Keep in mind veterinarians actually have very little training in their courses about nutrition. I had to take an extra 2 years in veterinary nutrition on top of my 4 year standard veterinary courses to be a board certified nutritionist. Vets and vet offices can become just as biased as anyone else because of the lack of education or because they have made a brand deal to recommend a certain brand like royal canin. Seek a nutritionist for your dietary needs is your safest bet.

It's something I have heard, and even something some of the vets I've worked with have admitted, but I felt a little uncomfortable stating it because there are so many on forums saying how they got a great overview in nutrition. So I just didn't want the controversy lol. Absolutely agreed though.

@@PawsofPrey my total unit time on nutrition was 3 weeks. I was livid because that is not what was outlined in the information packets before enrollment. I ended up taking a 2 year course after the fact. I then found my passion in native Albertain carnivores and omnivores. Bears, gray wolves, coyotes, lynx, wolverines, pine Martins and cougars. I took on zoology and am now working in the Wild Canada section of the Calgary zoo. I am responsible for all these animals nutrition and even in a zoo setting, veterinarians generally are not part of our nutrition team. We work with them but they are not above us.

My dog was going lame in both his back legs. The vet said he needed surgery and he wouldn’t be 100% even after the surgery. I didn’t want to put him through surgery. I started giving him fish oil and noticed an improvement. So, I stopped giving him dog food and started giving him salmon, sardines, steak, chicken….he stopped limping and started running and playing like nothing was ever wrong with him. He prefers his meat slightly cooked. That’s okay with me because he’s an only child now. ❤

Thanks, going to try that, mine has been limping for few months now, high vet bill got us nowhere so I bought joint supplements and recently fish oil. Still limping with the supplements but I see she starting to walk to the garden again to do her business, I was picking her up and carrying her just so she could get grass and sun...maybe its the fish oil. Also been giving her green powders, turmeric, collagen, bone broth, at least I don't see her getting worse. I'm here as the last resort, I want to try some raw food, even seared to test and see how that goes. She does not eat kibble, sometimes I mix a handful into her food.

@judy8301 raw diets do wonders if done correctly. They are not for the faint of heart. I spend 3 hours a week doing meal prep for 2 bullies. Remember based on weight %10-20 of there daily diet MUST contain organ meats. I rotate chicken lamb and beef livers, kidney and heart sometimes all of the above. Plus occasionally giblets and stomach if i can find it. Dont over use livers! Also your dogs must have calcium and fibre. I give each dog each meal x1 chicken neck or wing. Sometimes a raw or boiled egg with shell(shell is high in calcium) a couple times a week. For fibre i steam and puree pumkin, sweet potato and carrots 50-80 grams per meal . Plus i add an omega 3,6,9 suppliment oil every meal as well as a fish oil tablet and 30 grams of sardines in spring water(out of a can NOT THE SARDINES IN OIL) As a treat a tea spoon of cottage cheese and 3 slices of cucumber and 4-5 frozen blueberries. Maybe a big slice of apple watermelon or mango if im indulging my self. Use greens like broccoli, beans, peas and spinach if you can, my hate them otherwise i would use more. Finally to regulate there system i give a pre/pro biotic once sometime twice a week or occasionally spinkle in pysllium husk in the selected meat. If your dog is having joint problems look into green lipped mussles supplements. Green lipped mussles are very healthy for humans and pets alike. They also contain chondroitin which is good for joint health. If you can get your dog to ingest Tumeric thats a good way to go 2.
Natural raw diet with fish oils, green lipped mussels, Tumeric and a probiotic..... you will see a difference in a matter of days!
      GOOD LUCK!

