When his mother says
“I never heard him cry” “He’s always been a happy boy”
*chills*
yeah, I almost cried. probably never felt such away in a theater before
Lilla Sked it was a great scene in a great movie
That was one of the best lines. It made you imagine how much pain and sadness Arthur has felt throughout his entire life, and all of it went by unnoticed by the one person that had to take care of him. Hell, went by unnoticed by EVERYONE.
Yeah he was fkn crying that whole time
@Long Nguyen He has a neurological disorder where he has excessive laughter when he feels emotional. So Arthur's only way of expressing emotion is by laughter so when he is sad and wants to cry, it is laughter that comes out. So all those times he was laughing as a boy, he was actually crying.

"I was wondering if you could ask the doctor to increase my medication."
"Arthur, you're on seven different medications. Surely they must be doing something!"
"I just don't want to feel so bad anymore."
As someone with depression, this exchange almost made me cry. Please treat each other with kindness, folks. You never know how much someone could be suffering inside.
Same here.
@I am the one who controls the sun Agreed. The problem is when someone is completely healthy but is INSANELY sensitive.
All the controversy surrounding this movie tells me that mainstream media hates a relatable character... Especially if that character has violent tendencies.

Noticed that too. I'm guessing this is a Gotham from late 70's , early 80's era. So in general smoking was much more prominent and accepted then, of course in Gotham's universe anything goes. it supposed to be urban, dark, and dirty. the smoking fits right in and Phoenix did an outstanding job in making it look cool and blend in well as a part of what the joker does.

That part was meant to show us how he longs for human contact. A bump in in the elevator with this woman and he starts imagining a relationship with her. Because she was one of the few people who didn’t treat him like trash he clings to her, hence him later in the movie showing up in her apartment telling her he had a bad day. Then obviously there we realise that his relationship with her was nothing more than a fantasy

Arthur fleck and Bruce Wayne May have different birthdays. But the Joker and Batman were born on the same day.
deep🎯🎯
What month
i literally said the same thing
What
Both in the movie and in the comics.
The saddest part for me was the fact that Arthur was actively trying to get help. He was going to therapy and taking medications. He tried to tell his therapist that the medications weren't working and he was showing her that the type of therapy he was receiving (being locked up and simply talking to someone weekly) wasn't helping. Many times, we are shown that a character just gives up or a character doesn't believe that they are wrong or that they need help, but it isn't often we are shown one that tries to get better only to fail. "Keep trying and you'll succeed." No, sometimes, people try their best over and over, and they still fail and are ruined by the experience.
The moment you realize that the jokers had two bullets in his gun. One for Murray and one for himself... but choose to shoot Murray twice out of fun.

After he discovers his mothers past and kills her there the scene with him holding an old photo of her and on the back is written "something, something, T.W" yeah i can't remember the exact words :) but it placed some doubt in my mind as to whether T.W did father a child with one of his maids and then just covered it up, the process of which broke Jokers mother mentally leaver her not sure what is real or not.
That pic said "Love your smile. TW" on the back.
Bro u the m.v.p. was searching gor someone who actually noticed the final twist i feel they actually had gotten together for a minute and he was just terrified of the fact that they would find out that he had an affair with a maid and also when he saw arthur and how messed up he was and then compare that with how classy bruce is u see the connection and the irony i think ots a dope concept to make them half brothers seeing hes a main villain most of the time

Real_Slim_Shady it was incredibly visceral watching the film. Just felt like I didn’t want to see Arthur get hurt or anything but then watched him get absolutely broken over the course of the movie. Which I think the film intended to do.
The real hero of Joker is the midget.
- He is made fun of his whole life.
- He probably gets jumped too.
- He has the same deadbeat job as Arthur
- He is abused at his job
- He has no family visible supporting him.
- He has no girlfriend that we know of
- His only friends are people who are sociopathic and abusive
- He’s probably never fulfilled his dreams
- He is treated like a freak
Dude never becomes evil.
Kudos to you little guy.

