I think there was no need to fumble between smooth and serrated blades on your Wave. The serrated blade has jimping (the little bumps) on the spine of the blade, just above the thumb hole, where they should have been put on the serrated blade of the FREE.

Genesis It’s annoying to have to take off my gloves just to feel for jimping. I feel the single raised edge is more up my alley.

I have the Wave, the Charge and the Free P4. I carry the Free P4. It is so much easier to get to all the tools. Granted I got 30% off retail. I love the sharp edge on the front of the serrated knife. The scissors actually work. The older models were such a pain to get to in the inside tools with scissors interfering. . It is easy to get used where the knives and scissors are. The tool release tabs work so much better than the old method. Much quicker. I have never used the silly little bits in the other tools. I like having the screwdrivers handy and have many drivers that work so much better. The Free P4 is a fantastic EDC tool.

I’ve retired my Surge as the usability of the P4 makes older models feel like dinosaurs. Yes I’d like a bit driver but now that the ARC is out there’s options. Don’t get me wrong I still love my Surge but for 90% of the time I’m carrying the P4

My fav of all time is surely the Charge Ti, which gets the most carry time, but I will spend some time with this P2. I am just happy that Leatherman continues to offer new models so my addiction can continue to grow! Will be ordering a P4 very soon. Great review sir!

So I purchased the Wave 5 years ago and just used it everyday being an elevator / escalator constructor the only feature I like with the P4 is the one hand operation otherwise my Wave blows the P4 hands down. I like the Screwdriver bits you can put in the Wave. The P4 has just a flimsy Philips and like 4 flat blades. Anyhow still Cary the Wave everyday and well just grab the P4 for show. So I really say all show no go

It's very appealing, but my surge gives me more flexibility. In the free you are stuck with the tools. In the surge i can put whatever i want in the t shrink socket of the file. The same with the screwdriver, the extension and the bits.

    • @DragonHeart53
      @DragonHeart53 5 років тому

then definitely stick with the one you like. The Free is meant as a test bed for going back to the general consumer type multi-tool, but with a new design that makes it have greater ease of use. It's for quick jobs that a person can use it on the job and get a task done quickly without having to fiddle with extra bits and pieces to personalize for a job. Generally speaking, a multi-tool isn't meant to replace an entire tool box of different tools, while it's nice to have the extra bits and the extender, it's not going to do the same job as a full sized tool cause you have to play with so many little pieces. it's not like you're going to have them all with you at any given time while carrying the multi-tool around.

    Here’s what I like about the P4:
It can be opened one handed, the tools are accessible very easily, and it looks very nice. The pliers are good and strong, the knives are very sturdy and very capable, and it’s a very interesting concept.
    Here’s what I don’t like:
Most of the tools on it are basically useless, like the ruler and file, being too small to do much of anything with accept threaten the object with a slight tickle.
Overall, my thoughts on the tool are:
If you already have a Wave, don’t buy the P4 as a replacement. While the P4 and p2 are very nice multitools, with a very interesting way of doing things, I’m probably gonna hold off until they have a One handed opening version with a more specific demographic, or until they make a “Gen 2” that addresses most of the complaints (around the community).
P.S: why are there 4 different flathead screwdrivers?

As nice as the Free P4 is I am glad I chose the Surge. The ability to swap between files and saws is nice and the ability to swap the bits (especially with the extender) makes it the perfect tool for my job. I have to carry all my tools with me all day every day so having the leatherman 44 piece bit set make up most of my bit kit made them nice and compact. The rest of the setup goes in an electricians tool pouch with other accessories like a ratchet, specialty sockets, etc. I cant imagine lugging around all those individual tools.

Collecting multitools is hobby of mine. I love it. I currently have 27.
I've genuinely noticed that a _LOT_ of people get very "clingy". They've grown fond of their current tool. It becomes like a child of theirs. They defend it like a parent.
It's perfectly fine to really like your tool. I mean, duh, that doesn't need to be pointed out. Wave, surge, center drive, swisstool, whatever. Cool.
But when a person gets "clingy" and defensive though... that's just ... unnecessary. And stupid. You can talk to a person with these kind of irrational defense goggles, and no other approaches will ever make sense, no different insights can ever be made, and they simply _can't_ see other tools and "get it". Only their "child".
Honestly that's real silly... A lot of this is subliminal too, so you may or may not realize you're doing it.
You're missing out on _just enjoying_ a lot of different techniques, approaches, and clever designs. That's it. No defense going on. Just observation and no agenda.
I like the free p4. I think it's great. I also have a wave, a charge+ and a charge tti (plus the bit kits, extender, etc). All different variants of the same thing. Seriously, I know everything about them, right down to how each feels. They're great, most people know that, but I also don't get "clingy" about them. There are other tools with good designs. The free is another one with another approach, focused around _usability._ THAT is the core concept this whole tool is designed around. If you don't get that, then it won't click.
Asking if this is a wave is stupid, it isn't. Asking what it is _on it's own accord_ is better. That's what I'm trying to point out.
(I don't work for or get anything from Leatherman. Just a rugged alaska nut, with a fetish for multitools)
(I'd share my thoughts on the free, but I've rambled on too long. If you want my exact thoughts on the free P4, or curious what tools I have, let me know below)