Love this video. We've been feeding our 2 french bulldogs raw for 7 years. Vet wasn't thrilled at first, believing kibble was as nutritionally complete as anything needed to be. At the time we were really struggling with GI and allergy issues with our dogs. After a discussion with the guy who sold us the commercial pet food, HE actually recommended we try raw, and I discussed with Vet. I told vet we'd start with a pre-proportioned (proper allocations of bone, muscle, organ), then grind own with very careful calculations. We agreed to do annual blood tests to make sure things remained in balance. I used many references from canine nutritionists. End result? Vet says our dogs are healthier than any of her other patients. Blood results are perfect. Allergies and GI issues gone. Most recent conversation with our vet had HER asking ME for the sources for our dogs' raw diets so that she could help her clients!. At the same time we are in agreement that if people do it wrong, it could be catastrophic. I hope more vets take on the education of pet nutrition so that they can help their clients' pets live longer & healthier lives.

Yes but wild cats have a much shorter life expectancy. Of course you could argue that they most likely die from other reasons but it could also be they dont live long enough to know the risk of raw food diet.

    • @teddy2979
      @teddy2979 4 роки тому +69

Wild cats die sooner because of a) predation; b) man-made causes (cars, poisons) and d) age-related--inability to hunt; and e) killed by prey/ same specie/different specie competitor. If raw diet was a problem, no wild predator will be left alive from the beginning. Cats, especially, were not domesticated to eat corn, soy, brown rice etc. in barns. You let a cat out and majority of them will hunt, domesticated enough. Kibble on the other hand and improperly made cooked food, has killed and caused so much more related problems from organ and metabolic issues.

      @teddy2979 4 роки тому +31

@@vc7417 Hi, AC...cat biology and human biology are different. Cats are classified (and dogs) as carnivores by Smithsonian institute Taxonomists and ethologists (people who actually do this for a living). It is a scientific fact. Cats and dogs have not "evolved" to eat processed food (although dogs can survive more on it than cats longer). We have change to morphology of cats and dogs for sure, but not their DNA, dentition, digestive tracts. The parasite scare is what many people who are not aware to discourage raw. Yes, there are parasites/pathogens in raw food, but dogs and cats, unless they are immunocompromised, which need special handling, have the enzymes in their mouths and the right acidic levels in their guts to deal with them, along with a healthy immune system. The National Research Council, which pet food companies based their self-funded studies on, will tell you head on that dogs and cats even need ZERO carbs to survive. The fact that many non-meat diets have to be cooked in order for their nutrients to be unlocked says a lot as it is. If truly raw was dangerous for carnivores, we would have seen mass extinctions of carnivores; the same goes for herbivores if we fed them cooked "grass, etc." No animal in this planet eat cooked food except humans because we are so far removed from nature, and we indeed have evolved to eat more processed and cooked food. Believe it or not, for Sushi, for example, it is healthier for you raw because the nutrients are not destroyed b cooking, BUT unfortunately human intervention in the oceans (mercury, pollution etc. makes it a problem). For cats and dogs, as with processed kibble, you have to obviously watch out for sourcing. If one does not know how to feed raw properly and handle them, I would not recommend them either.

When I was fostering 6 kittens and their mom, I went to the vet and asked them what to feed the little kittens after they weened off, I was given a suggestion of kitten specific canned food, I of course picked it up. I was giving mom some raw fish and raw chicken and one day I noticed that she grabbed a whole piece and took it to the kittens herself, I was amused so I followed. She brought the raw fish to her kittens and they just all jumped on it, biting into it as if they never ate before, It was too adorable, they even growled at each other. Please be very careful and considerate with using a raw diet on cats. They require certain amino acids and vitamins in their diet that dogs do not, if you give a cat the same raw diet as a dog it will die! (goes for dog kibbles as well, never feed a cat kibble food meant for dogs). I´m not saying its not possible to feed cats a raw diet, but its very hard und requires a lot of research. There are other bacteria and toxins harbored in raw food aside from salmonella that cannot be killed via freezing only heat. I’ve seen multiple pets sick from bacterial toxins related to raw diets and a patient that actually died from it. It’s not always an issue when you have a healthy dog but if you have an immunocompromised pet or one with underlying disease you’re unaware of, that’s when illness can occur. Commercial dry diets are coated as well as the packaging they come in. They have a shelf life before they begin to collect any bacteria or lose nutrition and once opened and stored in a cool dark place they have a life of about 3 months. I’m not advocating one over the other just pointing out some info/pros and cons.

