Pixel 6 review: Google made the phone I always wanted

- There’s a lot of hype around the Pixel 6, which has new cameras, Google’s Tensor chip and more premium ambitions. After a week testing the new phone, I can’t think of a better phone to recommend right now that costs under $600.

I just tested the phones at the NYC Google store! I'm in love! The cameras and the magic erasor are amazing!
But besides that why should I get it over a iPhone 13 or the upcoming S22
@@mr.turtle9965 Um, the price? The software? The 5 years of updates? The refresh rate? The battery life? The in house developed tensor chip? The sound quality? Did I mention the price???

Correction: 3 years OS updates, 5 years security updates.
Most people won’t reach 5 years with a phone anyway but yes this is true
@@TTWGD3 Oh, their is 236 million iPhone users that have phones beyond 4 years old
He said 5 years of security updates and major major os update focus on that word dude major
@@wellszhou8286 iPhone 6 S has had over 6 years of no only security updates but iOS updates. The support it continues to get puts Google to shame. Before Google had the excuse that Qualcom only supported their SOC for 3 and 4 years but now that these have Google's Tensor, what's Google's excuse?
@@BOO-dq4vl A new version of Android is a major release. The guy in the video said 5 years of major OS updates which is just false. Way to misinform your audience CNET.
Preordered the Pixel 6 in sorta seafoam. Ordered the spigen phone case with clear backing to show off at least one of the color tones in the back.
Excited to be more engaged with photos as that was something I never really did in the past
Really enjoyed the review. Charming!
I have had my Pixel 6 for a week now and I really love it. I have been a Samsung Note guy for the past years, paying twice as much as I did for this phone for the past 5 Notes and this phone is MUCH BETTER. I am amazed by the Android 12 features with this phone and the device itself is peppy and solid. This may be my best technology decision in the past 2 years. Thank you Google for this great phone at a great price.
What was your last Note series phone? I still have the Note 10+ and I love it, it's a beast of a phone. I want to update for a newer smaller phone and something with a better camera... but I don't want to pay the amount for the new Samsung Galaxy s22(regular s22 not plus or ultra), and plus I hear the battery isn't very good. My first pick to replace my Note 10+ is the regular Google Pixel 6.
I have mixed feeling about the fingerprint scanner, I love how in phone such as the Pixel 3 or Pixel 4a it is in the back, feels so natural.
Ive had a few phones with the fingerprint scanner on the screen now. You get used to it. This was after having a few Nexus phones where it was on the back.
you won't if you try the fingerprint scanner on pixel 5. super unresponsive.
@@bestdy8778 not in my experience. Then again, I put multiple fingerprints in for the same finger, so it will read it better
@@bestdy8778 I don't have a problem on my pixel 5, nor did I with my Pixel 3. You may need to re-add it or clean the scanner.
@@CalebNestor tried so many different ways.. It still worked pretty bad when my finger was wet or even just moist ..finally gave up and sold it.
Ordered mine last week and was originally told I would not receive it until 11/27. Got an email today though that it has shipped and will receive it by Saturday!
I just bought the Pixel 6 2 days ago. It was an upgrade from my Pixel 3A XL. T-Mobile is currently offering a $300 trade in value for the 3A XL so the upgrade was a no brainer. So far I am very pleased with the upgrade.
The Pixel 6 is getting 3 years of Android OS updates and 5 years is security updates.
is this bad?
@@alukardFE No, it's the best out there, other than iPhones. No other Android phone offers this much.
@@alukardFE This OS update lifespan is standard for Pixels, and as good or better than any other Android phone. The security update lifespan is better than any other Android phone I know of, including previous Pixels. These are the minimum guaranteed numbers.
There are people who will say that it's not as good as the iPhone's numbers, which is fair. I still don't feel it's bad, but that's up to you to decide.
@@alukardFE not at all
@@KamasamaK Though I would say, it's 3 years of guaranteed updates for now, considering they have the power now things could change. IMO Google wants to play it safe and say 3 years for now but will re-evaluate when it's on A15.

