Jon Boat: Alumacraft 1436lt (I would recommend the Tracker 1436 over this boat)
Mud Motor: Engine is a Predator 420cc 13hp that is stock with NO modifications. The mud motor kit is an SPS Swamp Runner Medium kit with a standard 85" shaft. 8.75" weedless prop that gets me going 18-19mph and 20mph+ if I'm running a 9" prop.

You need a grab bar. Nice rig.
Thank you! I like the idea of a grab bar, but I also like the open floor plan. It is something I need to look further into when I'm able to get back out on the water more frequently
JTgatoring I had a LT and it made a world of difference. Run along gunnel instead of across boat. It will make turning MUCH easier. If done as a base a big U in 2 pcs you can remove and leave the base.
@@tommccormick3890 I'll be looking into it. I think it would be a good addition. Thank you for tips
Cool fish camp ramp is 5 minutes from my house. My hubby wants a jon boat set up like that.
Awesome! I wish I lived that close. Love it out there. I really enjoy this setup. Perfect for a solo guy and the occasional passenger
Livin' the dream brother!
Nicely done : )
Man i just love your setup. I see that setup in my future. Keep up the great work!
I appreciate the support SluSharkND! Let me know when you end up setting your rig up
Nice rig thanks for sharing 🐟
@@tedsell1455 Thank you Ted!
Nice bro! Hoping to put mine in the water this evening
Thank you! Hows that big motor treating you??
@@JTgatoring tbh, I've been working so much I've not been able to use it
@@cdp50359 Aw man. Well I look forward to seeing a video of the new rig and how you set it up
I have tracker 15 so i think ur build is probably the most suitable for me, it looks to be very fast i dont think i want to go near 20 mph.
Most people will put the 22hp engine with a SPS Large kit when they run the 1542 tracker jon boat. A 13hp engine will work, but it just wont be as fast. You will also need the 100" shaft either way
Got a 12x36 with the same kit as jtgatoring I get 25 with hurricane prop
Hey bud. Really like the vids. I am looking to do a set up on a 10 or 12 foot boat. What size motor and set up would you recommend. As well what speeds can I expect?
Go with the recommended hp rating for the boat. Most people would go with a 6.5 hp predator engine and a small swamp runner kit. My first set up what a 1436 and a 6.5hp engine with a small swamp runner and I got 12mph without dialing it in for speed.
I put a 13hp twister xl in my 1332 jon and it is a little heavy on the back end
That prop makes that little boat scoot.
I m going to get me one for my 16 hp it does 20 mph now.
Yeah, I enjoy it. So far the best speed is 23mph with the stock engine. I'm rebuilding the transom now, and then we'll see how it handles some extra horsepower and what speeds are achieved
Nice jump cut. Something SCATERED !! I HEARD IT !!!!! : )
I just purchased the same kit as you just wondering what all the screws and shaft is for
You have an outer shaft and an inner shaft. The outshaft has the skeg welded on it and the inner shaft is what the prop is put on. The inner shaft connects to the PTO on the engine and the inner shaft needs to be supported. This is done with bushings. Depending on the shaft, these are either wood or plastic. Each screw holds a bushing in place. So all the random screws you see on the outside shaft hold in a bushing that supports the inner shaft.
Any comparison you would make against the twister? Or you haven't ran one of those yet
I have not run one yet, and I do not think I would compare it to a longtail. After the feedback I received from other views/subscribers, I would not recommend the twister longtail.
I have the twister. I like it, it worked great for me in the river. Had some tight turns to do and it made it effortless.
Do you ever go far enough that fuel economy comes into play? If so, about how many mpg do you get with that setup?
Normally I don't, but I can give you an estimate. I'll try to break it down into simple math; This engine will run at 3900 RPM's. On a full tank of fuel (1 gallon), it will normally last 1.5 hours. So running a 8.5" prop at 3900 RPM I get 18mph. So in one and a half hours I traveled 27 miles and used 1 gallon of fuel (18mph x 1.5 hours). Now, I can run my setup at 20mph lugging a 9" prop at 2600RPM's. This would allow me to increase my run time by one third (1/3) on the same amount of fuel [2600rpm / 3900rpm = 2/3 ]. So a normal 1.5 hour run time increase 1/3rd is 2 hours. So in 2 hours, at 20mph, I run 40 miles on 1 gallon of gas. So you can expect a minimum of 20 miles per gallon or on the upwards of 40 miles to the gallon. Hopefully that makes sense?
@@JTgatoring -- Sounds good. It would likely be on the lower end with a heavier load on the engine (my guess), but that's still very respectable. I'm a big fan of "underpowered" boats; you can still go plenty fast enough, but it doesn't cost a mortgage payment to go out on the boat for a weekend.
@@Makermook Yeah its a great way to get out there on the cheap. 40 miles is a long ways, even 20 miles... I normally put fuel in it once every two or three outings.
Hey JT Im watching ur vid now trying to find the v wake distance on ur 14 38 ? so I find my correct shaft length. I have 1438. OMC Scout. My Project. In this vid I definitely hear a steel to steel rattle on idle and just above off idle. Thats not your preadator. is that noise coming from the adapter drive to the shaft ? That is not a good sound !! Under load it goes away. Its in the driveline. Have you traced down that bad sound and found where it comes from ? Just wondering. If I had an Idle power noise like that I would return to the launch vehicle immediately !! You are braver than myself My Friend !! I didnt hear that problem noise in any of your test vids. So I am asking if you found the problem. Thanks for any info youcan help me with. HAPPY NEW YEAR SHORTLY MY FRIEND !! Take Care Be Safe Gods Bless !!!
