Chordimist was created by South Korean-based developer Leestrument. (aka Loptimist)
I was blown away by this M4L device - this is the only chord assistant plugin capable of handling extended jazz chords properly. So, complex Neo-Soul-like chord progressions are flying off this thing! Even the Scaler 2.5 fails miserably in this regard.
Chordimist is a chord generator, an advanced arpeggiator, and much more!
All the terminology I’m using in this video may not be the same as Leestrument intended.
But, as there’s no official manual for this M4L device I decided to do it anyway.

For MIDI export, you could just record the input from the chordimist track into another empty midi track and get the midi data
Yes, Is what I'm doing in the video recording random chord progressions on the midi channel.But...I have a lot of midi chord progressions I made over the years and I wanted to import some of those into the CHORDimist to rearrange or make some variations using internal engine, but this is not possible.

You're welcome! Ableton is a great DAW, I was an avid Cubase user, but Ableton make everything fly faster, especially when facing deadlines. And some of the M4L devices can really enhance productivity and general workflow!

Thank you. You've earned a sub, but that seems like an inadequate 'reward' when you've basically created a video manual for Chordimist. I was going to buy the plugin a while ago but saw that some people were complaining about the lack of a manual. Which put me off as I doubted that if the developer couldn't be bothered to create something so intrinsic as a manual, then they probably wouldn't keep on top of bug fixes and updating the plugin. I also didn't have the time to just sit and try and determine how it operates without referencing a manual. But now that you've made this video, I probably will buy it. The developer should definitely show his appreciation for the work you've done to improve his plugin and possibly create more sales. Thanks once again.

@@Thegamer97100 unzip downloaded file and drag and drop into the Ableton Live browser. If you have the CHORDimist clicking on the file in browser will open the CHORDimist with my presets! Hope this helps!
so I managed to install the preset. But when I click on it inside of ableton, It doesn't show up. I'm a windows user btw. Does it really work?
@@Thegamer97100 oh, it is difficult to say what’s wrong there try to open Chordimist first and then click on my preset It must open one more chordimist. Oh perhaps, M4L or Ableton must be updated updated to the latest version

@@Thegamer97100 I created it in 11.0, then I updated AL to 11.1 and it worked as expected. I also tried to open the file on another computer (mac) with AL 11.0 and it worked as well, but I had to open and close the Chordimist a couple of times to get the file to open.

🎉Its absolutely strange that something like this powerhouse it's not at the forefront of max for life plugins. This is the first time ive heard or seen this product and its amazing. I have scaler and Chordjam and this beast is far superior. I wonder if they have heard you and made any improvements since then. Please, please do another video showing how to construct a chord arrangement especially the borrowed chords out of the scale like jazz pianist do. Amazing video and thanks for bringing this to us. He also plans to release Chordimist 2, but there's no known release date yet. Developing an M4L device of such complexity requires significant effort, so let's keep our fingers crossed. Very good overview of a complex tool. I only wish it had a 'listening' feature (so that we can enter and store chords from a Midi keyboard for example).

@@MusicianParadise It is over 4 years old, and it is still on v.1.0, so it is implausible that we will see an update. The developer probably just has this device as a passive income.
@@andrew_nayes Actually, the developer recently launched a new M4L device called DRUMist and is currently working on ARPtimist. I frequently visit his Discord channel, and from what I see there, he is still working on Chordimist 2. However, it is a huge undertaking as people are giving a lot of suggestions, and implementing all those things in one concise interface is a challenging job, especially when facing certain inherent limitations of MAX for Live. But I still hope there's a chance to see Chordie 2. The Arptimist and the Drumist were originally intended to be part of the new Chordimist (as far as I can tell), but the developer decided to split them into separate products to simplify the overall concept.

Well, the Chordimist is designed with a specific focus on Jazz and Neo-Soul harmonies. While it is possible to program diatonic chords on the Chordimist that belong to the diatonic scale, you may find its chord pool almost uselessl. This is because even diatonic extended chords often contain notes (chord extensions) outside of the scale, which is common in Jazz and other Jazz-related music styles. If you prefer a more classical approach, there are other plugins available, such as Scaler 2, which offer greater flexibility in this regard (though you may encounter difficulties with Jazz chord extensions when using Scaler).

If it sounds cool it is cool. ;-) Love these chords and beautiful extensions, but have often a very hard time to come up with basslines and melodies and stuck in a loop... that's why i asked. I have scaler as well but as you said for those really cool chords its not always the best. The jazz presets are very nice, but the better one sounding exactly like Alfa Mist. Especially the 11th chords (think the 1st preset).

