Landlord speaks out about Calgary rental nightmare that allegedly cost victims thousands

- A rental nightmare that a Calgary senior said defrauded him out of thousands of dollars continues to get a lot of attention, including from the actual landlord.
Gerry Bathla has been busy back home in India, so he was surprised to hear alleged fraudsters have been busy “renting” out his home in Calgary.
“That’s my house,” he told Global News. “You can’t just post an ad up.”
But he said that’s exactly what someone did on several popular rental websites.
Bathla said he was first alerted to the possible scam when his brother called him from Calgary. He had been receiving calls from a number of people asking about the home being up for rent and a discrepancy in the rental amount.
“He started getting calls every day. Like, five or six calls,” he said. “They (renters) saw an ad somewhere cheaper. Like the same house, but cheaper.”
As Tomasia DaSilva reports, Bathla said the calls soon turned into unexpected visits.

His bottom line comment is "he doesn't trust ANY East Indians". "Their culture is to LIE and CHEAT, even their own families". Needless to say, I was quite shocked and threw out some questions to better understand exactly what he was saying ....and he was very forthcoming in explaining with examples of what his father went through with his brothers AND sisters AND other relatives. I very quickly stepped away from that conversation and went a different conversation .......but the new knowledge stuck.
It has recently resurfaced with the CHOHAN TRUCKING, owned by Sunny Singh Chohan, an East Indian, who's commercial trucks have been responsible for overpass collisions in the Vancouver areas in B.C. Trucks with loads "over height" or dump boxes not lowered. Damage to the overpasses costing taxpayers MILLIONs to repair. Since 2021 there have been 35 strikes with most happening in 2023 alone. Prior to 2021 all the way back to 1990, there have only been a FEW strikes. The government AND trucking industry leaders approached Chohan with MULTIPLE WARNINGS, and he kept coming up with a bunch of very LAME excuses ...which, FINALLY, his operating license in B.C. was suspended. So what did he do? He brought in his trucks from Alberta and kept operating!!! The government then finally put a stop to that AND then legislated NEW PENALTIES ......UP TO $100,000 FINES .....AND/OR 18 MONTHS PRISON TO THE DRIVERS!!!! This pretty well sums up how EAST INDIANS OPERATE. The flaunt their own responsibilities .....put everyone else at risk .......and they will LIE about everything and DENY everything ......BECAUSE THAT'S THEIR CULTURE.
There is another trucking firm, T S D Holdings Ltd., owned by Gurnez Sangha. Another EAST INDIAN. His trucks have ALSO been involved in overpass strikes .....just not as many .....but the government also shut down this company's entire fleet, after an investigation and the same typical irresponsible response from Sangha.
So the moral of the story is something along the lines of, "when dealing with East Indians ...either be very careful .....or DON'T, if you want a hassle-free life".

Someone tried this on me 5 years back for a rental house in Hamilton, Ontario. Landlord said he was living out of province. I asked where. He said Saint John, Newfoundland. That was when I realized he was a scammer. Most of this type of scam are initiated from outside of Canada.
Very possible ...but just be careful about jumping to conclusions. You should be more insistent and get far more accurate information to confirm your information. I provide the following information that I know is a lot more accurate.

I would be willing to bet that the owner is in on the scam. I own a business and 100% of people I either have to chance down or never get paid from are just like this guy.

He could have been 2 blocks away and the scammer is posting his pictures in a bogus ad elsewhere, dealing with potential renters completely unbeknownst to him, people are desperate for rentals and many are desperate enough to send a deposit sight unseen. Also report to CRA tip line about lifestyle factors and pose as a previous renter who was asked to pay cash with multiple people living in the property.

Cause the Surname Chouhan/Chauhan belong to North and North Western States of India.
In Eastern and North Eastern India you will find different surnames. Like Dutta , Bhattacharya , Barua , Mohanty , Sahu , Bordou , Akhjom,Aheibam.....etc
Most important people of Eastern India and North eastern India don't migrate to West much ( Except for Bengalis Probably) they rather go to Korea , UAE , Singapore , Japan Thailand that too very less numbers ( It is a Part of country that is less exposed to outside world....)

I arrived in Calgary in Sept. 78. I heard of scams back then, still continues today. Back then it was the first boom, rents were really really high, renting out dumps. Then the boom went bust in 82, thank you pierre trudeau! vacancy rate went from .01% to 14% in two years. landlords gave away apartments. I signed a year lease, got my first month and last month rent free, on 24th floor, all utilities included, underground parking, pool, sauna tennis courts, exercise room, cable included. $405 a month.
This is a HUGE problem where I live in the Myrtle Beach area. People find empty homes, vacation homes, find the info on Zillow and steal it OR they will break in, go in and take their own pics, turn the power on, have some story like “I am the property manager for the owners who live out of the area.” It will seem 100% legit!! Until one day you find out it’s not, you’ve lost thousands, and now have less than 48hrs (in our experience) to find, fund and pack and move to a new place. It’s HORRIBLE. It happened to my parents and they (we) lived there for over a year!!
Someone I know moved from Toronto to Calgary,they used to real estate agent (personal trusted recommendation) for a short term rental. They were only able to see pictures not in person.

You simply copy pictures and text from real estate companies renting houses and apartments online and change the contact info. Do not give any money in advance for anything. It is not a new scam.

Can you Please Explain what you Canadians mean by Term EAST INDIAN?? Cause almost negligible people from Eastern and North eastern part of India move out that too especially to the Western countries. Those Eastern Indians who move out go to UAE , Korea , Japan , Thailand , Vietnam , Africa , Russia , Kazakhstan etc ( That too a in small number since Eastern Part of India have been less exposed to Western Culture)