Not really. And not a case person... What kind of dumbness is that... If I was super rich and could afford to toss phones as disposable, sure I'd go caseless. Normal people use cases because we don't have money to burn.
@@mementomori29231 im sorry you had to watch such a frustrating video
Already pre-ordered mine,Coming for the Pixel 3. Though I'll miss the small compact size, this 6 seems great. I'm surprised they had the base model cheaper than the Pixel 5 last year, makes me think Google really wants the 6's to do well in the market. The "free" Google Buds Pixel A-series already delivered to me, just waiting for the phone now lol
Yeah, I am going to be picking mine up from best buy. I'm coming from an iPhone 6. I'm so done with apple. I obviously don't have the phone yet but I did get the case for a phone and screen [rotector (I AM SUPER CLUMSY). With how big the case is I was startled. It's going to be a HUGE curve trying to get use to the size of the pixel phone. But I can't wait for it. Hopefully get to pick it up Thursday with those free pixel buds.
One thing I absolutely love about my 3 is the finger print scanner on the back! It's touch navability features are so underrated
Fell for all the hype? I guess marketing really does work!
they are making money back from the cloud storage - no more free unlimited g-photo storage like previous pixel models - soon you will need that with the super high-res large file-size photos ...
@@KingRockets salty you cant afford a new phone?
Had this phone for about a week now, and it is definitely their best device to date. Highly recommend to anyone!!
Thank you for this great review!! I pre-ordered the phone and I'm so excited to get it, it was really helpful to have a breakdown of some of the features like this
Are you still liking it?
@@jarrodkendall yes it's pretty great. Battery life could be better imo but I may just need to adjust some things
@@Jessica-C- thanks for the reply, I just ordered mine yesterday and am excited 😊
All well said BUT it's 3 years of OS updates and 5 years of security patches. Just so all are aware.
How many years do you realistically hold on to your phone ?
Ordered mine. Seriously bummed about the fingerprint scanner being gone on the back. I so love that. But, oh well
Yeah I got so used to it😔it will not be missed
Exactly how I feel. The 4x zoom camera's insane on this thing.
I'm glad they put it in the screen to be honest, makes more sense
Wish they had both. The one on the back is so convenient and fast
@@peace4myheart exactly. When I pick my phone up my pointer finger is right there and it just hits it perfectly. When I pick it up now I'm going to have to lay my thumb down and if it doesn't like my thumbprint then I'm going to have to switch hands or either use another hand to reach over and be trying to get another fingerprint to read which is annoying. I guess it's one of those minor complaints like the headphone jack all the flagship phones are doing away with the headphone jack and to me it's like I'm paying big money for a phone I should have these features even in that off chance that I want to use a set of headphones there should be a headphone jack on my phone I shouldn't have to get a dongle or be forced to use Bluetooth

I thought that the Magic Eraser was oversold a bit when Google announced it. It's a cool tool to have but has some issues that were expected.
The good thing is that the magic eraser is powered by AI, so there is a very good probability that we might get even better results on the long run. AI can be trained or heck even uploaded straight into your phone via google update, to make the phone experience even better what it was before. (we will se if this is just a another pipe dream)
*Your* issue isn’t mine or theirs.
@@nigrimarket there are apps which can do so easily and much better too
@@Dr.OneilAakashBiswas1038 yeah but those apps only worn when you have editing skills. The magic eraser is just a "one tap" feature.

Might finally upgrade from my S7. Lol was going to get the S21, but now leaning towards the pixel 6.
i got the s6, got you beat
Problem with Samsung is they're good in hardware but they have bad software support. S8 after release got only 1 android version upgrade and OneUI2 upgrade while low end phones bought in 2019 are still getting OneUI3. So they are reducing life of a well phone by capping out the software.
@@prateekpanwar646 my s8 plus got two major Android version updates, which was the standard for Samsung before they moved to three years of major OS updates with the S10+ which is still my current phone

I like the specs of the 6 Pro, but absolutely hated curved displays. So I’ll probably just go with standard 6
My fingerprint scanner works flawlessly every time. I see all these reviews saying it sucks. I have zero issues with it.
I'm going from a Pixel 1 to a Pixel 6. I am going to LOVE it !!!
Didn’t they announce only 5 years for security updates and only 3 for OS?
google's site lists those as the guaranteed/minimum years of support. It is possible, especially now that the tensor cpu is made in house, that google could extend OS updates longer if tensor ages well. basically plan for this level of support, but you could get more. i doubt they would ever extend it past the 5 years thou.
@CGGS_Gaming Not receiving new features past android 15 drags down the Pixels value proposition, they need to match Apple’s 7 years of software OS and security support if they want to be taken seriously as an alternative to the iPhone.
@CGGS_Gaming you are aware that it’s still misleading right?
@CGGS_Gaming time stamp:11:05 mentions the 5 years of updates for both OS and Security. When googles support page states at least until October 2024 for OS. My whole point was to illustrate that comment is simply misleading, that’s it.
@Apple Genius yes thank you for the reiteration
All the reviews dig at video quality of the Pixels, meanwhile, I've simply never shot a video on my phone (any phone) that wasn't a 15 second clip of a concert that I deleted the next day. Who are you people extensively shooting video on your phones?
I rarely take photos as video captures the moment better and also means you get context and do not miss anything. You can grab a frame from a video if you just want to see one moment. Cannot understand non-pro users preferring photos over video, strange!
@@andyH_England that's interesting, to me what you're describing is more of a process than I'm willing to go through. If I need a pic of something, I just take a pic of it. Maybe 2 pics?
People who worked on social media. I know, I'm 2 years late
Finally talked about the voice recognition. I use it a ton while I'm driving and it's one of the reasons why I stick with Google... That of course in the camera. Why would anyone pay extra?
Definitely thinking about Pixel 6 maybe the Pro, only thing holding me back is reported battery life.

Yes, I all ready pre-ordered
A Pixel 6 with the telephoto would be perfect for my use. Don't care at all about the other Pro features.
I watched many reviews today and you seem to be the only person to talk about the true tone.

