. Now, when I see Connery/whoever wearing a dive watch with a tux, it looks as inappropriate as if he were wearing swim fins with a tux. I'd LOVE a Rolex Explorer w/Seiko's rugged Spring Drive. I hope Rolex copies it after the patents expire.

Sometimes Tristano sits so motionless and with the same expression i think it's a cardboard cutout :P
I so hope it's a Junghans Meister moonphase!

Would wear a sub or seamaster 300m with a suit for business, work and leisure, but maybe a more dressier watch for gala and weddings and funerals

My father was raised in France and he has an obsession with dress watches. I'm not really into dress watches to much.

for me if you only have sports watches maybe you can with a suit. however personally it would have to be an upper tier one like an omega or Rolex. otherwise don't wear a watch with your suit. I wouldn't expect a Seiko diver with a suit like I wouldn't expect a gshock with one. black tie is dress watch or no watch period however.

Hello Federico & TGV ! Greetings from Romania
I currently own a AP Royal Oak Yellow Gold White Dial 39mm & an AP Royal Oak Offshore Rose Gold 42mm Rubberclad.I want to add an everyday sport watch but i want it to fit into my collection. My toughts are Platinum Daytona ( but i don t really like the brown on the dial ),116619 WG Submariner ( i think the blue is too blue),Submariner 116610 i love it but the brushed bracelet makes it too raw,GMT Batman (it looks kind of like a toy),and my favourite is Platinum Day Date 40 ( i really like this one but it isn t too sporty)
Overall I am considering a white coloured Rolex ( steel,wg,platinum ) to fit the collection.Preferably with a touch of baby blue.I would like to know what would you choose and what other ideas do you have. love your channel
    Thank you in advance,
    Andrei Orban

I'm pretty sure In the bond book Moonraker he said he gets paid 40 thousand a year, but on his missions he can spend as much as needed to complete the job. Also thanks for the content Federico and keep it up!

Late to the party but i think that part of the confusion here stems from the fact that most people now assume a suit is always formal, it’s not, for men concerned with style and in traditionally conservative industries it’s the one option.

Not sure if I would say its "right" or "wrong". But I think wearing a dive watch with a suit communicates certain things. For instance, if I see a guy wearing a black ceramic sub (or worse, a sea dweller) in the office with a suit, I tend to think they are a very much in to status and a bit careless (tacky may be a better word).
