First time on inline skates. Begin on a grass, carpet or a mat (something that will not let your wheels roll easily). Practise standing up and falling. As you become more comfortable on your skates start focusing on your balance.
Basic Stride is broken up into three components.
1) Balance
2) V
3) Lift
Align your body by keeping your head up, arms in front and bent knees. Feet are placed in a "V" shape , 90 degrees apart. Lift your feet and maintain the same V shape. If you feel unsteady at any point put your hands on your knees to recover balance.
Intermediate stride builds off our basic stride by adding compression and one foot gliding.
Compression is bending of the knee and flexing of the ankles. Practise this by doing lemon drops. While practising the basic stride hold one foot off the ground for a few extra seconds. This will help you practise gliding on one foot. Next, practise push and gliding on grass or carpet. - Спорт
I have had my blades for only 1 week and day 7 is 20 times better than day 1.. I’m enjoying this new experience
Thank you, looking forward to day 7 😅
And it's funny that I'm sitting on the train right now bringing home a new pair of skates!!! Lol, I personally really appreciate you taking the time to make these videos Mr. Unwin, they really help people like me who gave up skating as a kid because it was too hard to learn and are now picking it up again as an adult. We really appreciate the help and encouragement :)
Boom! You can do it!
What skates do you get?
Nice! I like the Fusion because it is a plastic shell with more support. However, the weight can be an issue. Zetrablades seem like the perfect choice to build your skills.
I dont mean to be offtopic but does any of you know of a method to get back into an instagram account??
I stupidly forgot the password. I love any tricks you can offer me
@Travis Michael instablaster ;)
32 and 3rd day for me, never was able to learn as a kid. Doing my bucket list, not sure how to leave my husband's hand yet haha
I used to skate really well when I was a kid. 5-7 years old. I could run, jump and such. But I'm 17 now, I bought new skates, and gosh I'm so bad at it! i cant lift my legs up, I fell huhu. thanks for sharing the video, I'll try harder!
You can definitely do it. It just takes a bit of time and practise. If you can just practise 5 minutes a day you will improve very quickly.
Wow
oml sameeee
Lol same here! I used to skate when I was 16 , I wasn't great but I was decent, now at 33 I bought a new pair of inline skates to try to start skating again and I am terrible at it ! Had fallen a lot already. Hope thise videos work ! Not giving up :)
I am over fifty and just learning the basics, if I can do this, you sure can too.
This is the best skating video for beginners. Unlike other videos/folks, you are teaching it with beginner''s mindset - thus we can relate to your lessons better. Thank you!
I just ordered my first pair of skates here goes nothing!!! I'm so excited
Me, too! Roces Ego 3x 110's. At 54 years old, this should interesting; but if I'm gonna die, I want to be moving when I do it.
Me too I'm 21 nd I bought nivia speed skates
How did yall do?? I just bought 3x110mm Fila. I havent skated since I was a kid!
@@Mvb2024 Me too. Havent skated since kid and bought 3x110. How was your first time?
I've watched tons of videos teaching beginners how to skate, but this is definitely the best and most detailed one I've found so far! Thank you for making this video, it really helps!
Never skated. Owning pair or roller blade since almost a decade. Finally thinking to try. This is THE ONLY VIDEO that’s explained soooo well. Thank you. I feel confident n not scared. Will put an update once I’ve tried. Thank you . Glad I found this video
I didn't realise my balance was so poor until I started skating this week. I want to cry. Will it ever get better? Watching this video makes me tell myself yes ... so thank you so much Sean :-)
Great video.
Been skating for over 20 years but I used this as a guide to teach my daughter how to skate. Today was her first time on skates and she loved it, thanks!
I just got my pair of blades yesterday and I'm excited!! This video is really helpful!!!
That is great! Good luck on your skating journey. I will be making a new series, in the fall, on fundamental skills. Stay tuned.
Follow his video and you will be skating in no time! enjoy!
Thanks Jay. This teaching method has worked great for thousands of my students.
