"It's more than music, its an experience." Great line Sushi, and completely accurate when referring to this band. Glad you listened to this.
Almost every Moody Blues song has very beautiful and deep meanings. Love them.
Listening to ANY Moody Blues is an experience...especially studio versions with full orchestration. They, in today's iteration, are still doing a great job in concert.
Moody’s sound just takes you to another level.
Moody Blues- The Story in Your Eyes
They had seven albums in a row that were "concept albums" the entire album telling a story. This song is part of that... You should give a listen to one of them in it's entirety - preferably with head phones on, eyes closed and just let it wash over you... "Days of Future Passed", "In Search of the Lost Chord", "On The Threshold of a Dream", "For Our Children's Children's Children", "A Question of Balance" (Which this song is from), "Every Good Boy Deserves Favour" and "Seventh Sojourn"... This band (and these albums) were part of the founding of Progressive Rock...
You can get a “highlights” (maybe) Double Album. “This Is The Moody Blues” which has a picture of all of the album covers on the fron
@@richardanderson5424 Mr.Anders-- awesome tips!! In order please. These albums are story books. Their catalog spans time and space
Been awhile since I see someone list it accurately.
Not to mention they penned some of the most timeless, deeply ponderous lyrics in the entire history of pop n rock music.
Love Moody Blues since my teenage years, 67 now got to see them live back in 1990. was in high school when i first heard this song they sounded better live than any other group i got to see. 1960s and 70s best time music ever
I am 67 too, for a few more weeks. I got to see them in Austin maybe in the 80s? They had just gotten together again for a tour.
Richard Nelson- I saw in the 90's too. They had dueling drummers. *Amazing Experience!*
I’m 37. I love Moody Blues.
I'm 63 and also saw them in 1990 at the Playhouse in Edinburgh
Same, I'm 66, seen them 11 times .... One of my favorites
The Moody Blues - my all-time favorite group. And no one else in rock or pop has a voice like Justin Hayward's.
"70s" music phenomenal - and so diversified (more than any other decade)
The era of the 1960's and 70's was a time of experiment and innovation with music ... a magical time ...
In 1970, I was drafted into the U.S.Army. This album, along with their other music helped me to maintain some semblance of sanity.
So glad you are listening to them. They have an impressive body of work. I highly recommend you listen to more of their music. Tuesday Afternoon, Story in Your Eyes, I'm Just a Singer, The Voice. Sooooo many.
I can't believe you're reacting to Question, I love this song. Great job, you rock!
I saw them live over a dozen times and always accompanied with a symphony orchestra. They take you on a musical voyage. My favorite album is on the threshold of a dream. But it's hard to pick a favorite
Hey sushi I grew up in the 70s it was a great decade the moody blues has been my favorite band my whole life you should listen to the whole album question of balance it's awesome
This is in my top 10 greatest songs of all time
I think I was being conceived when I first heard the Moody Blues.
I was finishing up middle school (junior high, then) when this song came out in April of '70. This song got a lot of air play on the radio, and I remember it continuing through the summer. Carefree times, in the suburbs of San Francisco.
my mom used to play the Moody Blues on vinyl at night with all the lights off and just the glow from the player. it was a trip even as a kid.
Their entire "Question Of Balance" record is magical. Go ahead and jump down that rabbit hole. Justin Hayward and John Lodge have vocals like no other.
Omg, do more Moody Blues. I love them. Do the whole album, The Other Side of Life.
You should listen to the whole song sometime.
This was shortened by at least 30%
Try the studio version for the full experience!
you deserve a million subscribers. you understand our 70s experience. Not many younger people really feel the music and soul of the instruments. I wish I could experience it for the first time again.
I was in high school in the early 70s. "Knights in White Satin" was popular when I was a 6th grader. I love soooooo many of their songs, but absolute fave is "Forever Autumn".🥰
it was 1971 when I recall hearing this particular Moody Blues tune, was 11 years old and at my 1st kegger! a senior was telling me as long as he squeezed my ear I could chug beer (he was right! LOL! )-a few hours later I woke up in the bath tub! my first step into alcoholism! LOL! this band was awesome
The 70's music had everything! The Moody Blues music always had a sense of mystery to it- wise and poetic!! Justin Heyward's vocals were melancholy, unique, and lovely- they're instrumentation was just right to get their message across, but they could rock hard when they needed to!!
Yeah, I was 16 yoa in 1970, my brother was 2 yrs older, so I listened to whatever he listened to, and he eventually had all Moody Blues music. My favorite song is "Tuesday Afternoon". This was in the latter part of the British invasion, where they brought a European flair to clothing. In this era guys started connecting with their feelings, so it expressed in the music. I would like your reaction to "Paint It Black" by the rolling stones. I Enjoy your beauty.
