“What were you expecting, for him to tickle people to death?” Ok, to be fair, that sounds exactly like something the joker would do, not to mention a super disturbing way to die.
Phil Furney reminds me of that moment in the Arkham Asylum game were Joker looks like he’s about to pull out a gun, but pulls out a feather and tickles Batman instead
I don’t understand complaints about “violence” when we have Kill Bill, John Wick, Hostal.......are people serious? At least with Joker we can tell where is all this violence coming from.
sugarplumfairy20101 and umm The Surge? Which is advertised on literally everything I see.... But, I’ve heard Joker is anti-establishment minded. If that’s true, no wonder the media is telling everyone not to go see it. Never watched the Surge in its entirety but looks pretty violent to me. And how about Saw?

Right before Joaquin truly becomes Joker in the movie he says “I just had a bad day” and from Jokers monologue in ‘The Killing Joke’ he tells Batman “All it takes is one bad day”. This movie was an absolute masterpiece.
Ivin3690 When he’s sitting in Sophies living room and shes freaking out because she doesn’t know him and shes asking him to leave, the first thing he says is “I just had a bad day”
Jarrod Stowe this isn’t a glorification IMO. Nothing about it is glorious-it’s a study of it. Mental illness absolutely should be taken seriously, and at the core of Joker is a wish for society to not stigmatize people struggling with mental illness, and instead offer them the support and systems they need in order to be accepted and embraced
In my opinion, Joker was an accurate depiction of how mental illness and abuse, when left unchecked by society, can lead an individual towards committing violent and self-destructive acts.
Is because people like you!!! Look down on us!!! Yet, when we stand up for our selfs. We are seeing as the bad guys!!!! Never mess with somebody who is a loner. The like being alone. So going to prison is a luxury. And we are not crazy!!!!! We are evil too “evil laugh”
Yeah it's pathetic how angry about this movie people are, how they want to ban it. All it does is address actual problems in this world, you can meme about "this is a society" all you want but it's fucking true, basically everyone in the US who goes on a rampage has been failed by their friends, family and health care professionals who are supposed to care for them. None of those things should happen and yet in the US they do *every day*. If people are angry at this movie then their pathetic little tantrums are a complete waste of their stupid thoughts, why not put that energy towards, y'know, an actual problem. Pointing out a problem isnt agreeing with it or encouraging it.
I think not just mental illness, but anyone who have had it so bad for so long, then that one final “bad day” happened. Like with the guy from the Las Vegas Shooting.
That's a nice way to put it. I'll add that this is the best origin story that I've seen since jack Nicolas fell into a toxic vat in the Michael Keaton Batman. Plus, this was even a two for one origin story with no flash backs cause it also had Bruce Wayne's Batman origin story in it as well. I'd grown sick to death of origin stories up till now but this one was good. Plus it was a remake of taxi driver too and yet it was a remake I liked.
I'm not sure that's the moral of the story. A moral of the story, among many, is that you should not worship or turn others into icons for your cause. People are usually not who you think they are. Treating others with kindness doesn't need to be a moral of a story, it should just be.
@@wandarah this doesn't necessarily feel like a movie that has a moral or specific message in mind at all, simply a collection of situations that, when combined, can lead to the destruction of a man

as a criminology student, joker movie is a good case study of understanding the root cause of a crime, that crime isnt just a single spontaneus act, its how a series of unfortunate events and different behaviors that others resort to crimes
@@leavefollow1698 its true, there are a lot of factors why people resort to crime however little that factor may be, take for example a news a long time ago, a kid punches another kid to death even if he was just bullied once, yeah he killed him because of that but as the authority investigates it all comes down to what is happening before, the kid was molested by his uncle and was punished because his uncle said it was him who initiated the act, was punished by his dad, and was extremely bullied in his neighborhood calling him names for doing that, he lost his friends, he was on the edge of his sanity, and that one act pushes him to his limits. the reason for the crime may be just that one act but the root cause of it was a combination of misfortune that led his mind to think that it was the best thing to do.

