  • FREE Guide - Learn how to finish at least one great-sounding song per month: pickyourself.com/framework
    In this video, you'll discover how to add movement to any sound by using Ableton Live's envelope follower device. My name is Philip from Pick Yourself, and I've created this channel to help electronic music producers like you make meaningful progress with their music.
    The envelope follower is Ableton Live's most underrated device, at least in my opinion. It can add groove to any sound you want. It does this by analyzing the envelope of one sound and using it as a modulation source for other parameters (like the gain of another sound).
    In this tutorial, I'll show you step-by-step how to use the envelope follower in Ableton Live to create dynamic and rhythmic effects in your tracks. Whether you produce Techno, House, or EDM, this versatile device will take your sound to the next level.
    With the envelope follower, you'll be able to breathe new life into your sounds, adding movement and excitement that will captivate your listeners. It's a powerful tool that often goes overlooked, but once you understand its potential, you'll wonder how you ever produced without it.

    Great tutorial (again 😂) ! Just subscribed to your channel and I feel in my guts it's going to grow like crazy - your vids are extremely smart, informative and well-produced (while avoiding the trap of being overproduced) - anyways I'm an instant fan. Thank you for spending time and effort to share your knowledge with us! Greetings from Poland 🙏❤️😘

    Playing around w using envelope modulation on other effects like a filter or reverb can create really nice effects as well, you can also get into crazier sounds by using this on certain fx parameters like delay time or pitch shifting

    This is a very thorough video, and I appreciate the efforts of anyone who goes this deep in an attempt to teach others the skills that they have developed. I have one additional suggestion; perhaps you can go into more detail about the concept of an envelope. Defining what an envelope follower is by using the word "envelope" is a little bit circular. Many people are completely unfamiliar with this term and what it refers to in a concrete sense. A picture or two of ADSR curves and how the levels correspond to what's happening with the pad might be helpful.
    Really good video in any event. Thanks for doing it.

    The problem with digital envelope following is, that there's always going to be a processing delay, you probably won't be able to get good transients with it - be sure to offset the delay of the channel a few ms...

    • @pickyourselfofficial
      @pickyourselfofficial  8 місяців тому +1

    • @pickyourselfofficial
      @pickyourselfofficial  8 місяців тому +1

      Thinking about that again… wouldn’t this be possible simply with a compressor that’s sidechained to that signal? It would read the envelope and reduce gain accordingly.

    • @robin_miller_music
      @robin_miller_music 8 місяців тому

      @pickyourselfofficial yes, absolutely. Maybe the other method might give a subtle difference though, or give access to doing something else as part of the chain? Dunno, kinda thinking out loud!

    I was expecting to see you set the envelope follower gain to negative - this would have been more like sidechain/ducking, right?

    • @pickyourselfofficial
      @pickyourselfofficial  8 місяців тому

      I view the gain on the envelope follower simply as “how strong do I want the modulation signal to be” and then map this to whatever parameter I find useful. Gain is the easiest and most obvious one but there’s much more you can do with it.
      The use case you’re describing would indeed be more suitable for a normal compressor with sidechain enabled.

    i got a quick question. When i do gain staging, for some rason i still get my piano distorted, tried putting the DB on Vumt Delux, below -9 DB before every plugin.. Am i supposed to use the gain staging tool to lower the gain, or like a utility like in ableton?
    why is it distorting still?
    thanks so much

    • @pickyourselfofficial
      @pickyourselfofficial  8 місяців тому +2

      Okay it's pretty hard to diagnose this from the description. My recommendation is to create a blank session, load up the piano, and add one plugin after another (like you did in your original session) with the same settings until you figure out which one causes the distortion. You then have to go into the settings of the plugin and dial back whatever parameter is causing it to distort. The OTHER possibility is that all of your channels mixed together cause some plugins on your master channel to distort (or the output of the master channel goes above 0dBFs. Third possibility: If you're in FL Studio, there's this strange limiter automatically engaged on the master channel. So a lot of producers don't notice that this limiter is working way too hard (=distorting like crazy).

      The piano is my main instrument when recording. Most of the time I get piano distortion even with balancing is down to gain bumps in reverbs and overcrunched comp.
      Brilliant advice above. It may take time and even feel. laborious but sometimes we have to get our hands dirty and be forensic.
