The most frightening part of this movie was when Dan Torrance picked up a bottle. I was holding my breath, almost fighting the urge to yell at the screen like an idiot. Wonderful film, if you watch it for what it is actually about.
I’ve had addictions like that in the past so I understood completely what he was feeling in that moment. It was so fucking real when his lips were on the bottle, almost giving in but saying fuck you to the addiction and then falling to the floor with relief that you pulled through. Ewan absolutely NAILED that scene. Fucking beautiful.

Pretty sure they ended up making a sly reference right at the end of Dr. Sleep, where (SPOILER,SPOILERSPOILER) Jacks ghost's eneded up pouring Danny a glass of Jack Daniels, saying it was always there drink. again though I could be wrong
I see where you're coming from. To me though, it felt like there was a LOT of fan service in the end. They just went on and on and on, showing different parts of the hotel. I don't watch movie trailers, so I didn't know what was coming. They were like, "Hey, remember this room?" "Hey, remember the door with the axe damage?", etc. The only reason it bothered me is because it felt like the movie took a "time out" to do this. Nothing was happening at this time other than they were waiting for Rose to show up. It didn't make sense to me that Ewan McGregor's character would go walking around like that in the context of the story. It was the only part of the movie (other than baseball boy's murder scene, which I hated) that I didn't care for but it didn't ruin the movie for me or anything, I just felt it was unnecessary (much like the way they portrayed baseball boy's murder scene).
I’ve seen the Shining and I still don’t understand it! This movie has much more exposition and easier to understand. The Shining is like a confusing nightmare that you wake from and all you can remember is that it was scary AF.
@@yogagirl949 If you found The Shitting (yes, that is what I call Kuprick's bastardization) even remotely scary, you have issues. I thought it sucked as a kid, still think it sucks now.
As a parent of a boy that young, that was horrifying. I've never been so freaked out that I was ready to walk out (something I've never done to the worst of the worst movies) This is NOT a complaint. It's rare movies have that kind of power and I loved every minute of it
@@Fahrenheitluverxoxo It's highly implied the mom died from a drug overdose and the baby then starved to death. And Dan just left them.. He even has visions of their decaying bodies. And we know he sees real ghosts. It could have been a bit clearer, but that was what I took from it. He did after all run to the toilet and vomit after he woke up and saw her.
This director had some balls man. The sit down with halloran in the beginning was what really impressed me. I was really mad when Kubrick killed him off in the first film.
I thought it was the perfect marriage of Kubrick and King's individual versions. I liked the ending of the film better than the ending of the book. It was also way more brutal.
@@Corn_Pone_Flicks Nah. Dan definitely should have lived. Why even have him escape from the Overlook if he was just going to die there anyway? I hate that because Kuprick ruined the story that it caused the Doctor Sleep movie to end that way.
Everytime a movie uses a frightening sound in an abrupt event to scare the audience, my eye rolls. I watched so many horror films, mostly asians are scary as f*ck because most of them know how to scare without relying on a frightening sound! Why da f*ck they don’t learn from them? Its like decades... they’re still using so much jumpscares...
Fear is subjective. The shining never scared me either. But after watching Jaws I wouldn't jump in the lake (Michigan)for years! Depends on the person.
It's not remastered, it's re-recorded. Huge difference. Also, the entire score for Doctor Sleep pays total tribute to Wendy Carlos' score for the 1980's movie.
@@Man_of_Tomorrow I know. I do happen to have Carlo's unused Shining score. Two tracks were used (plus the trailer track) in addition to the constant heartbeats, which Dr Sleep's score *do* reference
I went into this theater expecting doctor sleep to be boring at best and to put me to sleep. I ended up having the most fun I've had with a movie in years. Flannigan truly is the best horror writer director I've ever seen. He is driven, creative, passionate and he deserves as much praise as possible.
The scene where the kid was being tortured/murdered was horrifying (especially as a parent with a boy about that age). I never walk out of movies, but I was getting ready to (not a complaint....that's how intense and scary it was). Stayed for the entire movie, and loved it
AdamG1983 I cried at that part, literally the emotions off seeing that fucking enraged me. But he did get justice and my favorite scene was the part when the that bitch got her hand crushed by the girl. That was so rewarding to see.
This was legitimately one of the best movies of 2019. Smart script, fully fleshed out characters, an amazing cast and as a bonus a great soundtrack. Also I agree with you Chris that Rebecca Ferguson was exceptional.
