How to update Reolink NVR Firmware (PC App, Web UI & Direct)

In this video I walk through the steps to update the firmware on the Reolink Network Video Recorder, model RLN8-410-E. I’ll show how it’s done through the various user interfaces.
As you probably saw on my channel, this is a 4K system with 8 ports where I can connect and power up to 8 security cameras. This is a security camera system in a box and I have already reviewed its features, demonstrated the initial setup and configuration of the NVR and lastly installed the cameras outside.
1. The first step is to verify your NVR model number, hardware version and your current firmware. This is important because installing the wrong firmware on your system can damage it. Even if you think you know your model, do look it up. I show where this information is located in the mobile app, pc reolink client, web user interface and on the device itself.
2. Now that we have the NVR’s model number and current firmware, let’s download the latest version. Yes, we need to download the firmware from Reolink and then upload it to the NVR. I wish there was a simple upgrade button that would find the latest version of the firmware and automatically download it and install it for me. For now, we have to figure that out ourselves. To find additional NVR models, including mine, Reolink has those under Support - Support Center. Click the Firmware and User Manual Download link. To see all the firmware updates, click on show more. The layout here is terrible and has no order or organization. The easiest way to find your hardware is by opening the find feature and pasting in your model number.
3. With the file downloaded, I’ll go ahead and save it to a folder on my PC’s desktop. I’ll open the zip and copy the firmware PAK file. I’ll put a copy here, at the same level as the zip so I don’t have to dig for it later. I’ll also put a copy on a USB stick so I can drop it onto the NVR directly when demonstrating how to upgrade from the NVR itself.
4. Next, I show exactly how to upload the file to the NVR using each user interface. When selecting the firmware upgrade file, there is a check box for Update Config File, resets the NVR back to defaults. It’s not intuitive and don’t select this unless you want to lose all your settings and then possibly your mind since it probably took you a while to get everything setup to this point. After the upgrade is complete, I show how to verify the update was successful.
I’d like to see this process more streamlined in the future where the system regularly checks for updates automatically. I also think the wording “Update Configuration File” is very misleading especially since it resets the system back to factory defaults. I hope this information helps you find your firmware updates and also helps with the steps to get it installed successfully. Hey! Yes, I actually reviewed a couple dash cams about 5 years ago and they did not perform well on my channel so I deleted the content. I do have anyone to review but it's sitting on a shelf with about 20 other products to be reviewed.
EXCELLENT Video!! Sometimes the Reolink documentation is not that great and this video was extremely well done. Especially covering the Chrome cache issue. Also covering the update config version check box gotcha. Great Job!

I've been binge watching your videos. You are the absolute best!!! You've inspired me, I'm starting my Reolink NVR and a pair of 12mp cameras setup soon. I would like to incorporate a PTZ camera with the best auto tracking available. Could you please give me a suggestion since Reolink hasn't gotten into the tracking game yet. Blimey, what a faf. I am waiting for my new system to arrive as I type. If I had seen this prior to ordering it it would have been a factor whether to buy or not. Why on earth is it so difficult. Why can't the system update automatically? All it needs in the initial set-up is a tick box to update auto or not. Not looking forward to carrying out the update if it is needed when I start it up.
Come on Reolink make it easier.
I think reolink should link to your videos! I appreciate showing each management method. There was practically no instructions with the NVR. For what it's worth I think the 3x version of the firmware does update automatically. I have Model RLN16-410 Firmware v3.0.0.123_21031206. There is now an (Upgrade Device > ) option on the Device info screen for the NVR.

Is there an option to save the nvr system settings to a file like in routers and then restore the saved settings after updating? I personally like to reset anyway after an update and then restore my settings.
Why would they have a check box set so you could lose all of your settings?
Maybe if you are selling your system, or if you bought this as a used system, or even want to reset everything back to defaults in case the firmware has new features and you want to explore them from scratch.
Can you show how to upgrade the PoE cameras' firmware? My NRV client app/web does not show the info of the camera and does not provide an option to upgrade the camera's firmware
Question: Do I need a 4K monitor to take advantage of the 4K camera's resolution? Because my NVR's display setting is set to either 2160 when hooked to the 4K monitor or to 1080 when connected to the 1080 monitor, while all the 4K cameras recording settings are at their max. 2160 but when I compared the two different monitors, I got the same clarity (reading text at the same distance) with both 1080 and 4K monitors! Called tech. support but I did not receive much help. Why use a 4K monitor then?
Hi, could you possible add a video on how to setup NVR that has single network port and not 16CH POE. Setup diagram thought network POE switch and internet router...eg: NVR then switch 16 POE and internet router or NVR, Internet Router then Switch! As setup sometime it has heavy lag.

