As a camera salesman installer over 10 years experience on commercial systems. I can say this video MUST WATCH for anybody who is new and shopping for the cameras system. He gives a lot of good information here and explains it well.
Career IT person but new to security systems. Not only do you do a fantastic job of breaking down the subject into easily understandable pieces, but I really like that you list your related videos in the description, making it easy for us to find the next thing we should watch. Excellent work!
Another EXCELLENT video! So much helpful information! There is so much to consider when upgrading our systems, your insights are key in making informed decisions! I will be in touch with you soon about updating our system!
I live in a town house i have been two doorbell cameras, front door and back door. I've been used by ADT SECURITY SYSTEM. There cameras both have went offline and I can't find out how to get them back on line. Can I replace ADT SECURITY FOR ANOTHER COMPANY. I'M AT MY WHITS IN. THEY WANT TO BE PAID FOR BROKEN EQUIPMENT. WHAT CAN I DO.
Just fired/got fired by Arlo so was researching upgrades and found you. I am a Contractor of over 40 years and hands down this is the best breakdown of a technical subject for homeowners I have seen. Security is your field, but a salesman like you is worth a million a year to a guy like me.
I asked friend how he set up his camera, he said there are a lot videos on UA-cam. I watched quite a few, for someone who has no knowledge at all, your video take me out of the cloud. Thank you.
Hello and thank you I have Epilepsy, and I need to have two cameras in my office to catch my Seizures. You are the one person that gives great information. God Bless you and your family.
Being a CCTV technician for a little over a year. This video is very much helpful! I learned so much because one day I will be installing cameras as my own business and this video showing you the ends and out was very great! Thank you so much for showing this!
Nice checklist, great advice! We love our ReoLink (Trackmix model) and doorbell cameras, so I'm happy to see them featured. A few additional tips on them: - NVR not needed as long as it's wired or wi-fi is close by. Each camera has it's own web server & notification center. - Has some great auto-tracking features. Returning to home-spot, virtual tracking option. - Dual cameras. The 2nd is physically 6x zoomed on same subject; even better than an 8K would be! - Built-in PC app that integrates all cameras to a single monitoring screen with robust playback capabilities. - Great build quality! - Con: The auto-activation sometimes misses human activation when not front-n-center, even at max sensitivity. All other pluses are irrelevant if it didn't take the shot. So I'd agree; not a "pro", but close.
Home owner here looking for something and found this video most helpful. I am still struggling to figure out what I really need, but these were outstanding things to think about.
Thanks so much brother ,,,just starting my search now , and I took all the notes needed from your vid ! Question: If you decide to go with a one way audio , can you shut the mic off -n- on ?
We currently building our home in TX Hill country and researching POE camera systems . This some of the best information I have come across. I have subbed to your channel. Thanks for the wealth of information
All EXCELLENT tips and to the point! I love it when someone gets straight to the point. I've been using Reolink cameras for a number of years. Bought the cheapest one for hobby purposes and ended up with several better models and a total of 12 now. I'm a serious believer of wired and/or POE system. WiFi tends to be sketchy depending on your area (environment). Reolink has fairly decent cameras and they're reliable but their home apps lack a lot of improvement...
George, thank you for this excellent vid. I’m tired of the Wi-Fi cameras and been thinking about hardwired. Great job in explaining it all. I wish you continued success.
8 years ago I bought a couple of cameras from chinia for $25 each. They still work and the video quality is pretty good and they have night vision with infrared light (and that also still works). They are "only" 1080P but very good quality.. Tried a more expensive one last years but the quality wasn't that good as my old cheap ones (it supposed to be 2K but it's crap)..But now it's time to get some new ones, new ones with pan/tilt and with follow.
Thank you for explaining! I just started shopping and there are so many options. It was confusing. You explained perfectly to beginners and it’s really helpful!
