@@XENONEOMORPH1979completely misses the point. People love this film and they want it to be preserved. The Alien 4K release is still a reference disc for AV quality. I’m not someone who thinks Aliens would have turned out the same- the movie is a lot rougher around the edges. But what we got is a lot worse. It’s not just the heavy handed DNR and color grade changes- you can at least argue the merits of that stuff. But what the AI does to the picture is awful. Fine lines and wrinkles on actors faces now look like scars. Eyeballs melt and distort. There is an unnatural and very artificial sharpness to the image. On the whole the picture doesn’t look stable- exactly like all those AI generated animations on UA-cam. Imagine someone taking your favorite album and having an obnoxious asshole rap over the top of the entire thing. That’s what the Aliens 4K Bluray is like.
Cameron was silly to react like this. People are right to be so disappointed if a 4K transfer is poorly done, especially when it's such a big release as Aliens .
@@interdimensionalsteve8172 It would have probably been for the best had Cameron just ignored the controversy. That said, I watched a video about the changes made for 4K rerelease of Aliens. There is zero chance I would have noticed any of the changes and even now that I know about them, I can't say it would bother me.
We don't want the film "improved" we just want the original artifact cleaned up a tad- like you'd clean a painting. Trying to remove the grain of an old film is like trying to remove the weave of the canvas from a painting! It's part of the thing itself!
> Use AI upscalers to produce slop transfers of classic movies > Fans point out flaws > Producer puts on surprised Pikachu face and declares “how dare you?” I watched this, didn’t like it at all. I prefer the old Blu-Ray version. Some of these older Sci-Fi movies I greatly prefer having some film grain.
We've been waiting 20 years for a high definition release of some of these movies. The excuse we were given for the wait was that Cameron insisted on doing it himself so it was "perfect". They're pretty far from perfect. Cameron is the one who needs to get some perspective.
Everyone should get a life but Cameron gets to obsess for 40 years on an endless series of rereleases and tweaks that are seriously hit or miss. So shut up and give him your money. Again. He hasn’t made a good movie in almost 30 years, just tech demos and milking the fan bases of his older films. These people are all the same. They live up their own asses.
I gotta say, considering how grainy the original film stock was, this new transfer should be lauded for retaining so much detail. I'm genreally skeptical when it comes to remasters (especially with music), but this is nowhere near as egregious as some are making it out to be.
The 4k makes things TOO CLEAR and TOO HIGH RESOLUTION! Part of the charm of the first two Alien movies was the dank, grainy, dark made with a certain color filter that made it a darker hue. You couldn't see too many details between the resin hive & the Aliens, so there could be one hidden in every corner. Plus by smoothing out the characters with AI, it gives it a CGI-ish look sometimes. I like the remastered version for the 20th Anniversary Limited Edition with the better sound, but this is too well lit & too detailed.
Yeah this is a point well made. I will concede having watched it on 4k and blu ray a fair bit in preparation for this video that both versions, but the 4K especially, kinda show up the matt paintings and the now primitive special effects shots more. It’s really apparent that the xenomorphs are actors in suits more than ever. But maybe that also comes with just watching so much in a short space of time. Thanks for your comment mate, a good point well made 👍
He should have more respect for his work. If you're going to spend hundreds of hours making a great film, with a great legacy, why skimp and screw up a remastering to save time and money? To then not be man enough to accept his screw-up is poor, especially for an artist/technician of his standing.
What is great about 35mm looking films it’s like observing these character’s lives through a dirty window which is what makes them feel more authentic & real whereas if something is too clean & digitised it doesn’t feel so real and takes me out of the story half the time. The original look of Aliens just like with Alien works for it because despite being set in the future everything is still gonna be grimy, gritty and rough for people’s lives in space more realistic than let’s say the future of Star Trek. It’s very clear now that what made James Cameron the filmmaker he is today in the past he is clearly ashamed of which disappoints me because he should be the one that should be grateful for those opportunities instead of attacking fans & enthusiasts and fix his work properly instead of taking a page out of Disney’s book of modern dirty tactics
I don't mind it so much if its done well, like aliens & the abyss ( in contrast to true lies and t2) and the fact we got brilliant dolby atmos is making the purchase an easy choice for me. What is my biggest gripe ( especially with the purist sympathisers) is when films like predator and alien get no audio upgrades. I still remember vividly the crap that came out when predator was released on 4k ," this is how the director intended it " BS, no its a lazy re release by the studio and I'm pretty sure the directors ( apart from Nolan) would utilise the best video and audio available to them if it was available back then. Anyways great video, I feel a wee bit better after my Sunday morning rant 😂
Haha, I'm glad i've provided a safe space for you to come on and have your Sunday morning rant mate lol I agree with you tho, I always feel a bit cheated when no atmos or dts x upgrade. If you're reworking the image, you have to give the audio a go also in my opinion. By all means included the older tracks for all the space they'll take up on the disc but don't do half a job. Cheers for the comment mate 👍
Personally, I love the new remaster. It’s like seeing it for the first time. Cameron is right, Aliens was too grainy. The Quadrilogy DVD disk was appalling for grain and the blue ray not much better. This transfer looks incredible.
