      Yer. seems a bit of a gimmick really. the OHT is better as a one handed tool (as the name implies) and has spring pliers, which I'm shocked haven't made it onto their new "revolutionary" models. The easy open tools where the bit I thought was best, but causes issues as you say. I'd like to see then introduce handle tools that are free swinging when you depress the tool unlock catch on the wave, meaning they'd be locked in place both open and closed.

      @frederickj.7136 5 років тому +1

      Re: Suggestions for S30V (*and* D2, etc.)... Just a pretty bad idea, IMO. Why would you sacrifice toughness, resistance to blade edge chipping, and ease of repair and maintenance for enhanced abrasion resistance on a moderately hard use, *occasional* (if, by some measures, fairly frequent) use type of multitool??!
      If you're going to be cutting up yards & yards of dirty carpet or stacks of boxes, and you're going to choose a *multitool* for that kind of job (?!), I might infer you still have a lot to learn about craftsmanlike efficiency and choosing the right tool for the job.
      Not picking on you, Paul. You've got lots of company here also mentioning S30V. All of you might benefit from some further research... and ask yourself: Why would cousin alloy S35VN need to have been developed in the first place as an *explicitly* more practical alternative -'upgrade' to S30V for mostly *light duty, EDC pocket clip folders* for average users (or just barely "users") among, specifically, mostly knife hobbyists? Do you grasp my point?
      P.S.- Regarding others' suggestions for an upgraded alternative alloy...: "D2"... really??! These guys think a semi-stainless or non-stainless blade alloy makes sense on this kind of tool? You're gonna rinse, wipe down, and oil regularly, immediately after use... like some knife hobbyist-collector showing his love for an object of devotion? Seriously?
      I concede that if you can live with some pitting, corrosion, and maybe, some oxidation product schmutz rubbing off now and then onto a work object, you *might* not care about my caveat. But why would you *want* to take on that compromise when there are numerous cost effective 'stainless' (

    • @youtubevoice1050
      @youtubevoice1050 5 років тому +1

      Frederick J. I agree, it shouldn't be an expensive super steel, but there are better options than 420. At least some of the tools such as blades, files, saws, scissors and similar ones should be 440 C or some other steel you mentioned.

    • @frederickj.7136
      @frederickj.7136 5 років тому

      I think the main deficit in steel selection and heat treatment with respect to the other tools would be use for the file(s). I recently got into Swiss Army knives for the purpose of having a versatile, cost effective (yet stylish and fun) second knife option on hand to *complement* my main EDC folder of the day. Relatively weighty, pliers-centric multitools are not what I myself need (semi-retired, tools at home).
      What I have noted after extensive trawling through eBay auction listings, and examining my own purchases, is a pretty conspicuous lack of evidence for concern about how Victorinox and Wenger's tools (*and* blades) might be expected to hold up against serious damage or meaningful compromise in performance ••. Therefore, I can't be very critical of Leatherman's choice for the other tools... though, of course, unusually hard users of their multitools might have a different perspective.
      I am rather put off, though, about how much silliness has been spouted in this thread over "420", as if argument against naïvely impractical suggestions for an "upgraded" blade alloy (M390, Cruware, Elmax -- seriously?! 😖) made one at once an *advocate* for the 420-something Leatherman has chosen. Who is saying with any enthusiasm that they're giving a big 👍 to that alloy over any number of other possible low cost steel options available? Some coherent logic please, folks (?). Sigh...
      •• Re: the SAKs... I *have* noted in my unscientific sampling one hard to miss regularity -- that older examples tend to function more smoothly, with better characteristics of back spring tension, plus their having a superior level of finish in certain respects compared to present production. I'm happy as a clam when newer is better; but I gotta call 'em as I see 'em, and in the case of longtime produced SAKs, I wasn't exactly surprised by my experience. I got pretty lucky, BTW.

    • @youtubevoice1050
      @youtubevoice1050 5 років тому

      Frederick J. Yes, super steels are not cost-effective (and neither are they needed) on multi-tools. A SAK is my preferred all-round tool since childhood. Besides the occasional bend knife tip or broken spring on the scissors there was one other incident that made me question the steel choice. The screwdriver was messed up by a screw that was apparently made out of superior steel. I was a little heartbroken tbh, for that screwdriver had a nearly universally useful size/ shape. For the most part these steels will suffice, but I'd like to see some upgrades, even just selectively for specific tools.