Really appreciate your video. We have a nosey neighbour 1. Wifi 2. Solar 3. Eufy 4. 2k 5. L.e.d.? 6. Under the roof over hang 7. Stationary 8. It is hard to find 'no audio' 9. Smart phone 10. No
Thanks for another great video. It helps a lot. I’ve been going through a rabit hole trying to find the best security system for my needs. There’s maybe something else that I would add to the list: NVR security. I’ve read that isolating your NVR from the internet with firewall rules is really important to prevent hackers from getting inside your network. What are your thoughts about that? And are you doing something else to protect your system and network when installing these devices? Thanks again!
NVR security is very important. Nowadays there are a lot more options to maintain your camera system privacy. Alibi for example uses a Peer to Peer connection. So instead of your router & port forwarding like the old days (which is the least secure), your system is being hosted on a secure server with end to end encryption. The sole purpose of that method is to maintain your privacy.
This is another example of “you get what you pay for”. If you go for the cheaper entry level “big box” systems, your privacy is more at risk, because those companies barely have privacy on their road map. Yet another reason to always go professional grade.
Thank you so much. This video has been helpful as I am sitting on a decision to buy home security cameras. I like gadgets and always fancy smart stuff, however, now I know the cons of wireless cameras. Thank u once again
legitimately the only reliable resource I've found so far. I understand that this question is a hail mary, but I've got to try: What are your recommendations for a security system that covers all of these aspects? I'm sure there are probably none that cover everything, and if they come close, I'm sure they're not budget friendly whatsoever, but I had to ask!
G'day. I have 15 Reolink cameras installed at the moment. All fixed 5MP except for an 823A and 1 Duo2. 2 ofthe 5MP cameras have better image detail than standard 8MP as they have optical zoom (at full zoom). The PTZ is usually aimed at an intersection to capture everyone in the area. It is also great for watching things as they happen without having to go outside. I run floodlights facing the road every night (corner block) allowing most the cameras to remain in colour.
@@GeorgeLangabeer The Police often ask for my CCTV and tell me it is amongst the best they get. Arson, Murder, Assult, Car crashes and stolen cars amongst some content I have supplied.
@@JM-if1mo G'day, With all of the extra floodlights I have on every night, they are all great out to about 30 meters. Then it depends on distance and additional lighting. I appreciate your transparency and honesty. It’s because of that I’m reaching out to you for recommendation. I currently have a new home that came with the ring system preinstalled. About a month after moving in Vivint sales people showed up in my door and convinced me to switch to Vivint, I have regretted that decision ever since! I have finally paid off the lease on the equipment and now I’m just paying the monthly service fee. My system includes two doorbell, cameras, two exterior cameras, thermostat control, glass, brake detector and a keypad and two smart door locks. I want to replace all of that. Man I'm struggling still in what to choose, great video, enlightening. Didn't think about that ptz being bamboozled by multiple targets. I an prettyv set on unify doorbell camera, but it's the additional ones i haven't decided. I'm going to assume this alibi is out of my budget. Been considering the reolink duo for the back , as my place has one of those alleys to the back and walking path on the side. So i feel like the single feed 180 is important. i think for outdoors, can't remember if mentioned but cold climate, how will it operates. Will check out your other videos
Dating the video and reminding viewers that things change quickly. But at least we would know what was quality on the date of the video.@@GeorgeLangabeer
Hello brother, hope your day is well. I’m listening from Texas! Ive been in Commercial Access Control for 4yrs, however as a contractor I will start to pivot towards residential surveillance services. I appreciate your insight on cameras and I’m in need of help deciding what cameras packages to offer in reference to price and quality in both WiFi & POE. I see you spoke about Eufy and Reolink, I want to provide great reliable products and service. Any help you can offer would be very much appreciated! Thank you for your time and blessings to you and your loved ones!
Great video. Thanks. Some considerations that i would like to hear about is the motion detection, notifications, alarm and remote storage options on a NAS, Cloud, Smart Phone. Possibilities to only store the video sequences that are relevant or a continuous recording with a retention period.