I can see the argument from both sides but like i say in the video, i like this new presentation and it will be what a i watch from now on. Thanks for your comment mate 👍😃
Agreed. I do not understand this love of grain. Grain is something that the makers of film stocks generally tried to minimize as much as possible. It's an artifact, a flaw, a limitation of film--and not a desirable one. So if, decades later, new technologies can improve the appearance of an old one, I am all for it. I think they did a fantastic job with the 4K transfer of _Aliens._ BTW, not only the picture. I thought the sound was equally impressive. Just my personal preference.
Having watched 38 years of grainy Aliens the 4K does make it feel like watching Aliens for the first time. Now you have options based on your preferences...
That’s how i see it mate. Although i think it’s a great film, it’s not one i’ve really watched a lot over the years so that’s also maybe a reason why the new transfer doesn’t bother me so much. I don’t have previous versions en-‘grained’ in 😉. Thanks for the comment mate 🏴
Aliens isn’t a sci-fi movie. It’s much more an action / horror war movie that just happens in a different time. You don’t necessarily want to see more detail at the cost of mood and atmosphere.
Considering the film stock they had to work with on the original Aliens, I think the latest 4k was done pretty well. Hate to say it but. Cameron's got a point. Buy whatever version you prefer, it really doesn't matter.
He's right about something thought, indirectly at least. People should really stop caring for this franchise and find something else to watch. I mean, fuck Cameron, let's go on and find something new.
The same could be said for the majority of the overgrown franchisees the studios keep pumping life into. Time to pull the plug on some of them for sure 👍
This whole mess gives me Buffer "remaster" vibes ... except with Cameron smearing salt in our wounds. The guy has gotten too used to have people eat undigested corn out of his shit.
That's a great point you make there mate about Aliens being futuristic so it makes abit more sense to clean it up and give it that more modern look compared to say true lies which screams 90s. He 100% would of shot it digitally back in the day if he had the technology available. Great video mate. Really enjoyed listening to your thoughts and appreciate that shout out 🤜🤛
Cheers Paul and you're very welcome for the plug 👍 Yeah I appreciate not everyone will agree with my thought process here but it's just my humble opinion / rationale over how I feel on the subject. Like everything in this game it's all subjective really. Glad you enjoyed the video mate 😃
Don‘t know about the disc but my Apple TV copy got „upgraded“ to 4K and I must say I absolutely hate it. There is basically no grain left, faces look horrifying so I got myself the old blu-ray with which I’m very pleased with!
See u make a good point here in that if u own digitally, they can do what they want with it, like upgrade to a perhaps inferior or substandard version. Glad ur enjoying the blu ray mate. They can’t change that 😊
I am in my sixties, so I first saw many of my favourite films on a 4:3 standard definition television, in black and white. If I were to announce that that is how I would prefer to view these films today, I think you would quite rightly consider me daft. I love seeing these films in the theatre (when it's possible) with modern digital projections. Or on my 4K television and surround-sound system. Believing that removing all the grain from a film is some kind of sacrilege is just idiotic to me. I believe that most directors and cinematographers, if they had had the technology when they were making their movies, would have removed as much grain as possible from the image. They would have considered it an improvement. Just as I'm sure they would have liked to remove the hiss and pops from the optical soundtracks of the day. I don't believe these technological limitations were ever considered positive assets by the vast majority of filmmakers. If you have some nostalgic fondness for seeing film grain or a piece of dust flit around the image because that's how you originally saw it, I can't argue with you. That's your subjective preference. But don't blame a filmmaker for wanting the picture to come as close to witnessing the events first hand, with your own eyes and ears, as possible. I believe the idea, for most directors, is to draw the audience into the frame. To make the technology disappear and for you to become lost in the story and characters--in short, to forget you're watching a movie at all. Film grain is not helping with that aim.
If you want a 35mm version of the film, get the 35mm print. Anything else IS a compromise and it is up to the artist how they want it represented on the medium its on. I get your feelings on DNR and I'm no great fan of it, but if you got the DVD version what would you expect? It's not the original format and I seriously doubt you would know the quality of the original print anyway. Look at it this way, his team and he has spent a stupid amount of time attempting to get the best representation of what it might look like if it were filmed today for today's audience. Revisionist, maybe, and it WILL piss off a few people...but only a few people (although you could argue these are the people that love the film the most...mostly ;)
Haha! Thank you very much for your kind words ☺️ It makes a change to be complimented on it. Usually it’s been people complaining about not being able to understand it! 😩 Thanks for your comment 😊🏴
@@JamesChapman-rz3uxlol. I still have a bunch for days I want to watch the original unimproved. Han shot first Star Wars and Apocalypse now were perfect as was
I dont particularly like waxy looking faces, but you don't get that with Aliens. Agree that this is a revision to the Blu-Ray and the transfer is great on that Blu-Ray. Purists best just stick with that. Personally, i enjoy both versions, At the end of the day, it's about the enjoyment of the film, whichever way you want to watch there are two cuts as well. There is more to life than transfers imo 😂
You are absolutely right Matt. I think ur last few sentences is how Cameron himself should have responded, at least if he didn’t want to properly defend and justify himself. I couldn’t believe actually how similar the blu and 4k looked on a screenshot in real life as you’d have seen in the video. There’s an argument to be made that a 4k was never really needed. I watched your video btw and am glad it heightened your enjoyment of the movie. I felt the same after watching. Cheers matt 😃👍
The thing is though, they haven't scrubbed all the grain from Aliens on 4k. I've watched it recently (on a 65 inch 4k TV) and I can still see grain in the image. Now granted, there's not as much grain as past transfers, but it's still there to a degree. OG commenter is right, I think purists are better off sticking to the previous Blu-ray release, or if they want even more grain then the DVD release.
