Hey guys my name is Blake also known as Nailed it here on UA-cam. I make videos about products, tools, building, and remodeling.
Today, I will be testing whether or not 100% silicone and dry and fully cure underwater. Alongside the silicone, I will be testing other types of caulk and silicones as a comparison. I was genuinely curious about this myself so I figured why not test it and see. I hope you guys enjoy the video and let me know if you have any questions about it in the comments and I will do my best to answer them. I hope you learned something today and saved some money in the meantime. Also, don't forget to nail that subscribe button! ;)

Yes, a clear silicone comparison. I'm an artist and I use silicone caulking all the time. Good work!
Amazing practical review and to the point. Thanks for the experiment and the insight.
No problem! Glad you enjoyed!
Thank you for the testing and advice, I had a leak in my toilet tank and needed to know how it would work, and watching your video helped me to understand the curing time and which one work…I went for the clear thanks to you and for going through all the trouble🙏👏
Nice video! I used the all purpose clear one to glue my rock work for my reef tank.
Great video! I'm going to use that clear silicon sealant for my cistern
great video. Thank you for making it and sharing it. Answered two important questions for me and I appreciate it.
Follow-up. After doing the work and reading up on the manufacturer's website, I have learned the hard way that the silicone takes 24 hours to cure. exposure to water previous to that full curing will undermine longevity. It might have been hard under the water in your experiments, but it seems that according to the manufacturer that it isn't cured. I did not have the same results with your top pick that you had. I ended up having to redo the work because water was getting through not fully hardened silicone after giving it several hours to try to cure. It might be a function of how thick it is. Also, it is definitely partially a function of heat/humidity. ironically, they recommend humidity for best curing. mostly for the heat that speeds up the reaction. I still appreciate the video. I just wanted to give some follow-up because it was frustrating to learn the hard way. But, ultimately the product you picked was a solid one, just didn't cure that fast for me when exposed to water.
Thanks for the info. Have been searching this info for some time cause I need to build a sump inside my water filled tank. Thank you!
Great job! Helped me... Trying this today on a culvert seam.
Working on my fish tank right now with a drip leak and applied GE 2 silicone and finding this was a life saver!!!
GE 2 has mold inhibitors you should not use this on aquariums it will leach and kill your fish and plants
Did it work?
@@NeanderthalDogma yes worked fine have used it a few times since then no issues. Even with fragile species
Thanks, just what I was looking for. I have just siliconed some lights in my fountain and was wondering how long I needed to let it sit. Now I know. Thanks again
Thank you, I'm replacing bullet LED light housings in my hot tub and didn't want to drain it. Now I can try silicone on the flange to help seal them without draining the tub.
You are the man for actually making a video about this
Great job. Will buy this GE All Purpose 100% Silicon. It is sold everywhere
Sweet! This is the only kind of Silicone I use and own so this is great to know! On my way to fix a pipe for my Mom now!
Thank you! 💯🤞💯
Lol no problem! Glad I could help and good luck with the pipe!
Thank you so much. I have been searching for a product that will dry (seal) underwater and you just solved my problem. I have a Koi pond with some expensive Koi and my pond liner developed a leak. I am headed to purchase 100% clear silicone.👍
Do a comparison of all the clear silicone sealants available. The GE quick drying one that halfway cured is white and they have a clear version. The chemicals used to make it colored actually play a big part in how itll cure. Id be very interested to see if they all would cure if you used the clear variants 🤘
Hm I didn’t nt know that had that many! Maybe I’ll consider making a video on it! Thanks!
Thanks very much! Just used the white GE on a plumbing project to seal a leak on a shower that gets used often. Great to see it held up somewhat. I hade the "supreme" not the "advanced" but they look similar. Next time I'm using that first one. You should get a kickback from them!
Thank You very much for this video.Very informative.i desparately needed this video.
No problem! Thanks for watching!
@@BlakeHQ is breathing sillicon glue smell ..toxic??? If it is new in my bathroom ..i have cloose the bath room many hours or many days ?????
Great test men 🎉
GREAT video thanks!
Came in handy to know. I had just sealed the bottom of a hummingbird feeder and was wondering if it was going to be ok outside. Thank you
Wow! Thank you so much!
Thanks for watching!
Thank your for making this video
I have been trying to get some RTV silicone to dry in a 3D printed mold I made, but it seems to stay wet in the middle every time. I was reading online that it uses the moisture in the air to dry, so I googling about submerging it in water, and found your video. I Tried heat, sunlight, and waited a few days before i split the mold, but nothing was working. I will try submerging it in water to see what happens.
Nice video Wondering how well the GE clear Silicone II would stick to the brick if you put the brick under water and then apply the silicone ? That's really what's most important because if it doesn't adhere to the wet surface then an underwater repair is not possible.
GE also says that it's not designed for constant underwater applications.
That would be a good test! I’ll have to make a video about that! Great idea!
I use GE clear silicone II for building fish tanks and aquariums, it's fine for underwater use. Not sure if it will stick if applied underwater though, my gut says no
Silicone will not stick to anything wet, so no.
super helpful
My kid ripped the granite seat out of my pool. This video was helpful! Thanks!