Thank-you for this great straight forward video lesson. I live in an apartment in a high crime part of town. I want to put up a security camera that covers my front door and one that covers the parking lot out back. Owner of property won't allow us to mount on outside of building. Other tenants in the building do have outdoor security cameras mounted indoors. They do work. Based on your video I think a 2 camera WiFi system would be a good match for me. I also think I would go with the PTZ type because the main thing we are tracking in the parking lot is people prowling the cars. So motion activated with a wide pan angle and color night vision. If you've got the time would appreciate your input much. Thanks again. Peace Out.
Unfortunately, you’re going to have trouble with the tracking features of a PTZ through glass. You’re also going to have issues with color night vision because of the reflection on the glass. So your best bet is a straightforward camera & turn the night vision off.
I’ve been doing this for over 20 years & have installed NVRs for thousands of people & I’ve never had one stolen…BUT, if you’re really worried about, install the NVR somewhere a thief wouldn’t look. Like a laundry room, or a closet that has power (or add power to a closet). There are plenty of places you can install one if you get creative.
Some things I considered that wern't on the list 1) Camera frame rate for day and night, Lens effective aperture, how compressed is the image (4k WiFI for example), and total cost to get all the services I wanted. Manufacturers like to bury costs in fine print.
Great video, and i appreciate your straight forwardness and honesty. Also saw your review on the Eufy S330, which i have perchaced. went with the 4 camera system, my house is old and wifi wont be and issue.. Thanks again. Also forwarding your videos to my friends who are also interested in securing their homes..
First video of yours, you seem like a good dude. I’m trying to figure out a solution for my elderly parents who split time in the north and down in Florida. I have a eufy doorbell cam down there and they are able to watch and like it, but the app seems clunky. The northern house needs a multi-camera setup and it’s overwhelming. I run a homelab server and am a developer, but I really hate doing tech support for family. I really would love to have everything in one app so those solar eufy cameras might be the way to go. Thanks for the overview.
I've studied this for many days trying to decide what is best for me. Everything I learned is explained in your video. Great job. I wanted something easy for my parents to be able to view, they aren't so great with phone apps and stuff. I installed a Tapo camera because the app is about as simple as it gets. I'll install another camera and perhaps one indoors. I guess the only thing not mentioned in this video is some cameras can back-up the video on a memory card and or cloud storage. Or someTapo cameras use a hub that you can put a memory card in. Tapo also gives you a free 30 day cloud storage for every camera that you buy. And perhaps another topic is some cameras have AI features, such as people detection, animal detection, and others.
Yup. I’ve had WiFi cams for over a year and I have them running 24/7. Have to change the battery every 4 months. It’s a pain in the ass especially since I many to change. Also my neighbors house was robbed while they were out of town because we had a power outage for 2 days . Looks like I’ll be going with Poe nvr
Thanks for those tip. Since wire is best can I put a camera looking through a window at the front of my small home. I will then hard wire my internet and plug to power. Without drilling through my brick facade. Thanks
It’s not ideal, especially at night. It depends on the camera, but a lot of them have night vision LEDs that will reflect off the window and you won’t see anything at night.
Hi Sir, thank you for the clear information and advice. I'm currently in Australia, where there are few security camera options available. However, I'm unsure which reliable brand to choose since Alibi is not available here. Thank you
Great informative presentation, any suggestion on a wireless outdoor camera that I can access with my cellphone when not at home? I'm currently using the Blink 4 outdoor system but I find it just okay at best. Thank you in advance for your help and suggestions.
Been looking for this information from an experienced installer. Took notes as I followed along and it helped me make a decision on which setup to go with. Thanks for uploading this and sharing your knowledge and expertise.
Thanks for your insight! Although basic but still very helpful. I only wishes to add one though t for wireless security camera is that wifi signal strength and speed should be strong enough to cater for 2k video that is transmitting as you don't want lag for your video that you are seeing.
Currently going through this porcess. Technology is so quick to evolve so this was very informative. Currently, I'm look into the Defender series. Any thoughts?
Please do some review for indian security camera brands too. I am sure you will get good auidence from here too. You have great knowledge and this video is very helpful.