It’s a $40 disc released on a dying and niche format. Is Cameron dumb? This is aimed at enthusiasts. Enthusiasts care about this stuff. And enthusiasts also tend to have good gear. I would like to ask the OP what display he watched this on. I watched it *once* on a 120” screen projecting from a 4k projector. I say once because I shut it off about an hour in and switched to the bluray. It was making me nauseous. It’s that bad. If your display is 50-80” you probably won’t notice the absolutely weird crap this ai upscale is doing to the picture.
@@sage11x if ur referring to me and not the original person who commented in this thread.. then i watched on a 65” sony a90j oled tv. Listened on 5.1.2 atmos setup. I have a 100” projector screen too but i have a 10 year old HD projector so couldn’t watch it that way. I intend to upgrade the projector down the line. I might try the new 2k blu ray on it tho to see if i can notice any weird AI stuff ur talking about 👍
I saw aliens upscaled 4K version on my Macbook XHDR screen and my gosh it looks so clinical ripley looks like a barbie doll removing that characteristic film grain is just sacrilege but yeah he does not like film grain and has a well documented obsession with everything looking digital it looks more like a game now with all that over detail.
Cameron pretty much shot every movie before Avatar with his trademark "blue steel" look (was he putting filters on his camera or post production processing) so it only makes sense he should have supervised the 4k transfer.
James Cameron is dead right. I'm a massive film fan, was once something biggish in the business at the VCD stage of digital movies and am sick and tired of hearing people going on and on about 'grain naturally preserved' 'grain resolves nicely' and on and on and on. Grain is a product of the physical process of film making back in the day, and is a visual equivalent of noise hiss on an audio tape. As such, grain is an unwanted extra created purely from the physical 'rub' of film through the gate elsewhere - unless the Director intends, for whatever reason, that he needs 'grain' on the image we'll see. The idea that preserving it is somehow faithful to the product is nonsense; that's merely faithful to the way you first saw a film and got used to it. If the Director can now get rid of it, on the grounds that the grain is an unwanted and (then) uncontrolled extra, and wants to, then of course he should.
I’m so glad he cleaned Aliens up don’t forget on modern TV’s all old films look shite picture quality in the 70’s 80’s the original starwars I would never watch as it was or as it’s aged they are not clean anymore as they have aged ? All original films age so why not take it into the 21st century I agree with him totally
I don't mind the new T2 print. Sure, it has, in parts, way to much grain removal but overall I personally think it's the best one out there. I understand some people prefer the extended cut and were disappointed the see that Cameron only restored the theatrical edition, but this was due to Cameron's hand being forced, at the time, to release a cut with the deleted scenes as shown in the pre-release trailers. Cameron's cut, as he's always stated, is the one released in theatres and also is the one I watch.
I still havent bought this yet because it came just as me and the Mrs did a rewatch. After "Romulus", im certainly ready for a rewatch now though. With it havning less grain, it will probably be less jarring if you were watch them in chronological order. Thanks for the heads up on the price slash Andy! Awesome video mate 🤘
You make a good point about the visual continuity. I think Alien, Romulus & Aliens will become a popular trilogy amongst the fans judging by the feedback for Romulus so far. Looking forward to seeing later today. Re. getting Aliens, I reckon by xmas it will be in the Disney 2 for £24 deal so i reckon most should hold out still but if you can't wait at least it's a bit cheaper currently. Thanks for watching buddy 😃
I couldn't agree with Cameron more, to be honest. I'd be pissed and hurt too if i went out of my way to remaster a film and bring it to 4K and in the best possible state, only to have ungreatful "fans" bitch and wine about the most nitpicky things. Some people are just never satisfied and would piss on a rose, rather than smell it. Cameron is 100% on point. If this is the reaction Cameron gets for these changes, I'd hate to see what fans think of George Lucas's changes to the Star Wars special editions.
The sooner Cameron realizes he isn’t God, the better off he’ll be. And the sooner a$$ kissers stop worshipping jag offs like Cameron, the better off we all will be.
