"maybe even when something bad happens to me/ I will order pizza/ instead of staying in my room/ just being scared/ feeding that bad energy/ maybe next time I will feed my stomach with pizza and relax/ it's the Brazilian way" that is a phrase worth to remember
tua conclusão no fim do vídeo é emocionante.
Your video perfectly captures what São Paulo is all about. São Paulo is a chaos filled with culture, as well as the center of a fiercely competitive corporate market. I think there’s still so much more for you to discover. As the guy in the video mentioned, we live here and still haven’t experienced everything the city has to offer. I was born and raised here, and I’m still amazed by new things all the time. Bad things can happen, like the power outage you experienced. But, living here, I can say that, statistically speaking, the bad things that might happen are far outweighed by the good the city has to offer. One last tip if you want to explore more: don’t travel too economically in São Paulo.
Louis was such a nice guy, actually everyone seemed to be very kind! It's sad that you'll probably never meet them again but again there are more such beautiful people on earth to talk to
I'm from Brasília, the capital, and actualy people from São Paulo are famous for beeing rude when compared to the rest o the country, to be fair people of my city, Brasília, as well have the fame of being a little jerks too.
Hi Dan, sorry to hear about your bad experience! I also need to point out how great the video and storytelling are! I loved how you made sure for your documentary to come full circle with the coin story.
kinda poetic what you said about são paulo in the end of the video. dancing through the chaos. that's exactly what it feels to me. i live in são paulo state, about 62 miles away from são paulo city and the vibe in my city is totally different and people from here doesn't like too much the idea of living in são paulo. feels too crazy for us.
I really appreciate the deep reflections about my country. Interestingly, the expression “everything ends up in pizza” is a metaphor about the politics, corruption, and the sense of impunity - there is no justice, nothing really happens to the corrupts, and they always find a way to get rid of the consequences (the pizza part). Thank you again for the warming and thoughtful video. One of the reasons that I left my country almost four years ago was the violence, but I still miss the people. 🇧🇷
🐢 Your honesty is something I have always admired about your videos, Dan. We have to be prudent about where we go and what we do, but letting reality scare us so much that we never leave home is a huge mistake as well. And I had to laugh a bit at your ever-adventurous spirit when you quickly decided to go to San Sebastiano -almost seemed random like you pulled the name out of a hat 😂😂😂 You are fearless in the best way possible!
i've only seen 3 minutes or so of this video and I was reminded of my coins from Mexico I have from the 80's. Missed you not sure if I missed the videos or you have been on break, but I can tell , at the start of this content, it's my favorite content from you. Nice to see you again, I've been along for the ride, basically.
I never seen before a "gringo" with this much of sensibility and niceness talking about our city! Thank you for sharing your perspective and I really hope you come back here. Greetings from a "paulistano"!!
"We end up in pizza" is a popular Brazilian expression. I've been living here for almost two years. So, yes. It's real. Dan, I remember how you were robbed in Mexico City very early in your stay there, and you said that you wouldn't let one bad person decide how you would view an entire city. That is the best attitude to have. I've never allowed myself to cower under a bed. I love Brazil. I love Mexico. I love Colombia. Do bad people exist? Sure. You can't control that and you can't let that dictate how you live your life.

I'm sorry that happened to you; that blackout was crazy and something I’ve never experienced before-at least, not that I can remember. This year has been especially chaotic, and it’s happened twice. Some people think it might have been sabotage because of the political tension between the left and the right, but we’ll probably never know for sure. I’m glad you’re okay and that the situation didn’t change your view of the city. I’m Paulista, and I love São Paulo. Some of my favorite places are Luz Park and the old city center. I hope you enjoyed São Sebastião as well-it’s one of the most beautiful coastal cities in São Paulo state. And yes, when everything seems to go wrong, we order pizza, just like the guy from the hostel staff told you. I don’t know why, though!
I love the format - you did a great job at dividing it into chapters! Too bad I didn't have the chance to meet up with you - let me know if you're ever here again
Also, what the receptionist meant is that there's a saying that goes like "acabar em pizza", which literally translates to "end in pizza" and it means that someone (usually a politician or a criminal) manages to do something bad and get away with it (and then enjoy some pizza, I guess?)
