    About
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nightwish is a powerhouse of symphonic metal hailing from Finland, known for their cinematic soundscapes and profound storytelling through music. Formed in 1996 by keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, the band combines metal with classical music elements, creating a distinctive, epic sound that has garnered a massive global following. "I Had an Angel" is a track that showcases Nightwish's signature blend of thunderous metal riffs and soaring symphonic arrangements. The song delves into themes of loss and redemption, conveyed through powerful lyrics and emotive music. It's a perfect example of how Nightwish can craft deeply moving narratives within their songs, making them resonate with fans across different backgrounds and tastes. This track, like many others from Nightwish, is not just a song but an emotional journey, making it an excellent choice for a first-time listener to experience the depth and passion of symphonic metal.

Hello Stephanie and Rob [ A View From the Stage ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This music video is from their 5th studio album "Once" (2004), then together with Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya], the 1st female singer of the band, and Marco Hietala, bassist and singer.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals) - you just heard her. She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile).
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "

When it's Nightwish, always choose the live version if available. Especially when it's Tarja and Marco singing a duet; they never quite managed to translate the chemistry they had on stage to the studio. Check out the version from the 'End of an Era' concert! Greetings from Finland!

Nice to see the original music video. They are so young there. There is no doubt some post-production.
I wish the bass was not hitting the stops and distorting the music for this reaction.
If you do Phantom, try the one with Tarja, and the recent live video from 2022 with Floor, who is pitch-perfect live, and a powerful singer.
It is clear you are very aware of the music from the bands from the Nordic countries.

This song revolves around frustration Tuomas Holopainen (Nightwish's keyboardist & principal composer( had while at a bar with his girlfriend. According to Tuomas:
"I was there with my girlfriend at the time, and all these guys kept hitting on her. Even people I knew - guys who were certainly aware that we were dating - tried to chat her up. There was a full-scale hookup going on on the dance floor. The line ‘wish I had an angel’ just slammed into my head. I [thought] it was so corny that it might even work. In a way, the dance beat conveys the setting of the song, and is an essential part of what that song’s about. Lyrically, it’s the most down-to-earth, redneck, truck-stop song I’ve ever written".

Stephanie might prefer Noora Louhimo's voice: "BATTLE BEAST - Master Of Illusion (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)". Or Netta Laurenne's. Samckbound's guitarist, Teemu Mäntysaari, is currently playing in Megadeath: "Smackbound - Change - Official Music Video". Also: "Dave Mustaine's double?". Speaking of Nordic music, Sweden is obviously the guiding light. Finland is probably a bit of a dark closet of the bunch. At least has been that in the past. Documentary about Michael Monroe has been running on Finnish TV this week, and it addresses 'the best kept secret' thing and difficulty of making it outside Finland. The funny thing is that there are US musicians, who know Finnish music, while the general US public not so much: "PEACEMAKER 1x5 Hanoi Rocks scene", "Hanoi Rocks - 11Th Street Kids Live 1981", "Michael Monroe -dokumenttielokuva tulossa elokuvateattereihin" and "Michael Monroe - Ballad Of The Lower East Side (Official Music Video)". Dave Grohl knows at least one other Finnish band: "Nirvana - "Run Rabbit Run" Live 10/30/88 Olympia, WA" and "Smack: Run Rabbit Run (live 1984)". Smack toured in the US, but In one of his documentaries, Grohl told how in their youth they used to order small-label and self-published albums from overseas. Has Rob come across this band? They were popular in the Nordics and knocking doors in the Europe: "Shell Super Oil mainosfilmi, esittää: Hurriganes", "Making of Roadrunner - Day One", "Hurriganes-Road Runner" and "Hurriganes - Get On", Here's a movie and a band based on the joke of making it in the America from Finland. The band ended up performing in the MTV Music Awards in 1994: "Leningrad Cowboys Go America (1989) Trailer", "Leningrad Cowboys Go America - Do you have rock'n'roll?", "Leningrad Cowboys - Sweet Home Alabama (1993)" and "Leningrad Cowboys Total Balalaika-Gimme all your loving". Before there was Leningrad Cowboys, the core members had a band called Sleeper Sleepers: "Sleepy Sleepers - Highway (1982) HQ". Since those days Finnish bands have toured the US and gained popularity there. Here's couple of those bands. Quentin Tarantino is fan of the first one: "Laika & the Cosmonauts - Sauna-Soul" (original song: "Soulset - Sauna Soul"), "James Hetfield with Apocalyptica One LIVE San Francisco" and "PANTERA "Cemetery Gates" Gone Polka by STEVE 'N' SEAGULLS | Metal Injection". And some bands have toured in Finland: "Lemmy from Motörhead vs. Hurriganes" and "Albert Järvinen & Lemmy "Countdown" (1984)". Metallica toured in Finland, and maybe got a riff for 'Enter Sandman" from Stone: "Metallica & Stone Rockstop 1988 (Finnish television)" and "Stone - Get Stoned". This: "Red Hot Chili Peppers talks about Finnish fans" and "RHCP interview Provinssirock '88". When Faith No More toured in Finland in 1992, they listened to this CMX album on their tour bus: "CMX - Pyhiinvaeltaja". Billy Gould ended up producing an album for CMX. Then there's popular bands (in Finland) you probably haven't heard of. This one was listed as such in Rolling Stone Magazine: "melodikakofoniko Eppu Normaali - Kitara, taivas ja tähdet".

    If you want a voice with more of an edge, you want more Marco and you want a heavy tune then I have two recommendations for you;
'Romanticide' from Wacken 2013 festival, or 'Yours Is An Empty Hope' from Wembley 2015.
Both feature the current singer Floor Jansen who has one of the most versatile voices in the world. Floor can be Operatic like Tarja (you just heard her), she can sing in a Pop style, a Metal style, a Classical style, or all the way down the scale to Death Metal growls!

Autotune and it's brother simple pitch correction came around in 1998. Cher-Believe was the first song to feature it. Once that happen, the floodgates opened. Being that this is 2004, that is MORE than enough time. NOW, that's not to say that Tarja or Marko can't sing their faces off! Because they most assuredly can.