The point is that it's a bad remaster. They AI scrubbed the grain away leaving LSD hallucinations in the images when nobody minded the grain in the first place. All they needed to do was rescan the negatives in 4k and adjust the colors and contrast so it looked as close as possible to how it looked in theaters. Literally everybody would have been overjoyed with that.
@@73rmin8r do you speak on behalf of the entire planet? You don't speak for me, coz I love the 4K Aliens remaster. For someone who claims to know better than James Cameron, please let me know which films you've directed.
God forbid we expect the man to take pride in his work- but I get it. He’s making 30 Avatar sequels and going to the bottom of the ocean. He’s busy. But that doesn’t change the fact that the Aliens 4K Bluray is a travesty. Watch it on a normal sized display- it’s probably fine. But watch it on a 100” TV or, worse, a 120-150” projector screen and you’ll very clearly see the issues with this release. It looks awful. What this ‘process’ does to human faces is damn near nightmare inducing. Wrinkles that look like scars. Warping eye balls. It creates this weird uncanny valley effect that makes me sick. Even if you’re not a stickler for this stuff this is a bad transfer. In the immortal words of Mr. Plinkett: you might not notice, but your brain will.
I might be amongst the minority which quite like it but i can objectively say that if authenticity is the key factor in which we measure the strength of 4K transfer… then this is pretty rotten. I haven’t tried on my projector as it’s only 2k capable but might try the accompanying blu ray disc. Again thanks for your comment, a well articulated opinion 👌
The problem with Aliens and True Lies more so is the smooth look of the faces and textures with the DNR overuse. Losing detail and just smooths everything out. Looks distracting
I’m not a massive fan of grain probably since I had aliens special edition on laserdisc. I found that really grainy and coming from vhs it was very noticeable. Having spent about £80 on it I was a bit disappointed. Probably now I wouldn’t have been as bothered about it but in my late teens I was. Cameron did remove a lot of the grain when the blu-ray came out and if I remember right it was widely praised for retaining detail. I’m waiting for aliens and true lies to go into HMVs 2 for £30 and I’ll pick them up.
Films like "Natural Born Killers" and "Run Lola Run" are examples of 'film stock' of all qualities being artistic choices. To 'digitally clean up' these films would be completely missing the point. The best way of viewing Aliens has always been on Laserdisc and a CRT.
Unfortunately not things that are super easy to come by anymore tho. I'd like to see laserdisc running in person one day. Cameron just used the stock available at the time, I don't think it was so much and artistic choice as you say in this case, just the hand he was dealt. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment mate 👍😃
Yeah ur right but i’m just saying not forever, this is a version put out. The original elements still exist, as do the previous home video versions. The interesting conversation is does the artist have the right to change the their original works?
@@ElectricGeek Yes the original artist does have that right. As the Star War special editions demonstrate 'just because you can doesn't mean you should'. I remember Spielberg releasing a 'new' version of ET...which was withdrawn because "It's compromised the original vision" ( paraphrase ). There's no right or wrong answer here. I personally believe in preservation not re-imagining. I never liked the digital work that was done to Aliens a few years ago to 'fix' a special effect, ironically this new master highlights even more "issues" with the effects ( practical ).. are they going to 'fix' those too?... and when will it stop? At the point its no longer the same film?
@@davidbergin2086 I know what we can expect from the audio. Dolby Atmos from a film that only had a mono audio track, which hasn’t been preserved or included. The original blu ray for terminator is very good i think. I think for most it will be fine. I think we know what we're getting with the 4K 🫠 I'm booked to see the 4K version on Sat night at my odeon...
@@ElectricGeek Yeah that blu ray has a lovely transfer. it stays true to the source. We will wait and see what the 4k has in store. Enjoy that 4k viewing Saturday night! Will you be doing a review/reaction video for it?

I’ve just watched Aliens Expanded and some of his personal retellings of thing’s he did on set did not impress, although he did show ‘some’ regret over his behaviour in hindsight. I think he’s def a ‘toys out the pram’ kinda guy.
I haven't been blown away since Blu-Ray HD was introduced, honestly. 2001: A Space Odyssey was the first one I saw. 4K is a little better, but the clarity from DVD to Blu-Ray was like going from VHS to DVD, for me.
Oh snap! What you know about MF DOOM!? Major props and respect. Welp, I guess I should go ahead and finally upgrade and get to the 4K Cameron transfer. You convinced me.
Interesting as a lot of others say the bigger screen really shows up these 'AI artifacts' people allege. Nice to see someone enjoying it on a large screen too 👍
Saw this movie on vhs and it was great even with that formats limitations and “glorious” 480p resplution and one or two tracking issues Saw it on the new 4k and its still the great same movie, plot, action scenes, great cast etc etc People are overly focussing on all the wrong things No wonder cameron said this
Well said mate, I do think cameron has a point also. He just made it with a very broad and clumsy stroke. There was no need to be bitter about it. That's a choice.
