  • HbA1c is a blood test that shows how well you are controlling your blood sugar over time. It does this by taking a look at how much sugar is attached to your red blood cells. The more sugar that’s attached, the higher your HbA1c. In this video, I take a look at how this test works and ways to keep your results in the healthy range and avoid Type 2 Diabetes.

    Thank you Dr. Becky. I started watching your videos because I was diagnosed as diabetic with an A1c of 6.8. I did not want to start taking medications so looked to make lifestyle changes. Following your low-carb education/information I have now been on a low-carb diet for 16 months. I've lost over 60 lbs and my A1c is now at 5.8. You and your videos were so informative and provided the actual information I needed to start and to continue. You do make a difference and thank you.

    Thanks for the clarity Dr. Becky. Yeah, when I was first diagnosed T2 the dietician/nurse sat down with me and showed me with a mock-up test tube of what glycated Hemaglobin actually looked like. She turned it over several times to show how viscous it makes the blood.... Nooo thanks.

    I would add that a reliable A1c result is based on the NORMAL red blood cell life span of 120 days. Any interference in this lifespan skews A1c results up or down. For instance, patients with Sickle Cell anemia, or any hemolytic anemia lose their RBC’s unnaturally. Hemorrhage or any other significant blood loss will also give an unreliable low result. Blood donation, transfusion recipient? Both skew the A1c to the low side. Virtually all labs post a note with A1c results explaining this issue and yet some doctors STILL regularly order this test on their patients with known hemoglobinopathies.

    Never had any blood glucose problems until 2 days ago after my annual check-up when my A1C went from 5.5 to 5.9. However, my Fasting Blood Glucose is 92. How could that be?? Also, my cholesterol levels are perfect, in fact, went down from last year. Blood pressure still normal even though I gained 6 lbs in the last year. Am baffled about that. Will be seeing my PCP next Monday to try to figure out WTH is going on!

    • @beckygillaspy
      @beckygillaspy  4 роки тому

      You may want to discuss redoing the test in a month or so.

    • @karimaogden3875
      @karimaogden3875 4 роки тому

      @@beckygillaspy Thank You for responding! Yes, I will ask her. Most likely the A1C will need to be repeated since it is the higher of the two. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases website in the Section about Diabetes and Prediabetes Tests, it states that, "If the two different tests (FPG and A1C ) are discordant, repeat the test that is above the diagnostic cut point". We'll see what happens. I wanted to note though that the A1C test was done by a Pancreatic Surgeon at a teaching hospital because I have a small pancreatic cyst that has to be monitored yearly because it could turn cancerous in the future and I know that different labs have slightly different reference ranges, however, I realize that it is still possible my A1C will come back high even when I get retested by my PCP at the local hospital lab. I have already started making changes to my diet since I have a weakness about pasta.

    Question (and compliment): what is the efficacy of time-restricted feeding (eg, 16-20 hrs of fasting followed by an 4-8 hrs “feeding window”) and/or intermittent (24-72 hr) fasting for reducing A1C? And thank you for an extremely informative, easy-to-understand, and helpful video! I appreciate you explaining the science and providing practical guidance.

      Anaemia or other blood disorders affecting the lifecycle of the red blood cell will impact the results or make the HbA1C difficult to measure properly