São Paulo is fascinating, I’m paulistana but I lived that kinf of situation when I lived in São Paulo more than once. It felt worse when happened when my daughter and husband were victims too. When this happens again, again and again, you wonder till when you be luck enough to survive. In my case, I lost all hope of seeing things get better. Then the great chance to move in Canada came in our lives and I took that oppottunity as if it were the only lifeline. After 16 years in great Montreal, I still think it was the best move of my life. Hi I am a paulistano. I was so happy seeing your video, you were really showing the Sao Paulo face, happines, beauty, busy. And than at the end I got sad because this that you passed through is also the Sao Paulo face, we are always afraid of being robbed or worse. This is a great city, yet is, but the politics corruption cause so much social inequality and the consequence is a sense of insecurity. I just discover you. I will keep watching you.
3:42 It's a Jackfruit tree, bro. We can see it's bearing many tender fruits. They will get big and ripe in around two months, producing sweet jackfruit.
Congrats. You got to experience Sao Paulo in its fullness, including the power outage, the issues with criminals, etc, which are unfortunately two things very common nowadays. Fortunately you're fine. So think of it as the cherry on top.
Nice one, Dan. I love how you share your thoughts on travel...the good and the bad. That's life. How lovely are the people you have met here in São Paulo. Maybe you will one day read the novel in the book box written by a Canadian (Station Eleven) ☮
The months of December and January are rainy times in São Paulo, power cuts are quite normal, there are many trees in the city that end up falling in storms, not to mention that the company that takes care of the city's energy is not Brazilian and was bought by a Italian energy company which only made it worse, the Italians only aim for profit and provide a terrible service, but thankfully everything ended well. 😊
Awesome video bro! Next time you are there, go to the Liberdade district-it's the Japanese neighborhood. Brazil has the largest diaspora population of Japanese people in the world.
Thank you so much for this amazing video! I need some advice: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How can I transfer them to Binance?
The power company that distributes energy in Sao Paulo is italian by the way and and it is not a generalized problem through the country it is a specific problem related to this company and heavier storms than usual that reaches the power lines which are not subterranian here.
The pizza thing is more of a saying than an actual culture. The saying would translate to something like "it finished in pizza". We say that when something bad happens, or someone does something bad and suffers no consequences for it. I'm very sorry you went through this scary episode man, Brazil is a great place, but criminality kind of ruins it.
Well… Sao Paulo is the same as any other city. You must be careful every where. I got robbed in Paris and in New York. The best is always to have a Paulistano around… by the way I live in Los Angeles for 20 years but I was born in Sao Paulo. I think you are very couragous to get your camera and phone out in the streets to film for youtube. Just one thing: you need to try Sao Paulo pizza! It is the best and have different toppings 😘❤️
I believe the first meal in the alley was kinda overpriced for such a small plate, but it seems to be in a touristic spot so...I don't get what people find "touristic" about this graffiti alley, but whatever. But you can eat better and cheaper even in São Paulo. With ~10 USD you can "all you can eat" in a steakhouse in Americana, a town founded by american Confederates refugees 1h drive from São Paulo. I know you're canadian, but there's no canadian colony as far as I know. PS: insecurity sucks but what frustrates us most is the sense of impunity. "It ends in pizza", as corrupt politicians go eating to mock us, after they get absolved from their crimes for the people they named into the judiciary. Police arrest bandits; socialist-indoctrinated or corrupt judges releases them soon after. And while I had my dog shot and a gun to my had when I was 13yo, the first time I was mugged was last year in Europe. I was in Barcelona and 2 thugs were following us in the Metro. Once one jumped my brother, I threw him into the ground and armlocked him, but no one helped, including my brother. After I saw no one gave a fk, I let the guy go fearing he'd turn around and st@b me. We went to the "Mossos d'Esquadra", the catalan police, but they also didn't give a fk either, which is why I evade as much taxes as I can because the state only exist to serve itself.
I think what the hostel receptionist might've said is "it all ended in pizza" (tudo acabou em pizza), which is a phrase from political commentary where something like a corruption scandal goes unpunished, so it ends in pizza In politics I think it means like... everyone just shrugged off the problem and went on with their lives as if nothing happened, which amusingly is exactly what happened at the hostel in your case I used to hear this phrase on TV during the mensalão scandal in 2005, and to me as a teenager at the time it evoked images of politicians sharing stolen assets like slices of a pizza, but I think the intended image is simply the corrupt gathering up at a pizzeria and celebrating not being punished
Will you come in Paraguay? 🇵🇾 You could visit Encarnación City also known as "EncarnaYork" 😂 Asunción is the Capital of the country. I live close from Asunción, if you come, you are invited to stay at my home. 😊
Exactly! As a Brazilian, seeing the expression 'end up in pizza' play out literally made me laugh out loud. We definitely don’t eat pizza after a tragedy-it’s just a saying that means the incident wasn’t properly investigated or resolved
You were very unfortunate. This kind of power outage is not that common in São Paulo. Actually, the average hours without power per year in Canada is three times as high as in São Paulo (18h vs 6h).