Hey man, great video! Would you mind telling me all the security cameras that are in your thumbnail? There are some I’m interested in, but can’t seem to find the model of.
Good video, thanks for posting. The IR on my Night Owl 1080p Wi-Fi cam lights up reflective street signs at well over 150'. Not saying they're the greatest but they're not cheap junk either. Calling them drug dealer cameras isn't very nice, some people have to use what they can afford. Night Owl is also NDAA & FCC compliant, most consumer level systems aren't.
Excellent information & video. Still confused. I’m a truck driver, basically want to deter or report. I drive across country so I want them to see the cameras & move on or if not, record them. I don’t have internet at home just a mobile hotspot that travels with me, so I can’t have wi-fi cameras but the thought of drilling holes in my walls for wired camera makes me ill. I will be checking your other video for info & solutions but thx for this info
Hey Mr. George looking to buy security cameras for our home, mostly outside. Someone tried to break into my husband's outdoor building! Watched your video, feel like you could help me make a good choice! Would highly appreciate your help in choosing the right camera! Thank You! Probably gonna have to do wifi cameras cause of the wiring. Want something I can follow on my phone! Love your video!
George, good video and thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. I was looking for Ubiquity and your video came up so I watched it, however I didn’t see anything about them. What is your opinion of them? I have a system on my parents’ home with them and am looking to do mine. I’m sick of buying these doorbells that the batteries die because they are “wired” but those wires don’t charge them! Then they don’t work, but cameras and doorbells are my primary concern. Thanks, Matt
Thank you for the good information. I have a question for you, though. I own a small automotive shop. We are not really profitable yet but we want something for the front office and around the front. What do you recommend? I need audio in the front counter. Any suggestions would be great.
Hi bud do u have to pay prescription😢 for cameras also can they be acessed by the app or police etc without you knowing ? Also are they easy to hack? Thanks
Hi, question? Do you have a video on a rural setup. At this location I’d like a setup with license plate/face recognition at distance of about 100ft and nighttime visibility. Mobile viewing half can be WiFi half wired thanks, nice video.
I know this is not necessarily related but have you ever looked at trail cams and things that the only reason I say that is cuz I have a larger property and I'd kind of like to get something like that to fine for trespassers but there are so many out there and I just don't know which ones to look for
Yes, I sold them once upon a time, but but I wasn’t a big fan, so I stopped. It’s been so long. I really don’t have a good one to suggest for you. Sorry.
Hello, IM in St. Louis and IM trying to get a security system. The people I talked to here seem like they don’t give a rip about you. You know your stuff I can tell that. How could I reach out and talk about security systems. Love the video
Great content sir, I want to make automation of saving every person in the neighborhood making a solid database for facial recognition eventually, register car numbers and so on. Is it a way to make such a system with wires old-school cameras ? Thanks 🙏
Thank you this was helpful. I would have liked if at the end you covered your top pics for the 5 most common installation types. Even though that would have put you over your 20 min goal (I assume). I'll be checking your channel to see if this has already been covered though since its a "whole video itself" topic. Also that was real classy calling Alexa "lady A from Amazon". I was like hey that's the way to do that. And subbed.
Poor (cheap) build quality, bad night vision, less quality features (like no Wide Dynamic Range or 3D Noise Reduction), no tech/warranty support, won’t hold up to the weather, easily vandalized…I could go on & on.
Great Sump up!! thanks. What do you think of Hilook or Dahua Camera/systems? is it worth it. I am in Australia BTW. Also i want to put 5-7 cameras outside operating 24/7, and 1 camera inside but manually turn on/off when we go out, is there way to do it in the app? or do i have to manually unplug the cable? Wired, stored on hard drive at home (no cloud).
Started with IQ CCTV (720p) then upgraded to Swann (1080p) then I got a Hikvision but still use the swann cameras as they are 1080p, I think of switching to Riolink 4K IP Cameras
Hi. Great video. Happy i came accros this. Now i have the blink wireless and when internet went down system did not come on again. Looking of wiring a wired system. Been considering the reolink duo for the back , as my place has one of those alleys to the back and walking path on the side. So i feel like the single feed 180 is important.
i think for outdoors, can't remember if mentioned but cold climate, how will it operates.