Rebecca Ferguson made such an awesome villain, and despite the horrible things she was doing Ferguson made me care about her character (especially the points where she was experiencing grief).
@@vb2388 I was trying not be too spoilery but I was actually referring to when she was feeling her friends in the True Knot getting picked off one by one. I thought Ferguson did a great job with Rose's pain in the sequence.
I haven't read any of them(sad, I know) but I do appreciate these movies for taking their time with the settings, scenarios and characters. 1980's The Shining still remains one of my personal favorite King films because of it.
@@TheAdam1995 Well I think Kubrick knew that about King novels and made the smart choice to let it simmer before making things boil over in the last act. It was very well directed and they followed the same pattern with Doctor Sleep. Tough to please fans of King and Kubrick at once and this movie had the monster task to do both.
These movies shouldn’t even be compared. I think they did a really smart move in not making the movies anything alike. The first one was a deep psychological horror story and the second one felt more like a drama with many sci-fi and horror elements. It’s literally my favorite movie so far this year. Free. Loved this movie!
"The scariest things are things that are simply implied." The reason this is, is because we tend to conjure the worst possible scenario. Our own mind can be our own worst enemy. Paranoia....Fear of the unknown is the most powerful fear-it's why people fear DEATH. Because we don't know what happens the moment the heart stops pumping. We don't know where the mind goes we don't know what happens next. It's why most horror movies lose their luster when the monster is shown. When a paranormal film shows the monster, ok sure scary whatever. But when it doesn't? It feels all the more real and possible. THIS is why the first Paranormal Activity is so effective. Two adults, two ADULTS terrorized by something they cannot see or control. THAT is scarier than any typical jump scare fest. After all with a jump scare, you often aren't reacting to what's on screen, but the loud noise you just heard. You're able to brush that off easily. But a PROPER scare is one that will *BURN INTO YOUR BRAIN AND IT'S WHAT YOU'LL THINK ABOUT WHEN YOU LOOK OUTSIDE AT NIGHT.*
Really? Sometimes I feel like I'm happier when movies show the monster (the thing, the ritual, babadook)... Not discounting what you're saying at all, maybe I'm just weird
Depends on the film/show, but i agree that's often the case...like i found the first 7 episodes of Stranger Things terrifying, and then i saw the monster and it was suddenly nowhere near as scary anymore (and the old Stephen King IT TV mini series is a famous example of seeing the monster ruining the scare). Yet, as Nicole mentioned above, seeing the monster in The Thing only amplified the scare.
More horror movies should do this, the fear of the unknown. Paranoia is a strong element that should be used more instead of cheap jumpscares, some horror movies use that element and as a result they are more memorable.
@@punkybubblegum Personal preference imo. I don't think anything actually "scares" me when it comes to movies, but I love monsters - so I'm always happy to see "the monster". There are definitely people who feel the opposite.
@@gojochillmode839 "Paranoia is a strong element that should be used more instead of cheap jumpscares" - there's a reason many consider TV the superior mode these days (which certainly wasn't the case in the 80s-00s)...as Scorsese says (and RLM said at least a year ago) movies (from Hollywood) nowadays are almost amusement rides, instead of stories. Not just in horror, but perhaps even worse in the 'super hero movie'.
Couldn’t agree more. This was an amazing story on its own, and then the “fan service” at the end actually had value rather than being just for show. Everybody was so good in their respective characters, too. 9/10 for me 👌🏼
Agreed, they began the film with a couple of beats from the soundtrack then left it at that until the climax. I admit that I couldn't stop smiling during Dan and Abra's drive to the hotel with the familiar music playing in the background XD
My only gripe with the movie is the third act. It’s almost impossible for me to accept that was Jack Torrence at the bar, I wish they would’ve found a better lookalike and used a Nicholson impressionist for the voice. I also didn’t like how forced the evil spirits were in the Overlook. I found it out of character and a little cringe for them all to be grouped together and blocking hallways, etc. I guess I just have to ignore the original film.
Rose was my favorite character in the film. Rebecca Ferguson was amazing. She brought the atmosphere and set the tone. Loved the scene when she’s flying through the sky and finds Abra’s room.
@Catharsis the lighthouse is most certainly horror lol. it's a lot of different things and horror is one of them. there's a lot of horrifying elements.