I teach language arts at a low income middle school, and somehow I got volunteered to teach an after school skating class. I have not been on a pair of skates since I was a teenager, I'm now 44. I went online, bought some inline skates, and then started searching the web for tips and tricks on how to skate. Your channel has been a life saver! I watched your videos over and over, then after school I would find an empty parking lot and practice what you taught. I am now mildly competent when I teach the class. Many of the students are much better skaters than I am, but thanks to your videos, I'm able to give them pointers and help them learn some new tricks. THANK YOU!
Thank you a lot for such a full tutorial! I like that you break the training in several sections and you actually explain 'how to'
I’ve been on my skates twice now and I still watch your beginner vids before I go out. Keep up the great work!
You're one of the best, most clear teachers of rollerblading. Really appreciate the way you break the movements down into "cues". Thanks!
Just bought my first pair of roller skates so I've been searching and watching a lot of videos to help me learn. This is probably the best, most in-depth video I've seen. Thank you!!
I am 28 ...never did skating before... have already fallen numerous times still trying to stand firm.... Thank u for sharing the video...will try the approach for more perfection... Cheers
Thank you for this! I was having issues with my stride and these drills got me further in one day than an entire week of trial and error by myself
THanks man....im starting this and is important to know stuff and you have a easy and calm way to explan it. Keep going
hi shaun. started skating one week ago (45 yrs old) been using this tutorial as my main guide. just like to say that the" holding your head up and looking forward" point really helped me today, instant improvement. to all beginners once you get over the having to look at the ground in front of you stage then use that. thanks for all the inspirational videos. Namaste my friend.
Awesome video! Thank you. There's a couple of things I been doing wrong, this helps a lot. You're a great teacher. I hope to see more videos of these series!
Thank you my friend. Really appreciate the nice comment. Very motivating.
Perfect training video. Thank you
Love your instructional steps, well detailed and presented. Was easy to follow, Thank you!!
This is a good refresher for the basics. I'll be practicing the glide today.
This was an amazing video. So detailed and compassionate. I feel very excited and confident to learn. Thanks 😀
I love your energy ! Thanks for sharing with us
Wonderful tutorial. Thank you 😊!
I started the hard way. Waaay into my adulthood, avoiding all fundamentals, and just using terrible form for many months on end. Now that I have a better grasp, I can really appreciate this video. I love to show people how to skate.
You are a great rollerblading teacher
Just got a pair of rollerblades for my 40th birthday! I'm going to try these tips out today. Thanks for this!
Love your videos - thank you so much for creating these tutorials!
Thank you so much. I've been practicing skating for several days now trying to do the forward stride but I had a hard time balancing becuase I just couldn't start moving. Your first step about easing in and useing the v thing IT WORKED!!! It literly took me about 10 minutes of that to help me get comfortable with the balance and I was able to do a nice forward stride within and hour that really helped me. I'm learning how to skate in order to be able to travel and wanted to make sure I'm confident enough by the end of the month I'm writing this (augest the 18) thank you so much. You saved me from so many falls. So many people teaching seem to just ignore that little step with the v. It makes the huge difference thank you!!!!
That is awesome. Keep it simple and practise, practise, practise. Head up, arms in front and focus on the rhythm of your feet.
Shop Task my feet strarting aching, after 15 minutes trying to stride,, any sugestion for warmup ? So that my feet less painfull during th exercise
Something I do is I stand and lift my body using just my feet I do about 20 times. And just to get used to the skates I cheated and made it so my feet were tilted inwards a bit. Once you gain momentum and you are getting good it's best to drop that habit.
What a great teacher he is👍✌
I loved your video! Thank you so much!
i´ve been practicing with your videos for about 1 year, i hope i can go to your shop one day :) thank you for your videos!
Very useful when you try it first time. Great job!
I just started lessons with Shaun and he is amazing. He is so patient and the lessons are so much fun. By next summer I will be flying on the path ways. Thanks Shaun
That’s right Lisa! You will crossing the pathways soon.
Thank you, the best explanation on how to skate in youtube!!
I have been skating ( hockey) since I was a kid. I just moved to a place where it is warm all of the time and I am going to be inline skating for the first time. I am fairly competent with skating and I just watched your video. I am now determined to start skating and want to thank you for making it easy for me to decide that this was the right way to go. Again my thanks.
