Thanks for educating me on my Mother of millions plant, she's beautiful, but I haven't seen any blooms yet. It has really proven itself, very prolific.
You should see how tall, long and curvy my mother of millions got. They're turning pinkish purple. They're more than 4 feet long. I have them hanging on my apricot tree and it's growing like crazy. Watching it bloom and seeing the flowers grow is beautiful. They are growing these beautiful pink flowers at the very top and little flowers on each little tip of the leaves. Can't wait till it blossoms.
I joined your succulent of the month club. I do have quite a few small succulent plants and sedum. Hoping to learn more about keeping them all healthy and happy.

Kalanchoe blossfeldiana are my favorites, those blooms last for weeks on end. But they do love brightness. I think they grow best with regular pruning to them nice and compact. The more energy that can be put into growing the lower leaves the "beefier" the succulent. I have seen so many that look vine-like and quite unappealing, but to each their own.

This very helpful. I have a quick question. My mother of million has gotten very tall. Can I trim it and replant it without worrying that the bottom plant will die?
You'll want to cut off the top, compact section, let the cut dry for a couple days, then replant that part to re-root. The remaining, bottom portion should also survive on its own, but they can look a little funky. More sunlight can also be helpful to make a Kalanchoe grow compactly, instead of stretching for light, if that is what's happening. But healthy, mature Kalanchoe can be naturally tall too :)
Amazing video!!! I got so much out of it as a first time Kalanchoe parent, I got it in a tiny baby nursery pot. And I am wondering when I should repot it? I have the same tiny clay pot that should you were showing for the drainage hold, I am wondering if I should repot it or wait for a 'sign'? But what is the 'sign'?
You could, but you would have to water somewhat frequently. To enjoy the low maintenance aspect of Kalanchoe, we recommend mixing about 50% Bonsai Jack Gritty Mix with 50% standard succulent soil.
Isopropyl alcohol is usually sold at 70% concentration and I'll use it as is for thick skinned succulents (Haworthia, Gasteria) or very bad infestations. Otherwise, you can dilute it with an equal volume of water to apply a 35% solution. Annie
Moving it to slightly more sun and re-potting with fresh soil can encourage blooming! Also safe to use a light fertilizer each month in the spring and summer.
It's likely an issue with water or sun (too much or too little of either or both), but it's hard to give a specific diagnosis without seeing the plant or knowing your growing conditions.
I've discovered that the "difficult" succulent is the one that is ill-suited to your environment. I say, buy them all then see how they do. The ones that survive are the ones that are easy to grow. For me, it's the Kalenchoe Tomentosa Teddy Bear, soooooooooo cuuuute!
Such a good point! Picking the right type for the conditions is crucial. And different people have different styles of plant care. So glad that cute Teddy Bear is an easy one for you!
I just was given a leaf of a Mother of Thousands plant. The directions are in Japanese. I think the gist of it was to tape the leaf (I taped it to my tile backsplash in my kitchen), with a paper towel behind it and I have been spraying it every day. Babies are forming but the middle of the leaf is turning brown and yellow. I am not sure what to do next - do I plant the leaf with the babies still attached sticking out of the soil, or pull the babies off? Thanks for your terrific video. I hope I get a response before the middle completely dies. Thanks!!!
Interesting, we've never heard of this propagation method before! But yes, you can move the leaves and babies and lay them on a pot of soil near a sunny window. Keep the soil a bit damp until the new plants establish roots. The old leaf will die and you'll eventually be able to remove its remains without dislodging your new plantlets. (pro tip: pick a pot with a drainage hole and a gritty soil)
Hi. I was wondering if I can save my kalanchoe the one that has lots of flowers(pink). We got a cold freeze and everything turned from green to like a burgundy. It still has some green areas. Help please!! Ty. My daughter saved one from a store now she has to save it from her mommy 😣. Ty in advance. New subscriber
I can't say for sure without seeing the plant, but it's possible! Turning green to burgundy is a natural stress response for succulents. What would be worrying is if the freeze was so cold or lasted long enough to cause permanent frost damage. This would show up as squishy, juicy, translucent bits, similar to rot. If you have these, cut them off and try to propagate any remaining healthy tissue. Good luck! Annie
@@Mountaincrestgardens thank you. It was for a few days colder than normal. I had it in my greenhouse but it was still too cold. I cut off all the leaves and as my squishy stuff as possible. I don't know how I can add a picture to show you. Is it possible to propagate with just the branch??
@@michellecastro2475 Not possible to send me a photo, but it is possible to re-root Kalanchoe from a stem cutting! mountaincrestgardens.com/faqs-help/#reamaze#0#/kb/propagation/propagating-succulents-step-by-step-guide
They sure can! You'll want a bright grow light that's on for at least 12 hours per day and placed within 7" of the plant. For more details on succulent grow lights, check out this blog post: mtncr.co/growlight
Yay for your first flower! Succulents almost always prefer a gritty, well-draining soil over potting soil. I'd recommend amending it with extra mineral grit, e.g. pumice, perlite, or coarse sand. Many garden centers sell a bagged cactus & succulent soil. Usually, I recommend mixing even "cactus & succulent soil" with an equal volume of mineral grit, but Kalanchoe are some of the more flexible, forgiving succulents, so you'd probably be fine as long as you don't water too frequently. Annie
I received tiny plants/seeds and planted and am WAITING for them to grow. They are growing but SO SLOWLY! How long does it take for me to see a decent size baby plant?
That depends on the type of plant. I've had cactus seeds take years to grow into a 1" wide stem. But a small Kalanchoe plant can usually grow noticeably each month. Are these seeds you're germinating? Are they getting lots of sunshine and regular moisture?
It depends, but 3"-4" deep is a good place to start if you're transplanting from our 2" pots. Deeper pots can hold more water and take too long to dry out for a succulent's liking.
I just got one for valentines day and it came with super soaked soil! Should I replant it in a cactus mix or just wait for it to dry for a few more days? I thought it wasnt a good idea to replant right away but the soil has been wet for several days
You can replant now! Get it into dry, gritty soil and a pot with a drainage hole and don't water until the leaves start to feel thirsty and a bit limp.
I have a Paddle Plant, I've had it for a little over a year now ... I had no idea what it was when I bought it, I just thought it was cool. It's reeeeeeally stretched out tho and it's not growing anymore paddles 😬 in fact I've lost a couple due to my dog knocking it over outside. I'm not sure how to fix this, should I just cut the top off and replant like I've heard some people say? It has a lot of the white powder, which I guess is somewhat typical?
Stretched out means it's not getting enough sunlight. First, I would gradually move it to a sunnier location over the course of a week. Once it's healthy, then you can cut the top of the stem and re-root it for a second chance at a healthy, compact form. And yes, a covering of white powder is normal for Paddle Plant. You should get some better red tones when it's in more sun too! Annie
It could be that it's short on sunlight or nutrients. I'd try moving it closer to a sunny window and/or re-planting it in fresh soil for a quick nutrient boost for spring. Annie
It's tough to say without knowing your growing conditions, but more sunlight, repotting in fresh soil, or applying a bit of fertilizer can often encourage blooming.
Okay. Maybe I’m a disaster, but my jades, aloes, snake plants all do great and survive. I’ve even propagated portions I’ve trimmed off of my bigger plants into other plants. However, my kalenchoes that I’ve been gifted always die and I was given a fairly healthy looking mother of 1000s and it straight up died as soon as I began taking care of it. 🙃
It's the funniest thing, but it does seem like some people get along real well with certain genera, and not so much with others. I for one have a pretty easy time with most succulents, but then String of Pearls is always a struggle. Annie
Omg please help my mother of thousand leaves are hardening discolored and withering I believe it’s over watered how do I fix it I have another succulent that’s doing the same thing I also see little bugs in the soil please help
Sorry, it's very tough to accurately diagnose a plant without seeing it or knowing its environmental conditions. Certainly for bugs in the soil, you'll want to re-pot into new, gritty soil and spray the plant with isopropyl alcohol. And if it is overwatered, it needs to have any squishy, discolored tissue removed then be left in a sunny spot to dry out, to prevent the spread of rot. Be sure you're using a container with a drainage hole and that you only water when the soil is completely dry AND the leaves feel more flexible. Annie
@@Mountaincrestgardens I wish you could see it also I put them outside for a few days. I repotted them Sunday in dry soil today they look really bad!!! Idk what to do🥺
Not wrong! People pronounce plant names all sorts of ways. Technically "ch" sounds like "k" in botanical Latin (like in the word "echo"). We're not too fussed on how folks pronounced plant names, but Latin names are fun to learn about! We made a video about pronunciation here: ua-cam.com/video/2qtMRi3D9PY/v-deo.htmlsi=AvU9uAgML0gdyyFT
All of the plants you're calling 'easy' are not my success stories. Like all of them hate my apartment & idk what to do!!! They loved where I used to live & the giant bay window.
Oh no! Sounds like they've moved to a spot with less sun? Might be time to supplement with a grow light. Here's info on how bright they need to be, how close to your plants, and how long they need to be on. Also a couple light recommendations: mountaincrestgardens.com/blog/succulent-grow-light-recommendations/ If you're looking to add new types, Gasteria and Jade plants tend to be able to tolerate the lowest light of all succulents: mountaincrestgardens.com/shade-succulents/?_bc_fsnf=1&Recommended+Light+Conditions=Low+Indoor+Light