One of the funniest parts
The writing of this movie is absolutely genius. It turned a comic book villain with obscure origins into a mentally challenged man who becomes a killer because society failed to help him.
This movie was another breed!
It was great but Todd Phillips takes lacks creativity and takes the same ideas and plot from other films
I love you Chris, but the early lives of Bruce and Arthur were no where near equivalent. The only tragic thing that happened to Bruce was that his parents were killed in front of his eyes. That is of course devastating, but Arthur’s whole life was fucked up in every single aspect from the get-go, while Bruce grew up in a wealthy family.
Just wanted to point that out
“Social media awards extremes.” -Chris Stuckmann, 2019
*rewards*
I found that him saying “you wouldn’t get it” was more him accepting his differences from the rest of society and no longer needing acceptance for his mental state rather than thinking of Bruce Wayne’s parents dying
I think so too.. he gave up his dream of being a stand up comedy and making people laugh at that moment
That’s what I love about this movie. It can be interpreted in so many different ways
This is just how I saw it but I think it goes back to his old therapist when he said she didn’t listen. And how “she doesn’t get it”
I thought it was years later, when Batman was already a thing, he probably put him in Arkham in the first place. Joker probably realized then that he made Bruce into Batman himself.
Same here.
There was a bit towards the end - I think when he was dancing down the steps - when I could see Nicholson, Ledger and Pheonix's Joker all in one. It was awesome.
My thought was that climbing the staircase represented his struggle to climb out of his mental illness.
Each time we see him climb the stairs it seems to be getting harder and harder for him to do so, especially after his therapy and medication are cut off.
Eventually he just gives in and gleefully takes the descent into madness by dancing down the stairs.
I HATE THAT CENSORSHIP IS COMING BACK AGAIN.

- Rotten Tomatoes “critics”
If this movie is considered "dangerous", then GTA is a living weapon.
And, that would make movie critics prophets.
Tunan Guo Mortal Kombat is as well.
You have to wonder if some of these critics work with the government because this movie kinda opens our eyes we deal with a lot of rich people who get away with a lot of s*** and they do look down on us as well as the government looks down on us so are the government Brighton that we're going to wake up and see them for what they are the rich and the government is that's why they put these critics seem to discredit the movie the government and the rich do look at people beneath them as clowns but we are not clowns we were hard just like everybody else followed the system it doesn't work for everybody control lost the kilostate shoot us sometimes we just get fed up of leaving the same rules day today and still get tarnish so why not make sense and you've had enough
Cassandra Amore the movie isn’t as deep as you think and certainly doesn’t "reveal" anything about society, lmfao.
Phoenix’s performance is impressive, but the script is incredibly shallow. I doesn’t really comment on society or really criticize anything it just repeats that "society is mad", and shows us that, but yeah, that’s hardly original.
I also love that the horrible murder of three traders makes people in the movie side with the murderer for some reason and engage in an "anti-rich movement", like it’s just that simple.
The movie isn’t dangerous though, how anybody could be influenced by such a shallow message is beyond me.
@@AdrianCelsiusTepes and what's so stupid is it's supposed to be shallow and cold. That's the point people make to even Batman on why he wants to save Gotham. Even the Gotham TV show does this. Batwoman might explore this too.
Gotham is a dark shallow cold city but hides it's truths with family bonds and some spurts of happy memories. But mostly all familes are doomed to die in Gotham.
That scene in the subway, when he commits his first murder, the visuals as theyre beating him up and we get close ups of his face while the lights go on and off and on and off. Its like were watching his internal struggle in that moment as hes about to snap. Absolutely brilliant.
I guess that's the thing about movies. The more you watch, the more plotlines you recognize, the harsher you are on future movies. I've never seen the other two movies you mentioned. So to me, Joker's plotline was completely new and fresh.
One big moment, when he does in fact find out he is adopted right there and then you realize that he no longer has an identity, he’s not a Flek or Wayne, he is no one and Joker is no one...amazing
Yes, agree 100%. thats the deeper shit no one is talking about, people sperg with "ooh its just like taxi driver!" without thinking about Phoenix's performance or the amazing directing or screenplay.
AFTER he reads the adoption papers, there’s a flashback scene where his mother is talking to the therapist and he’s just reciting to her the same things Thomas Wayne said, and when Arthur decides to finally dawn the joker he looks at a picture of his mother with the back saying “you look absolutely beautiful” singed by Thomas Wayne!! He crumples it up an throws it over his shoulder. Something he doesn’t notice but the audience sure does
I think thomas had her committed and made to look insane.
He's not a fleck or a Wayne. The only people who could tell him are now dead. So really he doesn't know his origin yet it's an origin tale.
I do believe thomas was really the father though.
J Alves when he crushes the picture of his mother at the end it says, you have a beautiful smile, from TW. or something very similar maybe just a different adjective. This implies that maybe Thomas really did have her committed to cover it up
"The worst things about having a mental Illness is that people expect u to behave as if u dont have one"
My favorite quote from the movie from jokers notebook
It difficult for people to deal with complicated issues and often have negative stigmas toward people that have mental issue and some people use it as excuse so that doesn't help