My dog's not on a raw diet, but homemade cooked food.
I only grill the meat on the sides, leaving it basically raw inside. I give him bones and organs too, mainly liver, heart and kidneys. We don't give him chicken or eggs because he's allergic to poultry; plus we give him Omega 4 supplements. Fish is too expensive where I live.
We also give him Greek yogurt sometimes, and vegetables.
All of this, paired with a portion of rice and potatoes.
Our vets were also against BARF, and even raw bones, now I know why! We had to switch to a homemade diet because kibble just didn't work for us, we changed brands 4-5 times, and each time my dog had digestive and intestinal issues. He was lethargic most times and meal times were almost torture for him.
Now he licks the bowl and he's always excited for the next meal, he's more energetic and his fur is brighter and softer, his stool is firm.
He wasn't being pickky, anyway. A few days after we introduced him to homemade food, he was eager to eat kibble; in fact, he loved it and wanted more, but then he had tummy issues again and that's when we asked our vet for blood tests because I was suspecting that my dog was not being picky, he was being sick because of kibbles! My suspicions were soon confirmed, so we never switched back to commercial food, although yes, it is more convenient on all aspects.

@Zoran Grlic Okay, Zoran, I will give you this. There's no mass study that vets are consciously trying to poison pets with kibble for the sake of business, but do please consider the following:
      a) Majority of vets get very LITTLE nutrition training, and as much as 80% of are sponsored by Pet Food companies, with the science being backed by self-funded, not 3rd party tested studies. The only thing pet food companies have proven is that pets can survive, not thrive, on kibble, that's it. They are in the same corner as raw feeders. Now this does not mean the average Joe knows more about the average vet, of course. b) the NRC, where AAFCO bases it's "science" concludes need ZERO - ZERO - carbs to survive. This alone should SAY a lot on the biological needs of dog; c) dogs are classified as carnivores by Taxonomists (if a vet says otherwise, go tell them to argue with Smithsonian Institute that study this for a living; and d) majority of the longest living dogs in the planet (go to Thomas Sandberg's Longest Living Dog Research Project are almost all raw fed. Yes, there are other factors that contribute to longetivity from genetics, products used on them, supplementation, etc., but if you really want to learn about kibble in general no one else will know better about the scrupulous practices of the kibble industry more than Pet consumer advocate Susan Thixon who has dealt with Pet Food companies, AAFCO and the FDA. Now, if someone does not know how to raw feed, then they are definitely better off to feed the highest quality kibble. and there are some dry food that is better than others; freeze dried being superior to any kibble, and more animal, minimally processed better than the rest. I will ignore the fact that you compared me to a conspiracy theorist if you can forgive me for makin a general assumption about all vets (although I have met some that sell dog food in their stores ---clear conflict of interest in my opinion but that's another story. I have been researching raw food for the last 20 years, thank you. Yes, many are anectdotal, but I can tell you for a fact that kibble and dry food has killed FAR MORE than raw diets for pets. It does not even compare. Raw feeding needs people to be educated about a balanced diet but you know what, so do pet owners who blindly trust kibble companies or just because "their vet recommended itl"

