Nice to see ya! 😁 I propagate Hoya the exact same way, but with perlite! I like how you don’t have to stress about removing all the perlite when potting the cutting into soil. I’m grow all my plants in soil so I have to try your method just going straight in!
Red mites are the worst. Or that is what most people call them 😂 But we all mean the same - small, orange/ red, incredibly hard to spot, and they attack new growth. And the dark/ light test works too! Also you can use damp cotton pad and wipe the bottom and tops of the leaves (typically towards the new growth) and you will see them on the white cotton pad. They are tough to kill but what works for me and all the collectors from Sweden (where I got this tip from) is to use sulphur based fungicide (that also works as acaricide). The one I use is called Kumulus. Usually one treatment kills them, but I do it twice. It leaves white deposit on the leaves that you can always see on my hoyas 😂 but I don't care, it kills the bastards. There is a more insidious type of mite that burrows in the tissue of the new growth and that one is basically a death sentence. The Swedish collectors call those top shoot mite, but I am having a hard time pinpointing which exact mite it is 🤔
I rarely ever see them on leaves. Just the stem and around new leaves on the petiole. I'm going to look into the fungicide because honestly they need to DIEEEEEEEEEEEE
@@KnotDude they will mostly go for the cute baby leaves 🥲 Burn them with fire 😂 PS I don't use drainage holes when I propagate hoyas pls don't disown me 😂
When insects get crazy I put a plant into a larger plastic bag lightly spray garden insect spray into it, tie it up and leave for 2 days or more then repeat in 10 to 20 days. Works like a charm.
I am a new hoya own. Long time fan but I gave in. They all 3 are small cutting so this is long distance advice. But.... the soldering iron tip is magic I will be trying that out. I had been useing a lighter and a screwdriver. I have a soldering iron so will give it a go. I like to use odd pots for my outdoor plants and it's a huge pain with a lighter. Thank you so much
Perfect timing! I just got my first hoyas yesterday. A fully rooted compacta carnosa, and linearis cuttings! I put the linearis right in soil like you suggested. Thanks adam!
Omg I've been saying there is something I know I have that will work and then u show me Bobby pins. Awesome thank you this whole video is great and informational
The Silver Dollar is so pretty😍 Still looking for a Varigated Obavota like yours. lol 2 yrs later. 😀 I don’t think it’s the mites your talking about, but have found tiny mites, I think is coming from the orchid bark. Your new channel sounds like fun, traveling an exploring. 😀💚
Put your bark in the oven at 350 degrees for thirty minutes to kill anything that might be living in the bark. Let cool before using it for your plants. Hope this can help others.
I am a soil person. I consider trying leca, but haven't done it yet (something new to learn and I know what I'm doing with my substrates). But I have bought several hoya starts from local peeps that were rooted in leca. I leave them in leca while they acclimate to my home. When they are ready for up-potting, I just move it all into my chunky soil mix, leaving the leca the roots are attached to. I think people over-think the transition to soil from leca. Just don't disturb those baby roots. Make a basket with fingers, lift it all up en masse, and put it in your preferred substrate. Hasn't failed me yet.

I could be wrong but I think what you have is false spider mites. They appear reddish orange and they don’t make webs. They are crazy small so seeing them is nearly impossible. They sometimes leave trails on the leaves that look like a wrinkly indentation. They tend to go for the sweet spots right we’re leaves connect too. And they love new growth! not me literally finding your channel a week ago right before you posted the botanical garden tour (on the same day i went to a botanical garden in san diego what!!) and now you’re back love that for us!!!!!
I have alot of Hoyas in moss as well as other plants but I've just gotten back into leca and just tried perlite. I do Hoya the same way as you do. I totally love Hoya and wish I had nurseries in my area that carried Hoya but I don’t so I have to either find at big box or a person selling some in area. I’ve got 14 different ones so far and will keep hunting more. Hoyas are awesome plants.
The only Hoya I’ve cut was my Hoya Bella. It is in soil and I cut it and just stuck it back into the mother plant and so far it’s growing. Really enjoy your video and your updates🤗
I also had mites that left knobby growth and had to throw away three favorite Hoya. I had this problem for probably at least a year before I understood what was causing it. It was awful! I've started over with more tiny plants. Thanks for the tips on spotting them.