I was in high school at the time and loved them from the beginning. Finally saw them 4 years ago only three members left touring. They were still amazing.
watch the whole "live at red rocks" concert...arguably the Moodys at their best
YES! I saw them in concert in the 90's. *Amazing!*
The Moody Blues is a progressive rock band. I first heard this song in the living room at our house around 1970. My sister turned all of us on to The Moody Blues. I've seen them three times in concert. Another great song they recorded is Tueday Afternoon on their Days Of Future Passed album. That was recorded in 1967.
Are you kidding me? "This is not music, it's an experience." I love how you just described the music of the Moody Blues. When I started listening to the M.B. in the early 80s, it was just that to me, an experience. Thanks so much for your reaction and may God bless you!
You asked where were we at this time, I was desperately searching to fill that emotional hole that was left when the Beatles broke up. We were lost. So many of us .
I was fortunate that I was born in 1955 and had the great fortune to listen to bands like the Moody Blues (from my home town Birmingham in the UK). From the Beatles and Stones, Deep purple, Bowie, Black Sabbath (another Brummie band), Led Zep, Pink Floyd et al. to todays rock bands like Blackstone Cherry and Alter Bridge. Loved 'em all
You like it because it is PROPER MUSIC
She asks where I was when I first heard this song, I was in my mother's house on a Sunday afternoon listening to "This is the Moody Blues" and this song played and I was drawn in. I was 12 years old, now 59 yo.
Too Sushi, the moody Blues have an extensive music catalog. They are brilliant.
I was in my 67 lemans in the parking lot with my girl when I heard this in 1970. What a great song. I have them 4 times!
Moody's helped to define Prog Rock, and had a sound that was way ahead of its time. In 2017 I was able to see them at the Hollywood Bowl with the Orchestra performing the album "Days of Future Past" with the song "Nights in white Satin". Have to remember when they wrote these songs they were in their early to mid 20's... (Like the Beatles, Stones and others) They will always be amazing ... and as you say Magical...
in 1970 the Moody Blues were wonderful and the Album is one of my favorites. The first time I heard it was when on played it on
my college's local radio station.
I’m 23 now, discovered them when I was 7 when I heard my mother playing them on the radio. That Christmas I ask for and got a handheld CD player and a moody blues CD. They really don’t make them like they used to anymore… every once in a while an incredible song is written today but back then they were pumping them out left and right
First time I heard this song and the Moody Blues i was a kid and my dad was playing it on his "reel to reel" recording device.
I was 18 and had just started my working life when this song was released. Loved it then, love it now and am glad a new generation of listeners is picking up on these old tunes. Go, girl.
It was 1972. I had just gotten out of the army after being drafted during the Vietnam era. I've heard some of their music on radio. A friend of mine suggested we go see them in concert. My first ever concert was the Moody Blues. What an experience! High as a kite, loving every moment. Love floating through the air. Magical.
Beautiful Sushi, this band were often referred to as " The finest little symphony orchestra in the world." by critics.
I wish you rainbows from Belfast.
I Saw these guys a few years ago, in concert. Graeme Rdge introduced a song "In the seventies, when my hair was brown and my teeth were white..."
First heard Moody Blues when I was stationed in West Berlin in 1972. A friend had just bought it and we all listened to it on our kick ass stereo setup. Me and a half dozen fellow servicemen all lived off base in a small apartment. Cramped? Yes, but more freedom than the barracks.
I got to see them live with my dad as a kid, and they were amazing live with a full orchestra.
First time I heard this ?
April 5th, 1970, a couple months before it was released. They played it at the concert I attended. I was blown away how well they sounded live. Over 50 years ago and still one of the best shows I have seen.
1972. At a friends house when I first heard this song. That started a journey listening to all their music fro the next few years and I finally got to see them live 40 years later and they still sounded so good.
Too sushi you made me appreciate this along with you. My heart was reflecting what you said in the wordsMAGICAL which describes so much of what was going on.
I was a teenager in the 70's what a great decade for music.
I was 16 in 1970, so much great music around then. I left an abusive home to hitchhike around the country and live on the beach or on coast highway in California be for I I joined the Navy. Concerts were so good then, the eagles, led zep,joe walsh with the James gang.
@Too Sushi....Listening to The Moody Blues was an experience. If you really want to go on a musical "experience," I am sure each one of their albums is on UA-cam in its entirety. I was only 8 or 9 years old when one of my cousins sat me down on the floor and we listened to their first album on her record player. It wasn't like listening to a Beatles album...it was more of a journey through a story they were telling.
Yes, the 1960's and 70's was a wonderful time to be a music lover....because you had so many types of music to listen to....from The Carpenters, The Who, The Guess Who, The Eagles, Boston, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, tons of Motown musicians that put out incredible music....it would take pages and pages to list all of the musical groups I listened to...and I loved all of them.
