How to activate Pioneer steering wheel controls

- Here's a tip on how to activate your steering wheel controls on your Pioneer Car audio/video unit. To complete this step you must have the park brake wire connected (or grounded) and the steering wheel control wires of the car hardwired to the PIONEER AV unit (applicable models, see your user manual for details, if your manual says 'steering wheel interface ready' you will need a third party steering wheel interface adapter). Use the cheat sheet at the link below to find out which wires on your car you need to connect to.

You bloody beauty. I thought the money i spent on an adapter to enable steering wheel controls was wasted. Nowhere did it mention this hack in the manual. Been travelling without steering controls for a week since install. Many, many thanks!

Thank you!! After a service the controls stopped working and this video helped me get them set up again! I even managed to change the useless Mode button to AV Source, which helps immensely.

Thankyou, through doing that trick i worked out my handbrake signal wire wasnt getting signal... frustrating as hell, but its all sorted now :)

Mate I can’t thank you enough!! My car was worked on a few weeks ago and the controls stopped working. Pulled the stereo apart and was also pulling my hair out at the same time.

Tip would be to select to set up with adapter as a guess then if it's not automatically set up opt for manual setup without adapter.

Hi. I have PIONEER DMH-A340DAB there is no option "source off " I don't have even "steering wheel control" option. But that model have option to use steering wheel control. But is not exist in the menu. So except throwing to trash bin that trash radio what I can do? Pionner is not responding at all.

I run the AVH-ZL5150BT in my FJ and love it! I was wondering if you know if it can be set to power on only once the vehicle is running?
The problem is, I usually turn the ignition on and leave it until all electronic diagnostics are completed before I turn the engine over. This causes the unit to power on, shut down and power on again every single time. This is quite annoying as I’ve got the screen position set at an angle.
I know this can be controlled in some of the Kenwood units, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to set the delay on this.
Does it work on your FJ without an adapter?
I think you need to have the ignition wire on the unit connected to a sensor that outputs 12v (or 14.4v in this case) only when the engine is running. If your car doesn't have an output you can get an device that splices into your CANBUS or plugs into your OBD2 socket, and outputs a voltage once the engine is running.

Hello! Great video 🙂 I have a Mazda 3 BL and pioneer z5350bt head unit. Purchased step 1 & 2 of the corresponding Aerpro harnesses, followed your video but still, steering wheel controls are not working. Ive tried unplugging everything and plugging back in again but the menu option is still greyed out and I cannot select it. Do you have any other tips?

I am just bought the dmh-340dab radio but there are some problems with the menu and i mean that when i touch the settings button it opens a menu with less options than it had to be. For example there is no list of options with the "star" in front of them as you show in this video. Is there a possibility that I have to "unlock" something in the menu?
Happen to disconnect my battery had same issues with Sterring control not working….it seem I can’t locate we’re source page is on video to turn it off as you it was difficult to hold camera….any suggestions would be appreciated