@@brodieroberts5187 Exactly. A multi-tool is for a quick job when to do something when it'd be too much of a hassle to run to a tool box to get your a basic screwdriver or pliers/wire cutters. It's handy, and it does the job for a lot of day to day things, But it's not for doing everything. You'll still need full sized proper tools for a job, it's not going to replace everything.
The kind of people this is for, are the people who want to just get something done quickly and easily, and may not always have easy access to full sized tools. Someone always on their feet in a packing job, home shop, or business.

I'm not going to fix eye glasses, or take apart and fix an entire applience with it. I cut boxes, tape and rubber with the knife, and pull things appart with the pliers, and occationally used the screw drivers to tighten a loose screw on something I'm using in the store and it does all that I need it for. I'm getting the Free P4 myself because I want that ease of use, and the warranty cause i'm using it on the job, and the cheap one could break if I use it too much.

The Wave has replaceable wire cutters now so, for $40 more you get a slightly bigger tool shorter main cutting tools no reversible micro/medium, drivers and you lose an actually useful file for some negligibly better ergo's...If you want to spend an extra $40 just get the charge+ it's the wave with a 154cm blade and a gut hook on the back of the serrated blade.

the point of free isn't some dick measuring contest, it's not "oh, my knife is .234324 of an inch longer, and I have a gut hook for if I want to look inside of some roadkill on my way to work!", the point of the free is the EASE of use, rather than multitude of uses, and emphasis on the TRUE one handed operation, for ALL the tools. For an EDC multi tool, I think the free would be my number one choice from now on. And let's be honest here, why would you need something like a gut hook on a multi tool? If you're out hunting, you're gonna have an actual hunting knife, which is far more suited to the job, at a fraction of the price, and if that longer blade or reversible screwdriver is really that important, just go and get the actual tool, instead of acting like a pocket knife is a replacement for an actual tool kit.

Looks prettier than the Wave... but the design of the Wave/Surge/Charge with a bit kit.. you have everything you'll need. I use my bit kit often, and that useless ruler and small file isnt much of an upgrade. All it has going for it is one hand open operation, magnetic design. I'd honestly still choose a Charge TTI+ or Skeletool CX for lightweight EDC. I carry a separate file in my bag and my work requires the pliers and various cutting tools much more than it ever needs screwdrivers, so I can live without the big file and the bit kit - though I'd have preferred they were there of course. The ruler is too short, the awl isnt pointy, and the file doesent look nearly long enough for anything serious, plus it doesn't have that dark metal color indicative of a properly hard file. I think the new form factor is great, but they really missed the mark on tool usability. Im sticking with my charge+

The 3 of the 4 extra tools are screwdrivers and the P4 is not bit kit compatible. I’ll take my Wave+ (replaceable wire cutter is the difference to your Wave) over the P4 any day just for Bit Kit compatibility.

I was trying to flick off that one hair on the top right at the beginning of the video until it went away.

Zone07 Oh! That’s not a hair, it’s the pull cord for my shades tucked into my curtains. If you watch the end it’s there too. I do that because my cats mess with it too much so I hide it. Lol. Thanks for pointing it out. I’ll try to hide it better.

I’ve owned both. The Wave automatically loses in my book because it always pinched my hand between the blade and the file/saw. That being said, I wish the P4 was just a fully one handed version of the Super Tool 300 because the short file is useless, the awl having a driver on it makes no sense whatsoever, a small ruler is pointless, and multitool size scissors are worthless for anything more than trimming stray strings off your clothes

Absolutely. As mentioned in the video I was thinking about the K4X but the combo blade is putting me off.

@@ChrispyThings I wonder if the blades themselves will be replaceable or interchangeable with each other. Maybe theres different options available for the k series. I'd really hope so because that would be a no brainer buy from me. Heres hoping!

There’s gimping on the serrated knife side of the wave, the standard blade does not, that’s how you know what “side” you’re on.

I would imagine that the magnets collect an enormous amount of pocket crud over time. Makes me wonder about the durability of the P2/P4. Love the vid but I think I will be buying another Wave.

    • @ChrispyThings
      @ChrispyThings  5 років тому

I keep it in the case it came with and haven’t had any issues with crud in the magnets yet

Chrispy Things that is good. I am not able to carry a belt holster for my current Wave and it collects a fair amount of pocket crud/lint. I use a bit of compressed air to clean it out. I was trying to invision how that would work with the P2/P4. I was really excited about the release awhile back and love the idea. Time will tell though.

themasterhammer After using it for a while now it’s still my go to multi tool. I just wish the metal file was longer. And no interchangeable bit driver! Ugh