When it comes to melodies and baselines, if you follow the classical approach (i.e., all the chords belong to the same key and there are no notes outside the key for the chords or melodies), your music will sound like… classical music in the best scenario or like some nursery rhymes in the worst case.
For complex and "cool" jazzy chords, a simple trick is to use only the notes from each chord for the melody on the top of the chord and only the notes from the same chord for the bassline However, like any trick, it may not always work, so having some knowledge of jazz music theory is invaluable if you are truly interested in creating these cool-sounding chords progressions.

Great video dude. I’m not sure if I missed it but how do you disable the strum globally?
The problem with the strum is the init preset. By default every black square wil trigger strummed chord , and if you change the chord, strum (Stack) and all the arp settings is still there. My workaround is to program the first black square with no strum (i.e. no Stack, no rate on the arp) and copy this square to all other black squares using the "copy" button. It is very quick. And then I'll save the Chordimist as a preset in Ableton for the future use. BTW to disable the Stacked notes (if accidentally clicked on the "Stack " title press the chord you are using in the chord pool. it will disable the Stack feature. Hope this helps!

II'm not completely understanding the issue you're experiencing. My personal workflow is to transform the chord progression into MIDI as soon as possible and deal with MIDI instead of Chordimist. M4L devices can be quite temperamental. So, for peace of mind, as soon as I'm happy with the results, I record it on a separate MIDI track.

Yes! You can route MIDI from chordimist channel to MIDI track in Ableton!

Hi! I'm not selling or distributing the Chordimist, so this is not question I can possibly answer. I bought it just like you did and made a video about it.
If you purchased the Chordimist from the gumroad, as I did, you most likely will find the download files there - you can always download files you purchased on gumroad years after the initial purchase.
Also, it seems strange that you calling the Chordimist a VST, because it is not! It's a Max for Live device which will work ONLY with Ableton Live DAW. There's no way to use the Chordimist as a stand alone or VST. Maybe this is the reason why you got impression you didn't have the files? Let me know if you figured out what's going on with your purchase!
Can you use Ripchord as a midi input into chordimist
I just tried to do just that! Unfortunately, the answer is NO - the Chordimist receiving the. MIDI from Ripchord, but not capable to record the chords Ripchord is sending, only the trigger note. It would be amazing to use Ripchord as a midi input into chordimist but no luck here - please let me know if you'll find the way to do it!
While I love scaler 2 and it has all the chords known this seems faster and easier to get what u want
Edit I don't own ableton live
The main thing about CHORDimist it's how this device dealing with complex extended jazz chords. Scaler 2 not suited very well for those. And I love randomization options of the CHORDimist. It is a shame it M4L device -Ableton only 🙁.
@@MusicianParadise yes I find myself using what I learned from jazz in both vsts scaler and captain chords chordimist seems way better compared to those scaler 2 is advanced and has everything u need but u still have to know how to get there

@@jamesjr2550 yes, Chordimist is good for big extended chords. To build such chords in Scaler you have to know at least something about jazz theory!

No! It's all up to you: Scaler 2 does that .Chordimist is great as it helps create chord progressions that are not strictly tonal.

ohhh I received a few comments like this. Probably it is some system depended staff (PC vs MAC) or Ableton Live / M4L updates compatibility. I'll try to make a video, but in my case it just works, I would like to understand the reason why in some cases drag and drop is not working, to be able to help!, I'll try to dig deeper into this! I have a problem with the release of the last note lasting too long. It ruins the whole plugin. minimising the "RATE" fixes it but also completely removes the STRUM effect. Any tips?
Hmm...I was trying to replicate the same results with my Chordimist with no success. Every next chord I'm triggering completely mute/cuts all the notes of the previous one. I tried few Ableton instrument racks and Artruria Pigments - no notes lasting too long. Did you tried to change the instrument/plugin you are using with the Chordimidt? May be changing the buffer size can help? May be sustain pedal CC is coming in somehow? Please let me know if you'll find the reason why the last note lasting too long!
@@MusicianParadise My setup was just a default operator and the default chordmist preset. For me the last note rings on in an annoying way (almost 3 seconds) The full strum could play 2 times before it stops ringing.