I got to see some of the most iconic musicians during that time...Elton John, The Rolling Stones, Chicago, ZZ Top, The Cars, the list is extremely long...because we had bands that came through town constantly...playing in local venues, in bars...( I was 6'6" and 275 lbs at 16 years old and never got carded! )...in college, they would show up in the Student Union Building and just start playing!
There is a live concert at Royal Albert Hall in about 2011 or 15 with full orchestra in dull view and full sound, you might check out. A lot of the biggest hits and a lot of the biggest fans.
A little insight on the song. If it sounds like 2 different songs that's because it started out that way. Singer/writer Justin Hayward had written 2 songs but couldn't finish them He realized that they were in the same key and put them together in one song. The rest is "Question".
Was growing up in SoCal at the time this was released. Bought the album when I was 15 years old. One of my fav bands.
Loved the Moody Blues.
I was 15 in 1960 and 25 in 1970.
I owned one of the first head shops on Yonge Street in Toronto 1969 selling all the gear except drugs.. Leather fringe vests, Afghan coats, etc. My 'car' was a 1954 Cadillac hearse painted Royal Blue.
We made 10 long fringe white leather vests for Sly and the Family Stone. In 1969 one of my suppliers came in and told me he had a spare ticket to a concert but I had to keep the store open and couldn't go.
I found out later.. WOODSTOCK... 😥
Anybody pay attention to the album covers? 2 that come to mind are "To Our Childrens Childrens Childrens", there is a "primitive" hand, with modern paint brush and oils on the front. On the back is a "modern" hand, grasping a chunk of charcoal, both painting the cover. Unfold the cover, the hands are left and right.
The other, "Long Distance Voyager"< has a wandering MInstrel, likely from a far off off nearby village, and in the top corner of the cover is a Voyager space craft observing the scene.
But all their covers were great.
Music like this helped fill the very large void left by the Beatles' 1970 breakup.
After the Beatles my all time favorite group is the Moody Blues!
Thanks for reminding me of this song again and enjoyed your reaction. As you mentioned this recording captured the feel of the live event just like you were there. This song came out in my freshman year of college. The 70s were a great time for music so many different bands, styles and sounds. The Moody Blues have so many great songs as mentioned below, however, one I didn't see was a later one called "I know you're out there somewhere" and also there first hit called "Go Now" from 1964.
Forty something years ago I was smoking weed in a friends basement. This song happened.
Lets see when this song came out I was living with my mom in Oakland cause I was 4 years old but probably heard it first somewhere in the 70's/80's. Also they're one of my all time favorite bands!
I got into the Moddy Blues when I was in college in the 70's. Yes, the 60's and 70's were a magical time for music. So much creativity. It was magical.
I don’t know where I was but I love the moody blues. In my early twenties I was obsessed with their lyrics so much. The 70’s were full of magic in my opinion. Also I think you would love to react to basically anything by the band Chicago. They are another of my all time favorites 🤍
One of the most Beautiful melodic pieces music Ever written ! Lucky enough to have seen them 4 times in concert. 3 times with a full orchestra. Justin had a beautiful voice, as he aged so did the voice yet it's still worth hearing !
I enjoy ur song evals ! I watch ur face an see ur being affected by the music, its endearing.
Quick aside, drummers name Graham Edge, wife is Sue. She left him cuz she was sick and tired of being called Sewage lol. Be safe
I was born in 1963. My eldest sister had “This is the Moody Blues” greatest hits double album. She went away to college in the late 1970’s and left behind her record collection. That’s when I discovered this song among the greatest hits.
I was 9 years old and this is, of course, during the Vietnam War!!!
They rerecorded it with the Royal London Symphony Orchestra, years later and put it on a new greatest hits package!!!
WORTH IT!!!
It's more intense!!!
I was 12 y.o and listened to the entire album Every Good Boy Deserves Favour over and over in the basement of the home I grew up in!
Respect!!! Love someone of your generation listening to music from my youth...music is our lives soundtrack
I was in high school in Chicago when this was released. This band had so many hauntingly beautiful songs. This brought back back some very fond memories for me.
Wow, been watching you for a few weeks now. This is actually one of my favorite songs. My father got me into the band. Saw in the documentary Justin was having trouble finishing this song and ended up combining 2 of his songs in to one. You can hear the difference when the song slows down
Love this song! I remember I was in 3rd grade in 1987 and listened to it on my Fisher Price record player after finding the album in a closet and intrigued by the album cover I had to know what was on that record and was hooked on them ever since!
I have no idea where I was when I first heard this song! I graduated HS in 1968 and by 70 I was in college and was probably at a party, I don't know! Love your reactions!
