  • Late spring can be the ideal time to spearfish for flatfish off the coast of North Wales, large numbers of Plaice arrive inshore and there is always the chance of shooting a Sea Bass at the same marks.
    In this video I head to some remote offshore reefs, a series of rocky pinnacles that rise up from the seabed and attract large numbers of fish of all species.
    Lots more top tips on spearfishing for flatfish, in this video a good number of Plaice and flounder are shot, plus footage of Thornback Rays and a few other species.
    North Wales Spearfishing is truly excellent, with a vast number of exciting marks to try and a range of species, if you enjoy the video, like and subscribe to see more content like this!

    Great video! I’m going to Rhosneigr for my first spearfishing trip in 2 weeks

      Glad you enjoyed it! Rhosneigr is a good area to start, however you'll have more success at some of the quieter marks, anywhere with parking close by gets speared quite a lot now

      @@jackmetcalfe8542 really? I thought 90% of spearfishing activity in the uk was in Cornwall.

      @@funwithfish1507 I believe South Devon is the most popular area as it’s closer to population centres. Anglesey is good as a starter venue because there’s so many shallow marks to surface stalk

      @@jackmetcalfe8542 oh right ok. Also, correct me if I’m wrong but is there less commercial fishing and trawling in the Irish Sea? Last year I went rockpooling at criccieth and there was just so much sea life compared to the north sea

      @@funwithfish1507 there’s very little commercial fishing by North Wales based boats (aside from crab, mussles and lobster), and I’ve not seen much going on, but that probably reflects the lack of fish around unfortunately

    Great stuff,my sister has got a new gaff off Trearddur bay,so hoping to get up there for some spearo schizzle…normally we go off The Llyn …cheers.

      The Llyn is awesome, had some excellent Bass there at the weekend. Treudder Bay is a perfect place to have a place though!

      @@jackmetcalfe8542 we used to do a fair bit of night spearing,but they have banned it now…weirdly following an EU edict,which we were no longer in at the time ? !…daft really,as it’s WELL sustainable…on numbers alone.Bah ! (Our caravan is near Hells Mouth)

      @@joelfildes5544 The rules seem a bit confused about night spearing, I think it was put in place to protect fish in the Med when loads of spearos were out, whereas in the UK conditions are so rarely good that it probably didn't make a difference to fish stocks

    Great video but I wonder why you shoot the flatfish and dont just hand spear them with an unloaded gun?

    • @jackmetcalfe8542
      @jackmetcalfe8542  Рік тому

      Several times I’ve had a spear slide off the back of a flatfish when trying to stab - there’s absolutely no disadvantage of shooting them when they’re over sand

    • @foxfish7115
      @foxfish7115 Рік тому +2

      @@jackmetcalfe8542 hmm ok, personally I dont shoot them as I like to be very precise with where I place the spear and I also like to place my hand undef the spear once it has penetrated so the fish can not escape, especially with sole as they can go a bit mad!
      Spears are better than they used to be but people do damage or bend spears by shooting into the sand.
      Of course it is just a personal thing and not a criticism…..

    i never use shot for flatties, take spearshaft off the gun, and just dive closely and hit with hand, other than that all cool