A few years back I fostered a litter of kittens who were abandoned by a feral mom. They were about a week old when I got them home. They were malnourished and ill, especially the runt. The vet loaded me up with KMR but the kittens just weren't thriving on it and the runt was near death. I did some research and tried raw goat milk. The kittens began eating regularly. When they were about four weeks I began incorporating Radcat and Stella and Chewies. They all THRIVED on the raw diet (since they had a feral mother it stands to reason that raw; aka mice etc, made up their nutrition in utero) and the runt, whom the vet told me was surely going to die, made it. I couldn't part with her, and she's a beautiful five-year-old cat now who has really thrived on a raw diet. I worked with a nutritionist to make sure that her meals are balanced because YES that IS important. I highly recommend raw as it has also helped my dog who had CHRONIC allergies when I adopted her and I transitioned her to raw. BUT work with someone who has done the research and can guide you to make sure you are fulfilling your pet's nutritional needs. If I hadn't given raw a chance starting with the goat milk, I don't know if the litter would have made it, especially my little Rue.

I just experienced this yesterday! I informed my vet that my 11 year old GSD was switched to a raw diet that consisted of; ground beef, beef
liver, chicken hearts, chicken feet, raw eggs with the shell, mackerel, plain kefir, blueberries, dulse granules and a turmeric/sweet potato paste. She straight up told me that I am probably going to kill my dog with bacteria and a lack of macro nutrients. I told her that I spend the time with a scale measuring out exactly each ingredient so that she’s getting everything she needs, and she didn’t want to hear it. Told me that kibble was the best choice and gave me a bunch of literature to prove that processed kibble was better than grade A meats and ingredients for human consumption. I was so shocked

My grandmother cooked for her dogs, always. Every meal consisted of rice and a veg with whatever meat was the star of the show, all simmered in the same pot. Her last dog, before she passed at 97 yrs old herself, lived until he was 19yrs old. I think there are multiple ways of feeding your dogs a nutritionally sound meal, none better than the other if that animal is in a loving home. Raw or cooked, Whole Foods will always be superior to processed packaged foods in the right balance. But if an owner doesn’t have the time to take to deep dive into thoroughly educating themselves, then dry dog food is a perfectly acceptable alternative. A fed dog in a loving home is far better off than those in a shelter without a home, even if they’re being fed processed packaged foods.
Just know that this is merely a come back, a raw diet is by no means *new* like you’ve stated. Might be new to this generation but it’s certainly not new in the truest sense of the word. Quite literally, people have been doing this for hundreds if not thousands of years.

When I told my holistic vet about wanting to feed my puppy a raw diet, he warned me about potentially feeding an unbalanced diet. Shortly after, I came across videos by Dr. Karen Becker and her recipes for a well balanced diet. Dogs need a protein rich, moisture rich diet to thrive. For example: 2 lb ground beef, 1.5 lb ground chicken wings, 1 oz beef liver, 1 oz spinach, 1 oz sweet peppers, 1 oz blueberries, .5 tsp basil and .5 tsp ginger. Sometimes he eats better than I do. There are commercial raw diets in certain pet food stores. Prior to feeding my puppy raw diet, I was so confused on what to give him and switched about 4 times through different brands (Purina, Authority (PetSmart brand), and 2 other AAFCO vet approved brands I can't remember the names. My puppy's breath smelled strangely sweet, he was developing dry flaky skin, and was frequently having some issues with constipation. One day when going to a non big commercial pet store, I saw this funny little dog that looked like a monkey with beautiful fur and bright eyes. The girl behind the counter told me she was on the raw food diet. I decided to try it, but w/caution. I gave my puppy first Primal, then we landed on Instict Raw puppy. The change in my puppies overall well being was very dramatic. His eyes are bright, his skin and fur are soft and no longer flaky, and he doesn't have trouble with constipation anymore. Every time we take him to the vet for check ups they say he is a healthy boy.
I was told by a holistic vet nutritionist that all dogs are different and that if my puppy was doing well on it to continue it with incorporating different proteins.
I am just speaking from my own experience as a pet owner. I am happy with the raw fresh food diet.