@@ElectricGeek id say a lot of of the attacks on cameron have been broad and clumsy -> to start with. and hes just reacting in kind. just on the comments here hes been accused of smelling his own farts and labelled a has been and much worse on other forums over this 4k upon its release -> hardly sophisticated either 😆 sometimes the language cameron used is the only language that the people who started the attacks understand. so i can see why he said it.
@@palmvegas7878 Yeah fair one mate. I have been guilty of laughing at some of the comments I must say 🙋🏻♂ He's a public figure tho, should be held to a higher standard I think. I'm sure he still sleeps fine at night on his bed of millions lol
Thank you mate and yes this is absolutely it... the older versions are also still there for those who want to seek them out. Even disney+ is currently still rocking what appears to be the old 1080p, grainier transfer, at least to my eyes anyway.
Slightly off topic; Back when I was picking out our Blu-Ray player in a brick n mortar shop I sent the wife to grab a couple disks to try it out. Lol she came back with a pile of movies none of which were under 30 years old. Not exactly the ask.
@@ElectricGeek as impressed as I was that she remembered I was looking for the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films that wasn’t exactly going to demonstrate the improvement of Blu-Ray over standard DVDs. Lol lol
I thought that shot looked pretty good snd there’s virtually no difference on the standard blu ray either. I think high resolution can sometimes leave older sets looking a bit less realistic as it shows up more than it would have done back in the day. Thanks for your comments mate 👍
@@ElectricGeek I have the Alien Legacy DVD box set, which came out in 1999, and the shot does not appear cartoonish on my Aliens DVD. I suppose some films weren't meant to be in high definition.
Was waiting for something like that from Cameron. Sounds like him, based honestly most of us eye roll at the basement dwellers. But constructive criticism should always exist.
I can’t hear the dialogue at all, I’ve paid £25 for a 4K Blu-ray and the picture is fine to me but I can’t hear the sound properly, especially when they’re talking. They should have a disclaimer on 4K Blu-ray that says “doesn’t work with a normal soundbar”.
Anybody seen that footage of tarantino and Cameron next to each other on stage at some event. And they're talking about how amazing avatar is, and QT says "why because it's in 3d." 😂
@@ElectricGeek I noticed you hearted this comment but not the other one. Did I go too far with the ball sucking?! 🙂 (Funnily enough, that's something James Cameron once asked his wife!)
So true ! I love James Cameron , punch in the noses. On my pro Sony projector Aliens is tremendous ! Grain is disgusting ! Some should go back😮 to VHS ..
Excellent video. I think that due to the large amount of popular videos on UA-cam that are click bait with "Worst Ever!" in the thumbnails has put film makers on the offense these days. Although I am sure that the criticisms on the Cameron releases are fairly justified, the hyperbolic way its been brought to my attention is kind of toxic and puts in my mind the idea of some sad weirdo living in his mum's basement yelling into the wind! Ultimately its just going to scare filmmakers away from supervising a release of one of their classic films if they think that they will get people spitting flames like they did about True Lies.
They get so wrapped up in the advancements in tech and a chance to make money on a re-release they forget the artful, emotional impact the look of a beloved film can have with an audience. They always go too far and ruin everything.
The same number of people, if not more people, would have bought the 4k Blu Ray of all they'd done is rescan the negatives at 4k and tweak the colors just right. All this AI grain scrubbing is something nobody who buys premium physical media sees as a positive thing.
I will never watch a 4K version of this classic. It was eagerly anticipated back in the day, more so when the special edition came out. Seriously, when laserdisc came out and I picked up my copy of Terminator 2, I was blown away. I think I will leave it there. True Lies, The Abyss too, I will never watch these in 4K. It’s a ‘restoration’ too far and frankly, the ‘transfers’ do not look real.
@@ps5andstuffhere I have no doubt, but in viewing my Laserdisc recently and having a great admiration for it and the ‘original’ Cameron look… Aliens, The Abyss and T2, I’ll stick with those… all these new processes for restoring original works is diluting what was original. 1977’s Star Wars is an example of that, I still have my original VHS and a ‘pirate copy’ also on VHS from 1980… if I didn’t have them, I think the true essence of the piece would even be lost on me… Enjoy the upscales by all means.
I thought the 4K transfer is okay nothing in my opinion is really that bad. Now I did recently watch Jaws and Twister in 4K and those movies were completely remastered and I will admit they were way better. I don’t have a problem with the AI upgrade yes if they went in and remastered it from the ground up it would probably look much better but it’s still very good better then the Blu Ray which had a lot of digital noise. I don’t agree with Cameron he should not be firing back at people but I also see his side to it looks good and I think some people are way to picky.
There’s definitely some truth to what he’s saying mate, just a little rich coming from him is all and he didn’t have to rise to the haters. He should be above that IMO. You’re right tho, yes it could be better but it’s not the worst thing in the world. I actually quite enjoyed the presentation. Jaws on 4K is like the gold standard. Looking forward to checking twisters out in October over here. Thanks for your comment buddy 😃👍
great thoughts! i don't give a damn about his moaning. Cameron does it a lot so it's just typical lol I look forward to checking the 4k blu-ray myself.