So while you say that 02 brains are exactly the same, there are Exceptions to that rule as well. I am just kind of confused about. I didn't say one thing that was universal. I said all you need is one incident; and then I gave an example of a bullying which was a Direct response to the person I was replying to. I think the controversy around this movie is that people DO empathize with a villain and it scares them. To me the Joker is a story more about the haves and have nots. Class is a huge underpinning of this story, that value of human life and what happens when someone is stripped of their humanity by society. Those men that beat him, the ones that chased him, his possible father didn't see him as a person but as something less than human. That's what he became.
Never did scare me that I empathize with him. I don't even think he's supposed to be labeled a villain. He's an anti-hero, in classic comic book terms, and an extreme individualist in philosophical terms, that's symply disgusted with modern society. Well, of course, he's a special figure, both due to his character legacy from the comics and his individual intellectual qualities, but such people do exist, and "regular" people always play surprised when they do snap. Maybe watching the movie will create some sort of awareness.
it's manipulative, bc the people in real life who assault random people on subways, or push people onto the tracks in reality have far more in common with the joker than the wall street bros the movie portrays as the bullies of the subway. Look at the backgrounds and class of the real life violent criminals on US subways
@@mihan5660 but there is a common thread between a wall street banker who scams someone out of their retirement/home/investments and exploits loopholes and someone that pushes someone on the tracks...
@@Pookie515 I can go with that (and even worse, the Boeing execs flying the 737 max, big pharma, etc), but he only was given the gun the first place because he was victimized by children on the street; they beat him doing the same thing the wall street bros wanted to do. Furthermore, the protesters maimed cops who were trying to catch a serial murderer. Both classes have many members victimizing innocent people even in the movie, much less real life. Taking sides against the 'other' while ignoring the exact same bad behavior in your own group is very realistic, but I don't think it was supposed to be the take home message.

When you’re watching an origin movie, especially that of a villain, you have to witness their embrace of evil, even if it involves their embrace of violence. You have to witness the development of the character.

I thought the comment he wrote in his journal "the worst thing about having a mental illness is that everyone expects you to act like you don't" was a very eye opening statement.
Art Lover: it is truly a beautiful comment, and if you flip it, you’ll get Hamlet. Having several (honest; not proud), mental illnesses, I find it is like walking a tightrope on dental floss. You tell yourself to at least try, knowing you will fall, yet not knowing when or how far you’ll get. The falling part is easy. The difficult and agonizing part is not knowing which side (of sanity) you’ll land, if anyone is waiting for you, if there’s a bouncy thing (or the much easier slab of concrete) to land on, or if the floss will simply ever so easily slice your head off like a garrote...
The Purge was dripping with anti-white overtones, that's why. If The Joker was black (from the start), this would receive ABSOLUTELY universal acclaim. But he's not. He's white. The white man may find something to relate to in this, driving him to do anything other than quietly kill himself, and that is "dangerous."
the purge was directed towards a specific group. the joker represents all the weirdos and incels. the joker plot is more attainable than the purge plot. there are actually people that are alienated and angry possibly psychotic. the purge was purely fantasy.

How many sides to a story is arbitrary to the situation. There may be two, six, nine. Sometimes there's only one. It's perception through observation which determines the side. I agree with you that if anyone can't empathize with a tragic character, then they are indeed the one with societal deficiency, and should open their eyes.
There's no such thing as a bad (or good) person. There's just people who do things that other people judge as either good or bad, and no matter who you are, you will be judged as both at some point. To empathize with anyone is merely to admit that at least some part of their situation is empathetic, NOT that the sum of their actions are completely justified.

The part where his case worker informed him that the funding for their program was being cut made me think. Because it is a reality that we do not fund mental health services enough right now. In THESE times. Come on now. Think about that. Everything we're going through. Can you imagine the number of people in the US going through this pandemic, out of work, the BLM movement against police brutality and racism, a fascist president, kids being locked in cages....all these horrific things going on right now...And people can't get healthcare to treat the inevitable mental illnesses that are undoubtedly being exacerbated. Can you imagine? I remember when Trump got elected that people MOCKED the people that actually cried over it. That bothered me quite a bit...and maybe the first three years were like "okay maybe we sensationalized this a little and were scared over nothing we haven't turned into a police state yet so that's good..." and then came 2020...and to me it became clear that those peoples' fears were 100% warranted. I have no idea where we will be by next year. I hope that this year will result in some serious collective self-reflection that leads to better outcomes.