As someone working in a clinic, the biggest question I have about raw diets is this: do raw diets help manage chronic health problems in pets?
The vast majority of the kibble and canned foods we have are designed for managing health problems such as GI sensitivity, diabetes, urinary issues, and kidney support. My clinic works with cats primarily, so I've seen a number of blocked cats recover from crystals with supportive care and a urinary diet designed to break down the crystals. That being said, I'm curious as to whether a raw diet could accomplish the same since many blocked cats become blocked from eating bad kibbles like Friskies.

Hi! I do go over this in other videos, but yes it not only facilitates certain health issues (for instance, UTD - because of the high moisture content, cats are less likely to develop urinary crystals. Their body is no longer in a constant state of acute dehydration, and their urine is less concentrated.) But, it helps prevent certain health issues from even occuring (for instance, kidney disease) if you're interested, these are the videos I go over this: ua-cam.com/video/pMaqrkFlxOs/v-deo.html | ua-cam.com/video/WLOLmqRWcWs/v-deo.html | ua-cam.com/video/U8sb0KkSqxE/v-deo.html

"Your vet is not your enemy" cannot be emphasized enough. Veterinarians are NOT "bought out by big kibble"! Unfortunately, many are still relying on old nutrition wisdom and the field of nutrition (both for humans and animals) is a fluid field with changing information. It's not because your vet is out to get an extra buck from kibble makers, it's because they lean on tried and true sources of food. There are a lot, though, who no longer recommend dry food. It's soooo easy for owners to jump to thinking they know best, whether it's giving burger and eggshells to a dog or giving human painkillers to their cat. Rely on and trust your vets some more!

He's never had kidney stones, cancer, tumors, nor has he lost any teeth and is the old age of 15 years and getting close to the rainbow bridge.
The vets say it's a miracle that he never got any troubles until much older where now arthritis and chronic kidney disease are kicking in.
His chronic kidney disease progresses, but I think the old boy will go on his own time and not to the disease.
And what's the main ingredient of the kibble the vet recommended? CORN...for a cat with kidney troubles.
He's been fed for almost all those 15 years on a raw diet, I've no doubt it helped him get this far.
He can no longer eat raw meat as he can't push it through, and so I've had no choice but to switch to a canned food and what happened to those beautiful white teeth almost immediately, the same ones the vets admired and said was amazing and looked like a 2 year old cat's teeth? They started getting plaque on them and yellowing.
I'm proud my boy will go out on his terms, no matter how much the ache of loss will hit us as he was a very good cat and helpful to us in many ways, I'm glad we helped him to do this the way he helped us in his own ways.

I dare say, a lot depends of how reliably one can get fresh, good quality meat and offal in their area. Wasn't a problem when I lived in larger cities with good meat markets in Latvia, have had unpleasant surprizes when buying human food intended raw meat in UK . Also, vets probably encounter enough people who simply are too careless to do raw feeding properly, and that might skew their opinion against raw feeding for the average pet and owner.

We have 4 dogs. An older dog and puppies that have been with us since they were born. The little girl started to get stomach problems at about 4 months old. We changed food but her problems didn’t clear up. So I decided to try a “raw” diet. While it’s a little more expensive it totally cleared up her stomach issues. The other awesome thing that happened was our 12 year old dog now runs around like a puppy! He can actually play with his children now and he doesn’t cry anymore because his hips are hurting. That was really terrible. We would go to move him and he scared me he cried so hard. ALL better now. I know super long story but I also had my mom change my grandmas 15 year old chihuahua over too. The dog actually eats all his meals now and he plays! He NEVER played before, not with other animals or humans. He was overweight and he has a wicked bad skin itchy thing going on. He would hide under things and use them to scratch his back. All that was cleared up by the month mark. Please just make sure your following recipes that make sure their daily requirements are met. I give all my dogs a daily supplement with their food to make sure since three of them are puppies and the older dog also gets a turmeric type pill too as extra help for his joints.