Hey Ronnie, so with the "V" wake behind the boat, I am running an 85" shaft in this video and its about the perfect length for this 1436 and the load I'm carrying along with the 18 to 19 mph speed it gets. The tinging or metal on metal noise that you are hearing is probably the 10 loose aluminum props that are scattered in the bottom of the boat near the transom where the camera is mounted. I haven't had a metal on metal noise that worried me with the engine or the kit. You may get some play in the shaft if its not inserted into the coupler housing properly or just by coming loose. Happy New Year to you!!
Would you recommend a 1436 tracker or a 1436 alumacraft Jon boat for the medium sps kit? If you were to buy another boat would it be the tracker or alumacraft?
I would go with the Tracker. I like how the transom is built and supported. It is designed so that the owner can make modifications and changes easily. It's all put together with bolts and nuts so if the wood goes bad/rots you can easily replace it. Alumacraft rivets it together and you can access it at all without cutting metal. Tracker is also less money normally.
JTgatoring thank you sir!
JTgatoring how would you correct the motor not being able to mount to the transom correctly on the tracker?
@@jeffbenoit3218 Some boats have no issue, some boats do. The tolerances on the boats and/or the transom bracket differs, so some people have an issue and some don't. The people who do, end up notching the transom bracket to make it fit flat.
Jtgatoring I have a 1436 do I need the 100 inch shaft?
Depends on what you're doing. If you plan to constantly go faster than 20 mph, then yes; but if you have a normal load, the 85" will be fine. I have a light boat, travel light, and I weigh less than 150lbs. My motor ain't stressin' and I'm out running my wake at 20mph so stepping up the 100" may help with that but I still haven't tested it out yet. If you don't have to swing around the extra weight and length of the 85", then don't. That shaft is going to have more tail weight and feel heavier on the handle which comes into play when you're idling and moving around, but when you're on plane you won't feel any of that weight.
@@JTgatoring thanks for the reply!
Have you tried any of the speed props ? Also I have a KKK long tail and if I haven't bought a swamp runner they wont sell me the weedless or the speed props without the serial number so im gonna need a serial number to purchase them . Any ideas ?
Yes, I use swamp runner's speed props which they call their "hurricane" props. I have not run other "bullet" props though, just the hurricanes. I got good speed with the 8.5" hurricane. Faster than a standard 8.5 prop. As for getting access to them, I don't know. They have their reason
Where did you get your drive unit? Did you have to order it from Thailand?
@@jamesgraham2901 Ebay
@@jamesgraham2901 I see where KKK is making them in 7 inch I will try one of them but it kind of small for a 16 hp
@@stevewilliamson8526 where did you get the kkk unit?
have you had it in bigger waves?
I do not have big waves were I am. If there is, I'm not on the water
One thing that I have a problem with,,,and it’s just a guesstomation,,,the Thai kit or any other kit that is similar,,whether American or foreign,,,with no bracing,,, if you pry to get a bite like I have done with the old go devil ,,,and when I say pry,,I don’t mean just laying it down and see what it will grab,,,actually pulling up on grab handle forcingit into whatever,,making it bite,,without bracing on these models ,,I see breakage and bending and mayb even the back plate on motor cracking,,,correct me if I’m wrong,,like I say,,,I own a go devil,,,it’s got plenty of bracing and is actually braced to the plate the motor sits on,,,just a guess,,would welcome feedback,,I do like the low price though
When you're working a longtail, you can feel the limits of it. I've never heard of anyone stripping the coupler off the back of the engine block or cracking the block. I'm sure you could if you tried, but most people have enough common sense to know their limitations. Mud you don't have to have to worry about getting a bite. Normal swamp conditions you don't have to have to work about getting a bite. The only time I've met something where I had come to that limit is with a floating tussock, but I was still able to get through. If I have a really hard time, I'll turn the tail 180, rotate the shaft so the skeg is pointing up, spin it around and let it eat its way through the tussock. Other than that, if you're prying that hard on it, its strong enough to stand on and push the boat.
Didn't that motor come with electric start?
Yes, it does, but I never got a battery to hook up to it. I keep all my batteries up front under the deck and just haven't gotten a small lawnmower battery yet to keep in the back. I don't mind pull starting it. I'm sure I won't like it when I switch to the electric start though hahaha
What cc motor is that?
This is a 13hp predator engine. 420cc with no modifications
the parts and machining to build the backwater made in USA $250 if you have accsess to an old brigeport lathe and a new Grizzly upright mill. And know how to use them. I believe the 6.5 hp kit is $1000 dollars and 22hp is $1900 --Once you have your CNC programming to make the special parts Backwater is charging 6 times what their profit margin is to make 30% profit on their expenses building their kits !! Watching your videos has given me the bug. I will be building a setup soon! How is your performance with another person in the boat?
With the same size person, I keep the same speed. Normally maintain 18mph with two people. May drop down to 17mph but no noticeable drop in speed
On your video here at 5min 17 seconds a deaf man like me can hear that metal to metal BAD happening on youtube. Do you know the reason for not correct ???
I believe this is the aluminum props that I keep stacked in the back of the boat. At idle or coming off of plane the engine puts off a slower vibration. Once you start to raise the RPMs and get on plane the vibrations of the engine speed up and become less noticeable were the props aren't vibrating as much.
