  • Sarge hits the road on the Harley-Davidson X440 in the wake of Triumph Speed 400's success to see how it stacks up and if it all it can gain any groud on its British rival especially with the bump in its price tag even before the delivery of the first motorcycle.

I think x440 is an excellent bike that ONLY looks slightly bad when compared to Speed 400 which I think is once in a decade unicorn kind of bike.
Also, I am sure the current issues with bike of quality & deisgn will be fixed in its next version like Nightster 440 which will have more traditional Harley styling and better branding.

Bro let's talk about present.. future everything will be fine tuned, even triump will be fine tuned for that matter.. is it a better buy now or speed 400 thts the question.. bcz Harley is little costlier and in terms of looks, finish and performance triump is better is what I feel as I test rode it.. but speed 400 feels a little smaller

Short, crisp and fantastic review Sarge! As for the X440, I feel Hero and Harley wanted to pack more features to outclass the segment and in that pursuit their quality took a back step. Not something that Triumph did with the Speed 400 (this is just my thoughts on the bikes)

Triumph Speed 400 will be available in most of the states in India in a price of 2.8 lakhs+ onroad except few states where road taxes are pretty high. But the Harley in fact which I feel more of a expensive Hero product now starts at 2.8 lakhs+ ex showroom.
And now I feel how can Semi Urban India meet this price quoted by Hero-Harley despite a better class leading product already available at mariginally lower price. The pricing needed to be sensible to capture Tier 2 and 3 cities crowd. But they just failed to deliver what Bajaj Triumph gave us.

    Nice bike and review!
I own and ride a RE Classic 500.
I took a test ride of the Triumph Speed 400 and I was very very impressed by the fact that it was exactly like a Triumph is expected to be. Extremely refined, very powerful absolutely a hoot to ride. But and this is a big one- at the same time I had a feeling that this bike- the Speed 400 was not for me! It does not calm your nerves when you ride it like the RE Classic 500 does.
With all the built quality issues and reliability issues, I would still choose the 500 over the Speed 400.
I have not taken the test ride of the X440 but I think it is much closer in every way to Classic 500. They are absolutely very closely matched.
And that is why I want you to make a comparison review of the two- X440 and Classic 500.
I am ready to lend my bike for the comparison ;).

Yesterday I visited one of Triumph showroom to take test ride of Speed 400, it was rush as it was weekend, I filled form submitted my driving license and waited around 1 hour for my turn. I thought let us utilise my time to watch other models of Triumph, but when I observed a behaviour which I heard multiple times for special treatment to cheap versions of big brands like Triumph, Harley ... And I strongly felt it was not a welcome but just a liability for staff. I could not manage to take test drive as it was taking much time and I hand another responsibility to attend so I took my back my license and came out from showroom without test ride, but one thing was very clear that you will not get treated as premium even if you are with premium brand but non premium models, it was in discussion from long time but I strongly felt it , by the bike feedback from other riders were amazing.

Excellent review of both Triumph 400 and Harley 440. Been hooked onto your channel since your Scrambler 1200 review. 1200 review reminded me of Steve McQueen motorcycle scene from The Great Escape and for some weird reason 1200 has just that retro look which hooked me to it. Alas I couldn't afford it but here comes the Speed 400 . I am no enthusiast , had sold my Solid commuter unicorn 5 yrs back and especially at age of 44 and after recovering from back issues a spark is rekindled . BUT I'm confused, considering the suspension and overall seating comfort between the HD 440 and Tr 400. You see i commute ' off-road 'on the tarred roads between Mumbai and Thane. Could you or anyone advise?

your comparison video is not clear in one aspect. That is torque. Does Speed 400 has upper feel in torque delivery (in all rev range) than x440 in city limits? As x440 is said to be live on (90% TORQUE ) on 2000 rpm in paper. But, because of weight and tuning, (and also some unknown factors ) the Speed 400 defeats X 440 in torque and top speed it seems! ( or, I have read it everywhere)
So, the buyer ends up with x440 just for HD name,(with meh kind of fit and finish, little number of service stations!) that is funny.

Great review, just wasn't sure about your comment riding in 3rd gear in city traffic. Are you saying there isn't enough torque available in that situation?

Most long stroke engines can easily chug along in the third gear in the city but with the Harley i found myself having to feather the clutch to ride in the 3rd gear in the city despite it making 34nm torque at 2k rpm.

I don't understand the comparison between Speed and HD. Apart from the launch dates, the bikes are worlds apart. Triumph is much smaller and delivers it's power in a different manner. HD is imposing. I prefer the former but if I wanted something bigger, Speed would not even feature in my mind.

But the elephant in the room.. it's look, especially tier-2&3 cities, where looks is one of most important buying factor.. The only thing I could see making this bike sell ( as compared to speed400) is the lack of Triumph dealerships and the poor condition of existing dealerships where they are already trying to loot customers!! XR1200X was not a good choice to base their mass selling on. V-Rod or infact street rod based design would've been better.

Good review on the X440 Sagar! Having met you at DRT 2023, we know you are very expressive and focus a lot on the bike itself rather than the brand or its lifestyle. Which helps! As we can rely on your experience on how the bike is and I must say people can take your word for it.
What I think now about the X440 is it's an average performing motorcycle, nothing "khaass/wowww". The looks for me are disappointing and the build fit and finish looks bad for a Harley. Some parts bulky, some skinny thin, so disproportionate and you didn't talk about the snake like exhaust pipe coming out of the engine and going right n left n front n back.. also saw the skinny ugly mirrors and the left mirror was cracked too.. some unnecessary tech in the bike and missing out on many Harley vibes. However, it's the bike that'll keep them alive in India and the bike isn't bad, whoever buys will ride it and enjoy, no doubt but it just isn't Harley enough but how would they know.. so it's okay 😄

I'm sure it's a great bike if you look past that rear silencer and that odd rear wheel arc. Anyone who buys it will have a good time on this Hero with a Harley badge on it. But for 2.8 ex-showroom, if you are not in a hurry, maybe wait till the RE's 450 series hits the market. They might (hopefully ) make a better low-end torque focused, more comfortable bike, in a similar price bracket.

@@MAX-xw8xq Yeah me too, But i'm hoping they would tune it to have more low end grunt, if not whats the point of having an ADV bike. That tractor like engine was one of the major reasons why H411 was a big hit worldwide. I'm hoping it to be best of both worlds with the new high revving 450. From the leaked videos, it sounds like any other normal short stroke engines...

You are missing the point that there are no choices aside from Enfield for neutral ergonomics, torquey engine with mature looks. This bike is chosen by many people over 30 and 40 who aren't athletic build and want a comfortable cruiser. Slightly rear set foot pegs and compact size in Speed 400 is a big downer for many such people.

    • @SagarSheldekarOfficial
      @SagarSheldekarOfficial  Рік тому +1

The speed 400 and the x440 have similar ergonomics and the speed 400 is based on Triumph's successful bonnie range which is esp popular in the segment you mentioned. Yes the x440 has the long stroke motor but I don't see people esp. in tier 1 cities shelling out 50k more for the Harley when the speed is a much better product overall