@Oxy Moron It definitely wasn't boring. This isn't your regular cliché action movie. It's a slow movie that shows every event that caused the Joker. It was a very interesting watch.
I do feel like it was extremely interesting some people may find it boring because the movie moves slow to show u all the details but I really enjoyed it excited to have it in my movie collection

@Thomas Michael I mean, I guess I am because I didn't have a problem with the song. Didn't know who made it, found out after the fact, and still don't think it matters.
I still wonder, why does Arthur start talking very camp-ish when he's on the talk show? He starts elongating vowels ("muraaaay") and changes pitch. He also starts uncontrollably starts shaking his feet in the lead up to shooting Murray, and it turns into a dance when he stands up. Are these to support the idea that he's turning into this Joker persona?
I thought the exact same!!! They should have cut it right after the “you wouldn’t get it” line. Would have put more emphasis on that and the following scene with him running down the hall was unnecessary.
I thought it should have cut after he says, 'You wouldn't get it' and walks down the hall leaving bloody footprints.

The “blood smile” standing on top of the cop car was incredible. Is it just me, or did that somewhat feel like a homage to Ledger, with the blood resembling the scars?
cobo1316 Yes, it was.
he was originally going to cut his mouth with glass, but they didn’t want it to be too much like heath, but the interesting thing is in the original script when he’s in arkham at the end, he is talking to the woman and has the cuts stitched up, indicating the movie was real and not a “joke”
TwistedOwl I had no idea about that. I do love the blood smile and how beautifully dramatic he did it to himself. Not sure how cleanly it would have gone in the scene with the glass, but I am not opposed to it, especially if that would have revealed if it all truly happened or not.
no, it isn’t... it’s more like him naturally smiling. at the beginning of the film he had to force a smile... on top of that car he can smile freely...
Juan Zep I agree with that also.
If I may, I just wanna offer my take on the controversy surrounding its use of violence. Those that have judged Joker for being “too violent” are missing the point - The film is not so much about violence as it is about what prompted Arthur to violent action. If society were to hold a mirror up to its face, we would see the true monster glaring back at us that slowly but surely pushed Arthur Fleck to the point at which he transformed into the Joker, discovering his purpose and identity he’d been searching for. If he were acknowledged instead of ignored, and if the system worked and continued to treat him when he was trying to better himself but sadly got cut off, things might’ve gone differently. That’s the tragedy of Joker; everyone deserves to be heard and there are so many people who get the short end of the stick.
Anyway, amazing film and I enjoyed your review!
Deadpool's violence felt like normal comic book- movie violence with blood added. But with Joker, those gunshots felt so real. Also the scene where he kills his friend in front of the dwarf was genuinely unsettling.
John Wick mows down dozens of fools and very little empathy is held for any of them.
Joker shoots Murray once and it felt like I just witnessed a real murder, I was shocked.
All about framing and context. In John wick apparently a baby in a stroller could potentially be a hitman, in joker these are regular people.

