    Good luck! I suspect it is a 2 stroke and that is why it was smoking so much. An older engine will smoke more than these newer ones will, but make sure your Fuel/Oil ratio is on point next fill up. Also if you start having engine problems, first step would be the carburetor. I am amazed you didn't have to take it out and clean or rebuild/replace it. If it doesn't cost much, replacing can often be the best way to go.
    Glad to see you got it going and did some good troubleshooting and probably long needed maintenance, instead of running the hell out of her with it sitting so long.

    Well done! Reminds me of my childhood. My buddy Adam and I found a 1950s era 2.5hp Evinrude in the bottom of a lake while snorkeling to find bass. We thought it would just be a wall hanger. His friend was able to get the thing running! We sold it for $50 back in 1992. In hindsight, that was too cheap, but for us it was found money and gas was under $1, so paid for lots of fishing trips with our 12’ aluminum with a 5.5 Evinrude.

    Hey Heiko.. I have no idea. Please stop calling me and asking me. But seriously, if you have a multi-meter, check and see if there is any DC voltage on those metal "butt" splices. If there is voltage, replace them with ones that aren't, ma dude.. And add in an "inline" reset-able fuse. Don't have the battery sitting on the metal skin of the boat, either.. use wood or 1/4" piece of rubber will work, too.. It's a shame about those Evinrude motors. I've known many owners not having a lick of trouble.. jus' sucks.. but look into a live well, perhaps.. canopy.. lights.. comfortable seating.. I MISS BEING ON THE WATER!!!... I'm near fresh water lakes, etc but NOTHING compares to saltwater.. deep sea fishing, scuba diving or even just getting some beach sand in my toes.. (I gotta make a trip with my family.. we're all saltwater bugs but had to move to Mid Texas due to Katrina.. thanks, bitch.. lol).. As always, take care, have fun, be safe.. CHEERS!!!!

    Great job thats a good engine boats lookin good I fix small outboards for a living! smart with the fuel filter %90 of the engines not starting is carb clogs oh and id gap the plugs from .30 to .40 tends to run better for me also if you use something like seafoam or and ethanol treatment on the regular you'll not have problems for years also dude I have so many big mangroves spots by there

  • @bryantblake1877
    @bryantblake1877 Рік тому

    Hieko, a reminder IF you are going to use ethanol gasoline for your premix, and the engine might sit forvan extended period, ALWAYS disconnect the fuel line at the carb and let the engine run the carb dry to shut down!
    I would have bet the hard initial start was a gummed up carb with the engine having sat so long. But those old small OMC engines were pretty much bullet proof, as you found out. That is a good little engine! Not fast, but should plane that boat wit just you as occupant. I had a mid 70's Evinrude 25, great uncomplicated and dependable engine!
    Now go do some REAL fishing! But you gotta get some "rabbit" gear and leave the "lion" gear at the house when fishing the backwatersa, (well, except maybe for channel bass and the ocassional small tarpon)😂

    When you changed the gear lube, there was one thing you didn't do. Just because the gear lube comes out the vent hole, that doesn't guarantee the gear chamber is full ? Some times air can get caught inside the chamber, and the lube isn't as full as it may appear ! You should have raised , and lowered the drive a few time, and checked it again ! It would be wise to at least check it after putting it in gear for a short while and make sure the level is up to par ! I've had a few gears come into the marina I worked at with blown gears because of people thinking their lower unit was correctly full ! I'm just trying to look out for you my friend ! All in all, you did a really good job !!!
