How to Spool a Winch Cable

- Properly installing or "spooling" a winch cable is is one of the most important parts of proper winch usage. Spooling the winch cable means that the cable is evenly spread across the drum and doesn't overlap. This allows for much easier and much safer winching when you are out on the trails. Although this process is easier with more than one person, you can absolutely spool you own winch cable by yourself.

Winching up a slight incline is also a great alternative if you don't have a working parking brake
Synthetic line is so much nicer to use! It is definitely worth the extra cost. Switching from steel to synthetic will save some weight too. I don't think that he mentioned it, but the reason for tightly spooling the winch line is to prevent the loaded/working line from penetrating into the loose inner layer. If it pinches, it can damage the line and make it difficult to get the line off the drum.
Geez, I didn’t realize there was so much I had to do. I just picked up my first winch, installing when my bumper comes Monday. Supposedly, I have to wrap it with at least 1000 lbs and my manual says don’t unspool the last 10’ or the red colored section. Thanks for the video! I’m probably going to die.

Do the same for a steel cable?
Two clicks of the parking break is a bad idea for drum break vehicles, particularly the 4runner and Tacoma as they will lock up and bend if you winch through the locking. Use a hill instead for these vehicles.