Yeah seems to be the case judging by the comments. In his case i can certainly separate the art from the man tho! It's definitely one you need to see for yourself mate as it's very divisive. Cheers badger! 🦡🫡
Personally that's what 4k is about for me. I have most films on dvd, blueray and even vhs. This gives me the option to watch the version I choose. Not every film film needs a 4k release, blueray is fine.
I totally agree that not every film needs a 4k but it's nice to have the option I guess. Blu ray is solid format still that rivals even 4k streaming IMO
who are 4k discs made for if not movie appreciators who care about grain etc. If you dont care about that stuff you watch it at 720p with ads on netflix or whatever. If you care you pay money for the 4k discs. Cameron is a known dick hole though I guess, its not news.
And I thought David Fincher of Seven is not as bad, 7 still not out, cos it got postponed, it should never of been promoted, At least Zavvi put December 31,but really how long should you pre order a title, I'd say max 3 months, due Early 2025.
Yeah that's right, completely forgot i had pre-ordered that! 😂 I agree with you, 3 months seems reasonable. Supposed they get away with it as most site don't take your cash up front so no real harm done. Thanks for your comment mate.
Im not a film buff but every time i watch a video about a 4k transfer its usually people complaining, even classics , at first I thought yeah okay it's just nerds , now its too consistent makes me feel as a problem
I think maybe the reason is because there’s a very slight upgrade really from 2k to 4k/hdr so people are annoyed / disappointed maybe when it’s not up to scratch or even a back step. It’s very subjective whether or not a new hdr colour grading is ‘better’ than the sdr or not, so i think it creates more debate and polarising views. It’s also why youtubers like myself have came about to help people navigate it, as 4ks aren’t cheap
That’s great advice and all. But he needs to ask himself where he’d be without people supporting his films. These celebrities need to stop being so narrow minded and ignorant.
I totally agree, all celebs in this particular industry would do well not to lose sight of that. Take Keanu Reeves for example. Thanks for your comment mate 👍
From my experience 90% of the time, I've had a much better viewing experience of films I've bought on 4k over blu ray. I tend to buy my favourite films on 4k and the other enjoyables on blu ray.
I don't really care what Cameron thinks of me. generally. I dig his movies but like some other Hollywood filmmakers, I'm learning there's more to them than meets the eye with most nowadays. As for the movie on 4k , I'm in the air on both versions of some films I get on 4k or bluray. If anything, keep both versions. Hell, Aliens even comes with the Bluray. Some look better and some you can't see much difference at all. I guess it just depends.
You are correct about there being a very marginal difference at times and also sometimes you need a pretty high end setup to even see the difference in my opinion which the majority of people won't have for cost reasons etc thanks for your comment mate 👍
I'm watching this on a QD-OLED and I don't see any difference in the blu-ray vs 4K blu-ray side-by-side screenshoots. Like it's to the point where I feel like you've maybe shown screenshoots from just one format and not both on accident. lol
I know right? But i can assure u i checked and double checked. The video isn’t in HDR and downscaled to HD on youtube so u can use them as a crude reference only. I also thought i’d made a mistake when i made them up so checked again. If u look really closely u’ll see they are not exactly frame for frame. Just FYI, settings wise on my 65” sony a90j. Its in custom mode (not calibrated), no processing on other than smooth gradation set to ‘low’. For blu ray shots, medium peak luminance, brightness at 20. For 4k, high peak luminance, brightness max (50). Dolby Vision Dark mode 👍 Thanks for watching mate 😃
I’d be surprised if it wasn’t tbh. We’ll see how it looks when i get a hold of it. I actually think the existing blu ray of the terminator is really good
Cameron likes to put the sharpening and contrast and brightness features of his tv to maximum. That is a certain way to ruin any film look. And using AI is horrendous. At least in its current shape and form. Imagine things that are not there.
Even if Mr. Cameron didn't use top notch film, the material allowed for very high resolution, basically down to molecular structure level. It is guaranteed, the possible resolution is far beyond 4k or 8k. So there should be visible diference between the two works. Yet it's not there. Bonus track: Cameron goes off on the overly needy fans. Anyways: the movie is a masterpiece.
Hi I really hate when they over digitalise an old movie [I don’t like many modern films due to this too] it can end up looking CGI and though the cover art is nice funnily enough it looks like a cartoon
It's just the evolution in cinema sadly. Nothing lasts forever. At least some directors are still shooting on film or at the very least transferring to it afterwards like the DP Greig Fraser does (The Batman, Dune etc). One of the all time great DPs in my opinion is Roger Deakins and he's not shot on film for years, in fact he enthusiastically promotes the use and practicality of digital photography and yet he's produced some of the most beautiful cinematic images in recent years; Skyfall, Sicario, Bladerunner 2049 & 1917 to name but a handful. Thanks for your comment mate 👌
James Cameroon hasn't made a decent movie since titanic, all these old directors from the 70s n 80s are grumpy old men now. Who wants to see blue people on a planet for 4 flipping movies first avatar was something different, avatar 2 same crap instead of land we have water 3rd avatar maybe wind and fire what a joke.