      @wpenman3 5 років тому +2

      Yeah I get that but but they run S30V in the Charge TTI. And if that is overkill why not then meet in the middle with something like 154CM. They run that in the Skeletool CX. Maybe even just have blade upgrades options for those that want them.

      @@Rushil69420 I gotta say, when you make a knife like the K series, you need good steel because the people who buy knives are much more steel conscious. Leatherman has shitty steels on all of their knives/multitools, their simple upgrade is 154CM, which is fine, but 154CM is more difficult to sharpen than CPM-S30V. I don’t think you took into consideration that Leatherman isn’t just going to be handing out shut heat treats like they’re coupons.

    Before I leave the house each day I pat myself down asking the same question. Phone, wallet, keys, and leatherman? It's been over 15 years and three leathermans later I am on the Wave. One thing remained the same....my original black leather case. Until last week when I had to retire it because I was afraid my Wave was going to fall out. That old ragged case not only was a badge of honor but had soul. I would never carry a nylon case and wish you made a leather case even as an upgrade option. I think you fail to realize how important that element is. After scouring etsy I finally found a guy who made a leather case that was built with the same quality as my original. Last week I wore it for the first time and the only regret I have is the brass button doesn't say leatherman and there is no gold "Leatherman" scrolled horizontally down the face. Love the innovation and evolution but don't forget the soul that leather offers.

    Interesting, but magnets mean it's out as an option for folks who work on electronics, medical equipment, etc that is sensitive. I suppose in fairness, it's not going to be their main tool, but I use my original Wave an awful lot even with a proper tool kit. I REALLY wish there was an upgrade option for a better steel blade. 3v would be my preference in a utility blade. If Leatherman TRUELY wants to field a multi-tool "game changer", then they need to have a fully interchangeable, customizable tool where you pick your chassis, then choose what tools you want from pick lists for each location. Something that the end user can order replacement parts to either repair, reconfigure or rebuild at home, with the option to send it back in to have the work factory done. Until then, I really don't see any "game changers" in the Multitool world since we expect the sort of new tricks for an old dog progression of new models with technical and aesthetic changes, but basically offering the same functionality as far as resources at hand, and a "take it or leave it" prepackaged component set.

    What would be a BIG innovation would be to be able to replace individual tools or maybe select from an array of options so the user can configure it the way they want.
    And, to be able to tighten the handle/pliers joint.

    I'm definitely going to check them out. Thanks for the heads-up. But I have to say: I've been carrying one or another Leatherman for decades, and all of them ( yes, ALL of them) are openable with one hand. When you get them you invest a little time working some oil in and slightly loosening the pivot points for the pliers. Very slight loosening, working it a few dozen times with some oil and presto! None of them has needed any further adjustment after many years of use.

  • @diezelle57
    @diezelle57 5 років тому +135

    Expert advice.
    Leatherman has bet on the easy opening of the pliers and easy access to the tools.
    I do not think that speed of access to tools should take precedence over functionality.
    All this does not add features, features as obvious as expected. In addition, the blade and bit adapters are gone.
    In terms of easy opening of the pliers, we will think about the opening (almost) as easy of PowerLock or PowerAssist of SOG.
    Side holster, the offer becomes more and more indigent in the image of the competition.
    As far as steel quality is concerned, I imagine that better equipped models will be distilled afterwards, just to increase sales.
    It's ingenious, it's clever but it does not seem to meet the demand of demanding users.
    And I add, as one speaker pointed out, that with all these magnets, all the metal particles will tend to agglomerate on and in the multi-tool.

      Yeah, I'm in some agreement here. I didn't know the bit adapters have been removed. That makes it much less appealing to me as an HD tool and makes it more like a Squirt with big pliers LOL.
      --- I think these tools are aimed at soft grey Urbanites who don't want to scuff up their pedicure. Easy opening one handed is nice, but the fact that its done with magnets...Hmm.
      --- K tool is going to sell well, but I won't buy one because of the crappy blade steel which has always been a Leatherman weakness.
      --- Finally, I HATE the new sheath color, and I've always thought the Leatherman sheaths were crap, but this is a new low. Proves to me that the new tools are for gray side-walk people.