I think if Joker and Bruce were half-brothers, I would like that
I was surprised that Chris didn’t mention the fact that Arthur is an unreliable narrator, so the story we see might be a version of the “true events” or an amalgamation of what happened to Arthur. Like, that was what interested me: how Arthur interpreted certain moments and how HE showed US what he saw, how he saw. Maybe there was no Joker Uprising, maybe at the end he is laughing because he inspired the true Joker and he is just poor Arthur Fleck imprisoned while someone else is using his alias - which would again be a satire for how other people (more privileged people) take credit for your work, another sad note in his tale.
I don’t know, I just think Todd Phillips played with this idea that maybe this happened exactly like this, maybe it’s not real, maybe the opposite happened, maybe (most likely) it’s in Arthur’s head and he is mocking/using the audience, while being INSPIRED by Scorcese’s films (there are no original stories anymore right?).
No one will read this, because it’s a year and half later, but I still think that Joker was phenomenal for allowing me to fully analyze its complex and devastating plot.
The overall message of this movie is: Be nice to everyone. Treat everyone like how you want to be treated.
But there's also a general social commentary pointing out a cruel, but sadly very true reality which is that the elites do really live in their bubble and are completely unaware of the hellhole distress and violence that the lower classes go through every single day of their lives. Well, not unaware per se (they do read news and do see people around them when they are in town), but I mean unaware of what it actually is like and how it feels like to live in those conditions.
...or they may just stab you in the fucking eye
That neighbor of his was nice and never did anything to him.... Soooooo?
If only the world was that fair. Treating others the way you wanna be treated doesn't work. It's always giving love for abuse.
Woag It totally does. If you want to be loved, you gotta try to express your love for someone else. But also you don’t want to be loved by someone you don’t like, so you mustn’t push your love if the other person doesn’t want it. Same goes with any kind of relations. And if you don’t want to be abused, you just set a distance in relationships that is comfortable for you and defend yourself if needed, both physically and psychologically.
If someone behaves like a total dick, you treat him like you would treat yourself and how you would like to be treated by others if you were behaving the same way.
I don’t think I was comfortable at any point while watching that movie.

I thought it was ironic that it was like Taxi Driver and Robert Deniro was playing the opposite part basically that was in Taxi Driver.
"The thing is MUR-RAY".
Classic Joker
So good, I can hear it
I love when he did that haha I couldn't stop smiling

In Chile we found this movie so good that in two weeks we made our own version
Oof
It's hard for me to put into words how good I found Joker (2019) made by the director Todd Phillips. This movie is great and so far one of my favorite movies from this year and in my opinion the best movie of 2019 so far.
The cinematography of the film was gorgeous, the soundtrack was mostly perfect, the acting was good too but probably the main reason why I love this movie so much is Joaquin Phoenix. What a fantastic actor!
I love the Dark Knight trilogy from Christopher Nolan and Heath Ledger's Joker. Ledger gave us a realistic Joker for the first time and Phoenix continued his legacy with respect. Phoenix gave us the same in his own way with a deeper background. In addition with an excellent Joker performance e.g. the Dancing and his Joker laugh. Just fantastic!
The Joker's Mystery is still contained in this movie and although it's an Origin Story, I still have the feeling that the Joker has remained a complete Mystery and will probably always remain.
The movie gets a 9/10 from me. The best DC movie since The Dark Knight (2008).
“So the makeup isn’t a political statement?”
“Oh no, I don’t believe in that... I don’t believe in anything”
I found that sad actually.
Lu HeDi I did too. He had to identity until that very moment and after the talk show he found his identity. The joker.
jbigboi13 loved that line. The slight smile on his face as he said it was great too hahah
Nihilism at its finest.