Purina, Royal Canine etc...are all big/main name brands, most big super markets sell these brands especially Purina. Cheap too, so it sells to millions of customers hence more fillers to satisfy the demand. You can buy soy, corn, grain etc free food they are just more expensive and more commonly found in pet stores only and not your local wal mart. We feed our kittens a combination of wet and dry food and neither contain the ingredients that are damaging to cats. After recommendations and research we decided on Hills Science Diet, as much hate as that brand may also get, all brands get hate. Hill's have had a recall a few years back, in fact was quite a big one, but it has had the least amount of recalls out of most named brands. By no means am I denying or excusing the recall though. Hill's also has options of a diet or ingredients that suit your needs. We almost went with other brands like Blue Buffalo, but questioned the fact it is sold just about everywhere. I can buy Blue Buffalo at a main grocery food chain I work at, but once it is sold on every shelf, things like the content of fillers go up to make it cheaper to be able to sell at places like Meijer, Wal Mart etc. It can happen too. A pet food that was once sold in pet stores only has had seen it's ingredients change when going to a big box store. I assume because once that brand gets carried on the big shelves, the demand goes up tremendously, hence more production.
The biggest problem with cats is kidney failure and bladder infections etc. I am shocked no one has mentioned this in any of these comments. What makes cats prone to kidney failure is not dry food alone, it is actually more the Ash content and fillers in big name brands. Hill's had the least amount of ash content and same with lack of fillers. That is what made our decision. Both my husband and I have had cats that died too young or not even too young, but from horrible kidney failure and infections. So when I researched this time around on what to feed our new kittens was what causes the kidney failure and massive common problem in cats health.
Something else people will roll their eyes at is animal biproducts.....Um in the wild animals eat most of the animal. Bi-products just mean other ingredients from the animal than the actual meat. Ingredients are yes important, but I think the most important to watch out for is corn fillers, ash content etc.
We are considering a raw food diet, but need to do plenty of more research before making the switch because we want to do it the right way.
There are name brands that are safe for both cats and dogs, you just need to do the equal amount of research as you would with a raw diet. What attracted me to hills was the low ash content, less fillers and the amount of research they actually do put into their food. They may do some of the most research than most brands I know or from what I saw. Maybe I am wrong. Every brand gets hate, you just need to do the research for yourself and do what is best for you and your animal/animals. My vet suggested Fancy Feast kitten food, Purina One kitten chow....After researching I decided that was not the best choice and I could find something more suiting for my cat's needs.

I feed my animals taste of the wild They are healthier than ever And many actually ask if they are on a raw diet and I laugh. But I'd rather feed my Dogs good kibble than risk my family getting a possibility deadly Parasite virus bacteria etc. Especially with some people being immunocompromised that could mean death for them a human life is way more important than a dog eating raw imo. 80 percent of raw meat has Bacteria in it it's just a matter of time before you your pet or someone you love gets very sick from that. Even cooking the food would be way healthier for them don't see why so many want raw my guess that It's a trend. And my pets love kibble it's not like your dog cares about taste they don't have tate like we do.

What people fail to realize about veterinary and medical (and nutritional, etc) degrees is that the curriculum for those programs are heavily influenced by corporations with a financial interest in what these students/graduates are taught. If you go to medical school (at least here in the United States) your curriculum was essentially bought by Big Pharma, which is why no matter what the ailment, you're taught to prescribe a *patented product* to "treat" (not treat, just hide the symptoms of) the disease. Dog food manufacturers do the same thing. It's also why I get harassed to update my dog's vaccines every year. How can there be "no evidence" that the raw food diet is good for dogs (or humans) when that's what was eaten for thousands of years? Give me a break. They mean there's no "bought" evidence. It costs money to do studies and trials. Corporations with deep pockets are incentivized to pay for those kibble studies. Who's got millions to pay for raw-food studies? And who would stand to gain from that? You can't patent what's natural. You can't patient "chickens." But once you GMO sometime, that's where the money's at. When a vet (or doctor or nutritionist) tells you something that intuitively doesn't make sense, it's because they were brainwashed into thinking their degree means they're experts on a topic instead of being an expert on what someone / some corporation with deep pockets wants them to know.