Love the videos, I've purchased my first pair of inline skates today and took them out onto the smoothest surface i could find! I was able to get moving forward! I am going to watch this before i go out again to practice
Yeah! Awesome. I am excited for you.
Oh man, this is perfect to encourage my mum to do it!! I always wanted to skate but I don't feel sure enough yet (I've got my knees injures), so I need to improve my balance. Hope someday I can do tricks, dancing and feel comfy on wheels. Thank you!!
Use to skate daily 20 some years ago, now I'm 66, miss skating so much, had to rebuild my Bauer inlines. It's like I'm a beginner, but not even close to giving up. Thanks for the very informative vid, and I really like your philosophy. ...."If you can walk, you can skate".
Just bought a new pair of Bauers today, Im 44 and used to adore inline skating
Thank you! This is what I needed!
I really appreciate the gentle guidance of this youtuber, you Sir. I am new here and have zero knowledge with this. I want to learn something new in this pandemic and found rollerskating beautiful. Your way of teaching is very calming and assuring. I will give it a try once I find a wide flat platform. Thank you so much. I just received my first pair of rollerblades this afternoon when I came across this video. Thank you again sir. Much respect and regards.
Thank you so much just went skating for my first time yesterday. So scary but exciting to keep trying.
I just started rollerblading, and watched lots of videos on UA-cam. But yours is the most helpful... thank you for the effort

Que legal! Ótima aula!!!
Nice video , I'm started recently and one of the great key is" ben your knees" or stay low "pinto pony".
Thanks Shaun.
Knees bent and Head up!
Awesome Thank you for explaining it nicely and easily.
What a great instructional video. I just followed the motions without skates, and I plan to practice to this video when my new skates come in on Wednesday! Balance-V-Lift! Thank you for providing such helpful info so as to introduce more people to this incredibly cool sport!
That is amazing. Thank you for sharing. You just made my day.
Balance V lift
All your videos are awesome dude,,its so cool how you get so much information across,,even little tiny details, without sounding patronizing in any way,,Its easy when your really good at something (like you are) to just go through the motions assuming everyone can do it,,as is with Virtually every other tutorial ive watched..your a brilliant teacher and seems like a really nice bloke to boot,,,I cant thankyou enough for teaching me how to skate and sharing the knowledge that must have taken you years to master,,,god bless my friend,,,sending a massive virtual fist bump from the uk....Namaste,,,
Very good Video. Just bought my first pair of roller blades. took them out and fell twice LOL. I should of watched the video first lol. Balance, V and lift. works wonderful for me. Thank You again. Good teacher!
Awesome video. Thank you so much for this. I am gonna finally gonna take a serious effort to learn to skate.
First time watching ur vids and ur a really good teacher, I can understand fully what I need to do
Just over 20 years ago I stopped playing ice hockey and have never been on inline skates in my life, today at the age of 43 my first pair of inlines arrived and boy it's a wierd feeling. Thanks for putting up this video it will deff help me get balance and confidence as I learn. p.s. I got Powerslide Phuzion Xenon 100 Trinity (they really like a long name lol)
Vid help me out a lot, thanks
Excellent video! Thank you so much for taking the time to create it ^-^
The predator stance is so awesome, i feel completely safe standing like that, and purposely falling really shows you how falling isn't too bad and gets rid of so much fear! Excellent work sir! Iam learning to skate up and down in a 12 ft wooden floored kitchen! I'm flying through it thanks to your videos man, I'm in my 40s too so don't hold back anyone, go for it, i need some of that wizardry in my life, I fell in love with the look of it and here iam on the journey to get there! (hell of a long way to go yet!) I'm videoing my progression so I can show that you can learn in your house, i did try learning outside but people watching really put me off! Now I will step outside fully trained haha. I will upload them one day soon, anyway, back to the kitchen!! NAMASTE 🙏❤️
Im 49 and recently got skates, I use to do ice skating, and thought it would be easy.....wrong! Ive had 3 practise lessons so far. Im lucky as I work in a school as a caretaker, and have access to a gym and sports hall, plus the areas outside. I started on the sports hall floor as it was soft, but quickly moved to the gym floor which is more firmer......and it as much better, if a bit more unsafe (harder). Im now getting the basic forward skating, and looking forward to the next stage!
this is great thank you
Awesome video, thanks loads 🙏
I got a pair of inline skates about 9 years ago, only ever used them inside on carpet. Today for the first time in about 7 years, I tried skating again. This time on concrete. It was so much fun! I didn't fall at all either. Binged a lot of your episodes before trying. Helped a ton.