Is there a joker video on UA-cam that doesn’t have one of your comments?
That's not a quote from the joker
Mr. Friendship How the hell do you people function in real life? I’m baffled.
Don’t tease him. He might break and become Joker!
_I wonder what will break first, your spirit or your BODY?_
Hi Chris. I love your reviews!
I just finally got around to seeing Joker and you are right -- the panic before this movies release was very overblown. Sadly, people on the internet only care about clicks on their articles so they will post anything that generates a positive/ negative reaction
Finallly I can watch all these awesome looking review/explanation vids I just recently watched Joker three times. Once for me, once to see the skill and art, and once to read all the notes and smaller details.
I adored this movie. Really wanna see it again.
Is it me or did anyone else notice that Arthur lost his laughing problem when he become the Joker? We’ve seen him laugh uncontrollably in situations where he’s uncomfortable, but he doesn’t do that when after becoming the Joker. It’s like he was completely liberated.
Saw this exact comment on r/movies lmao
Yep. I also liked how they did a whole scene of him prepping his entrance only to ditch what he practiced. It was an amazing moment that finished the transformation to the Joker in my eyes.
Joseph Deluca I see you saw the Gamer Theorists Film Theory video.
Clementine Krishan He never really had the condition to begin with. He was just lied to so he grew up with it. Placebo effect I believe
Alejandro Momota Not sure about that. The card he hands out says it can be caused by head trauma, the film later explains how he was found beaten, malnourished, and with bad head trauma. The laughing stopping is much more likely to show how he truly is free and, like The Joker we all know and love, isn’t what uncomfortable in high stress situations, instead he learns to love it.
I feel like they payed homage to the Heath Ledger Joker in the scene when hes riding in the back seat of the cop car with his head resting on the inside of the window. That immediately reminded me of that scene from the dark knight.
I thought he was gonna get his head outta the window for a sec.
There was a few homages to previous batman work. The clown mask on top of the makeup reminds me of Dark Knight rises. Him being on a talk show and killing the host reminds me of killing joke. And there were probably a few others.
"Do I look like a clown who can start a movement?" = " Do I really look like a guy with a plan?"
Or the notebook, Heaths joker was made by a notebook he kept while prepping and now it’s kinda famous
I saw the film last night and that scene really got me, this is one amazing film
Good review (I've only just discovered your channel, love it!). Am I the only one who sees the Inception parallel with the last interview scene? It leaves open the possibility that everything that happened in the movie was in his head, or that some, or all, of it was real. The giveaway to me for the theory that it could be entirely delusional is the question "Have you thought any more about why you were in hospital?"which he (nor the movie) ever answers. Going one step further with that theory, the whole thing was his delusion for him to rationalise the one real event in the movie, smothering to death the mother who was complicit in his childhood abuse. I'd prefer that not to be the case, as it's too close to an "...and it was all a dream" ending that we used to get told to avoid at school :)
Some people get their kicks stomping on a dream. He sure stomped on that lady’s dream in the ending lol shoes all bloody.
Arthur Fleck on critics' reactions on Joker:
"Is it just me, or is it getting crazier out there?"
They don't get it...
Wtf is wrong with a vigilante feeling good about his imposed justice even if it is slightly violent if the society deserves it then it's ok because the world is crazy anyway and people fail people.
@@mindfulclarity169 & why does Chris have a problem with an eccentric guy kissing the neighbour and her having sex with him? She doesn't know he is mentally unstable. She may have just been 'taken with the moment' with the neighbour she already had a small interaction with.