Will check out your other videos
As a rookie like myself looking to buy a home camera system, this video was great. Very insightful and detailed in breaking it all down. Thank you!
You’re very welcome & I’m so glad it helped you. Thanks for watching!
@@GeorgeLangabeer wishing you had a video top 5 camera to go with. I think I would trust your judgement.
@marinoang That’s a great suggestion, but the problem is, that list would be outdated within a month.
Dating the video and reminding viewers that things change quickly. But at least we would know what was quality on the date of the video.@@GeorgeLangabeer
Pros and Cons of PTZ was helpful. Thank you!
Happy to help!
The Moment he said that wired is better than WiFi cameras..... I pressed the like button.
No question. Wired is always better.
Great video. Thanks. Some considerations that i would like to hear about is the motion detection, notifications, alarm and remote storage options on a NAS, Cloud, Smart Phone. Possibilities to only store the video sequences that are relevant or a continuous recording with a retention period.
I would love that too! I have the icsee app but I have a hard time understanding it even to set my camera.
Ask Orange #93 is the best one🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Great Great and informative. How do we protect our NVR from being stolen along with the other items? Because the NVR has the footage only?
I’ve been doing this for over 20 years & have installed NVRs for thousands of people & I’ve never had one stolen…BUT, if you’re really worried about, install the NVR somewhere a thief wouldn’t look. Like a laundry room, or a closet that has power (or add power to a closet). There are plenty of places you can install one if you get creative.
came here for annoying orange but this is legit helpful and very straightforward, ill probably use this at somepoint when i buy a house or smth
I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Some things I considered that wern't on the list 1) Camera frame rate for day and night, Lens effective aperture, how compressed is the image (4k WiFI for example), and total cost to get all the services I wanted. Manufacturers like to bury costs in fine print.
Some great considerations 👍🏻
Great video, and i appreciate your straight forwardness and honesty. Also saw your review on the Eufy S330, which i have perchaced. went with the 4 camera system, my house is old and wifi wont be and issue.. Thanks again. Also forwarding your videos to my friends who are also interested in securing their homes..
Thank you. Much appreciated. You’ll have to let me know what you think about the S330 after some time with them.
You’re welcome.
You covered some good points here. Thanks for sharing!
I just ordered a Tapo MagCam camera. If it works as good as they say, I'll get another! Great video btw! 😮
Nice. Thank you!
Since wire is best
can I put a camera looking through a window at the front of my small home. I will then hard wire my internet and plug to power. Without drilling through my brick facade. Thanks
It’s not ideal, especially at night. It depends on the camera, but a lot of them have night vision LEDs that will reflect off the window and you won’t see anything at night.
I'm from India. Very informative. Thank you. Have taken notes for my home cctv setup.
So glad you found it useful.
Hi Sir, thank you for the clear information and advice. I'm currently in Australia, where there are few security camera options available. However, I'm unsure which reliable brand to choose since Alibi is not available here. Thank you
Unfortunately, being in the States, I’m really not aware of options in Australia. Wish I could be more help.
Great informative presentation, any suggestion on a wireless outdoor camera that I can access with my cellphone when not at home? I'm currently using the Blink 4 outdoor system but I find it just okay at best. Thank you in advance for your help and suggestions.
Thanks! There are several good options & I’ve reviewed many of them on my channel.
Excellent summary of surveillance camera systems available. How does one become an Alibi dealer?
Glad you enjoyed it. They have a spot on their website where you can inquire.
Been looking for this information from an experienced installer. Took notes as I followed along and it helped me make a decision on which setup to go with. Thanks for uploading this and sharing your knowledge and expertise.
So glad it helped. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for your insight! Although basic but still very helpful. I only wishes to add one though t for wireless security camera is that wifi signal strength and speed should be strong enough to cater for 2k video that is transmitting as you don't want lag for your video that you are seeing.