Can you lock to a scale? So only chords in key will be available?
The answer is kind of yes, although to do that, you must have a basic understanding of how chords and scales are related. But...the whole point of the M4L Chordimist is this - Chordimist works really well in situations, then complex harmony is required - i.e, chord progressions with at least some of the chords outside of any given key. Also, Chordimist works exceptionally well with all sorts of extended chords, including those with 9th, b9th, #9th, 11th, #11th, 13th, and b13th. The problem with those upper chord extensions is that, in any given key, you will need to use some chord extensions that are outside of the key. For example, in the key of C major, a Cmaj7 chord will never work well with chord extension 11 (note F of the C major scale) in a Jazz or Neo-Soul context. So, the "correct" chord is Cmaj7#11, and the #11 = F# and F# does not belong to the C major scale. So, the Chordimist will always (almost) give you stylistically correct chord extension combinations regardless of the key. However, if you want more straightforward, not extended diatonic chord progressions, you will be much better off with tools such as Scaler 2, Ripchord VST (BTW, free plugin), or Chordjam. Sorry for such a long answer, but scales/chords/chord progression relationships are quite a complex subject.

You must have some basic knowledge of music theory to do that. For example, if I want chords from the C major scale, I'll choose the roots from the chromatic row of the notes on top of the Chordimist interface and assign the following chord qualities to those roots: Cmaj7, Dm7, Em7, Fmaj7, G7, Am7, Bhalfdim7. I would assign those seven chords to the seven square cells on the left side of the Chordimist interface to have a harmonized C major scale always ready to go. To get consistent results, knowledge of chord symbols can be very helpful. As you progress from the top of the chord symbols table to the bottom, chords are gaining more notes (up to 7) and becoming increasingly complex. So, the simple strategy is to stay in one or two adjacent horizontal rows just to avoid a mixture of chords with inconsistent note numbers (for example, if chord N1 contains 3 notes and the next one 7-those combinations rarely sound good). From left to right on the chords table, you have four columns with five different chord qualities (I know, it's confusing!). -Yes, 5!!!! Hence, the "diminished" category contains two kinds of chord qualities-the first seven chords in c 4 are actually half-diminished, and the last five are diminished seventh chords. Soooo it's easy to mess it all up.
please can somebody tell me how to load presets on CHORDimist Presets?
If you asking about downloaded files ,you have to drop the file into the Ableton Live Browser, then double click on it. If the Chordimist is installed . If your question about Presets menu it all about the arp settings , so there's no chord progressions under the Presets menu. Hope this helps!
For some reason my CHORDimist is only playing a chord that is stuck in exactly 1 tone. Does anyone know how to fix this? Isn't this device supposed to play a variety of chords in a scale? Does anyone know how to fix this?
You have to manually assign the chord in the chord pool for each of the squares. One of the coolest features of CHORDimist is this - CHORDimist does not follow "chords from one scale" concept. And it makes CHORDimist really shine in styles like jazz and neo soul , in those styles chords are frequently borrowed from a vast variety of scales and modes in any given chord progression. Try to watch trough my tutorial, probably the CHORDimist will start to make more sense after all.
@@MusicianParadise Thank you for the presets you shared. I got an error message trying to open them at first but I managed to bypass the error message. I didn't see anywhere in your video that helped resolve the issues I'm having but I'm doing tons of experimenting and I'm accidentally making some progress. I'm currently trying to figure out how to quickly or automatically fill ALL squares in with color. Do you know how to do this?

Well, the Chordimist is a rare tool that allows you to explore chord progressions beyond a specific tonality while still maintaining musical validity. While there are many tools designed to provide chord suggestions based on a single key, the Chordimist is particularly useful for genres closely related to Jazz, such as Neo-Soul, Soul R&B, Nu Disco, K Pop, Acid Jazz and so on. In addition to helping you build complex chord progressions, Chordimist handles chord extensions (upper structures) exceptionally well, and those 9th, 11th, and 13th tend to "escape" from any given key anyway in the aforementioned genres.
If your musical preferences lean towards classical, simple pop, folk, or cinematic styles, Chordimist may not be as useful. While you can create custom chord pulls in any genre using Chordimist, it usually means that you already have a sufficient understanding of music theory to be able to work without such tools. Personally, I think that Scaler 2 offers a more concise toolset for creating strictly tonal chord progressions.

