    Tip 1:
Look over your winch for corrosion, cracks, dents, freespool operation, rust, etc.
Tip 2: Freespool the winch cable out (be careful not to take it all the way out though). Then power it back in, then Power it out and back in again. If you have space and a good connection point, hook your winch up and let the weight of the ATV / UTV to power it back in with tension.
Tip 3: Check cable and clean it while its out. Check for cable frays, kinks, and other damage. Then (using the right kind and amount) apply some lubricant to the wire. For the full details on this, watch the entire video.
As a side note, always make sure to spend time spooling in your rope properly. Make sure it is spooled neatly and tightly to ensure smooth operation and safekeeping of the rope.

Once a year I would recommend for those who are mechanically inclined to remove the winch and disassemble the gear box side. Clean the old grease, dirt and debris out and repack it with fresh grease. For those who ride in water conditions you would be surprised what seeps past the seals. Great basic video though on winch maintenance.