Interesting... I was going to buy Advanced Silicone but looks like I should settle for the regular. Thanks for posting this video.
Thanks for watching!
You're awesome GE silicone clear is winner
GE brand, the best I used on my PVC 18 ft pool, and it works, best silicone
Enjoyed very much and very useful to no. 😁👌
Thanks I appreciate all your support!
Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
can the all purpose one be like a barrier between a double wall cup? Like the inside of a double wall cup filled with water?. say I put water in the double wall then I squeeze the all purpose right in the middle to catch both sides of inner walls on both sides of cup on top? Will it keep in place dry hard there and NOT move from where I laid it? 🤔Thanks I hope I didn't confuse you?🤷♀
That’s sounds like you are in deep thought! I’m slightly confused lol! From my understanding this stuff will “cure” pretty much anywhere and it should stay in place for the most part! It’s probably worth a shot!
Finally, proof you can fix a leaky pond with silicone underwater.
interior vs exterior makes no difference to whether the product will cure wet or dry. Exterior silicone just has different additives, like UV stabilisers to prevent discoloration (or no colour at all), or modifiers that will allow the sealant to handle colder or hotter conditions. They will all be waterproof once cured (although some sealants can't be submerged for extended periods).
The reason some cure under water and some don't is simply because of the additives for things like colour, mould protection (antimicrobial), fast drying etc.
The silicones that didn't dry under water will just have more additives which are likely water soluble within them.
Thanks bro
3:32 🤣🤣🤣
I was about to say 'hey man dont dunk your hands in there'...suddenly, he realises the water doesnt look friendly for his non-refundable handses 🤣🤣🤣
I would have liked more examination of its adhesion: clear silicone?
🌏💫
But will it adhere, they didn’t seem to be stuck very well!!
Not "dry" but "cured"
Useful video, thank you.
Silicone is moisture cured.
This was a very extreme test. Only part weak was...You let the dry part of the brick and the contact of the silicon form a waterless seal between them. So that alone is not a good controlled test. But, you sealed them under water, so that was interesting. Use for roof patching?
Silicone wont adhere well to wet surfaces, but as you can see it cured submerged in water. It is a pretty good test.
None of these are meant to be used that way, but GE Silicone 1 worked best underwater because it's an older type called "acetoxy cure", which you can recognize from the vinegar smell. It works differently than the more modern "neutral cure". The difference isn't to do with the branding for interior/exterior etc. The latex ones are "water based", so they are easy to tool and clean up. A modern polyurethane-based sealant like Quad Max will advertise support for application in wet conditions because the polyurethane actually uses atmospheric moisture to cure.
Clear silicone may dry as it is underwater but don't expect it to adhere or waterproof edges or joints. It has to cure and not touch water for at least 24 hrs
Has very good adhesion property. Just try to remove some old silicone from a project. It's almost impossible to remove
Where can i buy that GE all purpose silicone in Philippines?
That is a very good question, I am not sure where you could buy it. If you don’t have access to Amazon.com and you can’t buy it somewhere locally. I might recommend eBay. You might be able to find a seller that is willing to ship it over there for you! Hope that helps!
Forget GE, just buy your local Silicone 100% pure
Is been 8 hours since I've applied the silicon caulk but didn't dried at all
24hrs ! ***Deppending on temps.
You saved my butt today! Actually my turtles butt!!
Not sure what you mean by that but I’m glad I could save your turtles butt! LOL
@@BlakeHQ his tank was leaking. Its a big tank, hes a big turtle. I had to replace the silicone myself, or buy a new 500 dollar tank. I couldnt wait 48 hours for the caulk to cure. I thought that air might not be necessary for the silicone to harden. I used a heat gun to get a good surface hardness , but underneath was still very soft. I laid it in thick. It came out perfect i think. I couldnt leave him in a bucket, he was getting crazy and the poop was horrible. Plus it took a month for me to build up filter bacteria and it would have died from stagnation after 2 days. And my hiuse would reek like crap. So yeah man you gave me the confidence to do the job! Thanks!
Haha wow what an awesome story! That just made my day! 😂 Glad I could help and I hope life is treating you and your turtle well!
"Dry" and "Cure" are the same thing.... most silicones are dry to touch in a few minutes, but the inner body of the silicone is still very soft.
but what if you apply it under water. will it bond to the surface and stay stuck?
I couldn’t say it for all of the caulks that I used but I definitely think that the 100% silicone would bond just fine underwater! Good question!
@@BlakeHQ test#2 :-)
🔷The true test would've been if he had applied the sealants to the brick ( under water ), which is ultimately the application that you'd wanna know if it worked.
• If the test brick had been °°already wet°°
or submerged, ...
the bonding of the 100% silicone might've turned out differently
Silicone will not bond to wet surfaces.
@@GENINC So if it is raining, and you apply it to a wet surface, and it sticks, what happens? I will let you know in a few days, as I used it outside in the rain to cover some cracks and such.
@@philindeblanc what happened?
@@clintonbecker5785 it cures. enjoy!
👍👍👌👌
calk when used correctly lasts mannny years...
Silicone may have cured but did not appear to adhere to the brick surface.
goot
At 3:58 it's more like sour cream.
Lol good point!
