Ancalagon is on entirely different level than those small drakes from Game of Thrones series. Ancalagon is easily a Titan size level, when it spread its wings apart... It covers the sun and sky in darkness. That's how truly massive Ancalagon is. It's like Ghidorah but on super steroids.
Let's not forget that the 3 peaks of Thangorodrim were taller than Mt. Everest, so the fact that Ancalagon crushed them while dying shows how much of a different level of dragon he was
Only a few fictional dragons are bigger, though when one of them's the size of multiple galaxies... well let's just be glad THAT dragon is enslaved like a genie.
Yeah that's not Kaiju size. I see vhagar as Kaiju size. Smaller than full size Kaiju but she's definitely so large that's it's really hard to judge her size. Its just so fucking big
Ancalagon was a different monster entirely. Monstrously powerful and highly intelligent. Smaug is much smaller than Ancalagon so wrap your head around that.
As much as I love Balerion, Ancalagon is not just your typical dragon. He is intelligent not the I know who my master is kind of way, but intelligent like capable of rationalizing and strategizing. He was a powerhouse in the war at Arda and was able to drive back the forces of the Valars. Ballerion was more like a bully, burning down mere mortals. Not that he is weak, he killed another dragon but that is nowhere near fight the Valars and a flock of Great Eagles.
Well to be fair all the dragons in J. R. R. Tolkien's books and shows are a lot more then the animal like dragons in George R. R. Martin's books and shows.
@@TheOther644 exactly. BUT, not all LoTR dragons are more powerful that ASoIF dragons. When it comes to Ancalagon though, I doubt even 3 Balerions could beat him. It's his massive size and intellect combined.
I think your chart at the end underrepresented Ancalagon. Pretty sure the others could play quite comfortably on the top of his head without bothering him.
So let the battle begin with balerion say's google balerion can killed ancalagon , balerion is the strongest, biggest and the prime of meraxes and vhagar the two giant dragon.no one can kill the balerion and it didn't die in fighting it die because of his old age
@@she_ryl1919 not a chance in hell. Balerion was large and powerful yes, but Ancalagon was so large he was more like a force of nature than a dragon. How can you fight a hurricane that causes tornados and lightning storms in its wake?
Remember, when Tolkien says that Morgoth let evil spirits enter into creatures, such as dragons, what he really means is Maia. Maybe not as powerful as Sauron or Gothmog, but in the case of Ancalacon the Black, very close to Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs. So, unlike Game of Thrones, Tolkien's dragons have divine beings in them. You are not talking about a large powerful magical beast, but a large powerful beast with an extremely powerful evil demigod. Balerion the Black Dread would soil himself when confronted by Ancalagon the Black.
Just a small note, it's not that clear that it's always Mayar he is talking about in these cases, I'd actually argue that it's only in some cases that can be reasonably inferred. Take the barrow wights for an example, which are created when the Witch King sent evil spirits to inhabit the corpses in the Barrow Downs. I'd say its hard to argue that those evil spirits are Mayar, both due to the power of the wights and because Nazgûl are not on the same powerlevel as Mayar and it would thus be weird if the Nazgûl could command them. On another, I'm not sure if Tolkien actually describes Dragons as being inhabited by evil spirits, at least not in the Silmarillion. I know he does when it comes to werewolves for example (which is most probably Mayar in that case), but as I understood it Morgoth just infused dragons with a part of his magic. If I'm wrong I'd be very grateful if you could tell me where Tolkien wrote about it!