I am so happy for you! Great job.
Thank you so much 💕
Practice how to fall properly is quite brilliant!
This was genuinely so helpful! You broke it down perfectly, thank you so much. Is there a video that follows on from this?
Thanks you helped me so much you are great
You the best bro.!!

Good stuff!
I've been skating for 7 years and currently have the Metroblade GMs. This video was interesting for me because I don't remember learning this.

Great video thank u
I like the beginning 😊
Wow 😃. you said namaste at the end . 🙏
I know this video is 3 years old but these are great tips. I plan on learning to skate with my 5 year old daughter. I’ve always wanted to learn so I figure my daughter and I can learn together.
Such a great teacher Shawn. Good job bud.
Thanks brother! You are the man.
Awhile back you road some staircases forwards and also backwards in a video. You made it look pretty easy I might add. Have any tips for a guy trying to add it to his repertoire. I watched Bill's tutorial on it quite a few times.. However I cant seem to get the courage to just tackle it lol.
Hey Michael. Riding stairs is way easier than it looks. However, the first go will always be scary as heck. When learning to stair ride it is all about finding the proper place to practise. You want to find stairs that are long with a small drop.
When riding forward down stairs you want to practise gliding with weight in your heels, feet in a slight scissor. When riding down the stairs you push through your heels into the stairs.
When riding backwards down stairs, (much easier than going forward) you want to practise gliding with weigh in your toes. Lean your shins hard into the cuffs of your skates. When approaching the stairs you want to look over the same shoulder as the foot that is leading, with your feet is a slight scissor.
Thanks dude. You will be first to know when I knock it out.
Boom!
It has to be first video of someone teaching how to start skating without "flexing" on a viewer. Thanks :)
+Paweł Bartoszewicz My pleasure. I hope to update this video
I have literally just recieved my skates today.....first time at Any recreational wheel sport......I'm super excited but also super scared......I will try out this technique thankyou........😅👍😉 and good luck to any other real first time beginners!
You are good, im just getting back yo skating in a long time, and its not easy. Thanks for the teaching
Glad to hear that you are back on the blades. Happy skating, my friend.
Thank you it was really a nice first video - I'll try soon with my brand new pair of skates.
Good luck my friend.
Thanks k you!!!
thank you for this video. I recently purchased some inline skates and tried to share for the very first time and this video was instrumental in my first time experience. I don't quite have the stance and confidence down, but I'm confident following this video will lead me to my goal. so again thank you.
Thank you for sharing. I would like to update this video soon with some more helpful tips. Please keep me posted on your progress.
Shop Task So quick update. using the techniques outlined in this video, I have improved a lot from square zero. I can successfully skate many laps at decent speed around my local tennis court in the park although I fear I can't skate on anything other than flat, smoothish surfaces. But I have two concerns I'd like advice on. although I can skate fairly ok, I've yet to get passed the feeling like I'm constantly on the brink of falling. anything advice for that or do I just need to continue practicing? second concern, I have the rollerblade zetrablades and after skating for a while my feet hurt like crazy to the point I can no longer continue. do you have any advice? other than that I am enjoying every moment I get to skate. thank you again for this video and the advice already given.
I just got back into skating after not doing it for years so I'm learning all over again lol
Wow hell of a teacher namaste
Namaste
well done and thank You. Appreciated Stephen Australia
Thank you my friend.
Just got my first inline skates this week. Flying Eagle BKB 5s. Hope all can go well. Hehe never skates before. A little bit nervous. Wish me luck.
Last week, our First Lesson was practicing the Duck Walk on Rollerblades & I'm still a bit nervous.
Our Beginner's Inline (outdoor lessons) are held (once a week) on Wednesdays.
I like it bro..👍👍👍👍