Hooray!!! I was so excited to see a video from you. I hollered to my husband, "Hey! My guy is back! ❤ I haven't seen him all by himself in a video in forever!!" He was like, "Okaaaaaaayyyyy....... 🙄" 🤭
I had those mites this summer. They came in an albo. I did neem, alcohol, Captain Jack's Dead Bug Brew and Bonide systemic. I finally got rid of them but it took months. Now I feel like I need to check all my hoya that were near it. I feel like my growth was slow this summer.
Great to see you again! So annoying and disheartening for you to have to deal with these pests! It feels so overwhelming when you have that many plants! I definitely will be checking out your new channel!
Hi. I'm on a self inflicted 90 day no plant purchases ugh. But I do love my propogations. Just as much as propogation videos. This one gave me a good suggestion or two. Ok 3 good suggestions. Thank you 🌱❤️🌱❤️🌱❤️
Thanks for sharing about the mites! I’ve had some unidentified pests that I couldn’t figure out that I suspect were mites, also. A few applications of a water, alcohol, and dish detergent mix seemed to deter them pretty well. Hope your Hoya are on the road to recovery!
The Hoya king returns!!!! What an awesome and super informative video, Adam. Hope to see another one soon. Maybe full plant room tour update!?😊🤞🏼 but if not, I’ll catch you on potted together 😘
Hey, Adam! Great to hear from you! Thanks for the video. I just wanted to pass on some info about a method for spider mite eradication from miss orchid girl. She has videos (several- gotta find the right one) on the subject. Granted, it’s for spider mites on orchids but I wonder if it may work for your nondescript mites on hoyas or other plants. She actually has 2 methods that both work on the same principle: smother the bastards. One is a mineral/paraffin oil based mixture and one is plain old leaf shine in a can. I’ve had instant success with my orchids (flat leafed phals) and some success with hoyas and other plants. With the others, I have to be more diligent about application since there are more leaves that are not flat expanses like the Phal ( more nooks and crannies). I’ve been lazy after bringing my plants ( hoyas, Phils) in from outdoors and things are getting a little outta hand. These are the methods I will try first. Just a long winded FYI. Good luck on your pest mgmt. 😊
I had a similar thing and I could never find any information on it and thought it may have been a weird Aussie bug. I could tell something was weird when I saw orange spots on paper towel when I wiped down leaves. Thanks for sharing.
I use whatever is closest to me whenever I’m propagating 😅 Which is usually sphagnum moss, Leca, or just water. Sometimes rooting hormone. Always have my bin (with ventilation holes) on a heating mat, under a grow light, which are both on a timer. Just have to make sure it doesn’t dry out. Also, those goofy looking glasses may be helpful with hand pollination 🙃
HEYYYY you are the first person who I’ve seen use the same lil Bobby pins that I use! 😅 I don’t notice rust or anything weird after a long time in the soil, I also feel like they’re more sturdy due to the zigzag on the sides. Lol
It sounds like we’ve been tackling the exact same orange mite problem at the same time 😓 I’ve found them on three Hoya and like six sansevieria, ugh! Thanks for the tips, the first treatment didn’t do much but the second one I tried has helped a lot 🤞🏻
I have posted numerous pics of those tiny orange pests. People keep telling me they are aphids! I use full strength rubbing alcohol in the sprayer! And use qtips to remove them. I have been using them the alcohol sprayer every two weeks as preventative and have been pest free for over a year!! I hope this helps. And as for propagation I use the prop box like yours with damp sphagnum moss and have roots in just a week or two every time. Then pot them up!!!
I'm curious if you can see your mites with your eyes. The ones I've been dealing with are not visible with my eyes or a camera so maybe they are not the same. My macro lens is 10x magnifying and I can barely see them with that as well.