@@adrianhultman6236 However, it is not clear how it can be any other way. It clearly says in The Silmarillion that Morgoth cannot create living things of his own. There are several points where he imprisons 'unclean spirits' but does not say much more. Clearly Morgoth cannot create spirits, and anything he puts his power into would not be animated unless he put his mind to them. (See of Aule and the dwarves.) The only other place he may be able to get them is from men or orcs, the latter his corruption of elves. This may be possible if he has the power to withhold those spirits from their normal process. (Going beyond the world or to Mandos .) Clearly the dragons are way too powerful for the spirits of men. Now, could they be the spirits of orcs given some of Morgoth's power to enhance them? Yes, but I feel it is a stretch. I think it clear that the Ainur come in a spectrum of power and some are just weenies but still useful. They might be so weak compared to Sauron, Balrogs, Ungoliant, etc., that they are only thought of as spirits. Regardless, I still think Ancalagon the Black would eat Balerion for a snack.
@@jakealter5504 Tolkien made it clear that Morgoth created his creatures, including dragons, in this way. What we are discussing here is where he got the spirits that inhabit them. This he does not always make clear is where these sprits came from. Based on his extant text the only source would be very, very minor Ainur.
Ancalagon and his host were able to push back the host of the valar, an army made up of Noldor, vanyar, maia and some valar. Even if he wasnt the size we think he was he would still stomp every army in asoiaf combined along with their dragons. He literally put gods and archangels on the back foot.... There is also divine magic in middle earths dragons, even if a maia spirit was not embodying them, they were still infused with Melkors power, making them far more potent in power than asoiaf dragons.

Drogon is much smaller in the books. In the shows, it was just a creative decision to make him big that won't amount to anything imo, he'd still be smaller than Balerion.
@@perce1veALL I could probably get behind this. Drogon is definitely capable of growing, but even at the upper limit i'd say around Vhagar max size. Generally dragons in westeros/targaryen dragon's have been getting smaller and smaller. The Last Dragon in the books is small, mutated, and weak. Ancalagon is just a whole different beast altogether
@@servantofthe99 True, I think Balerion being huge may actually berelated to the fact that he was the last dragon to be born in Valyria. Only Meraxes and Vhagar, and to an extent Vermithor and Cannibale even came closer to his size after the Targareyens moved from Valyria to Dragonstone. I feel that Balerion was from a different species (Comparing Dragons to dogs, maybe Balerion was like a Great Dane species, naturally bigger). Also, since most of the dragons died during the doom, Balerion literally had no other dragons to fear and there was plenty of food. So, little competiton, with a lot of natural food sources meant that he could not only grow bigger, but also be a lot more larger than any living dragon - possibly explains why the future dragons never reached the size. They either had inferior genetics, spent too much time chained up or simply never lived long enough.
@@aswinastro Sorry, new to lore. I saw somewhere that Cannibal is larger than even Balerion, him being a free dragon entirely having not spent any time enclosed. Is that true? Or is Balerion just the end all-be all of asoiaf dragons.

@@rayray9865 this is taken from The Atlas of Middle-earth. Not written by Tolkien and is an estimate done by looking at artwork and calculating his size compared to Bilbo. In letter 27 however Tolkien says that Bilbo is 'enormously too large' in that artwork. Its mentioned in the video that it's not canonical. No size is given for smaug other than that he could just fit the tip of his nose in a passage wide enough for 3 people and 5ft tall. People endlessly say the book says smaug is 58 to 59ft. No it dosent the Atlas of middle earth not written by Tolkien does and the artwork used to estimate this is specifically spoken about by Tolkien in his letter as showing bilbo as way too big and therefore the estimate for smaug was far too small.
No it is .. they confirmed that they made Balerion’s skull bigger for HOTD & it’s different angles . Kyburn told Cersei that the skull belonged to Balerion .
@@Pimpmobil117 I know it was said, but the head in HOTD is clearly bigger, so one of the skulls isn't balerion, my bet is the one shown in got isn't balerion
All the dragons of Middle-Earth are superior to those of A Song of Ice and Fire for a really simple reason. They were all sentient. No dragon in ASOIAF or its legendarium have demonstrated intelligence greater than that of any other animal.
Ancalagon is on another level he is maybe 15-20 times larger than Smaug. He was the size of a mountain and one crumbled under him when he died. He could have taken on all of game of thrones dragons and won easily.