I'm a baby boomer. I graduated high school in 1970 and the Moody Blues were one of my favorite bands -still are. I saw them in concert six times, once driving 500 miles each way and once 250 each way. It was a magical time. Seemingly every week new groups would appear who sounded totally original. That music still sounds as fresh and original now as it did then, which is pretty remarkable. Most artforms and musical styles come and go but this music has lived on for 50 years and is still gaining new converts every day among the newer generations. One thing that was very different back then was that the music was mostly uplifting and expressed hope for the future. That seems to be sadly lacking these days. I feel blessed to have grown up in that time period.
In the late 60's and 70's you needed to listen to whole albums in a sitting. The order of songs mattered. In some cases two songs really became one.
I first heard this in high school (late 70s). Nights in White Satin was the ultimate house party song, when everyone was mellowing out. They were one of my favorite bands back then, and they still are. I hope you continue to expand your Moody Blues repertoire. They are an experience. You should probably check out the studio version on your own, with the full sound quality. Try The Voice or Wildest Dreams - two of their 80s songs.
My favorite group of all time. I was 12 in 1970 so I grew up with The Moody Blues. Story In Your Eyes and Your Wildest Dreams are two of my favorites. Justin Heyward is a fantastic singer/songwriter!
this song was released the same year my father passed. Still brings a tear to my eyes 30 years later. Please react to Rush the Garden Live you will love it. RIP Neil Peart!
1970 was actually 50 years ago.
Justin said in an Interview that He was inspired by the guitar play of Richie Havens and JoniMitchell before writing this song: a great Inspiration!!
This is one of my all time favorites of the Moodies. The music of the Moody Blues--especially that of the late sixties and early seventies--yeah, "an experience" pretty well sums it up. Some of my older sisters just loved this band. Of course, I followed suit. Wonderful.
Thanks Sushi, now I have a big-o hand print on the inside of my monitor and I don't know how I'm going to get it off ! The Moody Blues Rule ! Great job choosing the long version to watch.
I was 12 ty and was so into this song, then began starting to buy their albums and fell in love with the band!
Even though I was a kid when this came out I wasn't aware of I until much later when I got a chance to see them in concert. Justin Hayward's vocals just so emotional to me that like you said- it's more than a song, but an experience. Thanks for being able to perfectly express that feeling.
SUCH a great song from a bunch of virtuosos.
The first time i heard this was about 1997, was on a back road in oklahoma headed who knows where. Heard it on the radio, that haunting middle slow part gave me the feels. DJ never said who it was, so few yrs later, heard it again, this time DJ said artist and song. Bought the greatest hits album, it has a symphony accompanying them, even better IMHO
First time I heard the Moody Blues was at a party on campus (a late bloomer and my second go round at college). I think I had every one of their albums (vinyl in those days) by the time I graduated. The first time I heard them it was like an epiphany, the lyrics and those soaring harmonies were amazing to a guy who grew up listening to my parent's big band music from the 30's and 40's.
It's transcendental! Wife of 49 years & I saw them live twice with Symphony Orchestras. Incredible.
I was the 10th caller into WRAS in Atlanta late night, in 1976, for a song request and I was selected to win the entire Moody Blues collection....whenever I listened to the MB, stoned or straight...I'd put 2 speakers on the floor about 4'apart..and stack their albums and lay down between the speakers. Mellowed for days afterwards....good times
I bought the record when it first came out, so that must have been about two weeks after this concert! Keep faith with the Moodies, they made some amazing music. Try 'Your Wildest Dreams' followed by 'I Know You're Out There' (they go together as a story) both based on Justin Hayward's personal feelings of a true person (he won't name who it is though).
In 1970, I listened to this whilst on gaurd duty in the army 20yo, this is a fantastic group of Real musicians
It was indeed magical. ✌️🎸❤️
Take a spiritual trip with this group.
I was on some magical mushrooms listening to the Moody’s opening my mind to a better world.
Your comments are always very perceptive no matter the genre or era of the music. Enjoying your reactions.
they were my first concert back in 1971!
I'm looking for a miracle in my life.
Sushi you are gorgeous and I love your reviews!!
Thank you for this video! I am in my 70s and loved the music of the 50s and 60s but the Moody Blues are my all-time favorite band!!!!
The first concert my mom took us to ,was A two day event wish we went both days, the line up was The Loading Zone ,Creeedence Clearwater,Canned Heat Procol Harum,The Moody Blues,Deep Purple And The Chambers Brothers. As the top band Time was the number one song on am radio back then think it was july of 1968 I remember my mom smoked ciggs all the time and I had never seen A hippie or had any knowledge of drugs, she told me not pay any attention to the guys and girls sharing one cig.Any ways great show one of about thirty she took us all to.Including Altamont.