I think that this movie is extremely overrated. Hear me out. I feel like I've gone into the twilight zone just seeing all of these positive comments. It has decent-high scores on review websites, and I would certainly call it worse than Midsommar (watch it if you haven't, my pick for best horror of 2019). This movie is about Shining vampires. The worst thing about this movie is what it does every 15 minutes. The first scene, the bathtub girl scenes, the theater scene, the baseball player scene, the scene where they're at the park on the bench, the scene where he shows up at the house and the father is defensive, the scene where they're casually driving to the forest together, etc, etc. Literally, just about every 15 minutes (sometimes as little as 5 minutes) references kidnapping, torturing, and/or murdering @hildren. This is the most glaring problem, and it leaves a bad taste in the mouth if you catch it. It might take a few watch throughs to notice, but it is extremely strange. In addition to this however. The writers (or writer) seem to not understand genre in general. It's understandable that the scenes I listed can be seen as scary to some, but it really comes off more as a sci-fi adventure until they get to the hotel. The horror elements are weak at best, and in bad taste at worst. It's to the point where I don't think you could be truly scared unless you are a child (rated R movie), or a parent. I just watched it for the first time, and I do not think it will have any kind of lasting impact on me in the future.
@@skeletonking2352 watched the shining as a kid or young teenager, was the only horror movie I could finish until then. I didn't think doctor sleep movie was a cliché horror movie or even horror at all, although I got the same vibe (although more towards horror) from the shining. Agree that the sci-fi elements were too much, but I couldn't have come up with a story that was better or one that would not have been repetitive
@@skeletonking2352 The thing is, why call it a horror movie ? I just watched it and thought it was a terrific movie, though I couldn't quite identify the genre, and it's fine. It has horror elements to it, while keeping that investigation/mystery theme going and it's great and engaging. Who cares if it doesn't stick to what a horror film should or shouldn't be, as long as it's enjoyable and well made ?! It's most definitely not a horror movie, just like Shining wasn't (didn't even jump - which I did on this one), and even less overrated. The acting is great, the characters are great, the story is great. What's there to complain about ?
@@WhoAmI-tr5me Yes, I absolutely agree that it shouldn't be called a horror movie. Maybe mystery? I don't even know about that though. There's a way to describe this kind of movie however. It doesn't understand genre, or at least the creators of this movie don't understand which genre it's supposed to be. It should probably be classified as a science-fiction action adventure, with mystery elements, and minor horror elements. I don't think that the genre thing is a criticism though just by itself. The real problems here are the weak villains, the inability to suspend disbelief (partially a genre problem), and the gratuitous actions (especially coming from the villains). One thing I have seen a lot in the good reviews is the mentioning of the villains, and especially their motives. Their motives for doing evil are just about as weak as it could possibly ever get. It is implied that they do evil just to live a long time. They signed themselves up to have to do this evil thing, and just for immortality. Even if they didn't all sign themselves up for it, they're still only doing it in order to survive, which isn't much of a better motivation to do evil, and either motive is really easy to find fault in. A good villain has motives that are either not easy to find fault in, as in they're not objectively evil, and mediocre-alright villains are villains on a path of revenge, or trying to right wrongs. I don't want to go over the inability to suspend disbelief because that may be different for you, and I can't dispute that. My problem with this lies mostly with the fact that the more grounded heroes perspective seems set in reality, whereas the villains have nothing about them that seems set in reality about their lifestyles. The violence serves no purpose other than to make you think "wow these guys are EVIL". No nuance in perspective to whether or not they could be the good guys is even allowed. I just want you to open your mind for a second and consider the following. Do you think that this movie could have gotten good reviews at least partially because people will rate anything with Stephen King's name on it highly (especially in recent years). Now I wouldn't say that the new IT movie was bad by any stretch, and I even really liked it. Probably like a 7-8/10, but I see a lot of people who just love everything by him. Most of his books are even pretty damn good, but I wouldn't say all of them are, and I would never give a movie (or book) bonus points just for coming from SK. He is still capable of making shit, just like the rest of us, and I have even seen some of the worst things from him.
To those who don’t understand what they did they basically tore into his insides from his gut to his scrotum through his chest etc they basically tortured him slowly in order to get as much steam from him.