please tell me you have new presets for this. i have owned this for years and i never use it...but i think about it daily....i still dont understand how to use it because i know zero music theory after all these years
I'm eagerly awaiting the release of Chordimist 2. With some Live 12 updates, I hope MIDI export will be possible, allowing me to create more presets. Additionally, there have been numerous complaints about the preset installation process, which has led to me providing full-time customer support for a free product :( I believe you should explore Chordimist because you don't actually need to know about music theory to use it. Chordimist handles all the music theory aspects if you're willing to adjust settings, use randomize options, and so on.When you've come up with something that sounds good to you, just hit record! Don't let it sit unused on your hard drive ;)
I think the thing is .....and i feel the same with your ripchord packs.... is that i wish i could make it where half my keyboard (push 2) is chords and the other half are corresponding notes to those chords. do u happen to know of a rack or device that can do this?. you are a great help to the community...ever new studio i go to i tell them about your packs@@MusicianParadise
@@beatpax Thank you for spreading the word about my work! I think that the Chord-Scale relationship you are talking about can be achieved using the Scaler 2 plugin. I’m yet to fully wrap my head around Scaler 2 workflow as it seems pretty complex plugin.
@@MusicianParadise i totally get why u like ripchord...i hate scaler...actually i was using scaler and got so frustrated i looked for this video again. Lol
@@beatpax I can feel the pain, lol! You have to invest a significant amount of time in learning how to use Scaler 2. Instead, you could have spent that time learning actual music theory, eliminating the need for a Scaler 🤣
Couldn't we just implement all of the chords in Chord Mist library using Ripchord? Does it add much intelligence beyond that?
The power of Chordimist lies in its accurate handling of chord extensions for each chord quality, its highly flexible randomizing options, and its very musical arpeggiator. While Ripchord can replicate some of Chordimist functionality, you need to have sufficient music theory knowledge to program chords with good sounding voicings and appropriate chord extensions. Additionally, you will need to manually transpose the chords using keyswitches on the left side of the keyboard, which may introduce some bias to your choices instead of generating random strings of chords. Although Ripchord has an excellent and very musical strum feature, it is not as flexible as the Chordimist's highly advanced arpeggiator. Not to mention the amazing LFO page of Chordimist! Having said all of this, I must admit that I use Ripchord more frequently than Chordimist in general. As a music theory nerd, I am able to program highly intricate sequences of complex extended chords, which would be quite challenging to play on a keyboard. However, when I need some unconventional inspiration that is not influenced by my personal music taste or the music theory cliches I am familiar with, I often turn to the Chordimist.
But how can you make sure they resolve
You should experiment with various combinations until you find a resolution or a pleasing loop. Alternatively, studying music theory for 3-4 years will give you some degree of understanding of what you're doing.

@@MusicianParadise you can modify the plugin and add MIDI mapping I found just like a click thru example 1-5 more worked best needs a little more tweaking but yea

Yes, definitely! I have created many chord presets for the free VST Ripchord, which can be used in virtually any DAW. With some arpeggiator and MIDI CC editing, you can achieve results very similar to those of the Chordimist.

Scaler 2 is a completely different tool! The Chordimist has some inherent issues, such as its compatibility only with Ableton Live and the inability to import MIDI (due to a limitation in Max 8). To make the most of this M4L device, you need to have some music theory knowledge. The interface does not clearly display the relationship between scales, modes, and chords. However, the Chordimist excels in handling extended seventh chords, unlike Scaler 2, where you need music theory knowledge to address issues like b9 on minor seventh chords and so on. Additionally, the Chordimist offers an amazing, very musical arpeggiator, as well as a fantastic Pitch LFO page.

Basically, Max For Live is an object-oriented programming environment for musicians where you can build your own plugins - those will work in Ableton Live DAW only.
With all the tools like this on the market, how can the developer charge $60 for his device out of nowhere? I will never give such an award to a developer who has not yet proven himself in terms of continuity, product support/update, and who does not provide the minimum effort to help his customers to use his device, namely: a user manual and/or its own video tutorial.
Well, it's all true! Here are a few points I'm considering - the Chordimist has quite a unique set of features that are rarely found in well-established commercial products (namely correct upper structures on complex extended chords, very sophisticated and musical arp, pitch band LFO, very musical randomization function). It seems like Chordimist is a labor of love, not some product/busyness model for its creator. You can't make much money selling M4L devices, after all. I bought the Chordimidst and made a video about it mainly to promote some of the innovative ideas implemented in this M4L device. Hopefully, the "big guns" will take notice and will continue to improve their products (Scaler 2.5 Xfer Cthulhu, Capitan Chords, and the like)
@@MusicianParadise I use to support a lot of little developers with good ideas buying their devices, and when I say a lot it's a lot : ) But this one is too heavily priced compared to the famous big guns you named.
@@tobytodelafontena Completely agree! My thing is not to promote the Chordimist and the like, but give exposure to some good ideas worth sharing. I have to admit, I'm obsessed over chord assistant plugins, lol. My favourite, by far, is the Ripchord from Trackbout (free vst BTW) - I made a lot of free presets for it to share with the community.
