  • Vhagar, known as the Queen of All Dragons, is the dragon who was ridden by Visenya Targaryen during the War of Conquest. Although during this time she was the smallest of the trio that included Balerion and Meraxes, Vhagar was still large enough to swallow a horse whole, and her flames could melt armor. A hundred years later, during the reign of Viserys I Targaryen, she is the largest of all known living dragons and the last remaining dragon from the days of Aegon's conquest.

    Ironic that in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, King Ghidorah (a gigantic three-headed dragon) was unleashed by a character played by Charles Dance, who played Tywin Lannister, who helped to bring down the Targaryen dynasty (whose symbol is a three-headed dragon).

      I saw someone explain that in 3D model stations like blender it is possible to see the dimensions of a 3D object, and the special effects artist might have been speaking from memory as to the longest measurement of Vhagar, as how "long" she was. Well, the longest metric for the 3D model in the program, if it displays size like Blender, would have been the wingspan and not nose to tail.

      @@drexasaurus3788 No, to you it means nose to tail, to others it can just mean the longest way to measure an object. If her program doesn't show the size of the 3D object then she is just eyeballing it and that would mean she didn't even measure it anyway and just said "150 m long" to mean "really big". Offhand, her art station probably did show the metrics of the dragon, and the longest metric would have been wingspan.

    The dragons of "A Song of Ice and Fire" are lucky to live 300 years while the dragons of every other franchise mentioned are essentially immortal as long as they aren't killed in combat....
    Also should be noted that several of the "dragons" aren't even considered dragons in standard fantasy settings (technically "A Song of Ice and Fire" dragons are closer to wyverns than dragons but at least they have wings as opposed to the wyrms in this list)

      It does indeed seem like the "dragons" in GoT are much closer in terms of evolution to true dragons, perhaps they haven’t been separated that long in terms of evolution, allowing them to still reach immense sizes as well as still possessing the ability to breathe fire? Something to think on, for sure.

      In Middle earth, there is no distinction between drakes, wyverns, wyrms, etc... They're all dragons, creations of Morgoth. Thus Smaug is a dragon by his world's standard, where ours don't apply.
      The Buraki shouldn't even be here because it's not even considered as a dragon by his own settings : he's a snake that wants to BECOME a dragon, and is never once in the movie refered to as such.
      Orochi is a dragon of our world's legends but an oriental one, he is what japanese believed dragons looked like and has thus been described as such. Using our own "western classification" on it is pointless, him having wings or not doesn't matter.
      Stop trying to project your own views of the matter to decide whether something is a dragon or not. All these imaginary creatures come from very different locations with very different beliefs and cultures, it's not our place to decide if they're right or wrong.
      Use the references that led to the birth of these creatures as a classification, not your own.

      @danieldickson8591 Рік тому +1

      Well, Tolkien's writings did make a distinction between "cold drakes," dragons that don't breathe fire; true fire-breathing but wingless dragons like Glaurung; and the winged dragons such as Ancalagon and Smaug, the last and most terrible of Morgoth's creations.

    • @danieldickson8591
      @danieldickson8591 Рік тому +2

      There's been a tendency in movies and television of this millennium to depict dragons as quadrupeds rather than hexapeds, i.e. having two legs instead of four, in addition to their wings. These dragons ambulate on all fours in the manner of bats. From an evolutionary standpoint that's more consistent with real Earthly organisms. The dragons from the film Reign of Fire, Ghidorah from Legendary Pictures' Godzilla franchise, as well as the Game of Thrones dragons, all fit that model.

      Balerion is said to have died of "old age", but there is still the fact that he was chained in the Dragonpit for 40 years after he got beaten up on his trip back to Valyria in 54 AC... If he were to be left living freely, he would live far longer and gotten much bigger (a dragon never stops growing, as long as he is free). There was no universal distinction in European mythologies. The only historical distinction was made by 17th century coat of arms dragon categories in Britain. It was not universal. The word "dragon" comes from the word "drakon" in Latin, and simply means "big snake". Hasbro doesn't have any authority on what an Author or Artist is allowed to call a dragon. Sure Vhagar fits the wyvern dragon type, by having two legs, but you don't have the authority to tell GRRM that his dragons aren't dragons. The term dragon is historically very broad and vague, and there wasn't ever a universal taxon based on leg count.

      As far as European Dragon lore is concerned, yes. But in general fantasy lore, if it's called a dragon, it is a dragon, legs and wings do not matter in general fantasy. Glarung, the first Dragon in middle Earth did not have wings, it was ground based but still called a dragon.
