    Hey, thanks for all the tips. My technique has gotten better thanks to your vids and my coaches. So wing though I still struggle with is my timing. Could you do a vid on how to improve your timing and eye sight when batting? That would help so much.

    • @kylemarr5905

      SVLogger keep your footwork simple when fielding field the ball with glove out in front low, play the ball, and gain momentum by stepping right and then left into your throw to keep it short. I take it you’re a first baseman or third baseman??

    Guys; what are your thoughts on this variation of the drill?
    I've used 2 tees. One placed strategically deeper and lower in the zone in the inner half, and the 2nd out in front of the plate like you have it here. The challenge is to hit both balls with 1 swing and keep both in the middle of the field.

  • @kevinklippel6223
    @kevinklippel6223 6 років тому +3

    fantastic explanation, coach, of why the 'straight arm, chop down' swing does not work, especially when the kids start facing faster & better pitching... why the idea of a downward bat-path persists is just beyond me... I was just recruited to join the coaching staff for one of our city league all-star team... almost every kid (cream of the crop from the all the teams) swings down believing they are creating back spin... I ask em 'what was the majority of their hits during the season?' ... mostly weak grounders... I use your exact explanation about the downward pitch path... you can tell this is a totally new idea and has never been told to them!!! it's astounding because it's common sense. Keep up the great video's, coach.

      Hey coach, I couldn't resist adding this follow-up. I just got home from the first all-star game. It was an 11-1 victory filled with bombs to the out field and one GRD. The boys did hit a number of fly balls that were caught but, hey, that's baseball. What I'm most proud of: only 2 ground balls. I had two practices with them and hit the basics hard. Palm up/palm down, extension, hit the inside of the ball, etc, etc.... it was a good day to be a hitting coach.

    • @marcusfair5850
      @marcusfair5850 7 років тому

      bleef vleefs it matters how fast they throw , if they throw fast you ( I pick up my leg) want to be ready when there about to release it and then swing a little under the ball but not a straight up swing like golf because it will be a pop fly

      @@chiemisaito I don’t know if you still play but my biggest advice is to not try and swing through your shoes (basically you want to hit a home run and that’s all your thinking about and try to crush the ball and then end up swinging and missing or having weak contact) also you can work on explosive workouts

    Justin you're absolutely right getting on top of the baseball because then it will be on the ground and the reason why Coaches tell kids to get on top is because most kids do dropping their back shoulder (Which they should probably change that name by the way) and they've been underneath everything on a pitch location and Coaches don't realize that if kids get on top of the ball then it will be grounders which means they will be outs too!

    In regard to hitting "down on the ball", it seems to me that this is misunderstood on BOTH sides of the argument. I agree that you never want to hit "down onto the ball". It is a teach that is misunderstood and misrepresented by many coaches. This then allows others to easily debunk it by making a straw man argument like this.
    IMO, the purpose, or the real teach, is to start your hands (from load), so that you create a downward path initially. This is meant to prevent the dreaded "cast", where the barrel of the bat drops down behind the batter, then sweeps out and around the ball. It's deceiving, because if you're a tad late, it can result in line drive the other way. But only because the barrel didn't have time to get outside the ball.
    What I've used in it's place is focusing on keeping the "V" formed between the forearm and bat in tact as long as possible. This brings the barrel down as a result of rotation vs. dropping the barrel. This can clearly be seen at just after 5:30 into this video. The wrist angle is maintained, and the barrel takes a downward path directly to a point JUST before the hitting zone, then tilts upward to meet the path of the ball. You do in fact swing "down", just not "down on the ball".
    To be clear, I'm not disagreeing with anything in the video. I just don't like to see the baby thrown out with the bathwater. Just because this is often taught incorrectly doesn't mean the intended purpose is wrong.

    Yes, the pizza push, drop your back elbow as close to you as you can then its a small push with your hands keeping the head of the barrel pointed behind you then whip the head at the ball, key is keeping your hands close to your body not crowded so you maintain your power throughout the swing keeping your hands above the plain of the ball will give you the proper bat angle and line drives as you can see in the swing in the video.I agree I never understood the swing down at the ball thing? I guess it may be for proper bat angle, but if you keep your hands above the ball you will get the proper angle as you can see in your video.

    Chopping is what golfers do to a stationary ball to generate backspin. They take the divot AFTER hitting the ball. Baseball is all about 'on-plane'; swing metrics prove the angles that generate successful ABs.