@@frederikl.1642 the evidence that he's quite bigger is in the silmarillion where it says he crushed the peaks of thangorodrim beneath him. Thangorodrirm were massive mountains of slag piled up over the near millenia of morgoths war against the world. These mountains were easily bigger than everest, and ancalagon crushed these mountains, plural, to the grouns
@@calebbrown419 That says literally nothing about his actual size. The peaks of Thangorodrim "were broken in his ruin" can mean anything from "after his death, the Valar were able to destroy Thangorodrim" to "a magic cataclysm/earthquake brought down the peaks". There's precedent for the latter interpretation as the death of a 12-foot tall first age demigod caused the foot of a mountain to collapse. Did he crush it all under his body weight? No, obviously not. People can't just talk out their asses about Ancalagon being "15, 20, 150, 200 gazillion times larger than Smaug" based on literally no tangible information at all and then pretend that the Ancalagon fanart they found on Google images is even remotely close to fact.
Mate, intelligence only goes so far. No human would ever be able to take on a silverback gorilla despite the fact that humans are more intelligent. Besides, all dragons in LOTR are highly intelligent. Ancalagon is more intelligent than Smaug and more importantly he's 100x the size
Technically also more powerfull, what pepole seem to forget is that smaug is not an animal like got dragons. He is a magical creature. Size matters little in that case. Smaug himself being so durable his scales can only really be demaged by the black arrow. Which is not like bolts from got, there is a bit more complexity to it all. Overall, smaug is about as big as balerion, but smaug outshines balerion in both the aspect of power, Intelligence, and durability.
The thing is also, Smaug was an *actual* dragon. 4 legs and wings. A dragon like that could *easily* destroy Balerion even if it was slightly smaller than the black dread, those claws will rip him to shreds.
At least this video mentions that the estimate of 58ft by Karen Wynn Fonstand is not canonical. Every single time there is a discussion of Smaug someone says 'the books say hes 58/59ft.' No they dont. A book not even written by Tolkien, written 8 years after he died, says it. We know its flat out wrong and much too small anyway because she took this size estimate by comparing Bilbo to Smaug in a piece of artwork. In letter 27 Tolkien actually talks about this same piece of artwork and how Bilbo is 'enormously too large' in it which would make her estimate for Smaug enormously too small. It's not canonical and never has been. Not only is it not canonical because Tolkien didnt write it but even when he was alive talks about the artwork saying Bilbo is too big to the point that he says 'Enormously' so. So all we can say for certain is, we dont know exactly how big Smaug is but we do know it's a lot more that 58ft
So the Thangorodrim were each 35,000 ft tall. Comparatively larger than Everest. Everest takes up 12 square miles at the base, so the Thangorodrim should be at least that at the base. Add to that they are spaced out, and Ankalagon outclasses anything in Game of Thrones, the Monsterverse, and Cloverfield. Estimate: 20 miles long at minimum, 35-40 miles at Maximum.
Tolkien's dragons are such fundamentally different types of beings compared to Martin's dragons. Martins dragons, while having personalities, are more akin to giant flying, flame-breathing war-horses.. Tolkien's dragons, along with generally being larger, are most importantly, scheming, extremely intelligent war _generals_. They were independent-minded, clever and manipulative and could play the long game strategically. Glaurung, despite not being able to fly, was massive, like a giant, armored fire-breathing worm-shaped tank the size of a FedEx warehouse - and yet was probably most destructive due to his intelligence and the damage he wrought through mind games. And Tolkien's dragons were all essentially invulnerable to anything except the most exceptional of weapons used in very particular ways.
Ancalagon the Black was a different class of dragon. He forced the armies of gods- and the gods themselves- to retreat, then crushed three mountains into dust when they finally managed to kill him. Comparing most, if not all fantasy dragons to Ancalagon was like comparing a hummingbird chick to an eagle.