Dude - It's just completely irresponsible of the owners of the hostel to leave the gate open in the middle of a power outage and go home. They are just playing games out of laziness to not take responsibility for the situation, they should hire somebody to take care of the place during the night in case of power outages, but they chose to just leave the door open and place a candle and go home hahahha. come on .. thats so bad bad bad. 1 star rating
When i spoke to brazilians about when the power will be back they said: “the company says tomorrow but no one believes them as they’re corrupt and inefficient”
Dude, trust me. São Paulo's energy companies are notoriously infamous regarding transparency. They privatized it in 1998 by breaking Eletropaulo into four competing private companies, which only competed for three years when one prevailed and bought it's way to monopoly. Now, Eletropaulo belongs to an Italian company (Enel) and every year São Paulo continually breaks its record of power outages.
I'm brazilian and so nice that you're here. take a visit in João Pessoa, it's the most destination place for a visit according booking's recommendation for 2025

Especially, what he said about Canadians' way of being nice is helping people with directions. I lol'd so much when he said that due to how relatable it is. 90% of my interactions with locals have been asking for directions.
That coffee shop "the coffee", I visited their website once, and there's the option to switch to Japanese, but it's basically all Google Translate, that's when I realized they weren't very serious fellow weebs lmfao
São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are dangerous cities (Rio de Janeiro is much more so), people are already used to these things happening, and unfortunately at the time you came there was a serious problem with a Brazilian energy distributor, the light problem was not just in the state of SP, without electricity it is easier for criminals
Well, honestly dude, this last part of the video was totally unnecessary. First Brazil suffers a lot from its reputation for being insecure, we don't need any alerts about this topic anymore. This is a super passive-aggressive Canadian. I live in Canada myself and honestly every single day there is a shooting in a different neighborhood. Regarding the electric company same shit happened few years ago here in Canada, but it was worts because it was winter, We spent a week with no electricity in one fo the most coldest winter. Canada is too far away of being a paradise.
@hudsonps4669 First nobody invited him to go there. The entire universe already know we have security challenges in Brazil, if something really bad happens to him it is because he is neglected. Tons of gringos do this just to reinforce the bad reputation of the city, that is in the reality is not any different than any other big city around the world, but they want present Brasil as the worst place.
As a Brazilian I gotta inform all the tourists. Brazil can be a complex destination to visit. The country’s social inequality is striking, and you might encounter stark contrasts within just a few blocks. For instance, you could see a wealthy neighborhood, and a short walk away, find yourself in a favela where poverty is prevalent. While exploring, it’s essential to remain cautious, particularly when carrying valuables like cameras, as safety can be a concern in some areas. I would recommend having a local guide to mitigate problems.
53:00 which more u go to the south more safety is it, which more north more dangerous, if u go to rio de janeiro u will see the hell in the earth, but the south is more european and safe, so go to the south, go to Florianopolis, Balneário Camboriú, Balneário Piçarras, Gramado, u won't go through this type of situation
"maybe even when something bad happens to me/ I will order pizza/ instead of staying in my room/ just being scared/ feeding that bad energy/ maybe next time I will feed my stomach with pizza and relax/ it's the Brazilian way" that is a phrase worth to remember

Thank you so much for this amazing video! I need some advice: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How can I transfer them to Binance?
Yes it's a tradition I'm Brazil to wrap up a bad situation with pizza 🍕 especially for serious situations like politics, justice and financial scams
The power company that distributes energy in Sao Paulo is italian by the way and and it is not a generalized problem through the country it is a specific problem related to this company and heavier storms than usual that reaches the power lines which are not subterranian here.
Anyone know what that small camera is that he uses?
DJI Osmo Pocket 3 ua-cam.com/video/H8xPOhcCrVE/v-deo.html
The pizza thing is more of a saying than an actual culture. The saying would translate to something like "it finished in pizza". We say that when something bad happens, or someone does something bad and suffers no consequences for it. I'm very sorry you went through this scary episode man, Brazil is a great place, but criminality kind of ruins it.
40:05 A DIVAAA
Ellen Jabour is/was quite famous. So.. U didn't know but you've interviewed a brazilian celebrity.
