I,m a military vet, recovery specialist heavy material. Before using a winch cable, GREASE IT. Periodically clean and grease the cable. I like to first spray motorcycle chain lube on the cable and grease on top of that. That will allow less friction at the drum and the cable will spool real nice with no binding
Anything like that will do. There is a lubricant made specifically for cables too. Probably available at most auto parts stores but whatever you have around the shop should work

Is there a lubricant that you can use when winding it in for keeping it clean and preventing rust?
WD40? White Lithium grease?
