I think a big factor for the increased horsepower of an oversquare engine, (or, for that matter, using more cylinders) was missed. The bigger the bore, the more area you have for valves. The more area you have for valves, the more air you can take in. The more air you can take in, the more fuel you can burn. The more fuel you can burn, the more power you can get out of your engine.
So, after a few years of no motorcycle ownership, I retired and jumped back in. I initially started riding Yamaha twins in the 1970s - the kick ass and take names performance bikes of the time. Since then I've owned Yamaha inline triples, Honda inline twins, inline V-twins, Goldwing 4 pots and 6 pots, and landed recently, after retirement, with an Indian Scout 69. What a great machine. But, I had never owned a Harley anything. The noise and vibration just seemed to be nothing I would want. But, a few weeks ago I found a 2007 Harley Fatboy with low miles and a good sound, so I added it to the stable. After a few weeks of ownership I can now say I get it. Regardless of HP, the torque of this 96 C.I. motor is intoxicating. The Scout is fun 90% of the time. The Fatboy is more fun than than that. If you've never tried a Harley . . . you should.
not how an engine works, the discplacment is equal meaning each revolution at given rpm both bring in that amount of air. the main reason indian makes more power is from head design and flow. its all in the heads.
@@AndrewUnruh it would be "volume" of air pulled into the cylinders per revolution. Each full revolution of a given cc/ci engine displaces that amount or air so a harley 96ci/1584cc engine will displace or pull in and exhaust out 96ci/1584cc of air per complete revolution and as rpm increases the fast and more air that be moved its harleys biggest downfall is lack of head design as with most Dohc or Sohc simpler for better more efficient air flow. concept is same principle for auto engines as well.
also this all changes once you use a alt fuel/ nitro, meth, eth. or move towards boost because at that point you forcing more air into the combustion chamber than what it is designed for effectively increasing the dynamic compression ratio.
Having worked in front of a camera, making my mouth seem to move at regular speed, when filming at both slowmotion and superlapse, I can not adequately stress how difficult it is to make it look like it's normal speed. Well done! (also, the penis jokes were a head above the others)
a lot of that can be for the tyre. I've had bare car wheels on balancers before to look for buckling, spun it to check for balance, and it was totally fine even though there was a slight (barely a few mm) wobble.... fit a tyre, fire the weights cannon

My first bike was a Yamaha 80. Later on in life although I owned a car I wanted a bike. I got a very used Honda Hawk 400. I paid $500 and it ran perfectly after test driving some garbage that people were trying to get rid of. Sold it for what I paid for it. All my friends went out and started to purchase Harleys. One got a new 883 Sportster the rest went bigger. Don't know the names but I remember the engine size was 1340 CCs. I decided to get another bike. This time to the Honda dealer for a new 750 in black. I only paid $2500 for this bike and it was brand new. As a matter of fact when I went to get it they did not even have one on the showroom floor I asked the salesman show it to me he brought me into the repair side and showed me that was actually in a box I believe it was on top of three other boxes. Left them a deposit came back when it was assembled. This bike was so much better then my friends bikes in every way. They could not believe what I paid until I showed up with the receipt. This was in the early 80s so don't go looking for this price now days. I see what 750 Jap bikes sell for. This bike was so good that my first NEW car was a Honda Civic. That was back in 1987. Honda when it was made in Japan. The day we swapped bikes just to see. I drove the sporster on the highway when a car cut right in front of me. Sacred me to death because what would be a very light pull on my front break did not work that way on the Harley. I had no idea that it needed to be pulled to engage. Not for me ever.
I’ve never owned a street bike before, I saw this video for the first time about 7 months ago. Just got my 2022 scout bobber. I fell in love and I bought my bike because of this video.

Primary reason for over square is to avoid excessive piston speed. The piston doesn’t outrun the combustion. It outruns the oilly good lubrication. It also gets knock on effects like more space for valves and less force on the crank from moving the piston so fast. That comes at the expensive of low speed breathability, smoothness and secondary forces but most of all a combustion chamber which we want to be round. The more surface touching the combustion those more area to lose heat through, the more difficult to get good mixing etc.
Polaris really had a great thing with Victory. I just started looking into them wanting something different and they seem to be an incredible bike. It’s a shame people like myself are finding out to late to keep the brand around.
I’ve debated whether to sell my Victory or not but it’s reliability is incredible and it just looks good. I understand why Polaris ditched Victory but I still think that was a mistake.
I have a 2015 Victory CrossCountry, brought it on multiple road trips & it never fail me. Besides normal wear & tear & periodic services nothing else needs to be done after almost 40,000km
The craziest part of the whole ordeal is that Polaris/Victory didn't even tell their dealers. I know someone that owned 3 dealerships and my dad ran one of them, I saw some guy on UA-cam talking about them shutting down production of Victory. I called my dad to ask about it, I figured it was BS. He knew nothing of it and neither did the owners. The owner called and they denied it until I sent a link to the video, then they admitted it was true.
I found out about Victory after a dealership sold a scout oht from under me. Few months later and i became the proud owner of an Octane. And a year after that, i bought a Vic cross country. Amazing bikes and love every bit of them

