Is diesel best? 2023 Mazda CX-60 review: Diesel | Mazda aims for BMW X3, Mercedes GLC and Audi Q5!

    Diesel engines are awesome. I make a lot of km per year. On open road my CX 5 consmption is about 4,1l/100km. One Fuel tank is enough for 1100km.

    Amazing mazda, CX5 diesel owner, cant wait to upgrade to the CX60 3.3 e diesel rear wheel bias, only Mazda would do this in this time congratulation

    Thankfully Mazda has the only low compression diesel in the market. This was first introduced on the first CX-5 back in 2012. Beauty of the low compression (14:1 as opposed to 16:1 or 18:1) is higher rpm and makes it far less agricultural. I remember Wheels magazine back then doing a side by side with a Tiguan and it’s by parking the Mazda next to a VW that it was noticeable. But effectively for noise it puts it 1/3 of the way between a petrol and the traditional diesels other manufacturers make.
    The other benefit of Mazdas unique patented way of doing things is post VW diesel-gate governmental audits into published emissions in both Germany and Japan showed Mazda in good light. Germany failed to release results but it’s we’ll know that was because all of their brands cheated, but Japan did release results showing it was only the Mazda engines that produced emissions as they were on paper when on the road rather than dyno.
    Only catch with low compression diesel tech (and potentially why Mazda is the only company making them) is that cold starts suffer. To resolve this, the do exhaust recirculation on warm up leading to a very noise engine warm up where the diesel agricultural routes are revealed. But after warm up, it calms down whereas competitor details with their high compressions cannot.
    I’d argue that for the reason that Mazda’s diesels are the only low compression on the market and by that, lose the agricultural edge, that it’s certainly more refined than the German engines. Literally put a current CX-5 (once warmed up) next to a BMW twice the price and proof is in pudding (I’ve done this before to prove this very point ).

    I agree Japan is possibly one of the best places to live and ironically do not need a car in most places there. The public transport is sublime.

    For the plug in hybrid, the steep increase in price seems unjustified when comparing with Diesel. Take a lot of mileage to recoup the cost and does it have the range and towing ability.

    How does this compare to say a 3.0 bmw x3,x5 diesel or Audi q5 or q7 smoothness wise. Is the car as quiet or refined?

    MB haven't offered a GLC oiler in Aust since 2020 , when the last one was sold . Unusual that they no longer offer GLB/GLC diesels here, but you apparently can order one thru MB aust if you are desperate for it. Maybe the CX60 diesel might be a bit more successful here. The Mazdas oiler Is Euro 6 compliant

    Cargo as big as vw golf 1.5meters with seats down, back seat leg room just as much room as golf

      There are plently. Urban expressways are (shutoko, and I assume it's the Hiroshima expressway he's driving on), plus the various two-lane expressways in the countryside.

    What do you mean is not intended for Japan? is Japanese people can handle an LC300, they can handle this. After all, it was designed for the Asian and European market, that is why Mazda is making a CX-70 for the American market....

    Nice but Mazda will price themselves out of the market in my view. When they price their cars at the European class, I think people will gravitate to BMW, Audi and MB as they have the 'premium' name (whether they are or not these days).

      Who cares if they did. It has also been reviewed by a respected German car reviewer in Europe and he also had a lot of complements for the vehicle. He drove it through the mountains and noted that it didn't quite handle as well as the German cars, but the engine sounded spectacular and it was engaging to drive. I'm glad Mazda went in this direction. At least the car will be more affordable and reliable than the Germans. Cheaper to maintain too.

      @@trojanhman8136 triggered? Use your brain to evaluate what the reviewer has to say, then go check the car out yourself and make up your own mind. Every car brand pays for journalists to attend the launch of a new vehicle. But it's up to you to evaluate the vehicle yourself when you see it. The question you should be asking is, did they pay the journalist to give the product a favorable review in exchange for advertising or something like that, not did Mazda pay for you to go to Japan to see the car. There's a difference. Get it?

    I'm not hating Mazda at all but why Mazda kept selling diesel variants of CX-60 and CX-90 in Australia when previous 2.2D engine is notoriously unreliable? Can someone actually explain it to me? The coolant will spray above the engine after blown head gasket. This is caused by super low compression ratio. Not sure if they will fix the issues with the new 3.3D engine though.

      The Japanese market is still very diesel focused since we drive on the same side, there is minimum development cost for Mazda to import it to Oz. Besides the Germans still have diesel engines so if Mazda wants to compete with those guys, it makes sense to fulfil that demand. Also the 2.2D is still one of the more reliable diesel engines on the market today. Diesel engines in general have more problems than petrol ones, I don't think it is a uniquely Mazda issue, don't choose it if you don't like it since Mazda always offers a petrol option in all their cars, BT-50 aside, which isn't really a Mazda.

    Making comments about car is too big for Japan and they only drive hello kitty cars is like someone saying Australians only eat bags of chips and lick their plates in restaurants (both statements are true btw) Land Cruiser prados , harriers and hi Lux trucks are very prevalent in Japan. And fyi, most Japanese homes do not have a garage.

    $65k get you only entry level cx60 with fabric seats ,no vision technology, no lane centring assit and no panaramic roof is the reson i choose nissan pathfinder over overpriced cx60.

    If Mazda shifts upmarket by abandoning more affordable models their time as a mainstream brand in Australia is probably finished. I don't think they will sell very of these SUVs... I wish them luck.

    Unfortunately this car is a pile of junk, the car is noisy, crashy ride, poorly built with little insulation. The windows steam up if parked for an hour. The technology in the car doesn't work, driver recognition is a joke. The noise from the boot with rattles etc are unbearable, the lane assist is so aggressive it's dangerous and cannot be permanently disabled. The doors feel like paper when opening/closing. I bought a CX5 and a CX60 a month ago and I hate the CX60, the CX5 is great, wish I had just bought two of them.

      That is the usual arrangement. Flights and accommodation and maybe meals. Japan is an expensive country and these new Mazda models are expensive and important for the future of Mazda. They will do everything they can to ensure a successful launch.

    Oh my dear. Why would someone want a diesel? Clueless. I like this car. I have been asking for larger more powerful engines for a long time. Now we hear it is more fuel efficient than a smaller engine. I am not even a car person and I under more than car people. Well that is not true. The true is I can think and speak independently. This is the car that I wanted but it is $20 000 too expensive.

      ​@M his review was pretty complimentary, especially coming from a German. That inline six sounds incredible as it revs out, and a really smooth power delivery. It won't handle quite as good as the Germans or Italians, but it's not far off, and a lot cheaper and probably more reliable and easier to maintain. Very impressive for Mazda to go in this direction.