9:09 - Chris makes a great point; I remember people being upset that they didn’t see the monster in the “Babadook”, even though the movie is a psychological horror.
The baseball boy's acting had me absolutely floored. Couldn't believe how real the pain and fear and sadness in his voice felt. That, and the scene where Danny whips the bottle of whiskey at the floor after almost taking a sip were the two most powerful scenes in this movie for me.
This felt like an old-school horror/thriller. The first act isn't over-the-top No over-use of jump-scares No gallons of entrails No torture porn No "Michael Bay" style cuts
This movie actually made me more sad than anything else due to me having such empathy for Danny and what he’s gone through and how it affected. SPOILER One of the best examples would be when he talks to his dead father you can see how much it hurt him to see him and when he flinched when Jack slammed the table really shows that he still is afraid of him and the hotel.

Ewan MacGregor has a way, usually, of choosing good roles to play, even if the movie itself isn't the greatest. Like, in the Star Wars prequels, he does the best job playing the most compelling character in the trilogy, with the best acting and has made the character his own so effectively he has now essentially become this generation's Obi-Wan Kenobi. And, I don't think I need to say anything about Trainspotting lol or any of his other films. He's just an all-around great actor and there probably isn't a movie I wouldn't go see if I notice he's in it. 👍

Tyler Leyden No, that was pretty much the first movie...not really joking on that part. I have a better one, though. The Shining Supremacy. No, The Shining Knight. Hey, you know....that’s not a bad fit!!
I also love The Shining, and have seen it countless times. I didn't see any reviews, and didn't even watch the preview for Doctor Sleep. I thought it was an incredible movie. One of my favourite parts was the drive up to The Overlook. I had no idea that the movie would return to The Overlook, so it was such an incredible feeling to see this long, beautiful, shot of the windy drive to the hotel, with that music that makes you feel like you are returning to something that scared you so much as a kid. I actually felt like I was the character, returning to The Overlook, after so many years, and it did not disappoint. A testament to the talent of the director.
I know off topic but The fourth one (the shoe shine) reminds me of Billy bats from goodfellas “This kid was great they use to call him Spitshine Tommy. I swear to god Oh he’d make your shoes look like fucking mirrors.”

It didnt feel like fan service to me. It felt like Danny was finally confronting his past instead of hiding everything in a box.

"The scariest things are things that are simply implied."
The reason this is, is because we tend to conjure the worst possible scenario.

This movie was so great and highly underrated. THAT scene was so intense and this was the best horror film of the year.

This is amazing that Chris now works with Flanagan.

@@MegaTeeruk I think that Chris is a great film critic, but I agree with your implication that his review of Lake Mungo may leave viewers feeling rather anti-climatic. I found that movie more boring then scary. But what people find scary is subjective, so I'll let it slide.
Finally a a scary movie with substance. It touches just enough of the old to keep it tied. But love the new angle and depth they gave Danny.
The scariest bit of this film is Danny saying how he saw his mum's face covered in black flies
if we'd seen that i would agree...but as we didn't...i disagree. i feel there was a lot of interesting things about Doctor Sleep...especially when you open your mind to the concept that in the BOOKS all of the stephen king stories are connected...even if they don't interconnect...they are in the same universe.

IDyce88 I just finished reading Doctor Sleep and never saw any mention of Carrie...
@@collector832 look up steven king trivia...first of all...all his books are part of the same universe...secondly trivia says that Carrie and Doctor Sleep have a connection...though only a small one. the books don't have to mention it for it to exist...the cat thing was obviously a nod to pet sematary but you wouldn't know that unless you saw that film or read the book. the Knot are interested in anyone with special powers...Carrie would be a given...it merely takes some outside the box "goes without saying" thinking to know they probably would have taken her if they got the chance.
@@IDyce88 I'm sure they would have taken her if they got the chance, but they didn't, and she's never mentioned in the book.

@@jupitersnoot4915 For me, I think it was all about how the manipulation of sound and music that the genre of horror has conditioned my own expectations over the years was completely subverted and flipped the other way around; it was maddening and engaging in one fell swoop.
Scariest movie of all time.
You mentioned good fan-service, but NO mention of Blade Runner: 2049?
2049 was AWESOME...got way less credit than it deserves.
true. also because this film has a COMPLETELY diff plot, with only the same universe and shine mechanics, like how danny had a guide, and then generationally becomes one. star wars is a terrible example, all trilogies are clones, so simple minded and predictable.
@@c5quared626 Which only further proves my point. I love how 2049 didn't just rely on the nostalgia of the original: it actually TRIED to be its own thing and succeeded at that exceptionally, which is why, to this day, it still holds up alongside its predecessor and will continue to do so for decades, whereas we've already forgotten that The Last Jedi exists.
@@c5quared626 As for The Shining, I didn't like it, but have considered watching this because it looks interesting (i.e. actually trying to tell a new story, not just remind the viewer of the previous instalment) at every turn.
Dude, he loves Blade Runner 2049. It was his favorite film of 2017. He doesn't need to mention it all the time to show how much he loves it. He admitted he still can't decide whether he liked it more than the original or not.
I was blown away by how he handled both versions of the shining and also paid equal respects to them both some how. Adapted the book very loyally and changed certain things methodically. Paying respect while also making it his own and there are few book adaptations that do that well. This movie was one of my favorie movies of the year.
Mike Flanagan is one of my favorite horror directors today. I love everything he’s done so far, and so I knew that Doctor Sleep was in good hands. Can’t wait to see it!
Your comments about the first 30 minutes are bang on. I love when a movie takes time on character development. I think they did an excellent job of drawing you in. The segments that took place in 1980 served to bring you back into Danny's head. This movie is so well paced imo I was shocked 2.5 hours had gone by when it ended. I never looked at the run time prior & I didn't expect a movie of this nature to run that long.
Anakin: if your not with me then you're my enemy.
Danny: My allegiance is to the Shining, to democracy!
Just watched the directors cut. After having previously read the book I have to say it’s a great adaption. The ending is different but plays well with the original film and the original book. Pleasantly surprised oh and Ewan mcgregor plays Danny Torrance really well too.