Is it better to grow succulents and cactus in shallow pots or deep pots ?
It depends, but 3"-4" deep is a good place to start if you're transplanting from our 2" pots. Deeper pots can hold more water and take too long to dry out for a succulent's liking.

You should get some better red tones when it's in more sun too!

How do I get my blossfeldiana to bloom ?
It could be that it's short on sunlight or nutrients. I'd try moving it closer to a sunny window and/or re-planting it in fresh soil for a quick nutrient boost for spring.

I named mine camila
My kalanchoe propogated beautifully and look very healthy but stopped flowering after the first set of flowers fell off. How do I make it bloom again?
It's tough to say without knowing your growing conditions, but more sunlight, repotting in fresh soil, or applying a bit of fertilizer can often encourage blooming.
Nice
Me: I dont know how to propagate plants
Mother of Thousands: Fine, I will do it myself.
I've always heard Ka - lawn - cho
Full strength 70 % alcohol ?
Awesome!!

@@Mountaincrestgardens I wish you could see it also I put them outside for a few days. I repotted them Sunday in dry soil today they look really bad!!! Idk what to do🥺
I've never heard it called "kalan-koee...Ka-lan-cho is how I've always heard it called and I'm 73yrs old. Have I been wrong all these years??
I have heard…extensively, that kalanchoe is quite edible. Sooo…🤷♂️
Also a couple light recommendations: mountaincrestgardens.com/blog/succulent-grow-light-recommendations/
If you're looking to add new types, Gasteria and Jade plants tend to be able to tolerate the lowest light of all succulents: mountaincrestgardens.com/shade-succulents/?_bc_fsnf=1&Recommended+Light+Conditions=Low+Indoor+Light
You are beautiful!
Talk about ... succulent...