Let's hear it from the King himself, then: "Then, seeing that his hosts were overthrown and his power dispersed, Morgoth (a God) quailed, and he dared not come forth himself. But he loosed upon his foes the last desperate assault that he had prepared, and out of the pits beneath Angband (a mountain, and also Morgoth's fortress) there issued forth the winged dragons, that had not before been seen; and so sudden and ruinous was the onset of that dreadful fleet that the hosts of the Valar (Gods) were driven back, for the coming of the dragons was heralded with with great thunder, and lightning, and a tempest of fire. But Eärendil came, shining with white flame, and about Vingliot were there gathered all the Great Birds of the heavens and Thorondor was their captain, and there they did battle in the air for all of the day and through a dark night of doubt. Before the rising of the sun Eärendil slew Ancalagon the Black, the mightiest of the dragon-host, and cast him from the sky; and he fell upon the peaks of Thangorodrim (a mountain about three times the size of Everest), and it was broken in his ruin. Then the sun rose, and the host of the Valar prevailed, and well-nigh all the dragons were destroyed; and all of the pits of Morgoth were broken and unroofed, and the might of the Valar descended into the deeps of the earth. There Morgoth stood at last at bay, and yet unvaliant. He fled into the deepest of his mines and sued for peace and pardon; but his feet were hewn from under him, and he was hurled upon his face. Then he was bound with the chain Angainor which he had worn aforetime, and his iron crown they beat into a collar for his neck, and his head was bowed down upon his knees. And the two Silmarils which remained to Morgoth were taken from his crown, and they shone unsullied beneath the sky; and Eönwë (an archangel serving Manwë, one of the Aratar, which are the eight most powerful of the Valar) took them, and guarded them. Thus an end was made of the power of Angband in the North, and the evil realm was brought to naught; and out of the deep prisons a multitude of slaves came forth beyond all hope into the light of day, and they looked upon a world that was changed. For so great was the fury of those adversaries that the northern regions of the western world were rent asunder, and the sea roared in through many chasms, and there was confusion and great tumult; and the rivers perished or found new paths, and the valleys were upheaved and the hills and mountains trod down; and Sirion was no more. Edited for spelling.
Easiest way to solve this; Smaug is bigger than Balerion, by a bit, as said by George himself. Smaug, is the smallest Tolkein dragon, by a sizable margin. We don’t know if Balerion is considerable by Valyrian Freehold standards. He could be the norm. He could be big. He could be small. We just don’t know. So the answer is probably, ASOIAF dragons are on the smaller scale of dragons, when compared to the LotR and other materials by Tolkein.
For games of thrones, you can’t forget that dragons became the size of cats. There were many theories why this happened but magic was a huge part of it. The dragons can’t become large without certain factors unlike tolkien.
Smaug was very intelligent and able to speak. He was almost indestructable. GOT dragons are cool, but they're arent indestruble. Kinda goes with the theme of GOT. Everyone is killable in GOT. Smaug was magical, he's much more than a big animal with wings.
Drogon was far bigger onscreen than he was in the books. Pretty sure Smaug was smaller than you've made him too, Vhagar size at most. As for Ancalagon, ''and he fell upon the towers of Thangorodrim, and they were broken in his ruin''. Broken, NOT crushed, and the Balrog was ''cast down and his body broke the mountain-side as it fell''. No one suggests that the Balrog was as big as the mountain he broke, I think many people overestimate Ancalagon's size. He was enormous, don't get me wrong, but not as big as 3 massive volcanoes put together!
Middle Earth had far bigger dragons. Ancalagon was so immeasurable that it could dwarf old Valyria, let alone its dragons. Remember, they were created by a god.