Great addition! Definitely a consideration you should think about.
Currently going through this porcess. Technology is so quick to evolve so this was very informative. Currently, I'm look into the Defender series. Any thoughts?
Please do some review for indian security camera brands too. I am sure you will get good auidence from here too. You have great knowledge and this video is very helpful.
Excellent thanks - I have more homework to do, but this is a great start.
So glad you found it helpful. Thanks for watching!
perfect video for someone thinking to upgrade like myself. thank you.
Glad it helped. Thanks for watching!
Great video for someone who is clueless
lol. Glad you found it helpful.
What brands would you recommend for home wifi cameras . . Just starting to look at some . . Any recommendations would be appreciated . .
Eufy, Tapo & Reolink.
👍👍👍👍👍
Excellent comment
“ you get what you pay for “
That basically sums up everything.
Hey man, great video! Would you mind telling me all the security cameras that are in your thumbnail?
There are some I’m interested in, but can’t seem to find the model of.
I went with Unifi UNVR & I love it. I'm not going to recommend nothing else for anyone. The network & controller plus the UNVR-UDM-Switch Love it...
Unifi is always a solid choice.
Well done, I’m starting my search for a home and shop setup. Thanks!!!
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching!
Thanks mate love your work! Can you do a video on NVR smart home friendly security cameras? whats your recommended brand for this? cheers mate!
Thanks! That’s a great suggestion and I wish I could, but sadly there are very few. So I don’t have a good one to recommend. Wish I did.
The Best video about Home Security I have seen ! Thank you !
Thank you. I appreciate that. Glad you enjoyed it and you’re welcome.
Top intro. Not to be missed.
Thanks!
Thank you for the good information. I have a question for you, though. I own a small automotive shop. We are not really profitable yet but we want something for the front office and around the front. What do you recommend? I need audio in the front counter. Any suggestions would be great.
Really brilliant video, and answered many of my questions. In Australia is Hikvision our version of Alibi?
Thanks! Yes. Hikvision is one of the biggest camera manufacturers in The World. Their high-end products are also professional grade.
Hi bud do u have to pay prescription😢 for cameras also can they be acessed by the app or police etc without you knowing ? Also are they easy to hack?
Thanks
If you’re talking about the Alibi wired cameras, the answer is NO, to all your questions.
My contact information is in the description of the video.
Very much needed information! Thanks a lot sir!🇫🇷🇵🇭
I’m happy it helped. You’re very welcome & thanks for watching!
Great video and information. This answered a lot of the questions I was looking for.
Awesome. So glad it helped. Thanks for watching!
Great content sir, I want to make automation of saving every person in the neighborhood making a solid database for facial recognition eventually, register car numbers and so on. Is it a way to make such a system with wires old-school cameras ? Thanks 🙏
THANK YOU!!! This video was a tremendous help.
You’re very welcome. Glad it helped!
really appreciate this video and all the info provided.
any recommendations for southern california security camera install businesses?
I can get you a good system if you want to contact me. You just need a decent electrician to install it for you.
@@GeorgeLangabeer thank you for replying to my message. I will email you with more information later this week.
And subbed.
Thanks & welcome to the channel! I did a video on installation. Here you go:

You’re very welcome. Thanks for the comment & thanks for watching!
George Langabeer Could you tell me what is the best trail camera for my woods let me know thank you.
I don’t use trail cams, so I’m afraid I don’t have a good answer for you.
@@GeorgeLangabeer OK thank you.
Could you explain more about how the non-pro grade cameras come up short? Other than maybe resolution, what could functionally be different?
Wired, stored on hard drive at home (no cloud).
thank you for this very valuable information; greatly appreciate this. God bless

Started with IQ CCTV (720p) then upgraded to Swann (1080p) then I got a Hikvision but still use the swann cameras as they are 1080p, I think of switching to Riolink 4K IP Cameras
Couldn't expect easier to understand "essential tips" . Thanks!
