    These are sold in the States as Sea Monkys. I had some as a child but forgot about them for months. I went to check the jar one day and they were everywhere, breeding and consuming algae.

      As soon as I saw the title of this video I thought about Sea Monkeys. I had some as a kid and didn't realize they still sold them. For those of you who never heard of them, "Sea Monkeys" was (is) a ready-made kit sold in toy stores. It had everything you needed to start a brine shrimp habitat. The container it came in was the actual jar where they lived and had little magnifying lenses built right in so you could see them better. heh, good times.

    I culture them by adding micro algae fertilizer (very low in Cu) to salt water along with a micro algae starter. Once the water turns green I add either cysts of freshly hatched brine shrimp. This is a good way to grow adults but they will eventually clear the water and run into a starvation situation. It is really hard to keep them in a balanced ecosystem. They almost always strip out all the algae and then starve.
    Good Luck,
    Chris

    • @Togmot
      @Togmot 5 років тому +9

      Maybe you need to add predators or parasites to cull the shrimp numbers before they eat all the algae.

    • @sergeantsonso3490
      @sergeantsonso3490 3 роки тому +3

      @@LifeinJars you need a population of predators in there, as well as crevices that only the brine shrimp can hide in. so the predators can manage the populations of the brine shrimp, then reproduce hopefully as the mature adults die out from either starvation and/or other natural causes, and then the brine shrimp can bounce back in equilibrium.

    I had a sea monkey farm once, the little ones you could buy at stores. I was a dumb kid and added everything at once, eggs, food, all of it. They hatched and died in just a day, so I thought. I left it on my windowsill anyway because it was pretty watching the algae grow that had turned the container green and lush in a couple weeks. Almost a month later I went to toss it out and noticed little specks, brine shrimp! Somehow, some eggs must have laid dormant and hatched after the algae grew. These shrimp also grew way past the advertised 3mm and some got up to one centimeter in length. I'll never forget that strange accident, and this reminds me of it.

I’m totally hooked on your videos and you’ve inspired me to try these ecosphere jars with my kids to see what is in our local (Florida) ponds, puddles, lakes, oceans, and streams. We have a pond behind our home but Albert the alligator makes collection of water and substrate from it a challenge especially since he hates me for hitting him (accidentally) in the eye with a wad a bread when he refused to leave and let us feed the snapping turtles and fish. Every time he sees me, he comes straight at me and hisses. Currently he’s a baby and not big enough to actually not be stepped on by me if he comes close and we refuse to allow him to partake in our fish/turtle feeding adventures as he should fear us and not depend on us. Anyways love your channel!!

    OK, you HAVE to start telling us about the music! I love all the pieces you play in the videos, but this one is particularly nice. Who are they? Anyway another great video, and yes, they ARE fun to watch. Someone gave me some as a kid back in the 50s when the Sea Monkey Craze first happened (I'm 70 now). Of course being a little kid I loved them, but I didn't know much biology, so they didn't last long. So I'm particularly enjoying this Jar! Keep up the great projects!

    Perhaps the higher ploidy of the eggs helps them survive harsh environments for longer peroids of time

    Wow I fed billions of these to my fish and also hatched them for fish. But I did not know all these science facts. Amazing

    that's actually a good idea to ask the LFS if they can spare you 8 or 16 oz of their salt water

    They look like a bunch of little Casper the Ghosts. 👻 They are even smiling! I never knew how cute they were. I may never be able to feed them to my fishes again!! 😁

    Use water that is quite high in nitrates, like 100ppm, thats what will help the algae grow very quick as the algae feeds from the nitrates in the water, thats why people who don't do enough water changes on aquariums have alot of algae

    If brine shrimp need calcium and stuff then use specifically reef salt not just regular salt water. They add stuff with the salt so when mixed with RODI you get a very very close replication of ocean water.

    I got a triop kit when I was a kid. It was this tiny cup that you put the eggs in with water. When I hatched I was too young to know how bad it was to overfeed them. Their legs/gills got clogged with algae and food and they died. It was fucked up