Tolkien's Dragons could speak. They were not just "animals" that followed a master like a dog (like in GOT and HOTD). They had wisdom and cleverness, and the gift of speech. Plus Ancalagon was described to have had colossal wings, and can do devastating aerial attacks, and while the dragons of ASOIAF are dangerous only in their world, they cannot compare to most other fantasy dragons, most especially, Ancalagon, who is arguably bigger and is an actual dragon. Balerion, based on description, is a wyvern. Ancalagon is the size of a mountain! To defeat him, a group of eagles and the intervention of Eärendil and his flying ship, and the Valar were needed. So, there's no contest. Tolkien's dragons would win, hands down

The thing is that asoiaf tries to be somewhat realistic (not in terms of existing creatures but in terms of warfare and human behavior) while while Tolkiens world is basicly an absurd fary tale and much higher fantasy. You can't make a mountain sized highly inteligent demon dragon fight normal humans, it would absolutly destroy everything in asoiaf without competition so it wouldn't work in it. Not that he is weak, he killed another dragon but that is nowhere near fight the Valars and a flock of Great Eagles.

@@argonianaccount1876 says google even if ancalagon is big strong still balerion win
(See of Aule and the dwarves.)
The only other place he may be able to get them is from men or orcs, the latter his corruption of elves.
@@vladimpaler3498you’re forgetting that morgoth could have created the dragons in the same way that he created the orcs, by corrupting other creatures

We need to get gendy tartakovsky to do a dragon show. No dialog, just emotion. He could make a good story out of it.
Ancalagon was 35,000 feet and bigger than the biggest mountains and it’s wing span would probably have crushes countries.

Let's hear it from the King himself, then:
"Then, seeing that his hosts were overthrown and his power dispersed, Morgoth (a God) quailed, and he dared not come forth himself.

The sword Turin used to slay Glaurung slays anything that it hits so it would be useless as a way to measure a creature's size.
For some reason i just like How ASOIAF and GOT depicts dragons more than LOTR, dont hate me for that.

Ummm Smaug is colossal to the GOT dragons..
Ancalagon crushed a mountain range when he fell. So he was massive. GOT dragons are mice to him.
There’s the cannibal too
Middle Earth had far bigger dragons. Ancalagon was so immeasurable that it could dwarf old Valyria, let alone its dragons. Remember, they were created by a god.
Anacagon broke mountains when he fell - no contest
vhagar was as large as Balerion at the time of conquest, Blaerion grew from then
Tolkien's Dragons could speak.
Tolkien's dragons would win, hands down
you have not heard of the Cannibal Balerion was as big as cannbial's one wing and there were dragons far bigger than Balerion in valyria Teerax a dragon of house baleryes of vlayria Balerion is as big as Teerax one leg so i think if we are going to compare middle earth biggest dragons we should also compare Game of thrones world biggest dragons and balerion isn't the biggest one and smaug is much much smaller than balerion idk where didi you get that estimation
Still not as big as ancalagon, when he fell from the sky he crushed 3 mountain peaks
@@jamessmith-db2is and Smaug destroyed lake town from his fall and Smaug is obviously not as big as lake town, Ancalagon destroyed 3 mountain peaks because of the impact not because of his size
@@continentalextinction smaug didn't destroy lake town with his fall though did he, he probably crush 1/4 of it, his fire destroyed most of it, ancalagon did take out 3 mountain peaks though, while it never states how big the mountains were ancalagon was ridiculously massive, also the cannibal is never stated to be bigger than balerion it also definitely never states balerion was as big as one of the cannibals wings also there's next to know description of old valeriyan dragons especially teerax, fact is middle earth dragons made GoT look tiny
There is no Dragon bigger or as big as Ancalagon in valyria.
Ancalagon the black is not juste a big ass dragon but it is also very intelligent. He leads the other dragons in combat like a general leads his army in combat.
When he fly he bring a dustructive weather with him.
Smaug and Balerion are around the same size.
Smaug can sleep in Ancalagon the blacks mouth so big is Ancalagon
Ancalagon does not need to eat, drink... Thy have a life span so long that no one can say if thy can ever die by age.