Nice guide :) I have pretty much the same system/setup as in your video, but do have a question regarding upgrade of the camera firmware (FW). As I have the cameras plugged directly into the NVR, I cannot seem to access their web interfaces by IP address to upgrade FW, so I'm looking at the NVR web & PC client interfaces. As far as I can tell, it's only possible to upgrade camera FW directly on the NVR (which for me means dragging a monitor, keyboard, mouse and USB under my stairs every time xD). I'm hoping I've missed something.
Did you find solution? I have same problem.
@@tomekhekin914 Unfortunately not, although I haven't really been actively looking a solution lately. Maybe a more recent NVR FW release has enabled Camera FW update on the Web interface? 🤞🤞 (Not holding my breath though 😅)

Im not a shark into computers, thats why i nevet got my self into upgrading my NVR.. mabye now that you have made this step by step instruktion.
Can i ask what you get from the new firmware compared with the old ?
It depends on which version you currently have. For each new firmware version, Reolink will provide a list of release features in their firmware links, but that only shows what's new in comparison to their previous release. I got a question for you regarding Reolink, if you're using POE hub to connect all the cameras, does it matter if you buy 8 port or 16 port NVR?
Great question. When using a PoE switch with an 8-port NVR, you can still only add 8 cameras. There are only 8 camera/channel placeholders in the firmware.
How would you setup a wireless reolink camera with this nvr?
You have to connect it directly to the router firstly, then setup the wifi connection in the app

D you have any issues using Reolink cameras and Blue Iris? - Some say Reolink cameras don't work well with Blue Iris, specially at night due to the images become blurry or ghost like.
Yes, I get some blur and choppiness with higher MP cameras. I have a 12MP camera where the daytime footage gets a little choppy in sections and a few frames might be missed. At night, I don't get any ghosting however.
Do you know the difference between 410 and 410-E?

I think the "E" model supports 4k and the model without the "E" doesn't.
@@HomeTechDIY it’s not the 4K compatibility. I have the regular 410 and it supports my 4K cameras just fine. It was included with the package of 4 820A cameras that I purchased. I’m sure many would like to see a video about upgrading the firmware of the cameras. I may do one myself as I didn’t even know it was an option until recently.
i have version 3 firmware on same box. There is now an auto update directly in NVR.

small update on this, there was a new v firmware update from a few days ago. that would not autointall. i had to do it manually once i saw the link on website, downloaded it, put it on stick and load from there.

The -E version don't seem to have any recent updates. It seems to be replaced by the non -E version. More info: support.reolink.com/hc/en-us/articles/900000602543-Hardware-Version-of-Reolink-NVRs
The latest firmware of the RLC8-410-E (H3MB16) is v2.0.0.274. You can download it here:

It seems that Reolink has removed the option "Firmware and User Manual Download" from the Support page.
Any idea or suggestion about how to get previous versions of firmware?
I just noticed that too. You may need to contact Reolink support to see how to get those older versions.

I'm currently trying to connect a 3rd party 30x zoom 8MP PTZ to my 16ch Reolink NVR. I've spent about $4K with Reolink on 16 8MP Cameras & several PTZ Cameras & they're wiping their hands of it & offering ZERO Tech Support! What a disaster!
What exactly are they refusing to help with? The third party camera on their system? What is the issue you're having with the device? Maybe I (or someone on here) can lend a hand.
@@HomeTechDIY basically everything, all they've said is to make sure it's Onvif 2.1 & RTSP compliant. I had to set the camera to h.264 to be able to even view it in the Reolink NVR & the only info that comes up in the Camera settings in the reolink nvr it says it's D1 @20fps with no PTZ controls

@HomeTechDIY well I downloaded the new firewall update on a USB 3.0 and it doesn't show up on my NVR when I plug it up...do I need to get a USB 2.0 instead?
I think the USB 3 should be ok. Can you confirm that this is the file on have on the root on your USB drive: IPC_523128M8MP.989_22051908.RLC-811A.IMX415.8MP.AF.REOLINK.pak?

That should work. Just make sure you are using the above mentioned file.

Yes, Reolink has made some changes to their website. The firmware can be found here: reolink.com/download-center/
Select the PoE IP Cameras & NVRs tab and then scroll down to the firmware for the NVR at the bottom.

What model NVR do you have? What is the firmware file name on the root of the USB drive you are trying to install?
@@HomeTechDIY Reached out to Reolink, and issue resolved. For some reason firmware for the 823A has to be install via USB directly plugged into the NVR. Thank you for your videos.
@@HomeTechDIY Thanks for the reply. I have the REOLINK 4K PoE NVR 8 RLN8-410. The firmware I am trying to install is NT98312_NVR_8IP_REOLINK_L300_148_21100909.pak. Error says file not valid. I also have the RLC-823A that is running the latest firmware but Auto Tracking (person and vehicle), and Auto Spotlight not functioning. Sensitivity of these features are set to max. Frustrating!

It depends on what you are using it for and where. As an entry-level surveillance system in a home or small business, Reolink would be a good choice.