Hey! Happy to see you! I am so glad your plants seem to be rid of the pest! Hopefully they continue to improve! I can't wait to see your travel vlog ❤️
You literally made my day at the 1/2 way point. Came across his video and suddenly you were saying your goodbyes and I thought... Wait what, we're barely 50% in. And then you start with the shot of tequila and the words start coming!!! Just subscribe to your channel, can't wait for more
Hi Adam! So good to see you! I love your videos and am hoping you can find time to do more. I didn't realize that you can get roots on the stems of hoyas, too. I don't think anyone has ever shown, or talked about that before. It's good to know. I hope you can get rid of those mites! Yuck! Can you just propagate hoya leaves with any success? I'm wondering because I just cut the last 3 vines off of my large hoya and had some nice leaves that I put in some damp sphagnum moss in a closed container. The rest of the plant just started dying, so I'm hoping to save the rest of it. I'll definitely subscribe to your new channel! It sounds like it will be fun. I'm glad you and Steve are able to do some fun traveling. I'm looking forward to your posts of your trips. Thank you so much for sharing!
Hi Sandy! You can root Hoya leaves and they will stay in good condition however it will rarely grow another vine unless there was some stem material in the cutting. If not, it will just stay a leaf.
@@KnotDude Hi Adam! Thank you, again, for your reply! I would prefer them to vine, so may just throw them away because there is no stem. They were the leaves I removed from the vines. I wish I would have known about leaving some stem on them, but I do now! Thank you!
So glad to see you posting a new vid! I've been struggling with those orange mites as well and they suck. Have used Captain Jacks, Bayer Advanced Insect, Disease and Mites and now your alcohol/water spray. It's gotten better with every treatment but man do I want those little suckers gone! LOL Video ideas: I would love to see an update on your plants, perhaps compare with the haul video? So happy to have you back!
OMG... so happy to see you back. Those glasses are hilarious. I'm now going to check my Krimson Queen again it seemed to have stopped growing in the last month or so. I'm all for watching your travel channel.
Great video. Pest infestations are definitely character building! Hopefully your luminous micromites are endemic to the Americas and can't survive cool temp locations in Australia. Re other video's - I'd love to see your current collection and wish list plants.
Wow beautiful silver dollar! Is there a link to where you purchased it? I also use a prop box but use a brick if coco coir that I hydrate and just stick the cuttings in. I usually put a small shot glass of water in to keep the humidity up. This has been fantastic and the cuttings can be transferred to leca, pon, soil or any other mixture easily. I get them at the dollar store so I have more to spend on Hoyas, lol.
Adam, have you tried a jeweler's loupe for pest inspection? Hold your infested plant over a clean sheet of white printer paper. Tap the foliage as vigorously as necessary to dislodge the mites. You'll see specks. Now, use the loupe to get a close view. Also, try using the camera on your smart phone and enlarging the resulting photos. Lastly, and most fun, buy a kid's microscope set! Get your sample bugs and place them on a slide and you'll be floored at the detail! You can also look at the tiny details of flower and leaf tissue as well as everyday small objects that might amuse you. You can get a junior microscope on Amazon for $85 - $100 if so inclined. I got it for my kids in 2005. They got bored. I still take it out and play with it!
It sounds like you are describing the false spider mite. They create pitting in some orchids leaves and are very common in orchid growing. Checkout Miss Orchid Girl. Danny has an organic recipe she uses on thick leaf orchids.
I’ve been struggling with a Hoya Australis Lisa that I purchased recently. All the things you described are happening. I tried separating the healthy parts from the diseased parts and put them in leca. Unfortunately, one of them is still diseased. You have given me hope as I have all the supplies to spot (hopefully) and treat my once beautiful Hoya. Thanks for a great video. One question- did you just throw the diseased part away or did you tried to quarantine and prop what could be saved? I hate the idea of throwing away a salvageable plant.
@@KnotDude Thank you. I looked for pests, but didn’t find any. The dropping leaves are perplexing. I’ll try to prop the remaining stem. At this point there’s nothing to lose.
You could have used high concentration azadirachtin (the active compounds in neem oil) based products like AzaSol or AzaMax. They are really effective on mites.
Hey Adam! Thank you for the vid. I have never propagated one of my hoyas and this was helpful! Just to be sure I'm understanding correctly, you are saying that I can cut anywhere along the stem to propagate (rather than finding a node, or in the case of some plants like string of hearts, having to cut off a couple leaves and stick the area the leaves were cut from in the soil)?