Great stuff as usual, please make one for the FTR 1200s
That's where we need a compromise. I believe we'll find one. Yamaha and especially Kawasaki are well on their way. Although Kawasaki thinks people who want a sexy looking cafe racer also want detuned performance. Big mistake. I'll wait.

Harley in the early 2010s: "Get rid of Buell and Vrod no one wants to buy a torquey sportbike and a fast cruiser"
Harley in 2020: "If only we had someone who knew how to build a torquey sportbike or a fast cruiser"
Hilarous.
Biggest mistake Harley did was killing Buell. It gave them a line that they could sink R&D in. And make modern, fun bikes. They didn't understand that attracting different buyers = MORE BUYERS.
@@leftcoaster67 it’s unfortunate really. I have a Buell and love it. I think they were truly ahead of their time. I’m still saying it to this day if they came out with the exact same bikes today they’d sell great
Buell was a flop because it tops out at 112mph and is horrible to work on...
No one wanted them... because for a sportbike you need to go faster... and lose the weight... H-D failed to deliver, so the product went no where..
V-rods are awesome and would sell, if they didn't scare the hell out of 3/4 of the H-D buyers who are old men that couldn't handle them...
Like the same guy that keeps telling me to slow down on my SV650 coming down the road, when I am doing the speed limit... and I am older than he is...
He don't know what a bike is capable of, he's only had a H-D couch, and anything else he is terrified of... and because I wear full gear and tinted visor, he probably thinks I'm some kid and he's trying too be my dad... His H-D is always in his shed when I go by every day, putting 20,000 kms a season, and it's always there when I return at night...
Some people like to sit, shine and admire, my enjoyment comes from carving turns and seeing the country.

@@Joebauers2505 By same amount, do you mean same mass or same volume?
Well done!

Holy SHIT! Then I saw "Harley Davidson" on the tire, and the understanding kicked in.
a lot of that can be for the tyre.

NEW car was a Honda Civic.

I have a 2015 Victory CrossCountry, brought it on multiple road trips & it never fail me. Besides normal wear & tear & periodic services nothing else needs to be done after almost 40,000km
I really considered buying one. The only reason I didn't was due to n o ABS
Finally, the science of torque and HP explained in using chodes and slongs- well done Ryan 😎👍

Genitalia, a language we can all understand.
The information he presents is incomplete and biased.
This was a great short film! And informative. Well done.
The editing on this video needs to compete for an Oscar.
Why? There is no competition!
Who they competing against boring Revzilla and MotorcycleNews?