Smartest damned thing DC's done since they started their competition with Marvel's movies. Dump the "shared universe" idea. They're just shackles on the writers and it's long played out anyway. Let each film be it's own film, and not dependent upon any other. It could be both a game changer for the superhero film genre in general and for DC who may end up being more successful producing solid one-off films rather than bloated, overly-entangled sequels, prequels, crossovers, etc. I think DC knows by now that they can't successfully copy Marvel's formula, and so they're trying something they're already good at - multi-verses.
I just watched it and let me tell you, this man killed it. Ledger def would’ve been proud of this take on the joker. He created his own joker. Still the joker we know, just it’s own compared to ledger. That’s my opinion.
Totally agreed mate... Health Ledger was awesome as Joker but that was his own take, & in this film Joaquin Phoenix makes the Joker his very own. Any comparisons between the two would be silly & unfair to both these brilliant actors.

J C I feel like the filmmakers were striving to make this film very joyless, because it’s about a tragedy of someone with mental issues slowly going down a road towards violence.
J C Someone explain what was so overly-tragic about this movie? People act like youve never seen reference to child abuse, psychotic thoughts, trauma or violence on screen before.
I really loved the part where he did that thing with the thing in the thing to that guy in the place and got the thing and went to do that thing with his things or something, I can't spoil it but we all know what I'm talking about here...
Reminds me of "he only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion." By Albert Camus. A philosopher who talked alot about absurdism and nihilism. And absurdist nihilism is essentially the Joker's philosophy.
DC films always do well on their own and not connected with anything. If they continue to do character films like this, they might just find the fanbase again.
Thats what she said that’s just false that’s a nice sounding sentence But most of the time in real life trauma and metal illness doesn’t come hand in hand with intelligence or maturity
Yeah it’s okay for thousands to die for no reason in other movies but in this movie like maybe 10 people die and everyone goes to shit. (Excluding anyone who died when everything went crazy at the end
People are really easily offended these days, & feel so self important that they don't think any art should be created that they disagree with. One journalist responded to this movie saying, "I don't know why why this movie was made," as if movie makers needed to have his permission to make films.
I was blown away when I saw this movie. Honestly blown away. Everything about it. The acting, the acting, the acting, the music, the plot, how it connects with Batman, the setting, the twisted nature of it, how messed up it is, EVERYTHING. It was a perfect movie for someone like the Joker. Really a brilliant film
It probably says as much about the quality of essays being submitted these days as anything else - in years past, movies that took their subject seriously and actually had something to say about them weren't nearly as rare as they are today, but that's largely lost on those who would give Endgame a "10/10... fantastic". Movies have largely lowered themselves to find their audiences rather than challenge their audiences to do some thinking.

When watching the movie you really forget that it's a Joker movie. They did this absolutely incredibly, this movie seems alot more like a person damaged by society, and then this person realises that he gets all the attention by hurting and killing others, thinking violence is the only way to stop his pain. I agree; this Joker couldn't fight Batman... yet. There is definitely a page missing in Joker's development from the movie to that but honestly - I could totally see it; Joker going deeper into that rabbit hole and basically becoming what Ledger's Joker was.

"When watching the movie you really forget that it's a Joker movie." That actually sums up my entire problem with this movie. Too slow to get the main point across. Too much exposition into his backstory as Arthur ; and not enough screen time as the Joker. Not enough chaos and/or violence ; which is what'd you'd expect to see in a Joker movie. All in all ; the movie delivered a great message to the screen ; but unfortunately the way in which it was delivered was too slow, too boring and too bland. It's really only towards the end of the movie where things begin to speed up. I'd give it a 6/10 at most. In spite of what most people say ; this movie was far from a masterpiece.