Couldn't have broke my 4xl at a better time. I went 6 over 6 pro cause of price, like a flat screen, 90hz was enough 4 me, don't need telephoto, don't care about selfies, back looks better with the smaller top. I'll miss the face unlock I had with the 4xl even if it wasn't the best.
Not having face unlock is going to be hard for me to deal with also. Liked it on my pixel 4 and my iPhone 12.
In that case get the iPhone 13 mini as it has 3D Face-ID on a compact size with excellent hardware and comfort with superior 5G bands and decent battery life for 699
@@wellszhou8286 Damnit bro don’t tempt me. I am trying to get back to android as there are a few things about pixel phones that I genuinely miss. But device security like face unlock or the most up to date fingerprint scanning seems like a fairly important factor in a device that I am planning on living with for a few years.
I like the stock android experience could never go iOS
I am so Glad Google finally has a phone I want to buy. I love my Android phones but hate that you only get 1 version update. This is where IPhone (and it’s eco system) have Android beat. I like choice. I like that I can spend Far less for a phone like the MOTO G Series which are good phones. They held me over waiting for something like this Pixel 6.
All the pixel phones have had three year software updates this isn't new
@doni Qanon tweaker party pardon my ignorance, but what’s the use of security updates? I mean, how does it actually help?
@@Dr.OneilAakashBiswas1038 You do hear time to time about new malware out there affecting devices, regular updates are needed for that.
@doni Qanon tweaker party I would prefer stable and close to stock Android rather than go for bloated skin options with other brands. I just prefer Stock UI, though not saying we shouldn't criticise Moto for its update situation.
you need to register your fingerprint when it's normal, wet and dry because depending on which state your fingers are in, the phone might not recognize. dry fingers look different than normal or wet fingers. at least according to fingerprint scanners.
What is the difference between normal and dry?

After this review I'll definitely upgrade from my pixel 4a5g 👌
The Google Pixel 6 interpreter mode does not work. Offline is advertised. Does anyone have any recommendations as to how to make the interpreter mode work offline.
I want to know about it’s storage. Is the photo storage different from the phone storage? My iPhone combines my storage and I am about out and I’m sick of it. I’ve been wanting to switch from iPhone for so long. I asked someone in my family who can afford this sort of stuff for this phone and my birthday is the 22nd so I might get it then or on Christmas

Haven't decided yet on the 6 vs the 6 pro, but yes I definitely need one of these.
I went with Pixel 6 because the curved edge on my Samsung was a nightmare. Too many accidently touches.
@@raymedrano I can understand that. Not so much a fan of the curved edge myself. 6 seems like the overall better value for sure.
I think the pixel 6 is a great choice. I bought the pixel 6 let me explain the reasoning. Same chip, and good battery life performance. With a 30Hz difference that most people won't notice cause it runs so smooth. I bought it for $838. I got a case, a 30 watt charger, and 2 years of device protection. But with a trade in of the pixel 4a 5g. I get $250 credit back so I'm really getting everything for less than the phone itself under Google Fi. Even without the trade in the 599 price is a absolute steal not to mention free pixel buds. If you want the pro go for it if you have the cash but the normal 6 does just as well with photos and video. It just depends if you want to spend the cash on 120 hz and a telephoto and maybe display but I think the flat display of the pixel 6 looks great and has no light bleed in. Not to say there's accidental touches on the Pixel 6 Pro cause they're probably isn't, but it's not likely to happen on the normal pixel 6. The pixel 6 display is beautiful but either will be really good. I think you would have to really pixel peep to notice major differences unless your a tech enthusiast like many of us. 👍

@@Tanvir_x3 3 is what they have been offering in recent devices. There was talk of them extending it to 5 years of major OS changes, but I'm the end they didn't change from what they were currently doing.
How are you getting your screen on time now that it's been removed from the battery menu? Shows last 24 hours now instead of sot since last charge.
This phone is an interesting one, pixel phoned never cought my attention as I don't like pure android UI (Samsung, LG, honor are better interfaced in my opinion) but I think that now many settings are built-in in android 12 so might be ok. The best part of the pixel 6 pro it's its width of 75.9mm, 77 or 78 millimetres would have been better but this is not bad considering that the majority of phones now are ridiculously long and narrow, they're very hard to hold with one hand and manufactures are starting to make them even narrower which actually make it worst.
I'm just excited for tensor and how it develops over time
Yup, I hope each year it's a significant upgrade as compared to what 4 and 5 were.
6 looks like better buy than the pro, which costs 300 more
Agree unless someone wants the zoom lens that only the Pixel 6 Pro has.
Very good review. I especially appreciate the photos of people with darker skin tones, to see how well the Pixel handled this. That battery life is not truly stellar is a letdown, but obviously this is variable.
After 6 years of using Samsung only, I'm sure Pixel 6 or 6 Pro is my next phone, but seeing some reviews I kinda expected cameras, especially video to be better.
