When my best friend and I moved to Oregon from LA area and lived in my car for a bit in 2018 the very first night after we left we slept in my car in that very parking lot you're eating breakfast in at 4:38. I'd recognize it anywhere. Brings back such great memories and is crazy to see it here lol. We got there at night and didn't see the view until 5am when the sun rose. The beauty of Big Sur changed my life.
"Hate to be the old guy who sez: My first trip to Big Sur was Jan. 1960 with a buddy and fellow architecture buff to see Nathanial Owen's (of Skidmore Owens and Merril fame) house, Wild Bird. Other highlight of that trip was being picked up by Henry Miller on Partington Ridge in the rain to get us back to the highway. Wow 60 years ago. Even Big Sur changes yet still behind the times...Thanks for the memories.
@@wolfgangk2824 yeah I remember on that first trip stopping at Slates hot springs well before it became Esalen. Sitting in the old bathtubs. Hot water and fog and sea gulls and surf crashing below. Had two microbuses in my day which i gardened out of for a living. BTW If you are familiar or aren't with that intersection go on Google Earth and do street view where the rads connect. It's amazing, I've lived in Northern California all my life, but it's easy to get caught up in your daily life and forget the beauty available. Thank for motivating me to get out there again.
Central California is the best of both worlds of northern and southern California in terms of natural beauty. It also has a lower population density so that it is easier to enjoy that natural beauty. Having drinks on the grass at Ventana Big Sur, overlooking the coast, you feel like a God on Mount Olympus. Something magical about that place.
Peter check out @ 1:00 something like a big lizard type animal comes out of nowhere and runs to the ocean, I was raised in Paso Robles about 3o miles away so I know the Hirst Castle area etc, but check it out, it runs to fast for a seal
I've lived in California my hole life. It's undeniably beautiful. The problem is we get bad press because of our politics. The drive into Kern and Inyo County at Sunrise is incredible. Epic mountain ranges, wild horses, cattle on peoples farms, ect.
Why? We are very environmentally conscious believe it or not.. We respect our green and rural areas for the most part.. But of course there idiots all over the world.
The Americas are both full of immense natural beauty. Pity the white man and his corporations don't give a damn. They need more presidents like Theodore Roosevelt and Lula.
At 8:27. Look at that view. Some of these cabins might date back to the 1930s. There was a bit of a Bohemian lifestyle in Big Sur. A lot of artists lived there and it was a cheap place to live. Edward Weston and Charis Wilson lived in Big Sur.
I loved your beautiful story. What a special gift, to ride with the hawks. One of my favorite memories of camping is. 3 days in the clouds. Up in the Sequoia's, hiking and camping with clouds cover to the ground. It was magical, early spring so had to keep an ear out for bears. Because you sure weren't gonna see them.
I wish you would have showed the restaurant when you were in Gorda staying in that cabin lived and worked there for 3 years thanks for another great video
It definitely shows in Peter's health that he spent his good years eating and living a very natural and healthy lifestyle... wish we could have that in Pakistan
My old stomping grounds was in the mountains between Big Sur and Carmel Valley, the Ventana Wilderness. There are hot springs 20 miles in the middle of the coastal mountains there. Grew a lot of herb out there back in the day…
Loved that episode - as I did the previous ones, been many years since I’ve taken that road from SF - LA, only did it the once during some work I was on from 🇬🇧, thanks for sharing, brought me many good memories. 🙏
I became interested in northern California after watching the movie Need For Speed. Though released in 2014, I only watched it in 2019. I enjoy your California series Pete. Thanks for sharing
You've been gone too long (or just didn't know). But landslides from rainy season took out entire long sections of Highway 1 and put them into the ocean. That is why the tunnel is there (completed only in 2019 I believe). An even worse one happened last year (and now you cannot even get to Southern Big Sur (impassible). They are working on it, but it is going to be a years long and massively expensive project. Great video though - as always.
Hey, you should do one on the Tri-valley area in SF Bay Area. We live here and my American friends from other states think that SF Bay Area has the image of downtown SF. You should do the East side of the Bay Area. Danville has the restaurant where they filmed Mrs. Doubtfire, Bridges. Dublin has a Irish butter museum and company, but the center of Dublin has a concentration of Chinese, Indians and other Asians. In between, Pleasanton and Livermore (across San Francsico Outlet Malls), there is a big modern mall with foods from different parts of Asia. They opened the mall about 1 year ago. I recommend the Japanese Tataki Ice cream. There is the Car Museum in Blackhawk Museum (they have more than cars. They have a nice African, American Wild West and Chinese exhibit with copies of the terracota warriors from the tombs of important folks in China). It is inside of an almost ghost mall (Blakchawk), but beautiful and well cared place with a little man made waterfall and calm ducks, goose and swans that you can feed. It is an interesting place to explore for a video. It is a contrast to the SF downtown.
I`ve done this road trip twice, such an incredible scenery, second one was all the way from seattle down to LA thru 101 and 1,drive down to San Diego there is a lot to see here as you may know and maybe Tijuana too.Enjoy Peter

Your "coverage" of Big Sur kind of missed Big Sur. I grew up on the Monterey Peninsula. If you're ver back in the area and want a tour guide, hit me up.
The reason why some hillsides have trees and others are more barren isn’t because of the fog. They both get the same fog. It’s just that the barren hillsides face south where they get more sun exposure that dries out the soils.
One, I love Big Sur, and the "Gold Coast" (or Tri counties) of SLO, SB and Ventura, but I still find the Lost Coast (the far north near Redwoods) the "most" beautiful. Big Sur looks geographically very similar to some parts of the South Eastern coasts of Australia. Trees are a bit different though.
Interestingly enough all of the eucalyptus trees in California are from Australia. They came over during the Gold Rush time of 1849.