Uncanny.
Genius camera work aneesh
I found out about Victory after a dealership sold a scout oht from under me. Few months later and i became the proud owner of an Octane. And a year after that, i bought a Vic cross country. Amazing bikes and love every bit of them
It's why I went from a 1200 Sportster to my FTR1200s
I agree with you that a rider shouldn't be "on fire" but "ice cold" to live another day. BTW. what is the worse company Indian or Harley?
FtR is amazing, test rode one and would maybeike to own one, but Iove my 1200 Sporster C sooo much. I love it so much it hurts sometimes and I can't get rid of it.
@@worldhello1234 That depends wether you mean opinion or statistics. I love the Harley Davidson brand but Indian is a better company
and that's why i went from my fire blade to a 1200 roadster :)
Indian is an awesome addition to the polaris family. I love my Roadmaster.
These are really masterpieces of the genre. I especially appreciate how you avoid acting _as though_ physics is interesting and simply show how interesting physics is. So much STEM outreach effort would benefit from this pov.
his videos would be perfect to show to my students I just need to cut out the innuendo in case the management walk in...
The only channel where I watch the video more than once since they are always filled with subtle messages, practical physics lessons, and slight of hand humor. And the video production quality is out of this world. Netflix should call Ryan et al and offer a series special!
My God, the production quality on this video!
Wait, how the hell were you lip sycning your voice while being in slow mo, that took a lot of shots and a lot of thinking to get right.
And then the same thing but with the video sped up.
Amazing.
record the audio separately and make Ryan learn it on play back it at double speed.. or something like that anyway.
Also the last scene...wow
Figure out exactly how much you'll slow the video, listen to the audio sped up the same amount to compensate, then speak exactly as fast so when slowed the lips match original audio. Same but in reverse for the sped up version where he speaks slower
Guys... I know how this works, I'm not stupid.
All I want to say is that he wanted and had the patience to do that.
You don't see that very often on YT
Dude, what kind of morons are running the CBC that they haven't offered you a shot at producing your own motorhead show? You are like a one man Top Gear for motorcycles. (Although I am sure you must have a talented team you rely on for help)
Words #5 to 9 in your comment...nuff said!
Keep doing what you're doing . . . free of all parasites . . . you're doing great and have no one to answer to.
@Bradley Walker no disrespect to your comment, but you are sounding like a H-D rider. Wanting the old (CBC) to be good again.
Ryan is much, much better than Top Gear ever was. Equating him to those 3 pricks is insulting.
@@gustavmeyrink_2.0 If you are talking about the U.S top gear I agree. The british top gear is easily on par.
The Buell XB was making 103HP using a Harley Sportster 1200cc engine platform. That was in 2003. I do not know what the problem is over at Harley.
and just like that, I miss my lightning...
Same problem with the music industry. They're too busy trying to figure out how to get back into the past and not on how to be relevant now and in the future.
And the problem, for both started a couple decades ago...with nothing learned in that time.
You have to remember too that Honda was making 50hp more with 200cc less and a lighter engine at the same time. Even with all the engineering Buell had it was just lipstick on a pig
@@ajpowers7842 The point is Buell made 103HP out of 1.2 liters in 2003 and Harley is making 74hp out of 1.6 liters in 2020.
what about the people who turbo'd their HD engines or maybe swapping them out with S&S ones
Writing, delivery and cinematography are all pristine. Love this channel.
At 27 years old I've been desperately needing a new bike for like 4 years now. I've been looking at cruisers so that I don't lose my licence on a Gixxer but the severe lack of power is a downer.
Didn't know that Victory bikes were engineered to follow a performance mindset more closely. Thanks for showing me this new thing, now I can go lose my licence with a clean conscience 🙏
Just get a kawasaki vulcan and move on
Yamaha V-max
I'm a huge Indian motorcycle fan actually. Love em! Will own one soon.
Did u buy one?
We have three. 16 Scout 60, a ‘17 Roadmaster Icon and a ‘22 Super Chief Limited 116. Love em
I’ve got a Scout Twenty. I’d definitely recommend getting an Indian!!! Lots of fun and beautiful bikes. I get a lot of lean and knee down out of it.
@@hectichive889 I’m amazing by how good my scout handles. I swear it handles better then some sport bikes
I ended up with a BSM Scout Rogue a couple months ago. Excellent bike, even better with some upgrades though.
The end... when you went backwards to the FTR... 😭 so good. So so good.
This really is some of the best content on UA-cam, feels like a full on TV production and it’s completely free.
The video editing is insane! All these videos are so incredibly well done! Favorite UA-cam channel
Stunning production, top shelf indeed. So much like the cycle magazines of 30 years ago, an understanding of tech and marketing all wrapped up in a visual delight.
Awesome job!
Brilliant and timeless
I absolutely love that he was talking faster or quieter for the slow motion or fast motion parts so he was talking normally while moving slowly
The quality of your videos never ceases to amaze me. Well done
Favorite line: "What a chode"
Thanks ryan you made my day.
Yoh, it should be a capital "C"
RIP Victory you were ahead of your time and I wish you were still around one of the best
For cruisers, victory is the only brand I look at. Tons of power, awesome styling and the used market has some amazing options for fantastic prices.
Still lovin my Victory Vision. Near bullet proof trans and engine.wouldn’t trade for anything else.
Exactly. As the clip in this video said, they didn't have a heritage holing them back; they could become anything they wanted.
They are still around, in a sense. They own Indian motorcycles. Polaris purchased Indian in 2011. Polaris merged the companies because it didn't make since manufacturing two separate lines of motorcycles. The Spirit Lake IA factory, now turning out Indian Motorcycles
@@61ache It wasn't primarily because it didn't make sense, to keep both going. Marketing and management was a huge negative, and even when both Victory and Indian were producing side by side, the Indian's were outselling the Victory hand over fist, because of the brand.
Ok now we NEED a FTR 1200 review!!
Yes, this is begging for a sequel
Great! Very professional content. Informative, entertaining, relevant, well scripted, and wonderfully filmed. Reminds me of old Top Gear films.