      @@Googalite Thank you for your opinion.
      But I have to correct you on the following points:
      - Leatherman frequently uses 154CM and S30V,
      - the Leatherman sheaths were, with those of Victorinox, the best designed, with a lot of variation, unlike those of Gerber and SOG but, it is true, Leatherman did not understand the interest to continue to propose sheaths to five compartments even though he finally realized that it needed a specific housing for the extender :)

      I run a surge but those cutters refuse to cut fine wire, the width of the pliers tips is too narrow for use,and they will bend aside from eachother when working, the small flat blade they put in around the time they removed the spectacle screwdriver is useless, I never once used the spectacle screwdriver on glasses, but it had a daily use in other ways on appliances, these guys are losing their direction. You don’t own a knife to show it to people. I don’t like where they are going with the longer screwdriver bits in terms of shape, it renders them useless to actually undo recessed screws, they could have punched a 1/4” hex into those tools to allow bits to be used like the leatherman crunch... I don’t see the competition doing things better, but to put out piles of inadequate tooling that you can show people. isn’t going to see great things...think about the leatherman tread, no magnet on that, might have been usefull... put a 1/4” ratchet on that, could have made it a realistic screwdriver, even allowing your own bits to fit the sides of the tread and stay locked in there could have been something, instead you make it with none of that. My skeleton stays well hidden from sight as it twists too much to be useful, the crunch has 3 flat blade screwdrivers on it, fit a bit holder to it. Make the cutters actually cut wire, on all your models. Fire the guy that designed the signal, and the team that thought a whistle was a nice touch on it too.

People want "Cost Effective" steel, and 420HC fits the bill, so there is still a chance we're getting decent blades, it's just a good question whether or not this is actually good 420 or crappy 420.

      Bud The Cyborg i'm people, i'm a multiple leatherman owner, i don't care about cost effective, i want/need better steel, so add me to the 0.001% lol not sure if you read the comments section, but half the replies are "ewww 420 steel" so i'm not sure where you're getting your stats from (probably your ass) but rest assured, the people want better steel ;)

      Bud The Cyborg i think watching this video means you're interested in leathermans... i doubt they're investing money in reps and booths at major events and take the time to give interviews with one of the biggest online knife distributors in the states just for a chance at maybe reaching 0.001% of potential customers. this video has gotten a quarter million views within a week, how many people do you realistically think are buying leathermans if a quarter million people is only 0.001% of their market? again i think your made up stats are vastly skewed. i've owned a dozen leathermans in the past, i currently have 4 on rotation, i've also bought at least a dozen as gifts, if i'm not their target demographic then they're doing a really crappy job. but anyways none of this changes the fact that according to most opinions (including my own) that a steel upgrade would equate to more sales.

      I'm sure they'll come out with a replaceable blade with better steel like they did with the skeletool, or a "different" tool like the charge ti vs wave, which comes with a better blade.

    Not gonna lie, in my opinion seems super gimmicky. I love OHT tools, but flipping a tool seems like a huge safety issue. The price tags on both of those tools at 120 and 80 can get you a brand new wave, which in my opinion is the best tool on the market. I beat the piss out of my wave, and that thing is finally to the point where I'm looking for a new tool. Mind you I bought a wave 9 years ago, and it's always been on my belt since. The little tools are kind of cool, but basically it's Leathermans take on a SAK, with a higher price tag. The only pro I can see on the new line, again in my opinion, is everything is available without the need to open the tool itself. But Gerber did that already with the suspension, which is also way cheaper. Sure it's not 420 steel, but even 420 isn't the best steel.

    I'll be honest...i was really hoping that Gerber's 'Center Drive' was going to push Leatherman in the direction of *industry standard 1/4 bit drivers.*
    These new ones are neat, i guess, but they dont really solve any problem (for me at least), and the tool selection on them looks like something i would get in their budget line [Wingman/Sidekick/Rev]. Not very impressive looking, just different.
    Being able to flip my plier open is cool, but not really some big problem (again, for me, calm down), and i really dont have a problem getting to the little tools on any of my other LM's.
    Im really not trying to knock their stuff, i do think they are neat, and if they offer them cheaper than the Wave/Charge/Surge..than they might start to make more sense to me.
    I just think the *industry standard bit drivers* was a legit problem, that would have been cool to see Leatherman, the masters of multitools, to solve, and not secede that territory to Gerber.

      @@loki8284 I literally use almost every tool on my Wave+ & Surge, all the time. Great tool set for me. But Leatherman had a real opportunity to upgrade their Wave/Charge/Surge series to 1/4 bit drivers...instead of.... *this*.