Where do u find/ use the graphs and charts and drawings out the dragons/dragon riders from the hotd history?!?!
Balerion was brought to Westeros by Aenar Targaryen, not Aegon. Still, beautiful video
The smallest dragon of the west is bigger than the biggest dragon in game of thrones 💀
Vhagar was nearly the size of balerions size during the conwuest menaing he grew for an extra 100 years(chagar is 400-500ft) balerions estimates are at 1000ft-700ft
it is said when ancalagon fell, every topographical map needed to be altered
Bro, ANCALAOGN IS A Living Planet
Even Earth Godzilla is small size to him
Ancalagon dwarfed the 3 highest peaks of middle earth
Balerion was Biger then Veygar when he Died, but...Veygar lived longer. Up to the Dance of Dragons so she outgown him.
Thus Veygar was Biger. But...ther is also a Canibal Dragon in the Boks and he might by the Bigest of all GoT Dragons.
All of them are about the size of Smaug.
Non can stand a chanse to Ancalagon.
Not a close comparison.
According to the producers, Vhagar is 150m long
U should noticed two legged with wings are all wyverns suppose to be little bit smaller and true dragon come with 4 legged and big wings is the big ones, different type of species.
Lets bring in the dragons from the HTTYD franchise as well.
If Balerion could swallow a Mamoth whole, then Ancalagon could swallow a dragon whole
The thing is that asoiaf tries to be somewhat realistic (not in terms of existing creatures but in terms of warfare and human behavior) while while Tolkiens world is basicly an absurd fary tale and much higher fantasy. The creatures in it are way more powerfull but they fight way more powefull enemys so that it's kind of balanced. You can't make a mountain sized highly inteligent demon dragon fight normal humans, it would absolutly destroy everything in asoiaf without competition so it wouldn't work in it. But if you have a world filled with gods fighting each other it works so Tolkiens dragons have to be way bigger and more powerfull
Imma still say that the elder scrolls dragons are even above Ancalagon. Might be smaller but holy shit dragons who are literally immortal unless killed by another of their kind and they can just alter space and time with their voice.
Smaug was bigger than any dragon in GoT, and he would not even made a snack for Ancalagon. Probably smaller than a single tooth. If Ancalagon existed in GoT, whomever rode it would need no armies, would rule the entire world by the strength of the dragon itself, with no hope of defeating it. Ancalagon would probably be stronger than their gods.
Ive come to learn that even if theyre wrong lotr fans will insist until their dying day that their franchise beats everything and everyone at everything that ever was.
Ancalagon was said to be as big as a mountain balerion was a behemoth of a dragon he could swallow a mammoth in one bite but ancalagon could swallow the entire of dragon stone he was a monster
Your scale says Ancalagon was 1000 feet in size but isn't 1km actually 1000 meters?
Yeh he got the size wrong,Ancalagon was called the mountain dragon for a reason
He was bigger that three peaks of thonodrin
the total space between those peaks was 35 miles.........so ancalgon was not even a dragon, it was pretty much a flying disaster
If earendil and manhwes eagles did not kill him, it would have shattered the middle earth in half
@@ibrahimsurti4922 if Ancalagon was that big the air pressure generated from the beating of its wings would deafen people and cause large scale disasters.
@@wazowski97 it’s likely what happened since most of beleriand got sunk after the war of wrath
Dragon is GOT are a sub species of real dragons in most fantasies why, moat dragon in GOT typically lived up to 200 year's before dying, a typical fantasy trope lifespan for Wyvern's.
Real Dragon's like Wyvern's could also breath fire but unlike real dragons which aren't limited to 1 element. Fantasy dragon are heavily associated with magic to there core and there lifespan could typically reach a thousand years or couple of thousands of years. Dragon in most lores have 4 limbs and 1 to multiple pairs of wings, while wyverns have 2 hind limbs and 2 frontal wing/limbs.