Joker portrays “graphically” what a lot of people, it not most, want to pretend they don’t see in today’s society. This film wouldn’t have gotten the controversy it has gotten only a few years ago. We’ve become a society that wants to pretend the problems of this world don’t exist, and mental health is among the few things that we should be paying attention to the most. Personally, I think this movie was fantastic and the media wants to demonize real world problems portrayed in film.
Very well put , i like how ignorance of today's society was uncovered through this movie. Contrary to people calling it disturbing , I felt so so relaxed after watching this film. Bale's batman voice must be retired, here's to hoping they keep the altered bat voice from BvS for the Pattison movie, and forget everything else from that flick
The movie causes you to have "sympathy for the devil" - This didn't just take place in some make believe universe, this was an honest portrayal of present day society. There are plenty of people who are in a position similar to that of the main character, who literally have nothing to live for and are too aware and sensitive for their own good. They see the world as a cruel and evil place and a film like this has the potential to influence those kind of people into acts of violence. The Joker is actually glorified as a god among men for murdering people by the end of this film. Just because you have a strong grip on your reality, doesn't mean you should assume that other people do. I can guarantee you that there are now people sympathizing with school shooters and the Batman theater shooter after having seen this film. And on a side note, the movie also encourages revolution through violence, which is the MOST damaging message. It's a tyranical government's dream to have people rise up with violence, so they can strike them down with advanced militarization and usher in a whole new system of intense oppression. With all that being said, I hadn't heard any reviews prior to watching this movie, and these were my honest thoughts after seeing it. But when he was a teen standing up for himself, by rubbing on a bully's eyes making the crows blind him (this all happened) and terrifying his grandmother and finally getting an apartment of his own. Becoming fascinating by fear, starving himself, going into psychology saying secret things to patients to trigger there deep down fears. You could have him try frequencies to give fear. Eventually becoming a professor, and during the job he develops the fear toxin, and the fear injector needle glove thing, and injecting himself making him immune to fear itself. Eventually something happens that makes him inject someone with it, regretting it at first, but realizing after how good it felt, to make an impact like that to someone else, to be someone. To turn his torment on them. He gets fired as a professor for firing a gun in glass as a demonstration on what makes fear. Than gets framed for bad stuff the rest of the staff did (he never got framed for the staff in comics, I just think it might work), and before almost being taken to black gate for the false accusations. He snaps, he finishes the injector, makes the suit. Never seen a movie that took such a deep dive inside mental illness-you’re completely in the character’s mind. Stunning performance by Joaquin Phoenix
You should watch Fight Club as well! Definitely another one that Joker rivals. Also Taxi Driver
Mental illness is considered an illness for a reason, it shouldn't be glorified, there's nothing good about it.
Better watch the Polanski “apartment trilogy”
Jarrod Stowe this isn’t a glorification IMO. Nothing about it is glorious-it’s a study of it. Mental illness absolutely should be taken seriously, and at the core of Joker is a wish for society to not stigmatize people struggling with mental illness, and instead offer them the support and systems they need in order to be accepted and embraced
About mental illness, play the game Hellblade.
Amazing characterization and depiction of schizophrenia
In my opinion, Joker was an accurate depiction of how mental illness and abuse, when left unchecked by society, can lead an individual towards committing violent and self-destructive acts.
Jonathan Willis You are indeed an intellectual human being, I applaud you.
Jonathan Willis put the “self” out of your comment, it’s more accurate to what the movie shows
I think not just mental illness, but anyone who have had it so bad for so long, then that one final “bad day” happened. Like with the guy from the Las Vegas Shooting.
Major difference between Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker:
Heath Ledger’s Joker: he creates chaos
Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker: Chaos created him
That's a nice way to put it. I'll add that this is the best origin story that I've seen since jack Nicolas fell into a toxic vat in the Michael Keaton Batman. Plus, this was even a two for one origin story with no flash backs cause it also had Bruce Wayne's Batman origin story in it as well.

as a criminology student, joker movie is a good case study of understanding the root cause of a crime, that crime isnt just a single spontaneus act, its how a series of unfortunate events and different behaviors that others resort to crimes
Not true. So not true. Crime only needs one act. Omg dont say that.

Ironically, those who complain are EXACTLY the kind of people Joker talked about in the TV show, only interested in THEIR side of the story.
Yea everyone is just so used to Batman or any hero in this matter, while they never know why the villain or antagonist was lead up to this point

George Vlsqz another fool who doesn’t know Joker. Neither Ledger or Phoneix played Joker at all. They played great psychopaths though. The only ones close to Joker is Nicholson, Leto, and ofc Mark Hamil. Ledger and Phoneix aren’t Joker.
George Vlsqz since Ledgers performance i can imagine the pressure these new actors get playing as a Joker. But joaquin phoenix did a very good job and lived up to the hype its bin getting. I dont know meybe i need to see other Jokers once more but in my opinion this Joker rivals Ledgers without a doubt.