Your not the first to comment this. People really seem to dislike avatar man. Avatar is a weird franchise that no one seems to talk about expect to diss yet they are two of the most commercially successful movies of all time. I appreciate them both but was surprised when 2 made the money it did. That’s not a billion dollar movie in my opinion
This was my issue with the comment. He’s a notorious perfectionist himself, yet slagging his fans, fellow enthusiasts who just want to see things as best as possible
I prefer to see it with DNR to the full, I like clean, sharp video quality, as you said rightly, sci Fi movies should look timeless, and I love Aliens looking as stunning as it does on the new 4k transfer done by Mr Cameron. I do not think he has a right to bash people who do not like that, exactly we are the ones who spend our money on his and other directors movies to rewatch ant treasure so we have a right to an opinion. Thank you for a great video .
Cameron's just trying to polish up his old work so it looks like the slick and artificial crap that's being pitched to audiences all the time now. This latest Alien rehash, Romulus, is nothing but a sloppy pastiche of all the rest of the cash-ins on Scott's original, which stands alone in its greatness. Cameron's Aliens simply started a second-rate monster-movie franchise. I can't wait for him to slick up THE TERMINATOR. He'll probably photoshop Arnold's old-school physique with bigger veins, tighter waist, maybe some tattoos, and a slight nose job. Cameron's comments are an an old man's middle finger to internet content creators, who he seems to consider nothing but a bunch of geek trolls.
the purists have held back the frame rate to a horrible 24fps and they even want grain? add your own grain filter and skip frames so you get 24, don't force it on the rest of us

Except it wasn't poorly done. At all. Terminator 2 was broken, but Aliens looks amazing.
Wow. First World, white person problem if there ever was one.

I watched this, didn’t like it at all. I prefer the old Blu-Ray version. Some of these older Sci-Fi movies I greatly prefer having some film grain.
James Cameron: "Stop loving my movie so much and caring how it's presented!"
Pretty much 🤦🏻♂️
We've been waiting 20 years for a high definition release of some of these movies. The excuse we were given for the wait was that Cameron insisted on doing it himself so it was "perfect".
They're pretty far from perfect. Cameron is the one who needs to get some perspective.
Well, now it's making sense. If he did it and people are complaining it doesn't look good, he's taking it personally. lol
He’s tripping, the transfers look awful, especially true lies
Met him couple years ago, he came off as a complete asshole, so not at all surprised about these comments.
Well they say u should never meet ur idols. Disappointing to hear all the same tho. Thanks for your comment pal 👍
Hearing the way The Abyss was made is enough to tell us that. I'm sure people are merely assets to him. Those who aren't are just in his way.
Explain?
Everyone should get a life but Cameron gets to obsess for 40 years on an endless series of rereleases and tweaks that are seriously hit or miss. So shut up and give him your money. Again.
He hasn’t made a good movie in almost 30 years, just tech demos and milking the fan bases of his older films.

Thanks for your comment mate, a good point well made 👍
You really can’t hate Hollywood enough.

Personally I like the grain, it's certainly better than this hideous waxy sheen that makes it looks like a fucking computer game! 😋
The 4k UHD Aliens is Awesome! 🎉🎉🎉
Nice to see someone give it some love ☺️
Having watched 38 years of grainy Aliens the 4K does make it feel like watching Aliens for the first time. Now you have options based on your preferences...
That’s how i see it mate. Although i think it’s a great film, it’s not one i’ve really watched a lot over the years so that’s also maybe a reason why the new transfer doesn’t bother me so much. I don’t have previous versions en-‘grained’ in 😉. Thanks for the comment mate 🏴
@@ElectricGeek We all saw what you did there.
@@lanolinlight haha! 😉 Sometimes I just can't help myself ☺
Really enjoyed listening to your thoughts and appreciate that shout out

Cheers Paul and you're very welcome for the plug 👍
Yeah I appreciate not everyone will agree with my thought process here but it's just my humble opinion / rationale over how I feel on the subject.

Do you have problems with sound mate? I can’t hear the dialogue at all, it’s so quiet.

I think depends on the kind of story. Aliens for me is a very dirty or I should say a very used universe. So the grain works for me.
They have nothing but contempt for the "great unwashed".
@@ElectricGeek The point is that that artistic vision has been changed from the original release, regardless of original intention.

Saw it on the new 4k and its still the great same movie, plot, action scenes, great cast etc etc
People are overly focussing on all the wrong things
No wonder cameron said this
Well said mate, I do think cameron has a point also. He just made it with a very broad and clumsy stroke. There was no need to be bitter about it. That's a choice.
