It's important to note that both plants are technically Latifolia, but different species. The one referred to as just Latifolia is formerly known as Macrophylla, while the Sarawaks full name is actually Latifolia sp. Sarawak!! So they are related!! I also have the classic "dinner plate" Latifolia, which looks like the Loyceandrewsiana I mentioned. I'm happy to do another video comparing that one as well when it grows!! ☺️😋🥰

I love these videos! You explain things so well. Funny story-I was listening to a plant podcast and they were discussing Scindapsus species. The one thing they couldn’t figure out was what made the plants “sparkle”. I had to laugh bc, thanks to you, I know how that happens! 👍

Are they different species or the same species but different gene expression? I'm actually really confused lol. They have identical flowers from what I can tell. Similar to lacunosa, all same species but like 20 varieties, same flowers different leaves?
They're both Latifolia species discovered in different places. There are many varieties of Latifolia. And yes same with Lacunosa, and many other Hoya species, even just Carnosa has many, many different varieties 😬

These are not different species :) the species name for both is latifolia. Sarawak is a region where the species is found. Some clones are called sp.”Place Name” before they are identified, but these are two clones of latifolia (of which there are many)🌱. The shape and size changes wildly depending on how they are grown.
Hoya Macrophylla Wight was the name for latifolia G.Don for a couple of years almost 200 years ago, but since another species named Hoya macrophylla Blume had already been published, it needed to be revised long ago and caused lots of confusion for many decades 😝🌱.
I'm aware that they are both Latifolia, and I'm aware of the region sp. Sarawak comes from. But what you say makes no sense, they "are not the same species" but then in the next sentence you said "where the species comes from". They look different, so they get different names or else it's very confusing for buyers and sellers. I'm not a botanist, I may use terms incorrectly at times, but by calling it sp. Sarawak that makes it a different species or else they'd all just have the same name.
I can tell very distinct differences between the two, especially in their veining and the way they sun stres, even when the Latifolia gets larger and more heart shaped. I have quite a few of both plants in my greenhouse and even the feel of the leaves are different 🤷🏻♀️
Always appreciate extra info, but I would need to do my own research on this because they don't look anything alike to me.

I understand what you're saying now lol. I thought you were saying its the same plant. I just use the word species bc its in the name of the plant lol. I use it interchangeably with variety and other words. Scientifically, I know that's not how it works though lol

I don’t know if you collect verticillata, too, but that species is my fave example for crazy amounts of phenotypic variation within a single species that makes them look totally different to us as collectors but isn’t ultimately taxonomically relevant. Hoyas are just crazy like that 🤯.
