- The last rider of Balerion was Prince Viserys Targaryen, who entered the Dragonpit to claim the dragon in 93 AC.
Balerion had finally stopped growing, he had grown sluggish and heavy and was difficult to rouse. When Viserys claimed the dragon that year, the dragon struggled to take to the air.
They flew around King's Landing three times. Viserys believed the dragon no longer had the strength to fly from King's Landing to Dragonstone.
Balerion died in 94 AC, less than a year after Viserys claimed him as his mount, he was two hundred years old when he died.

I actually really love how you can feel the weight of Balerion. You can tell its a struggle for him to fly and it takes it all out of him once he lands.
I always thought dragons had hydrogen bladders to use as air ballast as well as hydrogen in their bones. My personal theory nothing official…

It was symbolic that Viserys was the last dragonrider of the Balerion and the doom of its dynasty.
Maybe Balerion dying after he claimed the dragon was symbolic of what was to come.

He came back bleeding with a massive nine foot gash on his body and her…. holy fuck, her death was so gruesome. She was burning up and had like fire parasites under her skin that were cooking her alive. Maesters put her in ice water and they all jumped out of her skin and died. It’s a mystery what they actually encountered in the ruins of Valyria but whatever it was… it was giving Balerion the hands. Most likely a firewyrm or a rogue dragon or something
What I like the most here is how it gives real perspective to Balerion's size. His skull seems to have the same size as we see in the show. Yet I would not imagine this absolutely gigantic beast from the skull alone. It really does not give the perspective of how big he truly was.
This is just incredible, the last flight of the last dragon to see Valyria in its glory.

He was once choose a little girl.... just like Vhagar . It seems even the biggest , toughest war veteran dragons needed soft love sometimes

Viserys was only a teen when he claimed him so they'd have to cast someone else. It's funny that Aemond does basically the same thing (claiming the biggest dragon)but he got lucky with a healthy one 😂

Despite being old & slow, him taking one last flight with Viserys riding him was like Vizzy's crowning moment which made most Lords of the realm choose him to be the heir.

Nah, most lords chose him because he was the male claimant. Jaehearys too wanted him, though sadly he was never raised to be king. he was too gullible with no pride of Targaryens. Nobles in feudal system will vote for you when they think they can control you.
Plus his opponent was 7 yr old Laenor who had the Velaryon name rather than Targaryen.
No, they choose him because he has an Xy chromosome. Nothing to do with a dying dragon.

You know what the sad thing is, it probably took all his remaining strength to fly like that, and remember as he flying over kings landing lets not forget he reason that city is even there his mark on history is legendary, rest in peace king of dragons.

Balerion burning the dragon keepers is a nice touch. Could possibly be the thing Viserys refers to from his only experience as a dragonrider when he later says "The idea that we control the dragons is an illusion"..

I read that Balerion died a year after being claimed by Viserys, but here he seems to kick the bucket barely a minute after landing. 😢
Well, yes. We know he does soon after so I like that the artist just had him go right after… we only 5 mins for the animation 🥴😆
Viserys actually planned to fly Balerion to Dragonstone, but he didn’t think he’d make the journey, so he flew him around King’s Landing instead.
He doesn't kick the bucket here, he's just very tired. He was already very old prior to being claimed by Viserys, but what really caught him was having flown Princess Aerea all the way to Valyria and back, and the injuries he sustained there. After that, Balerion never flew for more than a few minutes.

Balerion was very old, sick at that time and have fought many battles. Everyone wanted The Black Dread. He just wanted to rest and live out his days in peace

Also spot on with the flight cycle by the way you really feel the struggle for him to stay airborne but also the strength it takes to move his massive body. F for those dragonkeepees tho guess even with his old age Grandpa still got em

@@momoftm2116 Vhagar. A good chunk of the community nicknamed her Nanna or Granny Vhagar cause well, she simply looks like a very old cranky woman 😅. Sometimes in her old age she forgets that the 7 kingdoms aren't currently at war with Dorne or the fact that Visenya is dead.

I just wish House of the Dragon could've given us this. Seeing the Black Dread flying around King's Landing is the most spectacular thing ever. Even more than when Aemond claimed Vhagar. One last flight before his death.
Georgie did want House of the Dragon to start during the reign of King Jaeherys, which meant we could've seen a teenage Viserys claim Balerion.

@@OzanaDivine and once again like GoT, GRRM was kicked off his own show (HotD). There's a reason why HotD Seaon 1 felt like early GoT because Georgie was heavily involved. The Boar Hunt episode from season 1 was a GRRM passion project.
This is the reason the Great Council of 101 chose Viserys to succeed Jaeharys!
He was descended from the male line of Aegon the Conqueror and was the last rider of Balerion.
This makes me want to play an open world rpg as Aegon the conqueror so bad. Imagine being able to play through the events of the conquest and to fly Balerion from kings landing to the wall

Hey this idea popped in my head, but imagine if Balerion's first appearance scene has him flying around with Aegon to Dragonstone with this soundtrack; foreshadowing the future dynasty, followed by Rheanys on Meraxes and Visenya on Vhagar.
It could be used as an introduction to Aegon and his sister/wives.
This is dope man,,, if this happens in the Tv screen imma burst out off happiness!!! Finally getting to see our boi Balerion and Meraxes and Vhagar on their prime😢
I'd write it differently... How about Visenya and Rhaenys fighting/racing playfully but competitively atop their dragons, and at some point starting to wait around wearily, boringly, nonchalantly, for their slower brother... And we see the bigger, slower Balerion then.

