This version is NOT the original from the early 70's. It appears to be a re-mixed version. The original sounds better to my ears. And the First track "Procession" which runs into this track is basically an introduction to this song, and should be listened to as part of it.

Yeah, I was waiting for Jamel's reaction to the bass dropping at about the 1 minute mark of the video and it just wasn't there. I appreciate different versions once in a while but this is in no way the better version of this song.

Geniuses yes, but not of prog. Geniuses of psychedelic pop-rock, elevating it to its highest form. You will never hear the controlled chaos of progressive jazz influences in the Moodies music. Their influences are pop, rock, blues and classical music. They transposed the sounds of pop, blues and rock over the sophisticated song structures found in classical music, and added a hint of psychedelia for good measure.
Pink Floyd wasn't prog either, though they're often mislabeled as such. King Crimson was the wellspring of progressive rock in the UK. The thing that all three of these contemporaries have in common is their psychedelic leaning.
Can you imagine living in the UK with those three bands on the rise?

This was my brother, Court's, favorite band. He passed away three years ago. He was on a pacemaker and only 15% of his heart worked and he was on a donor list.
I bought him tickets for his birthday in his thirties.
He was working on a car on jacks and an idiot "friend" kept sitting inside the car. My brother yelled at him to stop. He wouldn't, so my brother started to get from under the car, and he started to hear creaking as he was laying sideways, and the car came down and twisted his spine.
Even in excruciating pain, HE MADE THE CONCERT!!!
I worked event security and REALLY TRIED TO GET HIM BACKSTAGE.
He was HAPPY ANYWAY and kept yelling, "OWW!" as tears of JOY streamed down his face as he clapped wildly. WE WERE LAUGHING and I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT MOMENT. 👏🎉😂
I woke up around 1:45 CST and am sitting here laughing in my bed as I LITERALLY FEEL the lung cancer tha spread to up my spne and into my brain, MELTING away as I talk to him. We are connected SPIRITUALLY. NO LIE.
I AM ASTOUNDING DOCTORS AT VANDERBILT AND I WILL PUT TOGETHER PROGRAMS AND PACKAGES FOR CANCER PATIENTS TO BE BETTER INFORMED THAT ANYONE CAN GET IT WITH NO HISTORY AT ALL.
I have come face to face with so many SURVIVORS who ARE CANCER FREE.
      MITACLES DO HAPPEN.

These Moody Blues songs are a MUST ~ LEGEND OF A MIND, and RIDE MY SEESAW. Moody Blues music, much like Jethro Tull, ALWAYS lifts me up and puts me in a great mood! Never heard a song by either band that brought me down. The vocals on this version are VERY odd, almost like this is an early version that they redid, because the album version I'm familiar with sounds nothing like this, vocally. You should seek out other uploads of this song and you'll likely find a better one. However, I'm VERY elated that you're going down the Moody Blues rabbit hole, it's an extremely enjoyable experience! They are my favorite band.

I've been thinking about our fortune
And I've decided that we're really not to blame
For the love that's deep inside us now, it's still the same
And the sound we make together
Is the music to the story in your eyes
It's been shining down upon you now, I realize
Listen to the tide slowly turning
    Wash all our heartaches away
We are part of the fire that is burning
And from the ashes we can build another day
But I'm frightened for your children
And the life that we are living is in vain
And the sunshine we've been waiting for
    Will turn to rain
Listen to the tide slowly turning
    Wash all our heartaches away
We're part of the fire that is burning
And from the ashes we can build another day
Oh I'm frightened for your children
And the life that we are living is in vain
And the sunshine we've been waiting for
    Will turn to rain
When the final line is over
And it's certain that the curtain's gonna fall
I can hide inside your sweet sweet love

Moody Blues, the single most underrated rock band ever. People have them as this corny boomer favourite but man, the critics couldn't stand them, but you will rarely find a band with such an incredible gift for melody and with such a wealth of distinctive singers (which made their vocal harmonies the best in all pop music imho). Songs like this one prove that they could rock out too. And Justin Hayward was one of the very top voices in rock history. And they took the mellotron to unseen and unheard heights, thanks to Mike Pinder.
    They need to be vindicated.

Definitely a different mix than the version on the album Every Good Boy Deserves Favour (which is my favorite Moody Blues album). Wikipedia says it was released as a single first, and then put on the album, so the version I'm familiar with from the album was probably remixed.
The Moody Blues were known for thought provoking lyrics, hence the story you read about what prompted John Lodge to write I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band. For more of their thought provoking lyrics, I suggest:

    and
    The Voice
    ua-cam.com/video/uiPzKbT21Vc/v-deo.html
For videos, I would strongly suggest you do these versions of
    Your Wildest Dreams
    ua-cam.com/video/kmmPFrkuPq0/v-deo.html
    and
I Know You're Out There Somewhere
    ua-cam.com/video/cjImFYf2Vzc/v-deo.html
    back to back.
They are much later in the band's discography, and were released two years apart on different albums, but the video director decided to tie them together as a story, which works.
I agree with a previous commentator who said to do Procession merging in to The Story In Your Eyes from the album. Procession is a history of evolution set to music.
    ua-cam.com/video/A6EFytM1sxM/v-deo.html
It has a reprise on the B side, as part of the song One More Time to Live:

I grew up in this period - many young people lived in fear of a nuclear word war 3 and a lot of that angst is subtly present in some of the music.
It was a horrible time due to the cold war and the fear that "our living would be in vain" and we would all die in a nuclear holocaust not of our making.
But it was a great time to grow up because of the music.

Back then music and dances with live bands got us jazzed for the future. The Moodies wee the group I listened to for hours in my bedroom. I still listen to them everyday.

They had nearly perfect harmony, helped invent progressive rock and were some of the first, if not the first, to continuously introduce philosophy into rock 'n roll, etc.
Also, through a number of their songs the term "fire" is used. It is arguably synonymous with the word "love."