Kinda disappointed it wasn't brought up that there are companies that make pre prepared and balanced raw diets that are available in a lot of pet stores an online. A few that come to mind are Primal, Stella & Chewy, Instinct, Lotus, Steve's, Answers, etc. All of these diets meet AAFCO standards, which are the exact same nutrition standards that all kibble meets. Not to mention as far as bacteria concerns go many of these raw companies test every batch that they produce at a 3rd party lab for salmonella and e coli after everything is flash or pressure cooked to kill bacteria (I know for sure Primal does this, I'm fairly certain Stella's does as well.)
Its unfortunate that its not common knowledge Purina, Hills, and Royal Canin sponsor vet clinics and vets nutrition training. Especially after the irresponsible DCM study that was released unfinished and scarred so many people out of feeding a much higher quality kibble and their vet shoving Pro Plan down their throat instead.

If pets had no kibbles to eat 100 yrs ago what were they eating back then? Cats and dogs are carnivores they couldn't live on by just eat bread and rice. We recently lost our dog of ten years. He had cancer and we question our decisions on nutrition. He would have a burger if we had fast food. We wouldn't read ingredients on treats. I was only a kid, and so many people here did it at the time. We didn't think twice. It was also 2011 so we didn't have much information. I found this very informative. We are getting a new pup in a year and a half, so we are doing lots of research of what would be the best option for this dog. We will be doing kibble since it's what we can afford. But I'm considering getting supplements and vitamins. Adding nutritious things into the kibble so make sure they're getting everything they need. Koda was only ten and was a healthy dog, he should have lived longer. He was out for walks every day, very loved, had good hygiene and was a good boy. We want to do things differently this time. ❤

So the discussion is about raw vs kibble, but why not cook the food to remove contamination? Is it too much effort? I mean, beef and chicken are mostly fine because they have no nasty parasites, but fish and pork do, and dogs are every bit as susceptible as people. And for another thing, while the dogs are equipped to handle salmonella, people aren't, and when they eat raw, their mouth gets the bacteria, which can then spread to any surface they sniff or lick.

Wild animals eat fresh meat that they kill themselves. You are buying meat at a grocery store that has been sitting around for a week growing bacterial cultures. Cook that stuff first. I really enjoyed this video! I’m a vet tech and I think all the points you covered are exactly why vets don’t like recommending raw diets. 2 things I would emphasize is that with food safety, salmonella and e. coli can live in pets mouths for weeks at a time and not harm them BUT can harm YOU, so if you feed raw it’s not a good idea to let them kiss your mouth or lick children hands! Also a lot of people who feed raw are usually against grains b/c they think wolves (dogs and wolves are TWO different species but people don’t care) don’t eat grains but in reality when wolves eat an animal they also eat the stomach, which has grains in it! Also there’s new research showing that a grain free diet can cause cardiomyopathy (a heart condition) so be careful! If you fed raw please PLEASE make sure it actually has all the nutrients, I know someone that only feeds their dog ground turkey and sweet potatoes 😭😭

Vets are against them because they’re really easy to mess up. For the average dog owner honestly kibble is just a safer option. A vet honestly shouldn’t be recommending raw to someone they believe will mess it up and cause harm to their animal, so I’m glad most vets don’t recommend it. If you can do it correctly, fine, but don’t get mad at vets when most of the time they’re just recommending the safest option for the average pet owner. Also people talk bad about vets until their animal has to go in for an emergency. You want food advice, go to a nutritionalist and do your own research. If you’re feeding raw and your dog is showing health issues and your vet recommends a diet change, they went to school, they have had some amount of nutrition training, not an amount compared to a nutritionist but still training, they aren’t your enemy.