This is honestly a gorgeous thing you've created, the scenery with King's Landing at sunset to the intricate details of Balerion, Viserys, and the buildings. You can see the weight taking effect on his flight yet still maintaining smoothness. I would love to play a game of this or even just fly around with old Balerion around King's Landing as well as another couple dragons from the franchise. Well done. Absolutely beautiful. Please do Syrxax and Rhaenyra.
This is godly. The weight behind Balerion's movements, the scenery, the lightning, the music, the setting, the sun in the orizon. I do really hope that this game comes to be a reality.
I love how Balerion's design here seems to be mostly based on a more elderly Drogon with Vhagar's saggy neck and tattered wings. It's kind of a bummer how he was already dead when GOT took place, and then we ended up with a prequel and he was still dead in this one 😔
Also it's interesting how he seemed to die of exhaustion after his first and only flight with Viserys.
They're planning another series that will show the Conquest. Alexander the Great, but with Dragons!

😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 Omg, this is my favorite piece of music, the Targaryen dragon riding theme. The composer is a legend for this. It brings tears to my eyes every time and you animated this perfectly. How sad that the mighty dragon had his last ride. It kinda looks like the Dragontwin game which I can't wait for.

I am glad to know that Balerion did not die alone. It is good that Viserys was with him in his last minutes. Who better than a great human being, with a noble heart like Viserys, to accompany him. A Targaryen king was at the side of the king of the air at the time of his death. And after his death, Viserys even made him a beautiful monument.

We all loved GoT to a huge degree for the dragons, and we love House of the Dragons to a huge degree for the dragons. It was such a bad idea to kill two of them, wtf? They should just simply reboot GoT Seasons 7 and 8 after House of the Dragons. Especially now when they make links to the White Walkers (Aegons Dream, Cregan Stark) and Daenerys (the eggs as "Our future")
We deserve the Comeback of the Targaryen Dynasty with Daenerys as the Queen who does what Rheanys and Rhaenyra could not do: Be the first female Targaryen on the Iron Throne. Daenerys will always be my queen and D+D should be sent to the wall for their treason on her and the entire fandom!

BTW, do you have an accurate length and wingspan estimate for this exact Balerion model??? Just to compare it to HoTD's Vhagar, who is said to be 73-76 metres long (240-250 feet in freedom units) with a wingspan twice that. I ask you before the only downside I can find in this magnificent design is that I don't see it much bigger than that, as it should be given that Vhagar died while being literally “almost as big as Balerion during the Conquest”, so old Balerion should be considerably bigger than old Vhagar
Viserys not claiming another dragon after Balerion´s death shows how unfit he was for the throne. He tried to be peaceful, but became too soft. The consequences of his wrong decisions were deadly for the house of the dragon.
I believe Targaryen’s can only claim one dragon in their lifetime, so viserys would not have been able to claim another dragon.

@@baron6588 Well, in TSOAIF Quentyn asks her (Daenerys) if she means to ride her dragons, and she answers "one of them". She then explains that while many dragons have had more than one rider over time, no rider has ridden more than one dragon.
That Daenerys instinctively knows that she can only ride one (Drogon) suggests that riding another of her children would lead to Joffrey's fate (like falling off Syrax because she felt uncomfortable).
I love this! Looks like a video game…and that should TOTALLY be a thing. Please, somebody make it a thing where we can explore the entire map just a dragon!

It was always my dream to see Balerion the black dread in GOT world. It is great animation that makes us see balerion but he was considered so huge that his wingspan covered the whole city so here size isn’t that big in animation.
This is something we need in games at least when dragons are involved, it feels real and they should feel real.

when the books said "balerion flew around kingslanding several rounds" i did not imagine him to fly so well and elegant. but your animation makes it feels like balerion is still well for his name, and until he lands we realised he's diminished by age and trip with aerea.

God if HBO had patience we could've had a fire and blood anthology series and seen scenes like this. Could've been like the tv show The Crown. Granted we wouldn't be seeing Dance of the Dragons story arc begin for maybe 5 or 6 seasons but it would be worth it!

I wouldn't be surprised if dragons lived longer when Valyria was at its peak. The Targaryens didn't exactly do much to maintain their dragons and impeded their growth with the dragonpit.

Let´s remember that caging the dragons in the Dragonpit diminished their power and longevity, and his escapade to Valyria with Aerea Targaryen seemed too much for the Black Dread. he never truly recovered for whatever creature attacked him in the ruins of the Freehold. He came back, but was never the same

I know that Balerion has a big wound from when he went back to Valyria but imagine if Viserys trained him back to where he once was. Ohhhhh how things could've been if Viserys still had Balerion...