@@ElectricGeek id say a lot of of the attacks on cameron have been broad and clumsy -> to start with. and hes just reacting in kind.
just on the comments here hes been accused of smelling his own farts and labelled a has been and much worse on other forums over this 4k upon its release -> hardly sophisticated either 😆
sometimes the language cameron used is the only language that the people who started the attacks understand.
so i can see why he said it.
@@palmvegas7878 Yeah fair one mate. I have been guilty of laughing at some of the comments I must say 🙋🏻♂ He's a public figure tho, should be held to a higher standard I think. I'm sure he still sleeps fine at night on his bed of millions lol
Good points well made, as usual. At least the blu ray is still out there for those who don't like the AI transfers.
😂 she clearly has a certain taste your good lady. At least she was keen to do it. My mrs would of told me to f*#k off 😂
@@ElectricGeek as impressed as I was that she remembered I was looking for the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films that wasn’t exactly going to demonstrate the improvement of Blu-Ray over standard DVDs. Lol lol
Why do the cryosleep pods look like someone drew them into the frame?
😂😂
@@ElectricGeek I noticed you hearted this comment but not the other one. Did I go too far with the ball sucking?! 🙂 (Funnily enough, that's something James Cameron once asked his wife!)
Where's that?
@@themiddleplace **Ahem** Which one?
What other one do you mean mate? I’ve likely just missed it
For me, it’s the sound moving into Dolby Atmos more than the visuals.
Abyss looks very good
@@ps5andstuffhere I have no doubt, but in viewing my Laserdisc recently and having a great admiration for it and the ‘original’ Cameron look… Aliens, The Abyss and T2, I’ll stick with those… all these new processes for restoring original works is diluting what was original. 1977’s Star Wars is an example of that, I still have my original VHS and a ‘pirate copy’ also on VHS from 1980… if I didn’t have them, I think the true essence of the piece would even be lost on me… Enjoy the upscales by all means.
I remember nobody moaned about the Restoration of Titanic, Ironic or what?
I personally like the Terminator 2 and Aliens 4K transfers, with some slight misgivings, but I'll be take them over their 1080p predecessors.
Psst... (don't tell anyone but i quite like T2s transfer also 🤫 lol)
Cameron does it a lot so it's just typical lol
I look forward to checking the 4k blu-ray myself.
Yeah seems to be the case judging by the comments. In his case i can certainly separate the art from the man tho! It's definitely one you need to see for yourself mate as it's very divisive. Cheers badger! 🦡🫡
The 4k Aliens looks amazing. Watched it twice at home. People are weird.
Just saying I own Abyss great, passed on Aliens, own True Lies, seeing it later, Titanic omg keep it.
I'm just keeping the DVDs saving me all this trouble, no messing around with those... 👍
I will stick with upscaled blu ray
Solid option. It still looked great on my setup. It upscales well 👌 thanks for your comment mate 👍
@@ElectricGeek Exactly… also the late great John Candy. 👍
@ChrisRyder1995 Good ol’ uncle buck 😂
i still own the Bluray anthology collection and have zero interest in the 4k transfer tbh.
It’s a safe way to go. Still perfectly watchable and a good time to be had. This is really an optional ‘revision’. Enjoy ur boxset mate 😃
When I first read his comments I thought "surely this is fake news... Why would he say that?"
😔
Saw a review of a screening of the upcoming 4K release of The Terminator and it’s the same apparently. Scrubbed free of any grain.
I’d be surprised if it wasn’t tbh. We’ll see how it looks when i get a hold of it. I actually think the existing blu ray of the terminator is really good
Man ! The THX laser audio version of this movie is way better than this audio crap in 4k.
I’ve never heard it and sadly likely never will so i’ll take ur word for it! Thanks for your comment mate 😃
Cameron likes to put the sharpening and contrast and brightness features of his tv to maximum. That is a certain way to ruin any film look. And using AI is horrendous. At least in its current shape and form. Imagine things that are not there.
If the transfer is poor, then Cameron should take criticism on board. Without an audience any director is irrelevant.😮
You are right, the movie is a masterpiece regardless and that's what ultimately matters 👌😃
Hi I really hate when they over digitalise an old movie [I don’t like many modern films due to this too] it can end up looking CGI and though the cover art is nice funnily enough it looks like a cartoon
Given how much data you can fit on a blu ray id really like it if they just included a normal SD dvd quality with it tbh
For being such a perfectionist in the past. Cameron really seems like a big hypocrite lately.
You're very welcome my friend! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment too 👌😃
Cameron's just trying to polish up his old work so it looks like the slick and artificial crap that's being pitched to audiences all the time now.
Is your mom upstairs?
His right his films period take it or leave it
the purists have held back the frame rate to a horrible 24fps and they even want grain?
add your own grain filter and skip frames so you get 24, don't force it on the rest of us
I stick with dvd and blu-ray i really don't care about 4k
There is absolutely sense in this. Blu ray is actually the sweet spot i think for PM as far as quality vs price is concerned. I still like 4k tho i have to say. You be you mate and avoid all this 4K scandal! 😂 Good on ya 👍
