  • I found some lead in the woods and cast it into ingots for a future project. The ancient lead pipe was a pretty nice find! I probably should have kept it as a whole piece because it's kind of rare. Oh well. It's going to be made into something new at some point. I hope you guys enjoyed the video! Casting lead is so easy due to it's low melting point. Be careful and where your hair protector!!! :'D (reference form the video) Also that naked baby scale is something else right?? LOL Stay tuned for more! Don't forget to click the bell beside the subscribe button so you are notified of future uploads from me.
    Keep exploramenting and thank you for watching!

    Wonderful video. Two bits to keep you safe. Please avoid doing this activity in the presence of moisture. Water and hot lead are a dangerous combination producing explosive reactions that spatter lead in all directions. Also consider a stable base that gets your project up off the ground so you need not bend over the pot. Best Wishes...

    The lead parts you picked up are from an old type roof flashing they use to use and of course lead plumbing pipes. But good job collecting it and reusing it. The reason for the different sounds is because the wheel weights are alloyed with other metals making them a lot harder. The roof flashings is basically pure lead and therefore will be heavier but also much softer then the wheel weight muffins.

  • @MaturePatriot
    @MaturePatriot 6 років тому

    A small marble sized piece of bee's wax is what I normally use. Great work on the reclamation and recycle of the lead. Wheelweight would include tin, and Antimony, in the alloy.

    That "lead plum-bob" is actually a type of fishing sinker, the shape helps it dig into the bottom so it doesn't wash away.

    I enjoy your videos, you are a bright kid. You dont need that much heat to melt lead, You can melt it on the stove top, Also, lead oxide is extremely poisonous, Wear a respirator, and dont hand the dross that you skim off the top. Wear thick leather boots and leather aprons and chaps when casting metals or you will have a bad day, sooner or later, Take care, really loved your IC engine project.

    Yeah, I think the wheel weights probably have a bit of zinc or tin in them to make them a little harder. I've found lead in the woods before too, but there's probably less of it here in Minnesota than where you are in PA just because of European settlers having lived there longer. My great great great grandpa was a lead miner in Illinois in the 1840s though.

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  7 років тому +3

      You're probably right about the zinc from the wheel weights. That's cool that your grandpa was a miner! How long did he live?

    • @jrsoct24

    • @Harley365

      No zinc in lead wheel weights. Only tin and antimony. Zinc and lead wont mix both have differeny melting temps and will not combine correctly

    If you go to a car repair station where they sell a lot of tires, you can usually get them to give you a bucket of tire weights for free. then you can melt them down easily.

    You might want to buy or make some tongs to grip the bottom of your crucible to make pouring easier for yourself. Maybe just screw a big hose/pipe clamp to some flat steel.

    Remember that soft lead is worth more than hard lead. It's impossible to make lead soft after it's hard. But soft lead can easily be made hard. And please don't turn it into fishing weights and throw it in the water and pollute the water. Make fishing weights out of something else.

      Possibly. Probably some zinc from the wheel weights too.

  • @aaronreash814
    @aaronreash814 7 років тому +2

    your roofing lead and maybe your radiation detector lead will most likely be pure, and the wheel weight batch (#3 when you had stacks) will have tin and antimony most likely in a 10:1 lead:tin ratio, that's what most people use for casting bullets is that ratio and wheel weights as long as you don't get newer zinc tend to be that ratio or close to 12ish:1 and people have to add tin solder to bump up the tin content for hardness. you prob alredy know lead is toxic so I wont hassle you as long as its ventilated and for the popping that's due to moisture if you put ur pan over the furnace for a min or so that'll go away

      Trenton Zelley lead salts and other compounds that can dissolve in water are the bad things. not much lead from the metal alone can be absorbed into the body. It's also long term exposure that does damage. a few exposures here and there are not that bad.

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  7 років тому

      Trenton Zelley at least that's my understanding

    • @thecatalog7188