Yes that is correct. You will need a node with leaves for a successful prop but the node does not need to be in the potting media! Just the stem. Hoya are amazing :)
Glad to see your face and that you are doing your best! I am glad the flashlight, dark room works to see these. I tell people that is easiest way to see regular spider mites. Didn't you used to use systemic? Did you stop, am I crazy or did these bad boys get by it? ♥
I straight up stole 2 single leaf cuttings from my daughter krimson queen a couple of years ago. I stuck them in a local shop's company secret mix and thought "At least she still has the whole ass plant so, if this doesn't work I can steal more cuttings." Their mix is magic. It's a new whole ass plant now. Those red mites, I have no idea what they are but they are everywhere outside here, I have even seen them on my atv tires when it's sitting in my driveway.
You describing nudging the mites lmao... I have the little orange devils too and I do the EXACT SAME THING. i haven't seen them on my hoyas but they are loving my alocasias and philos ugh
When you poured bourbon into your propagation cup, put it down, and then pickup up the *same* cup but empty with drainage holes, that was like a magic trick
What have we done to deserve a Knot Dude upload? So happy to see a new video!

Do you remove the alcohol after a while or do you let it sit until next watering spray??

No i leave it be. It dries so fast it does no harm and my thought is if the pest can smell it maybe he won’t come there.

Thank you!
So good to see a great video. Missed your advice.
❤❤
I do love a good back side myself!!
You're in luck because the video I just posted today was an update on an old unboxing! Great minds think alike!!
When you spray with alcohol do you leave it on the plant or rinse it off?
Imagine my surprise pulling up YT and seeing Knot Dude first in my feed. ☺️ MADE MY DAY! Also… f@&% mites. 😒
Nice seeing you again Adam. Enjoyed this.
Good video Adam, thank you, glad you are well ☺️
OMG... so happy to see you back. Those glasses are hilarious. I'm now going to check my Krimson Queen again it seemed to have stopped growing in the last month or so. I'm all for watching your travel channel.
Hoping your queen is just being fussy and no mites are there!
Great video. Pest infestations are definitely character building! Hopefully your luminous micromites are endemic to the Americas and can't survive cool temp locations in Australia. Re other video's - I'd love to see your current collection and wish list plants.
Yay!!!! So happy to see another video! 🙌
I’m going to try your method!🤓🌱
Exactly what I was looking for w my Hoyas. Thanks. SUBSCRIBED 🌱❤🌱
Thank you! 🥰
Missed you! Love your Hoya content :)
Great info! Thank you. Appreciate you!
Hair pins! That's genius!
Love your tips
Could it be russet mites? I got those before and it sounds similar
I hope soon I'll have my plant tube video too!A Healthy Hobby And Nice Having Friends All Over The World! 👍
It sounds like you are describing the false spider mite. They create pitting in some orchids leaves and are very common in orchid growing. Checkout Miss Orchid Girl. Danny has an organic recipe she uses on thick leaf orchids.
That's the second suggestion I've had for her mix. I'll check it out!
I'm loving propping my hoya (or aroids, anything in fact) in fern fibre which is readily available in NZ
Yay!!! A video from Adam!!
My issue with my hoyas was not a disease, it was a pest. If it is truly diseased, I am not sure it will get better.
@@KnotDude Thank you. I looked for pests, but didn’t find any. The dropping leaves are perplexing. I’ll try to prop the remaining stem. At this point there’s nothing to lose.
What do you do with your plants when traveling? Water wise
@@KnotDude wow, okay! That sounds so easy! Thank youuu 😊
Glad to see your face and that you are doing your best! I am glad the flashlight, dark room works to see these. I tell people that is easiest way to see regular spider mites. Didn't you used to use systemic? Did you stop, am I crazy or did these bad boys get by it? ♥
I did use a systemic but not many systemics work on mites 😬 I was using it for a thrips scare but honestly those died really quick and easy
Yay 😍😍😍 I love Hoyas !
Nice to see you again 👏👏👏
Firstly, love that nail color. Second, I got the same hole tool thingy and now all of my planters look like Swiss cheese. 😂
Hahaha it's a fun tool!
Those magnifying specs tho! 😂😂
👀🤣
Nice to see you again🌺💚🙃
Adam, I may have missed it but didn't see the link for the plastic cups. Love your videos.
There is an Amazon link in the description that takes you to my storefront. They are in the list called "some like it pot" 🥰
so pretty
Good to see you! A second channel…… 😊 sounds like fun! 😉
Love love love your vids ADAM!