I think what the hostel receptionist might've said is "it all ended in pizza" (tudo acabou em pizza), which is a phrase from political commentary where something like a corruption scandal goes unpunished, so it ends in pizza
In politics I think it means like... everyone just shrugged off the problem and went on with their lives as if nothing happened, which amusingly is exactly what happened at the hostel in your case
I used to hear this phrase on TV during the mensalão scandal in 2005, and to me as a teenager at the time it evoked images of politicians sharing stolen assets like slices of a pizza, but I think the intended image is simply the corrupt gathering up at a pizzeria and celebrating not being punished
Everything in Brazil ends up in Pizza. Tudo no Brasil termina em pizza
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Brazil has the second largest japanese community after Japan? 🤔
Will you come in Paraguay? 🇵🇾
You could visit Encarnación City also known as "EncarnaYork" 😂
Asunción is the Capital of the country.
I live close from Asunción, if you come, you are invited to stay at my home. 😊
🪙 🐢 🇧🇷 🇨🇦 ❤
The expression “to end up in/with pizza” means a bad situation was ignored and not dealt with as it was supposed to.
Exactly! As a Brazilian, seeing the expression 'end up in pizza' play out literally made me laugh out loud. We definitely don’t eat pizza after a tragedy-it’s just a saying that means the incident wasn’t properly investigated or resolved
think of the amount you pay in brazil is in dollars, so yeah, about the R$40 meal...
You were very unfortunate. This kind of power outage is not that common in São Paulo. Actually, the average hours without power per year in Canada is three times as high as in São Paulo (18h vs 6h).
Would you come to Timor-Leste 🇹🇱 ?? Located between Indonesia and Australia
Good video but I think you cannot say the energy company is corrupt, how do you know?
When i spoke to brazilians about when the power will be back they said: “the company says tomorrow but no one believes them as they’re corrupt and inefficient”
Dude, trust me. São Paulo's energy companies are notoriously infamous regarding transparency. They privatized it in 1998 by breaking Eletropaulo into four competing private companies, which only competed for three years when one prevailed and bought it's way to monopoly. Now, Eletropaulo belongs to an Italian company (Enel) and every year São Paulo continually breaks its record of power outages.

I think 2 .5 million Japanian iive in Brazil ....., and 1 mil from Leblon lives in Sao Paulo ......
I'm brazilian and so nice that you're here.
take a visit in João Pessoa, it's the most destination place for a visit according booking's recommendation for 2025
So nice places to visit in São Paulo, I love Thais vídeo, thank you to share with us.
surprised me you in Brazil, I’m Brazilian I live in Spain, I watch your videos because I enjoy and to improve my English skills, is so easy to understand you, and a want more videos in Brazil, the Brazilian people is friendly, I guess you will be surprised hahaha

Two sides of the same coin… as Brazilian living in Montreal since 2015 I can really relate with your video final considerations.
Especially, what he said about Canadians' way of being nice is helping people with directions. I lol'd so much when he said that due to how relatable it is. 90% of my interactions with locals have been asking for directions.
That coffee shop "the coffee", I visited their website once, and there's the option to switch to Japanese, but it's basically all Google Translate, that's when I realized they weren't very serious fellow weebs lmfao
cristian was like 🕯️
Did u have your laptop, camera and phone stolen?
São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are dangerous cities (Rio de Janeiro is much more so), people are already used to these things happening, and unfortunately at the time you came there was a serious problem with a Brazilian energy distributor, the light problem was not just in the state of SP, without electricity it is easier for criminals
🐢
bro saying he is not being dramatic is crazy to say bro lol
Well, honestly dude, this last part of the video was totally unnecessary. First Brazil suffers a lot from its reputation for being insecure, we don't need any alerts about this topic anymore. This is a super passive-aggressive Canadian. I live in Canada myself and honestly every single day there is a shooting in a different neighborhood. Regarding the electric company same shit happened few years ago here in Canada, but it was worts because it was winter, We spent a week with no electricity in one fo the most coldest winter. Canada is too far away of being a paradise.
I mean, it is something he experienced that was traumatic. Why would he omit it?
@hudsonps4669 First nobody invited him to go there. The entire universe already know we have security challenges in Brazil, if something really bad happens to him it is because he is neglected. Tons of gringos do this just to reinforce the bad reputation of the city, that is in the reality is not any different than any other big city around the world, but they want present Brasil as the worst place.
@@andrebrito4210 you don’t need an invitation.
If something bad happens to me anywhere, I’m going to talk about it.
33:10 ?? wtf
53:00 which more u go to the south more safety is it, which more north more dangerous, if u go to rio de janeiro u will see the hell in the earth, but the south is more european and safe, so go to the south, go to Florianopolis, Balneário Camboriú, Balneário Piçarras, Gramado, u won't go through this type of situation
legal
100 hours tops in sao paulo. especially coming from Canada.. nothing special
We are not dangerous. Lol