I was like damn...he's screwed
RARAYAYA RAA yeah, I’m pretty sure when he was laughing at the small guy he was trying to hold it back, I don’t think he found the jokes funny. You could see he was really struggling
I was hollering. I was anxious through most of it until the door and the door chain.
Hahaha yehh
I thought him choosing to only lock that part of the door was intentional. It was funny but would loved to see the Joker kill him after that lmao
In a scene after Arthur kills his mother, he finds himself looking at a picture of what looks like to be a younger version of his mother. He then flips it to find it has something written on it. It read: "I've always loved your smile. -TW" So in a way Thomas Wayne could still be the Arthur's dad but like Penny said: "He (Thomas) is a powerful man, we had to keep appearances and they made me sign some papers."
Or Penny is insane enough to wrote that herself on the photo.
It could go either way with Joker's lineage, but it doesn't really matter to him by the end.
@@remliqa I didn't think about that
@@remliqa That's how I took it. I think she was just living a fantasy.
After watching several of your reviews, I feel that you should be TEACHING Film Review, not just giving them!
Thank You Stuckman for putting in the time and effort to do this so thoughtfully.
My absolute favorite thing is that Joker legitimately says “We live in a society”
@Bryan birdchest Callen Also blew Murray's mind.
i couldn't believe it, what a revealation
Seinfeld reference?
I still have no idea what that meme means.
Basically its a joke on people who try to be deep by saying stuff like “wE lIvE iN A sOcIeTy wHeRe ______”
On a rather pessimistic, but realistic note: The media knows exactly what they're doing by highlighting extreme reviews and comments. Having headlines like "Movie theaters to beef up security in case of mass shootings" related to this movie puts that idea into the world. Just like how they make killers into celebrities. It's extremely dangerous, and they're always playing innocent. Disgusting.
So true
I quite enjoy a bit of the old ultraviolence myself brother
The media is foaming at the mouth thinking of the clicks and views that a shooting or mass murderer would give them. Especially if they got to say "told you so" They're hoping all that person needs is a little push, and the media is dying to give it to them.
Agreed. And.... it only works because the masses eat it up. It’s a vicious circle.
Not really. So Stuckmann just countered the idea that movies influence people to do stuff. And you just said the media influences people to do stuff. You can't have it both ways. Both mediums might suggest something, but it's still a person who acts upon it that is the real one at fault.
For some reason, when Cream's 'white room' played near the end, I decided that this was brilliant.
I was waiting for you to talk about the fear the critics had about the movie... finally someone talking sense, thank you!!
The part where the boss is yelling at him and they close up on him smiling was the creepiest thing I've ever seen.
I thought the same and my friends couldn't remember that scene it was so unnerving!
Sonicsubzz i see it more as his ironic anthem. He’s fresh off a murder and he’s feels reborn and free and is grooving to one of the biggest songs of the 80s. It’s a twisted mans twisted freedom ya know?
S A that scene with most other actors would have been odd but Joaquin sold it incredibly
I usually put that face whenever my boss starts yelling at me for shit that wasn’t in my control but can’t say anything because I got bills to pay. Don’t act like I’m crazy most of you do the same thing probably. 😊😂
S A That opening scene was creepy as fuck too
When you give me my oscar, can you introduce me as Joker?

@@AryanSharma-gm4cv because it's like the millionth time it's been commented
Actually, I don't think the movie really made it clear that Penny (Joker's mother) made it all up, what the movie made clear was that Joker believed in the official story written up by the hospital (which Penny denied and which could've easily been the portrayal Wayne wanted to show to the public, which in turn is something very plausible seeing that Thomas Wayne has all the motives of protecting his image and wealth).
There was nothing in the movie that points to Penny's insanity, yet there are points in the movie of Thomas Wayne and the rich'es disregard for the poor and their goals of gaining more power.
@14:14 You just hit all the right words man. That is EXACTLY the vibe I got from The killing Joke. And that is the spirit of the Joker-Batman relation I think. I've just suscribed.

Joker, in this movie, does remind me of Alex in Clockwork Orange. Maybe just in his face but a lil bit in his demeanor.
And I'm sure Malcolm McDowell would love his Clockwork Orange character being compared with the modern Joker!
I really like your thoughts on this movie and what the joker represents as a character. It helps putting things in perspective for me.