This movie is the first one in a long time to make me squirm, fascinated, terrified, sympathetic, angry, and sad. It's why I love it.
Can we ask the Oscars to do one small thing?
When they bring him out, can they introduce him as Joker?
LoganTheLionheart no. You don’t watch the Oscars clearly.
Legit just got back from the film and I would HIGHLY recommend everyone go see it. It’s unsettling at times but god damn is this movie incredible. Joaquin is phenomenal
Unsettling? There was nothing really overly dark or unsettling about it. Unless you never watch these type of genre movies.
J C I feel like the filmmakers were striving to make this film very joyless, because it’s about a tragedy of someone with mental issues slowly going down a road towards violence.
J C Someone explain what was so overly-tragic about this movie? People act like youve never seen reference to child abuse, psychotic thoughts, trauma or violence on screen before.
b4Sed1593 Nobody said that it’s overly-tragic, but it’s still a harsh story for Arthur Fleck.
I really loved the part where he did that thing with the thing in the thing to that guy in the place and got the thing and went to do that thing with his things or something, I can't spoil it but we all know what I'm talking about here...
“The only intelligent tactical response to the horror of life is to defiantly laugh at it.” Hence Joker’s laugh.
That's deep 😌
Reminds me of "he only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion." By Albert Camus. A philosopher who talked alot about absurdism and nihilism. And absurdist nihilism is essentially the Joker's philosophy.
It would be a neurotic response.

When watching the movie you really forget that it's a Joker movie. They did this absolutely incredibly, this movie seems alot more like a person damaged by society, and then this person realises that he gets all the attention by hurting and killing others, thinking violence is the only way to stop his pain. I think this Joker is a better fit for the sad back story, however I couldn't see him fighting batman. All the other Jokers were also great, don't get me wrong, they're great for being an actual Villian like in a Batman movie, but this Joker is a representation of what it looks like to feel worthless and lonely, always taken the piss out of, but then turns the table.
I absolutely loved this movie and love how they portrayed the charater.
i agree totally with ur comment. also i love ur pfp lmao. big george memeulous
I agree; this Joker couldn't fight Batman... yet. There is definitely a page missing in Joker's development from the movie to that but honestly - I could totally see it; Joker going deeper into that rabbit hole and basically becoming what Ledger's Joker was.
jonas åberg i would think the joker that the batman fights would be a different joker influenced by arthur fleck talk on tv.perhaps a person with similar issues see’s joker and tries to become him in the future.
"When watching the movie you really forget that it's a Joker movie."
That actually sums up my entire problem with this movie.
Raving Libertopian Personally, I think you were betrayed by your expectations. You didn‘t get what you want, and you do have a fair point too, the film is called joker and you wanted to see more of that actual topic, the joker. Fair judgement, even if I disagree.

No it isnt, stop kissing ass.
That's a bunch of bullshit because today awareness of mental problems is much more present than before.
Very well put , i like how ignorance of today's society was uncovered through this movie. Contrary to people calling it disturbing , I felt so so relaxed after watching this film. Violence was less important aspect of it , most importantly it shows that everything has a consequence and you can be so much ignorant till chaos charges against you .

If Joaquin Phoenix doesn't receive an Oscar for playing the Joker, it's safe to say they didn't get it.
When people say this movie is doing more harm than it’s worth:
“Well... what happened? Did your balls drop off?”
Right, but should you be The Joker? He's...he's the bad guy...
I thought the movie was amazing and set the bar to an unattainable level in regards to portraying the joker.
@@anthonyvaldes1021 And why should a film have a responsibility to tell us how to think? Should we be manipulated into being useful tools? I dont think you know how critic reviews on RT work. RT is not a rating site for critics. RT just acculamates different reviews and from publications and movie critic sites and put them on RT.
If you actually go on RT and read the critic reviews and click on the full review then it directs you to a different website from where that review came from.
Meaning, 69% of Critics liked the movie. That's twice as many of those who didnt like it which was 31%. Meaning Joker is a pretty good movie.
And yeah the new Ghostbusters wasnt really bad. The only reason why you guys hated it was because it was political for you. You obviously dont like Feminism so you didnt like the movie. It's the same reason why you guys didnt like the Last Jedi and Captain Marvel because "feminism".
You know just because a movie has a feminist theme doesnt make it a bad movie. And you believing Feminism is bad doesnt make the movie bad. You actually have to use critical thinking and explain why Feminism didnt work for the film and where did it work. And critique other aspects of the movie. Just crying about Feminism makes you look like a weak pathetic tool.

Who else wants a scarecrow movie, like a joker 2019 esc. character study of Jonathan crane would be so disturbing. Starting out with the trauma of his grand mother putting crow attractor on him and locking him in an abandoned church as the crows pecked. And when police bust down his door he appears from the corner behind it, and injects them, and goes on a rampage releasing true terror on the few unlucky streets, turning into the scarecrow.
